    They literally laugh at a plot where cortana turns on master chief and decides to take control over the universe. The first thing that came to my mind was the plot of Halo 5 lmao

    • @Lucifronz
      @Lucifronz 4 года назад +122

      And it sucked, so you can tell it was the right call not to do that.
      Though a large part of why it sucked in Halo 5 was because you had grown to love Cortana and it was out of character, whereas in the first game you can get away with it since the player barely knows the character.

      @@Lucifronz It's not just that. _Anyone_ who's payed attention to Asimov could tell you: _STOP HAVING THE FRIENDLY ROBOTS AND COMPUTERS TURN EVIL._
      You can have them go rogue, but only as a malfunction, which is nothing an engineer with a spanner and a whole load of duct tape can't fix.
      Or a Spartan Laser. But honestly. We _did_ blow up someone's 100,000 year old home/solitary prison/purpose in life. And then blow up the replacement. _I don't think Halo had the ability to repair itself from that kind of explosion in Bungie's lore._ Guilty Spark wasn't evil. Just senile. Then he became incorporated.
      Mind you, wiping out all sentient life in the galaxy for the greater good _is_ pretty damn evil. Haven't they ever heard of a firebreak?

    • @Vonmoonlight
      @Vonmoonlight 3 года назад +8

      @@Lucifronz it wasn't that it was a bad idea of Cortana being evil. The execution and intro of it is bad.
      We are not even deep into the whole plot and we had just rmb how Corran sacrificed herself
      And she came back so soon with a full 180
      If it was more later that was revealed, like a cut scene of Locke listening to the comms of Chief going AWOL, then we are purely playing as Locke going thru.
      Then ltr on we learnt Cortana is alive, and chief is captured. Boom, leave at a cliffhangar

    It's somewhat sad to hear these three lead creatives on Halo jostling together happily here and how everything seemed to fall apart with the development of Destiny. Joe Staten left because of story disagreements with Jones reportedly and Marty O'Donnell was fired by both Bungie and Activision management for simply trying to assert some creative authority over the music, which ya know, as the composer isn't exactly surprising. At least they created one of the best FPS trilogies in Halo's 1-3 together.

    This is the kind of witty friendly banter that made the Halo games so great - just a bunch of friends who loved video games and happened to be very talented videogame developers.
    Compare the amount of chemistry between them and love for the game in this commentary with the one for Halo Reach - hugely contrasting. Shows how the passion and chemistry began to die at that point, and thus the last truly legendary Halo games were Halo 1-3.

      Back then, it wasn't really about story, either. they had no story to ground themselves with, hell, the legendary ending with Johnson touching an aliens butt before they died was proof that they really had no other plans for this game while making it, and were able to make it far more light hearted and have fun with it. but after ten years of building a massive story, backstory, lore, and universe behind it, they've really grounded themselves in a set of stories they were sort of forced to tell, and i can imagine the sandbox ideology was lost

    Fun fact, At the Flood level, if you pushed a Shadow turret towards the entrance that plays at 28:50 and you played the level up to that moment, the turret would stay there because the designers forgot to set up a map cleaner on that part. If well placed, Jenkins would be stuck on the turret and mess up the cutscene.

      Ryan Apperson That was best done in two players where one drives the banshee full speed towards the gate while the other opened the gate. If well done, the character would die in the cutscene and shortly later, the game would skip said cutscene because of it's death...
      That or the cutscene would play without the chief.

      I myself find it a good plot line, it's a matter of how well the execution is
      Greatest example of a plot line but difference in execution in Halo 2 would be, if Bungie had done all the same thing minus the PoV as Arbiter of everything that happens in the covenant side..
      And we only stuck at Human PoV, it would've been way less impact for the story. Feels so out of the left field where suddenly there a civil war cux Prophets just wanted Brutes instead Cuz the Elites are now questioning too much on the decisions made.
      Halo 5 with Cortana would've alot better if we don't know abt Chief side of the story, or if the original wiriting wasnt retconned.. Rmb the old trailer where the buildings were all collapsing and Chief was running thru? That was a sign of retcon somewhere Cuz that nvr happened in the game and I bet you Microsoft Game Studios interfered with it, same goes for Cortana "death" in Halo 4. It would've made the AWOL plot alot better and intense and Locke just don't feel the same as Nightfall Locke

    Folks in the comments acting like it’s a revelation that Bungie toyed with the idea of having Cortana turn baddy before 343. They’ve always toyed with it - folks who were around for the Halo 2 post-credit stinger and the promotional “this is the way the world ends” Halo 3 cryptic bullshit already know this - the idea of “Rampancy”, etc. It’s a plot point that’s always floated around but they never had the confidence to pull the trigger on it because MC and Cortana are such beloved characters. 343 had desperation instead of confidence.

    These guys were really passionate about their game. It shows in Halo 1-3. Signing with Microsoft was great $ wise but after CE they couldn't make games how they use to. Not only the immense fan expectations, but obviously publisher (Microsoft) also has their injections into the game. After Halo 3 the fight was finished but they were required to make 2 more Halo games for the Xbox. ODST was an enjoyable reskin and Reach was Destiny Jr. That's where their focus was (Destiny) buy this was ultimately the beginning of the end.. as they decided to sign with Activision to publish Destiny after the split from MS. I could only imagine what the men in these videos were planning for. I imagine their vision and Activision's didn't line up.. as Joseph Staten and Marty were both gone by the release. Sad. It's cool Joseph Staten is back to work on Halo though. Sorry for the paragraph, been on a behind-the-scenes binge of of old Bungie because I loved Halo when I was a child/teen lol.
