My brother, 14 years my senior, used to play this on guitar and sing when I was a kid. Didn't understand the words, "disguise" sounded more like "skies" to me back then. Amazing song and even better now I understand the lyrics!
The meaning of the song for me is that we “humans” are all the same, living in disguise through our jobs, appearance, social status and so on.... but we are all the same ✌️
the way I see it is as an expression of the one manifesting itself as the appearence of all thease diffrent people that are actually all the exact same thing uwu but of corse this makes no sence XD and is really just one method of discovering what cant be known with words
@@benjaminRhodesLEGO The religious term for 'the one' is God. But this is not a conceptual God in the skies. God disguises himself as everyone and everything. He hides by being everything. And the cosmic joke is that all we are seeking is to remember that - yet we chase it by trying to become someone, when really the answer is to see 'we' are not there in the first place. There is only God's being. The original sin or blasphemy is to believe you are separate from God's being. '“When you come to know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will realize that you are the children of the living Father' - Jesus.
I see this song as a meditation on both the social roles we play in our lives that mask and distract us from the pure essence of being as well as the prospect of us all really being part of the same intangible entity. Call it God, quantum realm, collective consciousness or whatever other ultimately inadequate concept we might use while attempting to define it. "It" being that which cannot be defined and that which so few of us ever really contemplate. The lyrics have a jovial playful quality but this is certainly a very deep song indeed. The word "disguise" is what most intuitively comes to the attention of the listener but Scott's choice to use "wonderful" is what makes this song more than just a comment on the performative element of the human experience. The sentiment in this song takes the beauty of a lover, the tragedy of the drunk and even the physical features of his own face and sees them as the manifestation of all that "is" and is truly awe struck by its imperfect flawed wonder. Another song on the same album called "Bring em' all in" explores a similar idea. The worst and best, ugliest and most beautiful of all that life is. Bring it all in to my heart because I accept it all as being of equal significance.
