How do I Speak with People who Believe the Rebbe is Moshiach? - Ask the Rabbi Live with Rabbi Mintz

  • Two weeks ago I spent Shabbos by a Chabad family. I asked innocently when the Lubavitcher Rebbe passed away? (June 12, 1994 btw). He hinted that he did not believe the Rebbe had died, but did not say his beliefs openly that he was still alive as to cause a hostility. In general, and this can happen many times and in different forms, how should one deal with these type of situations when he or she is confronted?
Oorah's founder, Rabbi Chaim Mintz, delivers a weekly Tuesday night class at Oorah's "Torah Spot" in Staten Island. The class is streamed live at www.oorah.org/r... each Tuesday night at 8:30pm
"Ask the Rabbi Live" session begins at 9:00. Send your question to be answered by Rabbi Mintz by submitting it to asktherabbi@oorah.org

To have any understanding of these concepts like Moshiach, being alive, a Tzaddik, miracles, G-dly... One needs to get the context, the background of the deep wisdom of Chassidus.
    Short point:
Chassidus started with the Baal Shem Tov, later, the Chabad school of Chassidus emerged with the Alter Rebbe.
It was and is, all a build up with a goal to bring moshiach and bring about the final and complete fusion of the reality of G-d with the Reality of the world. Of Physical and Spiritual. Heaven on Earth.
It's exactly this fusion of opposites, tradition teaches us, which is the ultimate purpose of creating the world in the first place.

      O.K. not fools, unfortunates.
      I learned some Rambam...,
According to the criteria he wrote, the only one in the world who can be Mashiach is indeed the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
And don't accuse us of arrogance to say that,
because we would have rather had him for ourselves..., now we have to share him with the entire world!!

    It's so ironic
    The rabbi gave 2 answers:
    A. The best and the classic Jewish approach is dialogue.
    B. If there's no point in dialogue then the next best thing is just don't talk about it.
Bow for the irony: the rabbi was referring to the host when he said "if he's not interested in dialogue"
But from the story there's no indication the host wasn't interested in dialogue. Quite the contrary the way the questioner stated his question it's quite clear he wasn't interested in dialogue!
Probably the host would have loved the chance to converse with you on the subject but the way the young man asked his question it's so obvious he has so much contempt for his host and his beliefs.
Why? Because it doesn't align with your beliefs? With so called reality? Don't you realize your beliefs don't align with most others beliefs and your beliefs don't align with most others perception of reality so why the contempt?
A little humility and discussion would make for better company.
Btw what was the point of the question? The question itself is so dumb and arrogant. What to do when I'm eating at a table with someone and I don't agree with their world view?

why do people need to feel nervous about telling people others when they are incorrect or mistaken? sometimes people are wrong - no matter their righteous intention.
if I see someone about to step on a nail, I will tell that person. that person may rationalize that they know the path they're on is righteous and G-d wills it. well, maybe me telling that person they are about to hurt their foot IS G-d protecting that person and keeping them on a righteous path?
we tell children they need to be open to correction when they are mistaken. as adults, are we now immune to the same lessons?

If he’s mentioning Talmudic discourse as being acceptable, why not mention that the Talmud clearly states that Moshiach can come from either the living or the “dead”? I place in quotes because the Torah also indicates many situations where although a great tzaddik experienced some type of passing, it was not the conventional loss of life which we associate with passing, but rather they exist and are in fact alive, yet in a more sublime and less revealed plane until the coming of Moshiach. For example, Yaakov Avinu, Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi, Eliyahu HaNavi, and others. Tanya explains that the highest tzaddikim have no need for the rectification of the grave since even their bodies are totally one with G-dliness. There are far too many sources to list here, but suffice to say that anyone who maintains that the Rebbe could not be Moshiach is ignorant. In order to proceed from acknowledging that he could be Moshiach in potential to comprehending that he is Moshiach in actuality one would need to study in depth both Rambam’s Hilchos Melachim chapters 11 and 12 as well as several of the pertinent sichos regarding Moshiach’s identity and activities from the Rebbe, the Nasi and Navi of our generation. A good place to start is Sichas Shoftim 5751.

This whole our dead Rebbe is moshiach is nonsense and does nothing but brings shame upon the Rebbe and his predecessors. They didn't bring about this amazing movement just so a small group of schmucks could reenact what the early Christians were probably like.

The answer to this is study of Tanach. Tell them to drop the idea of a Messiah as they know it, and start over by showing them verses in the prophets that clearly lay out what the future King of Israel is supposed to do, and the result. By studying from the source without pre-conceptions, they will then read the Rambam, and understand the words of the sages on the matter without creating a bubble of pre-conception around the text. If a person is certain that their past Rebbe is the King of Israel referenced in Tanach, the certainty that they have is unfortunately misguided, because nobody can be certain who the Messiah will be. Therefore, by asserting that a person's past Rebbe, or Rabbi is the Messiah, it is disrespectful if they are not correct, to the Creator, who is the one who chooses the Messiah at the right time. The people who are adamant that they are correct need to study more Tanach, and open up to the possibility that the Messiah could be someone else, who the Creator will choose in the right time, under the right circumstances.

The Rebbe simply is the culminating Rebbe/leader who's stated goal, in his first address as the Lubavitcher Rebbe, was and still is, to bring all that deep wisdom and Spiritual reality down "to earth" to actualize this long process and see to it's completion, aka the era of the Moshiach.
One cannot understand these ideas or claim an opinion without seeing the bigger picture, the broader context of this all that the writings of Chassidus give you, to understand the history and development as well as background of these ideas.
In the kabbalistic tradition, there are what is known as seven sefirot, stages in the flow of the life force and energy flowing from Above to earth.
The Seventh one is called Malchus, which literally means Kingship.

    • @chassidustechanalogy8711
      @chassidustechanalogy8711 5 лет назад +2

The concept of "Kingship", the Rebbes writings teach, is that Kingship embodies the culmination where all the developing stages (From the will, to the idea, to the understanding, to the feeling, to the communication) are actuallized. It is where it is all realized and comes, all the way from an abstract idea, to tangible fruition.
In context of what was written, this is the Geulah. The same redemption mankind, and G-d himself for that matter (as revealed in Torah) has been working towards, yearning for, since the very beginning of time...

I assure you, as someone who has studied and continues to study Chassidus almost daily, that when you open some works of Chassidic thought, known as Maamorim, and Sichot, and study them at your pace, you will begin to slowly see the context of all this, as illustarated briefly above, and the dots will start to connect.
But don't take my word for it. See for yourself. Face "the Book".

    • @chassidustechanalogy8711
      @chassidustechanalogy8711 5 лет назад +2

This idea of the Seventh reflects in the fact that the Rebbe is the Seventh generation Rebbe, in line from Chabad's Founder.
The paradigm of 7 sefirot is reflected and embodied in the seven Chabad Rebbes.
Again don't take my word for it. Study the writings of Chassidus before you assert conclusions.

@@flowerpuppeteer With all due respect, I completely disagree with you, but it's pointless to argue.
I'll just make this point because it's obvious, but often overlooked:
It doesn't matter who the Mashiach is, at the end of the day Hashem has a plan and whether it is the Rebbe or someone else it doesn't change anything. The destination is olam haba not Mashiach.
There is no benefit in claiming the Rebbe Z"L is Mashiach (other than gaava that chabadnikim have to "show off" that the Rebbe from their offshoot of chassidut is the Mashiach), there are only downsides to claiming the Rebbe Z"L is Mashiach.

If he meets the Torah criteria then we are sure he is the Mashiach and must believe and announce him as such.

@@flowerpuppeteer wanted to avoid a long discussion, which is why I didn't want to get into Rambam, but B"H I already argued it out with another guy, scroll down and see what I have to say about your favourite Rambam. (It's a long chain of comments)
      To add:
It really doesn't matter who Mashiach is, the need for criteria on who Mashiach is exists so that we avoid fake Mashiachs or even fake claims such as with the Rebbe ZTz"L
Obviously when the Mashiach comes most level headed people will use real Da'at Torah to ascertain that Mashiach is Mashiach, rather than the distorted Chabad version of Hilchot Melachim.

and in essence the "rabbi's" advice is not inline with a free choice/בחירה חופשית - or freedom of speech... rather "filtering" which topics people should talk about is like north korea not giving their people access to information that might "break up the cult"... because judaism is based on free choice - and not on indoctrination or communism - avoiding a topic is against jewish practice as the rabbi sort of said...

100% agreeable but theres another problem with ravs answer is i'm not sure whether this bochur or this rav has sat down and learned chassidus chabad or tanya or rambam inyei hageula moshiach he may have not heard stories or sichos from the rebbe M"HM and if you go and research certain sichos mammarim gemara rambam etc etc and this
is where we can get research and proof that rebbe is indeed in fact MH"M. I understand the inyanim of certain people but this bochur and this rav should do a little more research into there points are valid but theres much more research that should be done go to a posek another rav and ask this shailah just dont go to one rav and find out do as much research as you can. LEARN AND ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU GET ANSWERS
LONG LIVE OUR MASTER TEACHER REBBE KING MOSHIACH FOREVER AND EVER!

Manifestation of God for this age is Baha'u'llah, the founder of the Baha'i faith.
"Regarding your question concerning the future of the Jews: They certainly have, as explicitly stated by the Master, a great spiritual destiny, and will gradually enter the Faith in large groups."
(From a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi to an individual believer, November 13, 1937, Lights of Guidance, no. 1681)
...they (Jews) will be gradually led to embrace the Faith which, indeed, constitutes the only means of salvation to their race."
