4 nerve ablatment treatments, 6 ultra sounds, 2 mri scans, 3 catscans for extreme lower abdominal pain, and bed ridden for most of a year. Repatha takes the joy out of life.

Really appreciate your comment on early adoption, it adds a lot more trust into the information provided and the honesty around where the research is up to even with very positive initial results.
Im a 36yr old diabetic with slightly raised ldl levels which through diet and exercise has reduced that almost by 20% (i run marathons and gym regularly) however he is looking to get me into repatha and im trying to understand more about the medication before i commit. Thanks for the video!

PCSK9 evolved over the millennia and must have conferred some survival advantage. .Suppressing LDL had to have some survival benefit1

    Hello
My partner has very high cholesterol levels and the doctor prescribed these injections.
He is worried for how long he would have to take these injections though as he wouldn't want to have this long term.
Usually what is the standard time that people are required to take these injections?
I know it will depend on the individual case but just wanted to have an idea.
    Thanks

Hello and thanks for reaching out! According to The FOURIER trial reported in The New England Journal of Medicine, the average of patients required follow up treatments for about 2.2 years.
You can read more about the study and results here: www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/nejmoa1615664

@abarthspider3479 after 6 shots I have neuropathy too, My docs feel that because it helped take my lipids down 100 pts and I cannot tolerate statins I need to stay on…tho I HAVE CUT BACK …my research tells me Diabetes is more dangerous for cardiac issues than LDL, , Repatha drives glucose up….so the response is Jardience which causes UTI….this sucks…my hope is my ejection fraction will improve by October and I can negotiate these lifetime medications. I know its up to me, I will tolerate a poor quality of life and try to not be ignorant…

I have negotiated with my dr half the recommended dose…one shot month. It has debilitated me, after just 6 shots I have neuropathy in thighs, knees, back spasms….waves of flulike feeling…just like statins. I have heard they dont know how long to stay on…research inadequate beyond 5 years…some people cut back until they feel better…honestly I am unconvinced LDL is causing heart problem…I am more convinced from reading that diabetes is the cause of many more diseases…and metabolic syndrome….lifestyle is important and I have changed dramatically….genetics, age, uric acid, weight need closer look

Doing a search on Google Scholar in the time frame 2018-2022, besides the study I took part in while a patient at theb Universitätsspital Basel, Switzerland, there are now dozens of clinical trials that have been done around the world concerning PCSK9 inhibitors in general and/or Evolocumab/Repatha specifically.
To recap, the double-blind trial I participated in was to test relative efficacy/effectiveness of Evolocumab. As you mentioned, it's prohibitively expensive and initially as such was NOT included in the standard insured medication list used by insurers. BUT since there is a "co-operation" in Switzerland between drug manufacturers, insurers and the government which together sets what medications/treatments are included in the basic obligatory health insurance, it was both in the best interest of patients as well as industry to add to the existing body of literature. And being that Switzerland is little different from many other countries in it's standpoint of "Good that others have found XYZ to be good, we want to do our own testing....", they did. The results were pretty conclusive: When factoring in projected reductions in further LDL-causing health conditions, Evolocumab could provide an even more cost effective treatment than existing ones ESPECIALLY for those who have proven, they do not tolerate statins. Thus the requirement in Switzerland, that patients take at least 3 different statins with debilitating side-effects before being able to take Evolocumab and have it's cost covered by the insurance. That is now the case. And in my own personal anecdotal case, both my Cardiologist and my daughter the GP have come around to the idea, that many of their patients did indeed suffer from neuropathy-like symptoms which either cleared up or were reduced by either trying differing statins and/or switching to Evolocumab.
There is still a split in the medicalcommunity on this topic, many doctors not believing that statins have anything to do with neuropathy and others who do. My specific case only shows how a combination of "new(-er)" research plus anecdotal evidence from differing clinical practices (how many anecdotal does it take before a "trend" is "discovered"?) can sway even medical opinions.

Yes, unfortunately, because it raises insulin levels just like statins do. :(
