  • Season 2, episode 15 is here. Dominic, Connor, Erica, and Mark have a wonderful conversation with 5 time Emmy Award Winning visual effects maestro Ronald B Moore, VFX steward of Star Trek TNG, TNG films, VOY, and ENT (not to mention Ghostbusters and more).
We discuss Ronald's entry into VFX, breaking into "the business" and long hours. How he helped to push the Television Academy to recognize VFX as its own awards category, just how hilarious his first Emmy loss was and making infamous Planet Dog Poo. Wash is looking great, has been outside enjoying the LA rain. Erica gets some fan questions in, a round of Star Trek Trivia, and we subject Ron to being Stuck on a Deserted Island with Connor Trinneer.”
It's a special one for fans of the sausage factory, 'cause this guy made the ships look good and the transporter swirl... Get cozy with your favorite cocktail or coffee mug, this one's a riot!

Something I'm guilty of doing is supremely underrating and underappreciating sfx/vfx in sci-fi shows so I was really grateful for Ron's perspectives and experiences behind the scenes. Also appreciated Dom, Connor and Erica asking some specific questions that would shed light for some of us who are laypeople in the audience that we may not have understood or got w/o them jumping in with those questions. Thanks so much for this interview, guys!

Connor, Dom, Erica and Mark - congrats on another engrossing episode! I've been wondering when we'd get someone from the VFX team on the show and lo and behold you got Ronald on the Pod! Super interesting to hear about all different processes and techniques he's utilized throughout his career. Very cool that some of them he continued to use within the many iterations of Trek he's had a hand in working on. The long hours certainly sounded gruelling, and I can only imagine the amount of patience you'd have to have while working to make sure everything looked just perfect. Ron's opinion about how so much focus in film and television CGI nowadays is all flash and no substance rings very true, especially where Marvel is concerned. (Those poor overworked and underpaid staff...) Love that he just mentioned Threshold after the warp speed trivia question too, it made me laugh. (It's a good episode dammit!) All in all, another awesome episode, I can't to see what next week has in store! Happy Shuttlepod Sunday everyone! 😊🖖💚🍃

    Greetings from Bulgaria!
What an amazing episode. It was lovely to hear all those stories from Ron and in fact how time consuming was to do visual effects in those days. Because of people like Ron, Dan Curry, Rick Sternbach, Rob Legato, John Knoll and all the rest, as a kid I was inspired and driven to learn about design and motion graphics. Now, I have my own small design studio, where I do motion design and 3D. All those interviews with these guys, bits and pieces of information I was able to find in the early days of Internet help me out and motivated me to get in that field.
Enormous Thank you and will always be grateful for giving me this drive and inspiration!

While much of what Ron was talking about with the photochemical compositing and work with mattes I was familiar with, I think it was great that Dom and Connor stopped him and asked, numerous times "what does that mean?" It is easy for those in the know to not realize that not everyone, or even most people, including those in the biz will know how the magic is made.
