The coolest thing about Halo CE to me was that it seemed like bungie was essentially a bunch of nerds who wanted to make something they thought was cool. It’s incredibly endearing and inspiring.
@@smoli That's how it still is in small productions and indie games.
I remember their motto: "We make games we want to play." That was also really endearing, because it felt like they were no different than the people buying and playing their games. Just a bunch of people who wanted to play good and fun games, same as us.
@@just_matt214 I dont think he was referring to games in general, rather how the developers of halo used to be. Before the dark times
Now it's super corporate. It's good to know my instincts were accurate, that the original Halos were just a bunch of nerds making something they thought was cool. The inclusion of something like the Breaking Benjamin in Halo 2 was the kind of insanity you'd never see in a modern, corporate game.
Agreed, and with that mentality years later, they sit there and criticize what they could have done better. A sign of a true and dedicated game designer, no matter the impact, it could always be better.
O'Donnell: Praising everything he did.
Staten: Remembers everything.
Jones: Doesn't remember anything.
Jones worked on the gameplay didn't he ?
@@letsgobrandon8101 he doesn't know.
Probably a result of the traumatic development of Halo 2
Lmao
i dont like marty odonnel. he has musical talent but he has a stupid personality. he will be a buddy for overrated halo yters like noodles and actman
Alternative title: halo developers roast their own game
the halo 2 developer commentary is more of this
That is honestly the best way to tell the creative talent, for any media, actually gives a shit about the work they are doing.
@@DubElementMusic If you give a shit about something you've made, you'll criticise it and its flaws. If you sit there and say it's amazing and there's nothing wrong with it, you probably don't care about what you're doing and/or are really bad at it.
@@hannibalbackatya1182 I DONT THIN KTHEY CARE
I mean these guys are basically masters of the craft this is one of their early projects. Years of solved problems and new ideas of course they're gonna talk smack like an " oh we were young and dumb" kinda smack
“Wasn’t there a story where Cortana became drunk with power and wanted to take over the universe? What happened to that story?”
“It was too good”
💀
It became Halo 5 and then immediately destroyed between games
@@ZZCAR1 Well I guess Joe or who ever was right to talk Jason out of that Idea.
@@ZZCAR1 We know, sadly we can't forget.
@@LostShipMate Lets just be glad they moved past that
Translation: it was too good
Halo CE looks shockingly good considering how old it is
It's as old as me and has held up much better lol
Good art direction and level design, just like how half life 2 still holds up or tf2.
Like the other guy said Art Design will always trump Graphics
I still think it was one of the best looking games on the OG Xbox and it was a launch title
@@mindofmyown333 Halo 2 and Chronicles of Riddick were the best looking FPS on Xbox, but Halo was truly a stunning display as a starter title. But its simplicity and art direction actually give it somewhat timeless look, like early 3D nintendo titles.
It's really sad that all three of these guys went separate ways. They were the dream team for FPS games like the Chrono Trigger crew was the dream team to RPGs.
What an awesome analysis. I doubt we will ever get shooters or rpgs on that level of creativity again. Good times though!
Jason Jones and Joe Staten absolutely didnt like working with each other
Jason turned into a greedy asshole, Marty and Joe are still legends.
@@TheStrayHALOMAN Even Marty's kind of a boomer nowadays and he was always a bit up his own ass apparently. Still an incredible composer who didn't deserve getting his *goose* cooked.
@@icyjiub2228 He's Marty he can be up his own ass because he can back it up... Pun intended.
Joe: "Look! It's Cpt. Keyes."
Marty: "He has at least 12 polygons."
Each mainline Bungie Halo game was 3 years apart.
2001
2004
2007
2010
The Bungie Halo Era was 9 years but it felt longer. It was so impactful.
This is such a weirdly specific thing to have remade, but it came out really well.
Yeah I know. Lets just say I had a lot of free time a couple of months ago.
@@GamerNamedRyan if only the update fixing the graphics was out before lol
@Kinggizard093 S-118 Anniversary graphics look bad, the remaster here is just that the footage is being refilmed in something higher than 480p and higher than 30fps
How? This is history. It deserves this
Why are the cutscenes so much better than I remember them being in the MCC… they actually looks really good

Still wish Sgt Johnson was a Kenny character in the other Halos where he keeps dying and then coming back in the next level. Every time someone notices or asks it's classified
It was like one of those things I didn't even think about until Halo 2 went out of its way to point it out.
This actually has lore that would explain it! Sgt Johnson is immune to getting infected by the flood!
That would’ve been pretty brilliant. Man, now I’ll never be able to see Johnson again without thinking of this.

I think its really touching hearing Jason Jones talk about Halo CE during the credits. He is obviously emotional reliving the memories of that time.
Exactly. He spoke very less but this part was really touching.
It sucks he is a corporate asshole and was responsible for the firing of both Joe and Marty.
The Halo CE and Halo 2 commentaries are so funny. It’s basically the three of them making fun of their own work and I love it. The Reach one is really boring because it’s just them talking about how great what they made is.
Now that you mention it, that it is true.
And reach sucks too
I love it, but it sucks
@@Hazztech the true face of Heresy

That bungie opening made me feel so nostalgic.
Even on the disc I got for the HE legendary edition, it isn't nearly as crisp. Of course it isn't 4k though. Love this.
"Don't strap a bomb onto Chief's back, do it in the next game." "Cortana being evil was too stupid to do."
Basically halo 4 and 5 right there.
typical fanboy drivel - they "strapped" bombs themselves well before 4, and Cortana is not evil in the way they were describing.
@@xBINARYGODx So I can't say that these things were mentioned years ago? When did they strap Bombs to the chief in prior games, and Cortana taking over the galaxy is just as described
@@SirBigWater It's best to just ignore anyone who throws around "fanboy" in this day and age. Don't worry about Mr."BINARYGOD" over there.
@@tobsmonster2 Doesn't matter to me anyway. Whenever I voice something on these games people tend to get mad and say something. Especially on the Reddit, the amount of downvotes and insults I have are crazy. Community can't accept much these days anyways. Been playing the series since 2002, and so many of the people going against me who are calling me 343 fanboys and all that probably started way after me.
@@thefreeden Yes, did you read my comment? I wrote two quotes, and said they represent Halo 4 and Halo 5. Did not say that both games have both aspects. There was no bomb on Chief in Halo 5, but you didn't mention that?
I liked watching the commentary of them on a Halo CE speedrun
Yeah I saw that video it was pretty good
It's funny cause I only clicked on this video cause I watched the one you're referring to like 3 days ago
Marty they’re killing the marines!
till this very day I don't understand why the original marine aesthetic wasn't used throughout the original trilogy...it wasn't until reach where they got it right again. the later installments are fun, but there is something really special about halo ce. the mystery, atmosphere, friendly and enemy AI, voice acting, the first ring world...I replay it more than all the halos combined and I'm perfectly happy Bungie at least made one CE, it's so very special and amazing.
6:27 Jason's laugh is a little bit ominous in hindsight considering he's the only one on this still at Bungie
He’s just working for Microsoft now
"So tell us about X"
Jason: "I don't remember anything about X"
I actually used to the watch the original low quality version all the time when I was bored. The fact that you took the time to remaster this gem is awesome for others to watch. I know it’ll be allot of work but you should work on doing Halo 2 next!
I am currently working on "remastering halo 2"
Weird thing to note but keys is some how getting away with smoking inside a space ship thousand of years in the future but I cannot have a smoke in the bar today
Hmmmmmmmmm Yes
To be fair they didn't animate smoke. Maybe he just sucks on an empty pipe?
maybe they have better ventilation than todays. I would expect it, they are on a spaceship.
He's a God damn war hero and the CO of the entire ship you don't question the man when he blows smoke
Which attitude is more backward?
What a formula these guys had back in the day. You can tell not even they can believe the masterpiece they created
I'm not the worlds biggest Halo fan, but listening to these guys talk about this game just shows how much they loved their own product. Its really beautiful
These three Bungie devs: *Notice how glitching this scene coming up is, just makes my eyes bleed every time looking at it.*
Me, an intellectual: *.........WHERE??? I DON'T SEE IT.*
“First time ever, the party hats”
‘It looks like they’re getting mobbed by turkeys’
I lost it 😂
Really cool how everything is mostly synced up to the original video. It must've been really hard to mimic O'Donnells gameplay.
Dev commentary are one of the best things in the gaming industry.
The chemistry these guy share is a major part of why this game is so iconic
"This cave is not a natural formation" Careful Cortana, genius level deductions like that only further your rampancy
I am 60 years old, I'm a woman and x-military, I love the whole HALO story!
That is awesome :)
Hell yeah
Thank you for your service
Ok
Nice blog.
My favorite take away from this is that the made all the cut scenes the same way RVB did.
I love how both the second and third times they call out the warthog crash, they say they don't hear it and it must've been fixed. But if you listen VERY carefully, you can hear it crash both times, and they simply missed it.
Halo 1's Cinematics are still some of my favorite of all time. I swear, I rewatch them all, and Halo 2's at least once every 6 months, and have done so consistently for years and years and years.
Same here lol
The build-up to MC's first direct encounter with The Flood is perfect. It's one of those places where Halo: CE is a brilliant horror story (the chapter The Captain is another)
9:03
Joe: describing how archaic Halo CE cinematics are
Jason: Awesomeness
😂😂
You're gonna want to redo this soon - MCC is getting fixed!
im pretty sure this is the original version, but on a modded og xbox to upscale to 4k60. so its not the MCC/gearbox port
I used a Halo custom edition mod that restores a lot of broken thing from the gearbox port of Halo 1.
@@GamerNamedRyan Wow, this mod did such a great job restoring most of the look,
“Go! Go! Go! The corp ain’t payin us by the hour!!” Is one of my most quoted lines from anything. Anytime i need people moving quickly.
Huh, interesting to hear them directly reference the fact that humans = forerunners at 47:40
The 343i games could have been so much better if they didn't deviate from what was established.
@@flatarthur3161Except 343i didn’t change Forerunners as being a separate species, Halo 3 did.
@@jocastadidntknew5980 They were still human in Halo 3.
@@jocastadidntknew5980this regurgitated cope doesn't work. You're holding on to the few terminals Frankie wrote as a justification while ignoring that Contact Harvest, which was written by the lead writer and came out after Halo 3 explicitly says humans are forerunner.
So, even if your cope is true, which it isn't, it immediately got retconned by Contact Harvest. Stop repeating shit you read online and actually investigate. You're wrong
@@Gofawit’s even basically explicitly stated in the game that apparently retcons it. Guilty Spark literally says to chief “you are forerunner” and child of my maker or something like that.
I''m so glad they're in on the tale of Dustin Echoes
Perfect. Just perfect. Any future game developers watching this please makes games simple again.
Does anyone else ever think about the idea that the internet will still exist, hundreds of years from now, and people will be able to listen to the personal accounts of the creators of these games?
Jason really is way more critical than anyone. What else do you expect from a manager? Make a a world class masterpiece and they’re still going to nitpick every tiny detail they don’t personally like
This is probably why (Old) Bungie was so loved and respected not only did they make great games, but also showing how much love they put into their games by pointing out little bugs and bits of trivia but not to the point of self-deprecating.

Hope you're doing ok man
i wanna thank the old bungie team. marty o donnell jason jones, joseph staten. i know you guys split, and i know you may never see this but thank you for you guys and your team for making this legendary series. i was 11 years old when i played halo for the first time i played halo back in 2003 and fell in love with it. some of the greatest memories lies in this series. thank you
This is such a good insight into game design for beginners, and the Joe trivia is a fun bonus.Glad to see it remastered like it deserves. Game devs just don't have this kind of passion or chemistry anymore, soulless like the film industry
I’ve played CE countless times and I never knew about that after credits scene with Guilty Spark
Caught me off guard seeing the Bungie intro in 60fps lol. Thanks for this
ai is a very useful tool!
that cortana bit a 22:19 explains where 343 got their inspiration for halo 5’s story
Ironically Frank O Connor didn’t play Halo 1 when he made up the story of Halo 5
I dont know if this was put in the mcc but on the remastered graphics you can see combat forms near the begining of the level.
They were always there since the OG Xbox version
It’s super creepy once you notice it, and to make things worse, it marks them as friendlies on your radar
@Jack Snyder when you’re coming up on the structure, by where there’s the big fallen tree, on the cliffs you can see them watching you for a brief second before turning around and running away
I used to go to sleep to these commentary tracks when I was a kid and still cherish my Halo 3 Legendary Edition DVD. I found another rip on RUclips, but it has some unbearable audio issues - thank you for making these!!
I’m subbing, I held off on watching this for months until I beat the game on heroic, and then I found this!
EDIT: They said to call it designer commentary in the video
Yeah i know it's the name designer commentary doesn't sound as good.
This commentary is very important to me
And this video is now the definitive version on the internet
This is so great seeing these guys relive the creation of such a great part of my teenage years. This game was the envy and desire of everyone who didn’t have an xbox. And it was a huge party game with the system link and some of the first, really well done physics based gameplay. I don’t think in this age of modern games, ppl quite understand what halo meant to ppl back then. It was so unlike anything else and so much more advanced, epic, and social.
PING
A real gamer right there. Congrats!
The sound of the pelican flying around could be the last thing I ever heard and I wouldn't be mad.
I think it would've been pretty funny to have Johnson walk around that central pillar thing in the shortsword in a ferris bueller robe brushing his teeth and saying "Where ya been?" or something like that
52:52
Oh man I’m gonna cry. This is an awesome video.
Halo ce changed the world. Never forget that.
These are the guys who made a billion dollar franchise.
"And who kept shooting Cortana from the back?"
🤣
The Director of Culture, clearly. Lol
@@JustinTK416 Love that picture bud
It blows my mind when I think about how Halo was supposed to he a one off game with no EU and the Covenant war was just background information to justify shooting the enemies.
Halo was supposed to be a more interesting version of Quake or Doom before MS bought Bungie. All of the dialogue, detail, and world building in the actual game was never supposed to play into such an epic franchise.
This looks great! Well done recreating it shot for shot, I know this is a really niche thing not many people care about, but I love both the idea and effort! Thanks for making it!
I've thought of doing something very similar or the exact same thing, so it's wonderful to know I'm not alone in appreciating and wanting to use stuff from these classic videos and commentaries of Bungie.
I really love this video so much. It’s easy to look at a lot of games like they just kinda poofed into existence, or were manufactured on some factory line, but this makes it feel so personal.
5:59 *EARTH.*
RIP Dustin Echoes
You shot corona from the back because you knew who was going to be buying your game. The industry has largely forgotten that.
45:00 especially after such a chaotic level like Keyes, and for the conclusion to Halo 1, this cinematic is one of my favorites in the Halo series. And The Maw is one of my favorite tracks in the Halo Soundtracks saga.
Back when games were made by a rag tag group of cool, likeminded, artists, and engineers.
They literally talked about halo 5’s story 😂
Yeah it seems to be common for halo to scrap an idea and then use it later down the road.
So unless if their are mocking Halo 5 story they must have had the cortona taking over the universe idea in the original halo ce.
@@UltraEgoMc This was recorded in 2006, 2007ish. Just before Halo 3's release. So yeah Halo 5 didn't exist yet.
@@GamerNamedRyan The good ideas, yeah. This was clearly a bad/joke idea that they ditched in Halo 1 and obviously never pursued. 343 Industries with Halo 5 I think just generally have bad ideas and actually execute them - the opposite of Bungie lol.
@@brup123 They actually execute them, but badly, because it was fundamentally stupid to begin with. Much less to say; outright cliché and overdone to death. Scrapped ideas are scrapped ideas for a reason.
But anyway, 343i gotta 343i. There could be hundreds of signs with las vegas style highlights of stuff for them not to do, they'd do it anyway.
The Halo CE and 2 dev commentaries are as hilarious as they are interesting and informative as to what went into making the games. Always loved them.
Can I just say that the Bungie logo at the very beginning still looks as good as it did 22 years ago?
It gives me goosebumps man, completely different time.
I love how they agree Halo ce is the best Halo, it really is. Nothing beats Halo ce.
Yes 😁
Yeah it really is, best campaign and the weapons are all good. No plasma nerfs against flesh, shotgun rocks, magnum is a beaut. I've replayed CE the most.
Best campaign to replay as well. I can only replay Halo 3 and especially Halo 2 so many times until I get bored. CE on the other hand I still replay to this day barring the library. There is something about CE's sandbox that makes it the most fun in the series for me, plenty of tools to cause chaos and awesomeness.
I wholeheartedly agree with one of the last things said, "Halo 1 had a beautiful simplicity that does NOT exist anymore"
I miss the old Halo.. wish they wrote more books following the actual games.. (yes Ive read what's out there lol)
A lot more than 30 seconds of fun here. I have the legendary edition so I've watched these commentaries like 20 times but it never gets old. They have such a great dynamic. Very entertaining.
