Meet the Lubavitcher Rebbe: Judaism’s Most Impactful Rabbi | Unpacked

- When Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson became leader of Chabad-Lubavitch in 1951, he created a global phenomenon that would change Judaism forever. Chabad-Lubavitch is one part of the greater revival movement called Hasidic Judaism which developed in the 18th century and began to spread across Europe with each Hasidic court following their own religious leader or “Rebbe.”
Scholar, engineer, and visionary leader, the Lubavitcher Rebbe created a blueprint for how to spread a love for Judaism. With his guidance, emissaries or “shluchim'' have built Jewish infrastructure across the globe, ensuring that Jews from all walks of life have the opportunity to take part in Jewish life, no matter where they are or where they’ve come from.

I'm Jewish. I deployed to Southeast Asia at the end of 2019 as apart of 31st Marine Expiditionary Unit.
We did an exercise with the Royal Thai Marine Corps and got 3 days to explore the country after. I have a distinct memory of being slightly drunk and seeing a Hasid emerge in contrast to all the Buddhist and Hindu shrines. I thought I was back home in Chicago. Wrapped tiffilin right then and there. Definitely a highlight in my 6 years in the Navy.
Thank you for your service

"Only you can light your own candle, I have simply handed you the match!" - Lubavitcher Rebbe
I work in Crown Heights. I often pass by posters and stickers with the Rebbe's face on them.
I am not Jewish (Catholic with a great deal of respect for my Abrahamic brothers and sisters) but the posters and stickers interested me. As a historian I appreciate the new context on his importance in modern Jewish history, and as a religious Catholic I always have a soft spot for people who spread religion and love from the goodness of their hearts whether they be the nuns in my family, the person in Forest Hills asking my ethically ambiguous self if Im Jewish for a blessing, or the Mormon missionary asking me to join them at their service.
Much love ❤
My old neighbors, Mr and Mrs Gralnik, were the kindest people. They were members of Chabad South Bay here in Los Angeles. I am not Jewish but they treated my family like family. My father traveled for work often and the neighborhood had its troubles. Al Gralnik always told me if anything bad was happening that my family and I were welcome over any time and he would make sure we were safe. As I grew up Al and I didn't always see eye to eye politically but we all had love for each other's families and I knew I could always count on Al for anything. He encouraged me to study hard, work hard, and listen to my parents. I miss Mr and Mrs Gralnik dearly. They truly lived their faith and sought to be of service to Jews and gentiles alike. Though I am not Jewish, the Rebbe indeed had a positive impact on my life through the Gralnik family.
wow that is awesome im proud to be one of his messengers
What happened to them, they died or move somewhere? Or you moved?
@@CarpeDiem23 Mr Gralnik passed away and Mrs Gralnik I believe moved to New York under the care of some of her kids. I moved away for college and live on the other side of town from their old house but I think of them every time I visit my mom who still lives in the family house next door to their old house. They were awesome neighbors. Luckily the new neighbors are cool too.
First comment...unbelievably inspiring! It is impossible to capture 92 years of work + the continuing success of the chabad movement in just 8 mins, but this is as close as its going to get! Absolutely amazing!
This year, April 12, we celebrate 120 years to the Lubavitcher Rebbe's birth, we ask of all to add in good deeds and kindness, even just to light Shabbat candles, or put on Tefillin, in the Rebbes honor, and through this to hasten the coming of Moshiach speedily in hour days!
Hassidic Judaism-especially Chabad did the most efficient and accurate representation of Judaism and our faith, and I'm *so* proud that this is the face of our people. 🧿🕎🧿
That's scary if true.

Except Chabad teaches that Jewish souls are worth more than non-Jewish souls. Care to explain?
@@emmettdonkeydoodle6230Chabad does a great amount of work with non-Jews as well.
As a foremost global spiritual leader, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, emphasized that God commanded the Jewish people, through Moses at Mount Sinai, to influence the people of the world to observe the Torah’s Seven Noahide Commandments. This mandate was transmitted through the generations and codified by Maimonides (Rambam). Despite the key importance of this mission, Jews were unable to fulfill it during most of their difficult history. The Rebbe explained that by Divine Providence, the freedoms of religion and speech in our modern societies make it possible - and thus obligatory - for Jews to now be involved in spreading out this much-needed universal message.
So important!
Were Jews unable to fulfill it, or did they simply not care to fulfill it?
If I could have met anyone from the past, I’d want to meet the Rebbe - his wisdom was boundless

I love Chabad! Chabad of RARA ( Rural And Regional Australia) visit me several times a year, as I am a Jewish woman living in a country town here in Australia.
This video has made me realize I actually know hardly anything about judeism. I was totally lost. Like... What's a mitzvah? I feel like I accidentally went into the calculus 2 class instead of algebra 1. Seems like maybe I need to go take some remedial classes on the subject.
Hi Justin, if you have any questions in particular, feel free to ask and I'll be happy to answer to the best of my ability.

You would really enjoy learning about it! If not simply to practice thinking more holistically! 🙂
Mitzvah is a good deed
I don't understand how there are jews that don't like their Jewish identity, they don't know how lucky they are of being part of a great loving family.
Ashamed of the Talmud.
As someone who is a descendent of Caribbean people who were attacked just for existing, I can understand why someone would hide that. I am a American Caribbean who is Jewish, imagine how often I am defending my own existence. It's is actually easier if people only saw me as a black man and even that has its problems. Today it's almost "cool" to say "I am Jewish" but if you were living during the times everyone around the world wanted to eliminate you, maybe you would hide it too.
@@meddem1744 you don’t know what the Talmud is lol
@@elaleron2583 It's a book written by 70 so called elderly wise men named the Sanhedrin. In the Talmud it says clearly it's allowed for a jew to lie to a gentle. To steal from a gentile. And Mary was a liar and cheater.

A pretty good video.
Awesome video! I've always wondered why there wasn't a successor Rebbe in the Chabad movement. Does anyone have an answer for me? I googled it but seem to come by different reasons.
Someone worthy needs to fit, someone righteous with vast wisdom, and divine inspiration.
The Rebbe didn’t father any children. Leadership of a Chassidic sect is typically passed down in that fashion.
He had no children. His wife was barren. Under Jewish law he could have divorced her since the purpose of marriage is to have kids. He refused. He said that he loved her too much and to leave her would break her heart. That he refused to do.
@@haroldgoodman130 that's a beautiful story. Thank you for sharing.
@@kristoffliftoff9316 on a more spiritual level, it is also believed that we are no longer in need of a rebbe, the philosophy being that each generation we don't need so much of an obvious leader connecting us to hashem, like how we went from prophets to kings or judges, then sages, goanim, ext. nowaday, as moshiach comes closer, we don't even need a rebbe to keep the light alive

No same history doesn’t make you Jewish- it’s having a Jewish soul which is gotten by being birthed by a Jewish mother or being a convert to Judaism… Man’s steps are led by G-d each created for their own destiny and purpose- the mystery of our soul journey.
Not really, you must be born to a Jewish mother to be a Jew. (or convert)
How do you call a person or organized group that destroys culture of country that welcome them in?
Generally, Muslims. Or "cultural invader." This term conveys the notion of entering a country and negatively impacting or undermining its cultural values and traditions. Another term that might be used is "cultural vandal," which emphasizes the destructive aspect of their actions against the host culture.

37 And Jesus replied to him,
“‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’
38 This is the first and greatest commandment.
39 The second is like it,
‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF [that is, unselfishly seek the best or higher good for others].’

Must you use those awful grating phlegmy “kh” sounds? A soft “h” sound doesn’t hurt the listeners’ ears and make them want to run away. And “kh” is not Hebrew nor Aramaic from long long ago. So, you are not continuing a tradition. “kh” degrades Hebrew.
I have strange experience with the Chabad .Ones one rebe didnt wanted to gave me to hold and see shofar ,and I am musician .Another time I was playing for them and the rebe gave me like a half hand shaking I felt like I have plague or something .So for me there are not open for others !!
Keep in mind these are still individuals. Every Chabad I’ve been to they’ve been welcoming. One of them even had a karaoke event and the rabbi was encouraging my fiancé (who is female) to get up and sing by clapping and saying her name.
Shofars can be quite expensive and aren’t shared often due to practical hygiene purposes and are usually reserved for the High Holidays/educational purposes out of respect for its representation. Im also sorry the Rabbi you met was part of the “75% of American males who have what some would consider a ‘weak’ handshake”
Loving your naughbour, means those of other religions too! So how about showing the good people of Palestinian, that same love, that you show G_d? Or are some, naughbours, more worthy than others?
Let me answer your question:
First: Not all Jewish people are Lubavitch, although its a popular concept in Judaism, Chabad endorses it a lot.
The Government of Israel isn't Lubavitch, as far as I know. I even know there's been previous political figures there who openly opposed the movement.
Second: Do you think Israel bombs it's neighbours for the fun of it? You know those bombs must cost a ton of money. You can notice it's always key locations that are bombed, wanna know why? Because they're trying to produce weapons simply because they want to destroy Israel.
Fun Fact about the Yom Kippur war: The Israeli Government knew their enemies were planning on attacking, yet, no action was taken until after the war started. This was because they were scared of what the rest of the world would say if they bombed them. That fear cost over 2000 lives of innocent people.

It’s very hard to believe that any person Jewish or not would believe this man was the Messiah. When Messiah returns you sure will know it! By the way, is the Bible states in Romans chapter 2 verse 29 who is a Jew, but he that is one inwardly!
One thing is certain -- Messiah has not arrived yet.
In that case, John 8:44 applies to you and not Chabad.
@@cosimodirondo972 Exactly! He has not yet arrived and when he does everybody will know it. He is the king of kings and the Lord of lords.
@@jamesr8584 I think you should read that verse again. If you’d read that in context you find out that Yashua who was Messiah made it quite clear that these religious Jews of the day war of their father the devil. The fact is Yashua Messiah is the king of kings and Lord of lords as he stayed in John 14:6 Yahshua said: “I AM The Way, the truth, and the life, and no man comes to the father but by Me”!
@@jamesr8584 nobody is criticizing your particular religious group. The only thing I can say to you is that you keep your eyes on Yahweh! Forget about me and this is no different than the old testament were the true believers went one way and the ones that were not true believers went the other. We have the same choice today to receive the gift of salvation through Yashua or to reject it in favor of a man a way of life or anything else.
I don't understand how so many Jews, whose ancestors have gone through so much persecution, can support Israeli Apartheid and the persecution of the Palestinian people. I see only a miniscule minority standing up for the rights of Palestinians, and speaking out against the oppression and crimes committed by the Israeli state.
The Palestinian people also have a right to life and liberty. I wish more Israelis could understand this.
Maybe because they live in Israel unlike you and know the real Israeli-Palestinian conflict. From sayings like "From the River to the Sea" (I bet you've never taken a moment to think about the meanings of this innocent phrase) to daily terrorist attacks (which isn't as cool as it sounds, it means stabbing random people on the street, blowing up bus stops, etc. ) and of course missile attacks on the civilian population.

Chabbad is doing great things and the Rebbe was a great man AND your video is missing nuance.
Chabbad in meddling in Israeli politics and supports the most radical extreme position a fact which they mostly hide form their American donors.
The view that the Rebbe was the Massiah is problematic to put it mildly.
Im sorry but you have a mistake on this. The rebbes views define chabad, not any chabad rabbi. In general the rebbe didn't give his opinion on who to vote for. I don't know why you think that anyone has a say in who chabad supports other than the rebbe himself.
Chabad stays non-involved in Israeli politics, theologically we are 1,000% anti-Zionists.
What about Jesus of Nazareth?
Me and my classmates 15 of us went to Minsk and spent a winter there till summer 2003 , we did not do much there but it was to pretend the movement was doing something, 15 of us wasted a full year
Sorry to hear that, but why did you pretend? I know you can’t go back now, but surely your presence alone as observant Jews must have brought some measure of light and positive influence to the city. The Rebbe once spoke of a yeshiva student who had felt that his trip somewhere had been fruitless, but he was not aware that a Jewish woman who had seen this religious young man had been so moved that she wrote to the Lubavitcher Rebbe to thank him for sending his student to her city. Speaking as someone who grew up very assimilated, I can say that the rare occasions in my youth where I glimpsed an Orthodox Jew touched my soul very deeply in ways that you can’t even begin to imagine. It was magical and mysterious just to see them - I felt that our heritage and people was somehow alive and thriving even if I hadn’t been privy to experience its beauty. As a college student I had the wonderful opportunity to become close with the shluchim there and they lovingly returned my precious heritage to me and to so many of my peers. There is no one quite like Chabad, but if there is, the Rebbe would surely be overjoyed since there is much work left to do!
Im sorry that you wasted your time. Unfortunately, due to your own choices, you couldn’t be among those who created life changing summer camps throughout the world for those who couldn’t afford or establish jewish infrastructure for shattered communities. That, along with the myriad of events and holiday activities provided internationally throughout the year for communities less fortunate and without proper frameworks for jewish expression that MY friends and I have participated in for years.

The Golden Rule is Pure Torah and if you would bother to read the Book of Isaiah then by the time you get to the 52/53rd chapter where the Suffering Servant is spoken of, then you would know that Isaiah is referring to Israel and Jacob, the Jews, not the moshiach who the Prophet called the Stem of Jesse who he tells comes at the End of the Days and his teaching of Gd and His Holy Torah will transform the World to a UTOPIA, where PEACE REIGNS, but as you Jesus said, he did NOT COME TO BRING PEACE BUT DIVISION, to set family one against the other, the very reason why Gd sends Elijah, to come and UNDO ALL THE DIVISION FOSTERED BY FALSE TEACHERS, lest HE smite the Earth with utter destruction.
