12 years ago I was handed an Esteban guitar & asked to practice basic chords and develop bar chording techniques, only having been invited into a best friend's Christian Rock band because of my vocal harmonies.
I played guitar somewhat when I was kid, having both an acoustic and later a MIJ St. George electric, but certaintly did not consider myself a guitar player since then.
When the band thing happened, our local music store (Roll Over Beethoven, Hesperia CA) was truly instrumental (no pun intended) in helping me learn and grow with the guitar. The owner and staff became mentors and friends, were always encouraging and helpful, a relationship that lasts to this day.
Willie, the owner of the shop shared with me that I was an example of why he owns a guitar store, fostering and witnessing growth of those who start from scratch and become players/musicians in their own right.
You just can't that kind of mutual benefit from Amazon.
Thanks Willie, Nate, and Tom of Roll Over Beethoven! Couldn't have done it without you all!

Yes!! Doesn’t have to be perfect. Just playable. Also pay some kid or discount lessons for them to walk around and tune guitars. Again tuning doesn’t have to be perfect, just don’t have the strings falling off the guitars like limp noodles.

This is a big one for me. Most independent guitar shops keep them at least some degree of set up and in tune on the rack and the best ones also offer to set it to your specs before you take it home. It can take the majority of guitars from "wow, every guitar in this place must have come from the reject pile" to "wow every guitar in here is pretty darn good how do I pick one?"

@@Thisischrisrao I worked at GC in the mid 2000s... not really. The management was more concerned with us soliciting sales by phone. The better salesmen, such as myself, would actively find the better guitars and do that kind of stuff so we could sell them more easily. Very often we were motivated to do this by the profit margin on a particular instrument as we worked on commission. When we(I) would buy in a used guitar, we(I) would be even more motivated as even if we didn't ultimately make the sale of the piece, we still got a cut because we bought it in. So, in short, it isn't(wasn't) a standard practice, but a good salesman took the initiative to do it anyway. Not only that, but I would very often flat-out refuse to sell garbage to people unless they were adamant that a particular piece of garbage was meant for them. I can't tell you how many times I told a customer that they shouldn't buy a guitar that wasn't worth their $. Not only that, but I would very often reduce a price to get a guitar or amp into the hands of someone who I really wanted to have it.

I'm one of the few who hates mom and pop shops. I was glad when I found GC. The mom and pop shops ( my experience only) have treated me like sh!t when I tried to shop there. One famous Los Angeles shop wouldn't let me use my credit card when I tried to purchase something. The dude actually said "I prefer cash from YOU" I asked "I see by the sticker on the window that you accept CC's" he then said "Yeah, but I rather have cash from YOU so there's no problems". It was obvious to both of us why he didn't want my CC......I haven't stepped foot in a mom and pop since.

Here in North Dakota, every music store seems to only carry bottom of the barrel guitars from brands that nobody wants. I'm not talking about Squire and Epiphone. It's always $100 guitars that they mark up to $300. Then, when nobody buys that stuff and they go out of business, they bitch about the internet and how the community doesn't support local business.

    • @mikecullen6488
      @mikecullen6488 3 года назад +1

To be a dealer for one of the big brands requires you to carry a certain amount of their inventory. Gibson doesn’t even let you pick which ones. So it’s tough for a mom and pop to get the name brands except perhaps used ones. Some of them get deals through places like Sweetwater where they can get a discount and sell to you for the full price and make like 10 percent. So a lot of their stock is going to be off brands and side stuff like pedals , cases and strings.

You know what turned me off of “mom and pop” stores? I spent my teens and twenties going to little shops only to get the bums rush because they knew some kid didn’t have the money or credit for a decent sale. I’ve asked to play a guitar and was denied. We all know the feeling of just wanting to be around cool gear and daydream but there’s the shop guy pressuring you to kick rocks and he doesn’t want to talk gear with you either.
    Oh how the turntables...uh.
I’m just saying, I wasn’t treated well when they had the chance and now they’re in decline I’m supposed to save them?

Growing up I had a pawnshop down the street with a killer music room. Anytime they had something new he'd call the house so my dad and I would roll over. Old man would nerd out at the gun counter (arthritis took his ability to play) and I'd go to the music room spending hours just jamming. Got to play a few custom shop fenders and gibsons during that time. In hindsight, he had tons of vintage amps (that I'm sure are now sought after) collecting dust I never checked out. Years of that and really only ever bought an epiphone and Rivera amp from the guy.
My local one now is legit too. Guy was offering up anything and everything for me to try out. Played a few in-house built teles, les pauls, strats, through a slo100, and their in-house built 18tmb and tweed champ.
Whole interaction was just nerding out on equipment. Guy even busted out his personal "not for sale" stuff to play.
I teased them for not stocking any jazz iii picks but left with some strings and the tweed champ. They've had a return customer for the past 8 years now.
About to have them do a custom tele build for me soon as a matter of fact.

I'm 67 years old been driving for 50 years and it ticks me off to have to have an escort to test drive a used car that I could put on my charge card or write a check for. One thing... Well it involves many things... Us just doing retail basics. Like being in stock. If a place looks bare it sends a bad message to customers. Make sure everything is clearly priced. Don't make anything a mystery. Make sure all everything you carry is displayed. You can't sell it if customers can't see it, and last but totally not least, make sure everything is spotlessly clean and shiny. Nobody wants to shop dirty product in a dirty store

If you’re gonna have guitars available to play at your guitar shop, make them set up decently well at the very least! One of my biggest pet peeves at Guitar Center is 70% of the guitars on the wall are set up like shit... out of tune, too much relief, floyd rose at an angle, etc. when you pick up a guitar for the first time at GC, it’s usually a terrible first impression

From Leo: Good commentary. Certainly unsound business practice closes some down, but changes in the market accounts for others. I have worked part time in several independent stores over 40 + years. Very thin margins, and expensive overheads. The minimum orders keep getting more expensive. I recently worked at a shop near a college campus. I would spend 45 minutes helping someone test a various products, and give them really good price. While they are standing there, they find it online and brag that they just saved $25 on a $600. purchase. Then two weeks later they bring the thing to you to service warranty, costing the shop time and money. If you tell them to send it back where they got it, they slander you on welp and other sites as "rip offs". I guess I am just old fashioned, good service has value to me, especially if it keeps a store open in my town. I don't know how any independents make it these days.

Jonathon spent 30 minutes talking about pedals with me! Baxter witty persona and massive chops is a true gentleman. Sean is great young guy and every has cool hair. The couch is vital to the vibe. Lack of ego and humility is the vibe. Casino make people feel comfortable. This make them want to buy guitars.

Covid has greatly affected the experience at the moment, but I hope that gets better soon. I enjoy more of the grass roots style, old buildings with a historic feel. All that being said the town had some great local musicians. At one of the old churches the elders allowed some guys to practice at the church’s meeting house. It was a beautiful old building. Guys would set up their amps and play on a week night. Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, David Bowie...The rest of us would hang out, sneak a beer and listen. It’s where I learned the difference between Vox and Marshall and Les Paul and Stratocaster. These guys were my inspiration to learn guitar. Still learning 45 years later, And most of those guys are still playing.

There's a local shop here in Singapore that is slowly hemorrhaging guitar/amp brands; it's like every other year since 2015 they would lose a major marque, or one of their competitors has picked up the same brand dealership as well. I am in no doubt, even though they have been around for 20 years, they might not last another 10 at the rate they're going.
In the past, the people working there always had a bit of a snobby vibe, sales guys (and the owner) would look you up and down and give you attention based on whether or not they felt you were able to afford their wares. It doesn't help that they choose to bring in really random-assed boutique stuff that nobody but the incredibly well-heeled can afford.
In recent years, they have been a lot more relaxed and friendly, but they still don't seem to be able to hold onto exclusivity for some of the brands that they were the first to bring into the country. I wish them well; obviously, competition is tighter now with some of the bigger retailers really flexing their muscles, but yet they only really started putting some effort into their website just before Covid hit in march 2020. Time will tell!

One thing from my experiencing dealing with retail, when you go through the stock of failed retail stores you get the idea why they did go belly up. Usually is filled with old unsold stock. So my advice to guitar shops, don't try to milk the bull market, take the opportunity on the good times to unload the old stock.
I can see already most of the stores doing the same mistake and up charging on old stuff to make the most profit, but guess what, the good times will pass and you will keep one having your capital tied in stock you are not going to have to opportunity to sell again before you tank.

One of the local m&p shops I go to will write down on a 6x9 printed carbonless invoice pad, yet the sales system runs on an ipad and the receipt I get is itemized. Maybe for the bossman to see in a glace the #s for the day? I'd think the system would spit that info out. I'm going to ask on Monday when I go there. LOL

My local shop is sadness, I understand as im assuming the demand just isnt here possibly but they carry about 16 new acoustics and will have maybe 7-10 used electrics at any time, of which 6 are always a GIO or strats from companies i never heard off. I did find and bought a Classic Vibe Simon Neil Signature 60's Strat for $275 once tho, i threw my credit card at the owner basically, but its depressing. The closest GC is hour and 20 away so its just what i get. I try to buy picks and strings to support. Thankfully in the 80's a Friendly River Music shop was right across from my house so when it mattered I got to see Charvels and get me a CRATE G40C combo which let to today.

This is a video I wish my local shops would watch. I've spent a lot of money with a small shop in another state over the last year because of the crappy staff at my local shop. The other shop has really nice and responsive staff and always gives a fair deal. The local shop guy tried to pull some used car salesman non-sense with me on an amp where the price was going to be more tomorrow if I didn't buy today, so I just left.... and came across the new shop that gave me a fair price and didn't jerk me around. I thought the cliquey band guys at the local shop were cool when I was in high school, but now that Im in my 30s and actually have money to buy great stuff I can't stand their pretentious dismissiveness and lack of product knowledge. It sucks because I want to support local, but they're not a charity... they should at least have to earn my business with a base level of kindness and helpfulness. The shop should be more than just the place they get to pretend to be rock stars in. I kinda feel bad for the owners, but I guess they've allowed it to happen by letting turds sit in their punch bowl.

I wish I lived within driving distance of a really good guitar shop. All we have here is Long & McQuade which is kinda Canada's answer to Guitar Center. There's a few other independent shops but the way the manufacturers run their distribution deals here it's very difficult for them 1) to get the major brands, and 2) they only stock the low and mid tier product. Also I live in a small market and there literally is no vintage gear market here. So you go from shop to shop and everyone has the same guitars on the walls.

From Leo: The major brands did that, not the shops. The rep would come in with a list and say you have to buy this to stay as a dealer. The list was full of expensive, turkey products that you could not possibly sell. They would then put you on a back order waiting list for the popular products. If you did not sign the ridiculous contract they pulled your dealership, even if you had faithfully represented the brand for 25 years.

Kids came in and saw our animals. We felt more like a zoo than an actual store. Sad to say but I don't think anyone missed us being gone. Its now a Chinese restaurant tho.

When a customer comes in the door with a pocket full of cash and asks a question, but the employee acts like a dick who has something better to do, is a sure fire way to lose customers and go out of business. Yet surprisingly, so many guitar stores have employees who do shit like that.

I hate going into a shop with quality guitars on the wall that have a horrible setup on them, you'd think before they hung them up for sale they'd at least check them out and get them reasonably playable. I understand things can get out of wack during shipping or if they've hung around too long, but don't ask me to spend my hard earned money on a guitar that you tell me you're going to setup for me after I pay you for it.

I think b&m shops should just use Reverb. Something about being a small shop means they’re usually terrible at web design, didn’t hire a pro to build it or got the cheapest build they could. It’s sus as hell and lacking any tools we need, as in reviews, cross posting, price comparison, tracking, shop rating etc.

They fail when they get lazy. We have technology and we know how much an "out of the box" guitar should cost. If you want to have a b&m store or shop you have to charge more. Thats not a problem if you actually make sure the guitars are set up properly and your staff works with the customers to understand the value they are getting vs them buying it online and then having to pay for a setup. The b&m store needs to also make sure they know where the accessories are. If I want to buy a guitar from you and your staff has to wander around in the back for 30 minutes looking for the case and the candy you are probably going to lose the sale to the online store or big box store.
