This sounds are so iconic to me, I had so many experiences in hearing them, down to deleting worlds as a kid to getting scared of being alone in a minecraft server kinda weird thing to say but I can't imagine minecraft without this random creppy ambience, almost all of them are just hellish random sounds that can't be explained and I think thats why they are pretty effective at making you scared since you can't identify what or who is making those sounds. Even those that you can correlate with in game context (cave 16 sounding like minecarts for example), they can really catch you off guard, specially with cave16 and being in a mineshaft can give you small heart attack.

apparently when notch added these sounds in, secret friday updates were a thing, basically he would update the game every friday with a secret new thing that you had to discover. the thing is that he added these in on a thursday. imagine playing minecraft alpha and not expecting an update, and the game just starts making these noises while in a dark spooky cave, no explanation

One thing I hope comes with the cave update is cave noises to signify something in a cave. For example 16 could signify a mineshaft is nearby as the banging noises could come from the supports, or ones like 15 or wind noises could signify a stronghold
