Hi Yarrow! Thank you for another outstanding and informative video. Is there a variety of hops that you prefer to cultivate over another? Always looking forward to the next one. Kind regards
Hi Yarrow. Thanks for sharing so much great herbal information. I really love your work. Keep it up. Have you done a video on Salal (Gaultheria Shallon)?
How could I have forgotten about hops! 🌿 Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge - another great video! As per your question... - Mountain ash (Rowan) - Spruce (white, black, blue) - Pine (scotch or maybe lodgepole) - Lilac - Russian olive - Goji
Hey Yarrow, Your botanical knowledge is impressive. Tutorials on adaptogens native to North America would be welcome Thanks again for sharing your encyclopedic knowledge with us.
Moved to a new location and found wild hops growing. I have a belief that nature provides what I will need on the land I connect with. Looking forward to seeing how the plants matures now that it isn't being mown.
Went through several drinking phases, same abv intake. One had a ton of hops and one was just alcohol diluted to the same abv. Whenever hops were present my gut health was much better, albeit gaseous.
Gruit predates Roman rule. Gruit was a loose term used for mixtures of regional herbs and spices gathered seasonally throughout Europa. It was stored in gruit houses and each region used different recipes rooted in what grew locally. The ales made using gruit were nutrient and medicinal enzyme rich probiotic beverages that acted as daily medicine. It empowered people and made them healthy and increased their vitality. The gathering of gruit was a seasonal activity that connected the people with the land and allowed villages to use their gruit supply in trade. The brutal Roman empire saw the profitability in controlling gruit supplies throughout Europa and claimed it as "there's" under their regime. They did not destroy the gruit industry, but enslaved it as they did with most things. It was the reinheitsgebot or "purity order" implemented by German rule as early as 1516 that began the destruction and outlaw of gruit used in ale in regions formerly under Roman rule. The reinheitsgebot limited, by law and enforcement of German rule, the ingredients that could be used in beer (or bier) brewing for several reasons. It gave them control of the grain industry, and reduced human vitality by using only a mild sedative with high levels of phytoestrogen as flavoring and tannic preservative, thus dulling the spirit of the masses. Gruit houses were destroyed and made illegal to operate. This contributed to over production of homogenized grain, and to our modern disconnect of regional and seasonal plant medicines. This hollow sedative was then spread throughout the planet in place of indigenous medicinal fermentations in the colonial force of "purity" leading to illness of indigenous populations wherever it supplanted local medicines. Hops have wonderful medicinal effects when used specifically and in moderation, but that is not how beer has been used historically.
As a gardener, I find this plant's looks quite intoxicating. The lovely vines, large leaves, and beautiful buds make this a must in next year's garden I look forward to growing hops and learning more about this wonderful plant. ❤
I had hops growing in my yard up a tree and a woodchuck found it and decided it was great; ate my plant and destroyed it. It is no more; I was quite upset about it.
At 6:20 you mention that beer is often used to wipe away sorrows. This reminded me of an interesting fact I read in Medical Herbalism by David Hoffmann - hops are contraindicated for people with depression as consumption of hops may exacerbate symptoms. This fact has lead me down quite a few interesting trains of thought...
Thanks Yarrow. I am sitting here in Calgary right now drinking an *aqueous* infusion wherein I take Mountain Rose dried hops cones and set them in boiling water overnight in a sealed glass container. Always works for me to relax me for bed the next night. Now I know that ethanol should work better as a solvent. Funny, I really like the bitter tastes and unique aroma whereas many of my house guests dislike it (yet they can tolerate beer which I cannot).
Excellent tutorial! I have hops and scullcap tea brewing as I write this. I am going to go start a tincture right now! Thanks for the great information.
That's why beer and cannabis pair perfectly well together!... The psychoactive drug that hops contains is called Lupuline which is similar in composition as THC in pot!
The first time I drank a HOPLITE I was HIGH for 8-12 hours. Every time I have had one afterwards it never produced those effects on me so powerfully. Must have been a killer batch!
Those hops look still v green, I find if I harvest them just after the strobiles have started to turn golden, this maximises the resin content. A bit like waiting till cannabis bud hairs go orange/brown to get maximum resin.
I just discovered your channel today while search for what I can do with my Cascade Hops plant. I planted the rhizome about 5 years ago and it grows prolifically. I originally bought it to flavor my kombucha brews but I never did anything with them. You have gotten me interested in making a tincture and such. I had no idea they had medicinal properties. I didn't know what I had growing out there and all its potential. Many thanks and I just subbed to your channel.
Hops contains iso-opiates which is why it has pain relieving and sedative properties. It also has estrogenic properties so it can also be a hormonal disruptor in men just like soy.
Hey Yarrow! This is a great video - It really inspired a new product that we came up with... I so wanted to call it Wobbly Pop!!! The benefits of hops are amazing.. keep up the good work :)
Thank you for the information on hops. Will you have another video showing how to make the tincture? Have you done a video on Ashawagonda? I actually grew it this year for the first time.
Hey Yarrow! Thank you so much for your videos. I am so grateful for the work you do, and the knowledge you share. I am pregnant and thinking of putting together a herbal kit to use throughout pregnancy and also to use during labor. I was thinking adding some hops to a relaxing herbal bath during labor might be very useful! I find it very difficult to find much information about herbs to use during pregnancy, and thought you might be willing to make a video on this subject matter. THANKS again! - Whitney
totally, hops is an awesome herb for use during labour. I think about is a great way to do it that’s always a tincture or even a high hopped beer. Another thing to think about around birthing is that many of the uterine tonics that are count indicated during pregnancy are helpful during labour and afterwards.
Just found your channel when looking for natural remedies for chronic pain... I'm really excited about all your amazing informative videos, thank you!🙏 I think I will try to grow some hops and poppies this summer...😊
I have been doing a herbalism class and the facilitators made a Hops tincture for us to take this month and notice how it affects us. I am not supposed to research it, but I did! Hehe 😅
I would like to see a video on BITTERS. Currently I use them for my Hypothyroidism. Could you add a touch of hops to the Bitters? I have sleep issues as well. Thank you and GOD bless

Great video, but I have a question on one of your other great videos: Mullein. I live in a area that freezes in the winter. Will freeze of the mullein leaves hurt the effectiveness of the herb? Thank you for your informative videos.
Hello … I heard the great mullein can be smoked and helps people quit smoking. Best of luck! I quit smoking 12 years ago. Best decision I ever made. Life changing.
Beer loaded with hops is among my pain medicine. Hops are the only thing that works for specific kinds of pain like ani levator sindrome. Like right now.
Thank you for this invaluable information, what a powerful plant! I have hops on my property that I would like to tincture but they have some light brown spots (covering about 20% of most flowers) -should I not use them as medicine with these blemishes?
Does the hops tincture need to be made with fresh hops? 1/2 - 1 teaspoon under tongue a recommended dosage? When using the tincture topically do I mix it with a carrier oil or can I apply it directly to the pain area?
Dear Yarrow, since I also watched your previous video on pine pollen, and read Stephen's book about testosterone as well, I was wondering if anything changed by then. Is it nor bad in the end to consume small amounts of hop beer as a man? Thanks in advance!
Years ago I brewed a strong hops tea and it felt like my heart and lungs wanted to stop working, depressing my system intensively. I vowed not to do that again and am apprehensive about using hops now! Haha

Nice
Any truth in the claims that hops has negative effects on reproductive organs and makes woman get their periods early?
Where would they grow. Wild. Kentucky
Just harvested hops for the first time this year- since I’ve quit drinking hops tea has been a wonderful alternative for me
How do you like it? I just ordered some hops to make tea too!
Went through several drinking phases, same abv intake. One had a ton of hops and one was just alcohol diluted to the same abv. Whenever hops were present my gut health was much better, albeit gaseous.
Is it basically the same gut interaction as a super mixed hop premium IPA?

Do ants avoid hops, also spider mites and aphids ? and the leaves, do they taste good?
I think i might be just slightly allergic to hops, i feel as if im in the beginning of getting a cold when i drink the tea, but not beer. 😖
Hello, do you sell any of the products? Thanks
Do you sell Hops Resin, if not do you know any Apothecaries that do? Ty!!!
Can you use it in different ways than you mentioned? Maybe smoking it?? Great video by the way
How much hops powder do I take if I put it in capsules?
Is it possible that decarbing the flowers, then putting them through a butter (or oil) machine would produce a good product?
So, if it's extracted by fat, would it be good to cook with the flowers? Maybe make a hops butter?
P.S. is it truly estrogenic?
Make bullet proof hops tea.
Does the hops tincture need to be made with fresh hops? 1/2 - 1 teaspoon under tongue a recommended dosage? When using the tincture topically do I mix it with a carrier oil or can I apply it directly to the pain area?

If you buy dried hops flowers( my local food coop), are there viable seeds in the dried flowers to germinate hops plants?
No, fertilised females have lower oil yields so males aren’t tolerated in hop yards. Best to buy roots, in winter, from a breeder if you want to grow.
Best to buy a rhizome for whatever variety you want. Or if you know someone with a hop plant, you could take a rhizome cutting.
