All Hopped Up - Medicinal Benefits of Hops

  • Join me in exploring the many benefits that Hops offers, both as a hoppy wobbly pop (beer) and as a herbal medicine..
Int his video you will learn how this potent plant can be helpful for issues such as:
Anxiety, Tension, Insomnia, Digestion, Pain, Reproductive health and more…
Even though beer is by far the most common way Hops is used these days, I find find a fresh tincture to be the most therapeutic, though it can also be made into a tea, poultice, or dream pillow, and makes a great addition to other fermented beverages such as kombuchas and meads.
If you're looking to drink beer for its hoppy benefits, remember to go easy on it as many of the benefits become the opposite after 3 or 4. As well, it is best to look to local artisanal high hopped brew rather than a conventional large scale produced beer, if you are planing to get "All Hopped Up."
Do you have experience in working with Hops as a Medicine?
    Please share your comments below.
    Cheers,
    Y~

Gruit predates Roman rule. Gruit was a loose term used for mixtures of regional herbs and spices gathered seasonally throughout Europa. It was stored in gruit houses and each region used different recipes rooted in what grew locally. The ales made using gruit were nutrient and medicinal enzyme rich probiotic beverages that acted as daily medicine. It empowered people and made them healthy and increased their vitality. The gathering of gruit was a seasonal activity that connected the people with the land and allowed villages to use their gruit supply in trade.
The brutal Roman empire saw the profitability in controlling gruit supplies throughout Europa and claimed it as "there's" under their regime. They did not destroy the gruit industry, but enslaved it as they did with most things.
It was the reinheitsgebot or "purity order" implemented by German rule as early as 1516 that began the destruction and outlaw of gruit used in ale in regions formerly under Roman rule. The reinheitsgebot limited, by law and enforcement of German rule, the ingredients that could be used in beer (or bier) brewing for several reasons. It gave them control of the grain industry, and reduced human vitality by using only a mild sedative with high levels of phytoestrogen as flavoring and tannic preservative, thus dulling the spirit of the masses. Gruit houses were destroyed and made illegal to operate. This contributed to over production of homogenized grain, and to our modern disconnect of regional and seasonal plant medicines. This hollow sedative was then spread throughout the planet in place of indigenous medicinal fermentations in the colonial force of "purity" leading to illness of indigenous populations wherever it supplanted local medicines.
Hops have wonderful medicinal effects when used specifically and in moderation, but that is not how beer has been used historically.

I am sitting here in Calgary right now drinking an *aqueous* infusion wherein I take Mountain Rose dried hops cones and set them in boiling water overnight in a sealed glass container. Always works for me to relax me for bed the next night. Now I know that ethanol should work better as a solvent. Funny, I really like the bitter tastes and unique aroma whereas many of my house guests dislike it (yet they can tolerate beer which I cannot).

totally, hops is an awesome herb for use during labour. I think about is a great way to do it that’s always a tincture or even a high hopped beer.
Another thing to think about around birthing is that many of the uterine tonics that are count indicated during pregnancy are helpful during labour and afterwards.

Hops tea or a beer is a remedy for premature ejaculation. Perhaps it is the general sedative nature, so I would presume that valerian would accomplish a similar effect. Thanks for this video. I think your historical "anti-catholic motive" is a little off. You said that in 1516 hops became the major herb in brewing beer. Luther put up his theses in 1517; commonly seen as the beginnings of the protestant revolution. If hops were an anti-catholic thing and were dominant in 1516, the timeline doesn't add up.

Is it possible that decarbing the flowers, then putting them through a butter (or oil) machine would produce a good product?

Does the hops tincture need to be made with fresh hops? 1/2 - 1 teaspoon under tongue a recommended dosage? When using the tincture topically do I mix it with a carrier oil or can I apply it directly to the pain area?

Dear Yarrow, since I also watched your previous video on pine pollen, and read Stephen's book about testosterone as well, I was wondering if anything changed by then. Is it nor bad in the end to consume small amounts of hop beer as a man? Thanks in advance!

I picked some today, but they’re a bit dried up already (although still rich in the nice smelling resin). Is it ok?

If you buy dried hops flowers( my local food coop), are there viable seeds in the dried flowers to germinate hops plants?

No, fertilised females have lower oil yields so males aren’t tolerated in hop yards. Best to buy roots, in winter, from a breeder if you want to grow.

Best to buy a rhizome for whatever variety you want. Or if you know someone with a hop plant, you could take a rhizome cutting.
