  • I’m back with another product review! I’m chatting about Mortal Hydration, by popular request. FYI, I have no affiliation with this company, and I purchased these products. Also, sorry for the vertical video - totally forgot to flip the phone for RUclips (still fairly new here)!
Mortal Hydration is the new official hydration partner of Ironman events in North America. This is a big switch from Gatorade Endurance, and many of my clients (and fellow RDs) are NOT happy about it.
    Let’s break it down.
    What is it?
Mortal Hydration is a powder that you mix with water to provide a small amount of carbs, varying amounts of electrolytes, and fluids. Each packet gives 10g of carbs and around 40 calories, and you are instructed to mix with 22oz of water. The regular flavors have 450mg sodium and the “salty” versions have 920mg sodium, giving a concentration of 650mg/L and 1330mg/L, respectively.
    What does it taste like?
Mortal Hydration comes in three flavors - berry, mango, and margarita. All of them contain stevia, so if you don’t like that taste, this product is not for you. The salty flavors taste very salty to me, while the regular ones just taste sweet (not in a good way).
This product may work well if:
You like or don’t mind stevia
You prefer to get most of your carbs from gels or food
This product may not work well if:
    You hate stevia
You prefer to get more carbs from your fluids
    My take:
I’m not a fan of this product. Not only does it taste gross, but most long course triathletes I work with prefer to get more liquid carbs in as part of their fueling plan, especially on the bike. Also, the stevia is in it apparently to boost the sweetness and flavor profiles, but to me, it just makes it intolerable. I’d rather have more sugar.
However, there’s nothing inherently wrong with this product IF you don’t mind the taste and you’re fine getting your carbs elsewhere. In theory, this product could work well when taken with Maurten gels, which don’t contain much sodium and are offered on course. If you’re racing IM this year, I encourage you to try it yourself and come to your own conclusions.
If you’ve tried this product or want to weigh in, let me know what you think!

I mix 60-100g white sugar and 1 salty margarita packet into a 32oz bottle for use cycling. The taste is amazing with the extra sugar, and it fits into my fueling perfect.

Thanks for sharing that and that's great you're getting the carbs in. To me, the product tasted so sweet as is that I imagine it would be way too sweet with the sugar added, but I'm so glad that it works for you! This is a great example of how everyone has such different taste preferences and tolerances, and why it's important to try things for yourself :)
