Alright, I don't even watch helluva boss, but I heard the OG song in passing and my linguistics loving brain said "look for covers RIGHT NOW!" Since this cover and the song slaps, I'm posting my findings for the algorithm. I went looking specifically for the pronounciation of the word "Cotton." This is one of those words that has such unique and localized pronounciation that I had to know how other people were singing it. I personally don't pronounce the "T" at all when casually speaking. I replace it with a glottal stop for an overall sound of "Cah-en Candy," although I would probably add a very soft "D" consonant sound if I was singing. The original is VERY distinctively pronouncing it with a much softer "D" sound than is traditional, and the long vowel is pronounced "aw" with a very distinct roundness, but not quite a full o. This creates the sound "Caw-Den." This version has my favorite pronounciation of the word so far. The hard consonant is given more weight and is about halfway between a "T" and a "D" and the vowel is much more stretched, pushed more toward an "ah" so the overall sound is "Caught in Candy" (provided you have a midwestern cot-caught merger) Interested to see if anyone'll make a cover with a solid "T" sound or a rounder "O," since everything I've heard so far keeps the original softer "D" and stretches the vowel. Thanks for the cover, this slaps.
Thank you for your linguistic/dialectical breakdown! 😆 I deliberated over how I would sing Cotton for a while. In speaking, I would actually say it more like "Co*-nn" where the asterisk is a glottal stop and the second sylable is pure consonent. But I think I decided on a more open vowel because I was trying to sound more forward resonant and I didn't like how closed off and quiet the NN sounded in the middle of a melody that spends an equal amount of time on both syllables (which, now that I think about it, is probably the opposite of what you should do for a seductive pop song) and I probably pronounced the "td" because the glottal stop with the open vowels suddenly sounded British to me. Lol You might also be interested to know I considered opening the last vowel of candy to a Justin Timberlake "its gonna be maaaaay" because of how strident the eeee was sounding... but I decided it wasn't authentic to my dialect and kept the pure ee sound.
THIS IS SO GOOD!!! But a bit of constructive criticism, you sound GREAT, but you need to sing more high pitched sometimes, friend!! I understand it's hard but exploring and expanding in what pitch you can sing in can really make your performance pop more like the original singer's voice did!!
Thank you so much for the feedback, Rat! :D I struggled a lot with recording this because of that very issue, and ended up raising the instrumental 3 semitones from the original key. But I maybe should have gone higher. Kinda funny since I used to be a Bass/Baritone in choir. But my work isn’t really all that good, just simple attacks or short stories, I’m doing my biggest project yet, though, alongside a friend, tora. And he’s got me doing a storyboard style animation rn, I work in 3d, though. I can’t draw for the life of me😂 But I just 1. Can’t publish most of my work because it’s private or a request from someone, and 2. Just didn’t think anyone would wanna see it. It’s all pretty rough and messy, and I hate working on backgrounds, I always just use free ones lol.
