I heard the opposite. I heard that a certain chasid asked the Rebbe to reveal himself as the Mashiach, and he responded by telling him that he recieved no such order from above.
In other words, I believe the Rebbe did know for a fact that he was Mashiach, but, like in previous generations, we were not zocheh. Compound that with the idea that the Rebbe stressed an urgency to talk about Mashiach and geulah, it would be safe to assume that was the case because the Rebbe was living the idea of Geulah as opposed to it just being theoretical.

This conversation is the perfect example of going for ones initial(or otherwise) understanding of a string of words written in a book over ever attempting to understand the context, intent, and source of the words. Lets start with the obvious context: Obviously we all believe in resurrection. We believe g-d surely has the ability to resurrect anyone whenever he wants, that he has done so during the times of tanach and gemara and that he will in the end of days. That shouldnt be controversial. Those that will resurrect will have had limbs blown off, will have died of all kinds of diseases and will have been murdered. How the person died in a technical sense obviously doesnt get in the way of g-ds ability to resurrect them. Now, those saying well you can come back from the dead to be moshiach if you died naturally but not if you were killed has no reasonable explanation. Those saying the diuk of "killed" without realizing it are repeating an answer under a certain context. The context is for those who wish to say that someone who is no longer alive is CONTINUING the actions of moshiach. For that very specific context it makes more sense to make this distinction because one of the criteria of moshiach is to defeat others in war "karkar kol bnei sheis", if someone is killed there can be no stronger siman than this that his actions are the opposite of what we desire for moshiach. Here saying someone died naturally dodges one out of this issue. For he wasnt defeated by anyone. There remains a practical issue of how a dead man can continue his actions(for this people give various answers like shluchim) but at least there isnt a direct contradiction to a pasuk. This diuk however has absolutely no sense to be applied to if a person is killed in his every day life, say, 200 years ago and you believe its techincally possible g-d could resurrect him from the dead and make him then start these actions at THAT time. And herein lies the answer to what the rambam is talking about in the first place. The context of the rambam for anyone who knows how to actually read normally is not discussing who is ALLOWED or eternally disallowed to become the moshiach at any given time. The context is of someone who is already presumed to have started the process, that should he have been killed or not succeed he obviously had not been designated as moshiach and all the actions which gave you a reason to think he was moshiach in the first place were not really as moshiach but as a kosher king helping klal yisrol. It's rather obvious he is speaking about someone who started actions consistent with the prophecies previously mentioned, otherwise the later line that this person who didnt succeed "only arose in order to test the multitudes" makes no sense. What is a test of the multitudes when a random unknown tzadik in the back of your shul gets killed by a burglar? obviously we are not speaking of any death or murder but one on a person who proceeded to do actions and failed. And all we are saying here is that the presumption that he was moshiach is now batul. its unfounded now. This is an entirely different question than whether this man will be chosen in 200 years to actually do the process for real. Rambam obviously isnt addressing this question as its so speculative. At that point you have no reason to think the guy should be moshiach over anybody else(especially as iyov says "Will a dead man live?" and the presumption min hateva is that when someone dies he wont randomly resurrect). Furthermore its obvious the rambam isnt paskening on the question of if moshiach can come back from the dead or not because he already said about questions in gemara that make no practical halachic difference in action which were a machlokes in the gemara that he does not pasken on such questions. Once somebody knows this they realize it makes no sense to say the rambam wanted to get into this issue at all.

The simple technical reason why Moshiach cannot be someone who was resurrected, is because למתים חפשי. A resurrected person will no longer keep mitzvos, because he is no longer obligated. His עולם העבודה is completed. His resurrected existence is into the עולם השכר. Thus, he will be unable to become qualified in the most basic sense to be even בחזקת משיח.

Likewise look into mitzvos buttlas lasid lavo and the discussion of tzaddikim coming early to serve in the beis hamikdash. Obviously he would not resurrect into the olam haschar because that would be after the coming of moshiach(40 years later) he would resurrect prior as obviously he must redeem us from the current world we inhabit.

He is right in that most do not hold Moshaich can be from the dead. The reason someone who has passed away can not be Moshiach is because Moshiach has to work with the generation which leads up to the Geula. Rambam speaks of the criteria of Chezkas Moshiach as someone who compels the generation to walk in the ways of the Torah, etc. and then continues on to Vadai Moshiach criteria.
So, according to the Rambam, and many others, it can not be Dovid Hamelech etc., who is from the past.

How do you know what the reason is for why Moshiach cannot be from the dead?
Let us posit that we do not know the reason. But, as the Rambam points out, there is a precedent. Bar Kochba died and that is how we know definitely that he was not Moshiach. Therefore, precedent, even without totally understanding the reason, teaches us that a dead man does not qualify, whether he died almost 2000 years ago, or 29 years ago. And if we are going to suggest that a dead man does qualify, a case could be made for Dovid HaMelech, Moshe Rabbeinu, Avrohom Ovinu, or Chizkiyahu HaMelech.

Therefore, souls of the wicked suffer torment a maximum of 12 months. If time was irrelevant, this Talmudic statement would make no sense. The soul ascends from level to level, every year ascending higher. Again, if the soul were not subject to time, this would make no sense.

    • @AccountingDept-w3e
      @AccountingDept-w3e Год назад

      1. there are two ways someone can be a potential moshiach. One is that they are holy and from the seed of king david and when the time comes g-d will make them the moshiach. Another meaning is that he started doing things which indicate he is the messiah at that very moment and started his mission and potentially this will be fulfilled in its entirety. Denying the second doesnt deny the first. But regarding even the second, you are reading lines of rambam uncritically without knowing the background of the sources or even the lubavitcher rebbes treatment on the subject. start there. Once he didn;t fulfill the criteria whatsoever, there were many even in out times who just as well could have been candidates. Which 'gedolei yisrael' gave a haskamah on this book?

Obviously God doesn't live in this world. I'm not talking about Creation I'm talking about the world the Builder's made. IN GOD WE TRUST? You're joking right? In all of God's creation you won't find a single penny. Some say once this world is perfected then G_D will come live in it. One said I'm not of this world. If you're waiting for somebody or the GOVERNMENT to come save you then you're in for a rude awakening. In all of Creation only Man perceives himself as naked. That's because he's disconnected from the rest of Creation and finds himself lost and alone. The only way he can know his Creator is to make his way back to the Garden but those pesky Cherubim with the flaming swords that turn every which way prevent the return of the impure.
Jesus wasn't born to save you Jesus was born to show us how to overcome the death that came in the beginning. You can believe whatever you want to believe, you can wait till the cows to come home for your hero to arrive or you could stand up on your own two feet and do for yourself what you should have been doing all along. I'm sorry to say, but I think the Rabbi is responding to the question emotionally. If the Rabbi is saying that, technically, the Rebbe could not be Moshiach today, because he is dead, then he could not have technically been the Moshiach then either, because Moshiach needs to be a prophet. A prophet has to receive prophecy for the first time in Israel, even if he receives consequent prophecies outside the Land. Since the Lubavitcher Rebbe had never been in Israel in his life, technically he could not qualify to be Moshiach, no matter how great he was in other areas.

And the Rashba (who was also a tremendous Kabbalist and I doubt that the Rebbe could hold a candle to the Rashba's proficiency in the Zohar) writes in a Tshuva (Responsa of the Rashba, vol. 1, siman 548), quoting what he received from the Chachmei Emes, that Moshiach must have received prophecy first in Eretz Yisroel before prophesying outside of the Land. This is similar to what Rashi writes in Maseches Moed Katan 25a.
The Rambam does not in any of his Seforim call someone a Novi Emes. He only uses the phrase Novi Emes twice in all of his Seforim. Once in Igeres HaShmad (and there it is in reference to Mohammed where someone is being forced to declare Mohammed as such) and once in Yad HaChazaka (Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah 10:2).

@@mordechaiperlman2283 "Nowhere in our Mesorah have we been told that only what the Rambam says is relevant to Yahadus in general and Moshiach in particular" Firstly this isnt true. Please see the sdei chemed's klali haposkim in the section title rambam, where he says that where no posek(raavad, kesef mishna etc.) argues on rambam its forced that they agree with him and this is the halacha. Such are the halachas brought in hilchos melachim on moshiach. The Rebbe quoted this countless times against the religious zionists on their claim of ischalta dgeulah as this goes against Rambam. Even if we say rashba disagrees with rambam as a posek halacha great that just means there is multiple opinions in which case obviously there is what to rely on. Your fetish for the rashba doesnt discount other valid opinions. As i stated the rebbe said all the chabad rebbeim are prophets. Even if the rashba knew the zohar better than the rebbe, that isnt relevant since the rebbe is claiming to speak from experience. Experience trumps learning (Ayin sham). Great, you tried to look up the words "navi emes" and got confused. Ta Shma:
"About fifty years ago or less, a pious and virtuous man and scholar by the name of Moses Al-Dar'i came
from Dar'a to the province of Andalusia to study under Rabbi Joseph ha-Levi, of blessed memory, ibn Migash,
of whom you very likely have heard. Later he left for Fez, the center of Maghreb. People flocked to him
because of his piety, virtue, and learning. He informed them that the Messiah had come, as was divinely
revealed to him in a dream. Yet he did not pretend based on a divine communication, as did the former
lunatic, that he was the Messiah. He merely affirmed that the Messiah had appeared. Many people became
his adherents and reposed faith in him.
      • My father and master, of blessed memory, endeavored to dissuade and discourage people from following
him. However only a few were influenced by my father, while most, nay nearly all clung to R. Moses, of
blessed memory. Finally he predicted events which came true no matter what was going to occur. He would
say: "I was informed yesterday--this and this would happen," and it did happen exactly as he foretold.....This miracle convinced all the people that he was undoubtedly a prophet. In itself this occurrence is not inconsistent with the tenets of the Torah, for prophecy shall return to Israel before the messianic advent, as i have previously explained....As this Muslim country no longer offered
him protection he left for Palestine where he died, may his memory be
      blessed.”

@@AccountingDept-w3e Using your rule, since the Rambam does not mention if the Navi had to have received his first prophecy in Eretz Yisroel, yet the Rashba does mention it, we have to say that the Rambam agrees with the Rashba. Aside from the fact that this is the Psak of the Gemara in Moed Katan.
Also, please provide a source for this story you quote about Moshe Daari, because in all the Sifrei HoRambam I looked in, it is not there.

@@mordechaiperlman2283 1. it is not MY rule. it is the rule brought in the sdei chemeds klali haposkim. 2. No, the sdei chemed does not say where ANYONE doesnt say anything against anyone that they agree with them. The rule is specifically in the section on Rambam(entitled klali harambam) since all the poskim go out of there way to comment on his work when they disagree. Notice the raavad etc comment when they disagree. Where they write nothing they clearly agree. v'Kal lhavin. This story of the rambam is to be found in iggeres teiman(its quoted by the Rebbe). It is also very shver to say on rambam that even though he listed in detail all the criteria for being a navi he failed to mention the most obvious "psak of the gemara" that he can only prophecy first in eretz yisroel. Quite a mistake. Instead despite his intense detail in those halachas he doesnt mention as one of the conditions any such thing as that its dependent on place.

The Messiah has already come, the books of Moses, Psalms and the prophets speak of Him - you have to deny God's Words not to believe this. He came as a Jew as promised, but not to save them only, no He is Saviour of all the nations of the world - as prophesied. His name is Jesus, born in Bethlehem, lived in Nazareth. You had better believe this - go read and believe God, not man - your life depends on your decision.

How pathetic! Christians are the ones who believe a Jewish man is a God! And Jesus was a grave sinner and bastard at that, whom the entire nation rejected during his lifetime. Every child knows he couldn'tbe the Messiah as he did not fulfill anything that would qualify him as such (e.g., bring peace to the world, rebuild the Temple, lead all the Jews back to Israel....). And he wasn't even descended from David, despite the Christain's convoluted ideas about how that can be possible

Total nonsense. Jesus failed every single prophecy that could be falsified, like Ezekiels temple, world peace, and the return of the Jewish exiles, in full to the land of Israel, where they will dwell in peace. When will you give up your false Messiah, and accept the one true God of Israel?

Jesus was a Jew who was sent to the Jews. He didn't come to preach to gentiles, and during his life he preached mainly to Jews. It was Paul and his subordinates who started preaching to gentiles, not Jesus.
Jesus said he came to confirm, follow and fulfill Jewish laws, not to abolish them. He told people not to change even a single letter of the law.
