Hey! That's my bike! Same color it's also the next upgrade I'm going to do. Awesome video!
*Edited: Same color but my frame is an R400 looks like the only difference is that enormous headtube.

Thanks for the comment, and please take a moment to subscribe if you haven't already! Very cool bike you got, though! I wish this one was my size because it's a great bike, and the new fork just makes it even better!

I converted a bad headshok fork into a fixed fork, by simply inserting a piece of 3/4 pex pipe, cut to length, to fit tight inside the headshok cap. Cost zero$. Works great! And you don't even have to take the fork off the bike.

You can call me Randy Jackson because that's a no from me dawg LOL! Someone actually did this to a bike I have and I wasn't pleased to see the most valuable parts gutted and trashed for a wobbly, ill-fitting and choppy feeling version of a rigid fork. It's 1000% better to sell off the OEM Headshok and do the job correctly, or rebuild the headshok. Heck you can MAKE MONEY selling the headshok broken on ebay and buying a rigid fork that does the job right!

Hoping to do this on my 90's XS800 commuter as the headshok no longer locks out.
Do you know if something like the Cannondale KP058 conversion kit would work or is that meant for more modern options?
    Thanks for the great video!

Hi ChickenCoop thanks for the comment and please take a moment to subscribe! You can find the headset adapter cups I used in the description, if you liked the headshok working with the lock you should DEFINITELY reach out to Mendon Cycles the guy there is a headshok expert and it's pretty budget friendly to fix the lock! www.mendoncyclesmith.com/

@@D2WrenchWorksDIY Subscribed and ordered! I noticed you don't have a link for the fork race. Was that included with the headset cup or did you have to purchase that separately? Thank you for the lead!

Awesome! When you buy new headsets they come with a new race in the box! New top cap and bolt too!

Does this drop the front significantly? I'm looking at mine, and it appears to be about a 2 inch difference between forks.

Thanks for the question, please take a moment to subscribe! Not really at all, the headshok only had 25mm of movement or something small like that and then the other difference is the headset cup difference which was probably 10mm. The important part is using the same rake (fork geometry) as this is what changes ride characteristics the most, if you look at the before and after picture it looks more normal "after" and thats with a traditional stem too. I think the headshok made is sit upright kinda weird on the road geometry and thats also why it has such a weird stem stock or "before".

Is that a Suspension corrected rigid fork? Isn't this something you need to consider? I am considering do this on a Cdale MTB and the silk road fork is NOT raked like yours! What should I replace it with?

    • @D2WrenchWorksDIY
      @D2WrenchWorksDIY  22 дня назад +1

Hi Wilytuber and thanks for the question! Please take a moment to subscribe! All forks rigid or suspension have an angle to them, called the rake. On a OEM suspension bike, you are asking about adding a larger travel fork and yes there will be minor changes but you should stay close to oem travel to minimize it, somewhat. You may notice the steering is faster or slower depending on the way you went in suspension travel. Its extremely likely you wont though, at first a bigger fork may steer slower, or not be as twitchy but you will soon adjust. When it's minor differences like this, you dont see any negative performances. Now going from an 80mm fork to an 140mm travel fork is a substantial difference but on a hardtail where geometry isn't as affected you could get away with it. l always try to match the travel of the original fork to what I got or slightly bigger and its always worked well for me. Also I'd always recommend at least trying it, regardless, because a bike being able to be ridden is better than one that cant!

Why did you abandon the Headshock? Did it fail?
I'm afraid the 30mm headshock o my 20 year old XS800 will eventually give up the ghost, and I'll have to bin it. Which is why I'm here, looking for a way to keep my bike rolling if-and-when.
    Cheerz

Hi Brian! Thanks for the comment and please take a moment to subscribe! I also did a video you can checkout on this Cannondale Silkroad here: ruclips.net/video/OYAbuOsrb2c/видео.html
I actually still have the headshok! But it definitely needed a rebuild, the lock was super sketchy and I don't want to sell a bike to someone in that condition.
It was a perfect moment to exhibit the frame and show the potential but I definitely plan on rebuilding the headshok and doing a video when I have time!

@@D2WrenchWorksDIY Don't worry. I'm subbed! BTW: You mentioned "selling a bike in that condition." Are old 'dales in demand in your neck of the woods? Do you have any idea what one like yours would go for if it had a working Headshock? Just very roughly? I looked around online, but the only relevant hit I got was from 2016! Cheers

ALL my bikes are in demand 😁 hahaha but in all seriousness, Treks and Cannondale's are usually my best sellers. Also thanks for subscribing! One of the other reasons I pulled the headshok is because in my experience it actually hurts resale. I had a similar 90s bike with a 700c Rockshox Ruby fork that had small suspension travel just like the headshock. Took me FOREVER to sell it and that dont happen often. It's a cool feature especially if you are like me and will ride your roadbike everywhere but people like seeing a nice new shiny carbon fork instead of a old weird fork they're super unsure of and can be a huge pain to maintain. Headshok is worth more to sell it on ebay especially if working too. Broken ones are easily worth $75, working and locking I would expect double. I would also expect if your Silk road is cosmetically in great shape and in a restored shape like mine you can easily get $450-$550 depending where you are located. I have a patreon you can find pinned in the comments, where I can help you sell your bike and share my whole ad with you to use as a template if you decided to go that way!
