  • Join Herbalist Yarrow Willard in another addition of the Herbal Jedi Video series. This time he is Mulling over Mullein (Verbascum blattaria, V. thapsus).
Mullein is a plant that has a rich history of use in every place it has been found, and it can be found all over the place.
In this full length episode, Yarrow goes deep into many of the benefits and ways in which the leaf, flower and root of Mullein can be prepared as medicine, including benefits to working with the tea, tincture, macerated oil, and flower essence.
Plus like always the Herbal Jedi adds in a few extra gems on working with wild plants and health in general.
Mullein - Verbascum blattaria, V. thapsus
Identification: Mullein is a biennial herb, producing a rosette of broad leaves in its first year. It has an erect stem 30-200 cm tall. The second year the leaves and stem are covered with dense, grey, felt-like hairs. The leaves are alternate, elliptical to oblanceolate, 10 - 40 cm long. The lower leaves have petioles while the upper leaves are sessile. The flowers are in spike-like racemes and are bright yellow.
Distribution & Habitat: Mullein grows in waste areas, along railroad tracks, dry meadows, pastures, gravely banks and around settlements. It can be found throughout North America and surprisingly, it is an introduced plant from Europe.

My husband had coronavirus and could not make it seven feet without stopping to catch his breath, it was horrible but he was not sick enough to be on a ventilator so we just had to find a way to help him at home after weeks of drinking at least a half gallon of mullein tea per day sweetened with honey and flowers of the mullein plant he is still having leftover covid-19 but his breathing has improved 100%.I am not a doctor and I'm not saying Mullen is a cure I'm saying Mullen has been used for millennia for bronchial issues it has been used for so long for one simple reason...... We asked my dad why he would mow around this huge weed in the middle of the yard. He told us about mullein and that his mom would give them a tea made of leaves when they had colds and flu. Even though he never made it himself, he kept that plant in honor of his mother.

The wife and I have been harvesting Mullien for a couple years, mainly just the leaves which we would dry and use for tea, smudge, and smoking mixture. We really enjoyed watching this video which touched on the use of the flowers - something that we just simply didn't consider while harvesting the leaves! Today, the wife and I went out and harvested about 2 full Mason jars of just the flowers, going to follow your lead and make some medicine!

hippy - hippie |ˈhipē| (also hippy) (esp. in the 1960s) a person of unconventional appearance, typically having long hair and wearing beads, associated with a subculture involving a rejection of conventional values and the taking of hallucinogenic drugs."
A sub culture started by MK Ultra and the CIA in Laurel Canyon
stoner |ˈstōnər| 1 informal a person who regularly takes drugs, esp. marijuana : I was a real stoner when I was a teenager.

why do people insist on applying labels on people which were created by the powers that control us? This is nature, it's herbology, and anyone can learn how to it's old as the hills, it not a hippie's nor a stoner forte. Last year I rescued a baby mullein form a lady who was killing them as weeds. I educated her in the value of the plant and she left two to mature and flower. My baby has grown to a 7 ft tall beauty and is flowering now but the leaves are like lace-work due to the mullein moth . It is the sole food source for this moth and I had quite a nursery of caterpillars but that's ok because the moth is a prolific night pollinator. Hand twirl the trunk against a flat board with a notch cut in it. This makes a good hot powder that turns into a glowing ember. Then you put that in a prepared bird's nest and blow and you have fire. Look up hand drill fire.

Amazing, I've been fighting diabetes for 22 years. A brittle diabetic, up to 7 shots a day. I've been praying for God to give me knowledge somehow. A couple weeks ago I found out there is a white mulberry and crabapple tree in the yard of my new house. I'm so happy I found your site. I've been eating 'weeds' for a while - a friend we in a Russian Prison camp at one time - she was a child and they had nothing to eat - so they'd reach through small openings in the fencing around the camp and eat lamb's quarters. She told me this many years ago and I became fascinated by 'weeds' and how to use them - purslane came up all over our yard one year - just tons of it and a Native American friend told me that when a plant does this, it means you 'need' it - it was along time ago, but I had breast cancer, gallbladder explosion and other health issues then and I can't help but wonder if my land wasn't trying to tell me something.

3 Years later after my last comment here, I can attest to the power of mullein tincture to help my asthma. I take 15 drops of tincture in a glass of water once a day and so far I've not had to use the Advair inhaler for spring asthma. I'm allergic to albuterol and the alternative so I've been without an emergency inhaler since they discontinued Max Air. I also used it when I had a bad cold and was still coughing afterwards. And I do smoke too much. I did not make the tincture myself, but the plant does grow here and this year I'll make my own. It's a wonderful plant and I'm so grateful to it and how fast it works.

She looked at me like I was from another planet. I told her that the worst that could happen is that it won't work.

delighted to have run into this video. Due to the Canadian wildfire smoke arriving in Ohio end of June 2023 I found myself wide awake at 3am gasping for every breath. The smoke was not visible and news did not adequately warn us to stay inside while this was occurring. I turned 60 this year and the after effects of covid which I caught real bad in Oct 2019 has diminished my energy level by half. Thankfully my A/C and Austin air filter spared me some of the misery I had on that first day thinking it was tree/grass pollen or some unknown malady. On my daily 4 mile walk up the road I noticed a super healthy plant which caught my attention. No more than a couple days later the top had been harvested by someone who beat me to it. Luckily I found several more tops not too far away which I grabbed up and brought back to my own garden. I read tea from the dried leaves is the easiest way to use it but am glad I researched it a bit before diving in. The tops I picked were by then dried and full of seeds which I read can be toxic. I nearly tried a cup of mullein seed tea which I see can be narcotic. Surprise. Always read or listen to an extremely cool and informed gentleman like this guy before taking the plunge. I'll be listening to your other videos real soon now I'm certain. THANK YOU

Another excellent video! I started my mullein flower oil this morning before watching this but forgot to wilt the flowers first, thanks for reminding me. I'll start a second batch and compare them.
One trick I learned to help infused oils keep longer is to add a little salt (I use celtic) after the herb has been strained out. If there is any moisture, it grabs onto it and takes it to the bottom, then you can pour the oil off & leave the watery part behind.
I use mullein for swollen glands, too. As a compress, or the oil topically or the tincture of the leaves internally. It's also helpful for groin injuries.I make mullein cough syrup by the jar & keep it handy for coughs/irritation from the dry air we have from heating with wood.
I use the root a LOT. I make a decocted tincture, then put that in a spray bottle. I have a hip joint that plays up on me occasionally, if I spray that on at night and rub it in, it never fails to help the joint to slide back into place. Good for a 'crick in the neck' as well. It smells like vanilla, delicious. The excellent herbalist jim mcdonald uses root tincture by the drop, internally, for similar purpose.

What an informative video! We've had Mullein take up residence in our herb garden over the last several years, and we've always thought it looked so neat! I would 100% take an herbology class given by this gentleman. What great energy!

WOW! I have listened and read so much about Mullein this last month, because I had grown one from seed, BUT this video was the best ever, I could actually understand what he was talking about, love the way he explains stuff. I cant wait until my mullein is ready to harvest so I can try all this stuff out...THANK YOU JEDI

Helps to be in an herb garden, for sure. I don't have that luxury. So I find a lot of herbs off the trails that I walk. I have an app on my phone, called "All Trails". It shows all the known trails near you. There are so many in my location I don't think I can ever walk them all. But, the idea is that I usually find some herb/plant on the edges of these trails. I then can mark the GPS location of the herb/plant or tree. So I have a ready made database of where my herbs/plants or trees of interest are. My herb garden is on the wild trails of New Hampshire.
