By the way I have to say that as far as these cinematics/cutscenes go, Halo 2 is by FAR the best Halo.....truly Joseph Staten and his team did great job with it and the story as well! And I mean they did really great job at keeping Arbiter as second playable character completely secret...I remember that some people complained bout Arby's side of the story/game as well, but It think it was absolutely brilliant addition to the game and I was actually really disappointed that they basicly made Arby just an sidekick in Halo 3....one of the things I was expecting from Halo 3 was that it would continue the way Halo 2 did and eventually bring Master Chief and Arbiter together, so I was disappointed when I learned that wasnt the case. I dont know what Staten would have thought about using CGI-cutscenes like they are doing with Halo 2 Anniversary, but perhaps he would have been excited about that possibility?...if it had been possible at that time ;D Ofcourse there is always the thing that the CGI-cutscenes versus ingame-graphics make it feel bit strange experience, but personally I cant wait to see all these great cutscenes in great quality CGI! And one more things...I really HATED it when they changed Truth's voice in Halo 3 =(....I really liked his voice in Halo 2, why they had to change it???
I thought that Incubus track fitted very well, the whole mission felt so different.. Different character, allies, foes, environment, a new and awesome banshee when the music kicks in..
i noticed nearly everything in this game. im the kind of player that takes a good hour looking at the graphics stuff like that while my friends are beggung me to get a move on and continue playing instead of looking at a wall
iPlayiOS same i've been playing halo since i was 4 years old xD 2004 Halo CE and Halo 2 then halo 3, odst and my last halo reach. I tried giving 4 a shot I will admit it's story was good but gameplay wasn't good. 5 I don't want to talk about it. Now I just play destiny and other games. But i still play MCC reguardless of the bugs it's still fun to play especially with friends.
Someone should just go through and make a very realistic Halo game where you do all of Halo CE like it was in the book. Playing the Chief and marines. Then make Halo 2 the way the devs wanted it. I do have to mention, these guys had fun making this. They told the story not to sell you the game but to laugh with you and talk to you about what could have been and what almost wasn't. Today game companies just make videos like this to sell you the game and hint all this stuff and show off their studio and them working on the game. I just want to go back to this time and enjoy the gaming industry when it still had heart.
@@meowsandstuff Are you now? Get in touch with me ---> billy16802Gmail.com I have the same ambitions but with Halo 2 only. I also have someone who is trying to get a copy of the Halo 2 2003 E3 Demo, no bullshit, I'm doing my best.
Back then companies like Id Software, Deep Silver Volition, Rare, Free Radical Design and Bungie truly felt like a "made for gamers by gamers" thing. Just a bunch of nerds creating video games!
I think its sad that from these guys only Jason Jones is with Bungie anymore =(...Marty got fired and Joseph Staten now works with Microsoft Studios, not sure what he is doing there exactly, but yeah...only very few of the familiar Bungie faces/voices are there anymore...Frank O'Connor also stayed with 343, so all these familiar faces from Bungie arent there anymore =( Really miss the good old days of the original Halo trilogy, but atleast Halo goes on and Halo 2 gets its very deserved Anniversary treatment....just a shame that I cant afford on Xbox One right now =(
Some of the best cinematic storytelling ever. I was 6 years old when I played through Halo 1 & 2, and I remember being so excited to come home after school and play through this amazing game.
For Spark's issue of his light dimming when he talks... I just thought it was because he was on such a tight power budget that he had to divert power from his light to allow him to speak. Like... Floating, running powerful shields, moving about, processing information, running an AI, and also being able to process the social dynamic of conversation... I just thought that he was so focused on what was going on that he had to budget his energy to let himself speak.
These guys dont give their players much credit. Thinking we just run and gun all the time and miss everything. I saw all of these little things, apart from the "sentry factory" getting destoryed.. too busy looking at the cool elites and the drop pods... If you can spend hours trying to get through a mission without any elites dying, you can wait a few seconds to see a scene!
It honestly amazes me how much of this game they thought no one would ever notice, but are actually a huge part of my childhood and why I loved the game so much
I honestly wanna cry for what a great game you guys had developed, I loved this game as a kid seeing what is possible in a game like Halo 2 made me fall in love with the halo series, and now seeing you guys together after a long time after developing the game made me feel like I could connect even more with the game it's self and the people whom made it.
I always loved playing through H2 I spent countless hours on this campaign and watching this again just makes me appreciate it so much more then I already did, these guys really LOVED what they created 😭
I remember back when Halo 2 first came out and people complained about everything, especially the half assed campaign with the cliffhanger ending. Now it is praised as a god.
Isaac King To be fair, the first Halo I played was #2. I didn't play CE until after Halo 3. It was good, but I preferred H2's MP and campaign over CE's by far
It wasn't just the cliff hanger, Halo 1 and 2 were the only games for the original Xbox, then came out xbox 360 and people had to afford 500$ of console to play Halo 3 at that time.
I really want them to make the Halo 3 developer commentary sooooo badlyyyyy. Watching these always brings up some many emotions and I pray every time when coming back to rewatch the commentaries that the third one is finally released.
Looking back at this, I remember finishing co-op with my dad. I distinctly remember being mad about the ending since I assumed there would be one last level.
You Guys expanded the universe of Halo with that different point of view while playing as the arbiter. it felt more alive, more organic. it wasnt just shooting the bad guys and all is just black and white. That was a creative way of storry telling that i am really thankfull for. Sry for my bad english. Greetings from Germany :D
13:33 Favorite scene in Halo 2. Recon suggests going around since the area is hot, Johnson ignores their advice saying, “we’re going in”, then everyone literally immediately dies.
They did a fantastic job. The arbiter is one of my favorite characters in any game. And at his introduction he was one of the bad guys who was just a nameless enemy.
The amount of things they focused on and showed that I never noticed in my hundreds of playthroughs, what on earth were they on when they made Halo 2? perfection

Them reacting to the halo CE speed run was awesome and filled with so much information we didn’t know before. I seriously hope they do it for the other halos as well

@@moonstruckstarlet6607 It's a warrior's line. Chief is a soldier. "Sir, finishing this fight." fit way better, and the marketing guys must've been over the _moon._
Its better now, you just have to pay the price of the game again plus a bit more. But the pvp is still COD with slightly more HP and slightly more bullshit. And the enemies are still bullet sponges. And there is very little story.
2021, Halo Infinite is about to come out, a 343 Industries project, and I'm here, watching the OG's talking about Halo 2 wayyyy back in the day. Man, how things have changed, in Halo, and in the games industry in general. I miss Halo 2.
This is really great , I am sad that we will never see levels like Covenant Ship or Forerunner Tank however I am also glad that things like a "level with only hunter" or "Miranda making a pact with the prophets (this is just plain stupid)" never made it to the final game.
i still watch that scene even in 2019 lol i just recently played MCC and every single time i play halo 2, from the original to now, i watch the ship blow up from the inside lol i literally always stop walking to see the ship blow up i love that scene so much, and the ships fleeing right before it blows
Just wanna say the covenant ship level being cut for the space pickle cutscene worked out so well. Yeah its probably some nostalgia, but that is my favorite cutscene in all of halo, and burned into my memory. It was so awesome!
The cutscenes in this version of the game look *WAY* better than what shipped. Those improvements Joe Staten mentioned in the beginning aren't just reduced texture pop in or added depth of field, it looks like it's using stencil lighting. For those that don't know, Halo 2 was originally going to have a cutting edge lighting engine using stencil lighting techniques, which are basically really good looking dynamic shadows that calculate a "stencil" based on the position and angle of the light and the models in front of that light. Doom 3 was the first game to ever implement such a system, so imagine if Halo 2 had lighting that looked as good as that game. Problem was, the Xbox just could not handle the calculations necessary at all, and while they were able to get the E3 2002 demo working on that engine, it just wasn't going to work for a whole game. The engine ended up getting scrapped and that led to the major crunch of Halo 2s development. Anyway, if you look up a video of the old cutscenes from the original Xbox version, the lighting doesn't look anywhere near as good as it looks here. It's especially notable during the cutscene between delta halo and regret, where Miranda is looking at the index and the library and whatnot. Jason Jones did mention that he saw him in after affects so perhaps this was an early version of the cutscene that still used the stencil engine they just edited in to the video. But it make me wonder if there is a hidden build of Halo 2 that is playable from start to finish with features of the stencil engine added into it.
So many games come and go over the years and are totally forgettable. The Halo games are rare specimens that have left an indelible impact on history. Like the Mona Lisa, these works will be remembered for all time.
They missed a big opportunity for Halo 2 Anniversary. They should have gone back and looked at Bungie's old plans and assets and implement all the ideas and levels which they did not have time to finish. Particularly the lost/unfinished levels would have been amazing - particularly as it apparently tells the story better and extends the campaign. I imagine it was too much work for 343 and they settled for just revamping graphics.
+SB 90s They were already busy making halo 5 at the time, and were already shoving a grand total of 4 games into one disc at launch, along with trying to get halo 2's troublesome engine running at 60fps. Asking them to make old levels requires them to build a bunch of new levels with the old engine which would just not be feasible for the company. Although I would like to see a standalone halo 2 uncut edition, perhaps remastered in an all new engine with nothing cut in the future. Wouldn't even care if they went the CEA route with it and only made it a campaign disc with a map pack for whichever halo is the current at the time.
Jordan Alvarez keep in mind the original plan was to only develop Halo 2 Anniversary only but some idiot thought it would be cool to shove all four main games + Halo 5 beta + Halo Nightfall + Halo Channel all in one Disc

It was included with the bonus materials in the Legendary Edition of Halo 3.
Oh my god I didn't know THAT was the burning wreckage that you entered. A sentinal factory you see fall. God this game is amazing. Thank you guys so much for all the great times.
no halo 3 developer commentary playthrough?
+killer spark117 Halo 3 Developer Commentary does not exist unfortunately.
i wish it did...
+SimKitt Damn... Well thanks for uploading these! I never did watch these. Glad I did now.
+SimKitt What's the song at 1:01:115?
+MrSnoCone I mean 1:01:15
+Julien Santilli Yeah Im the same, especially when the Athens blows up in the first mission.
I'd be one of those friends that would ask where it is and look for it lmao

Almost 10 years later, I'm still listening. :)
iPlayiOS same i've been playing halo since i was 4 years old xD 2004 Halo CE and Halo 2 then halo 3, odst and my last halo reach. I tried giving 4 a shot I will admit it's story was good but gameplay wasn't good. 5 I don't want to talk about it. Now I just play destiny and other games. But i still play MCC reguardless of the bugs it's still fun to play especially with friends.
... Still listening ;)
You know what's funny, 343 did put a bomb on the Chief's back in Halo 4! Ha!
OMG they did
anthony199757 OMG so right DAE see the bomb? wOW!
When was that?
clayman518
The last level...he placed a nuclear warhead to his back.
Thor Odinson I thought he just had a detonator for blowing up the composer.
I loled hardly at the Covenant "pickle" part xDDD
+carjasssso2 43:01 This *exchange* of hats
Someone should just go through and make a very realistic Halo game where you do all of Halo CE like it was in the book. Playing the Chief and marines. Then make Halo 2 the way the devs wanted it.
I do have to mention, these guys had fun making this. They told the story not to sell you the game but to laugh with you and talk to you about what could have been and what almost wasn't. Today game companies just make videos like this to sell you the game and hint all this stuff and show off their studio and them working on the game. I just want to go back to this time and enjoy the gaming industry when it still had heart.
I'm thinking of doing something like this soon.
@@aeronautisch Man my inititial comment is 4 years old haha. Bold move commenting on this despite its age.
23:23 I love how he was just gushing over the game with "yeah" and then realized what he said and was like "WAIT WHAT NO!"
Shits hilarious lmao
yeah i replayed that a few times. made me laugh so hard lol
Lmao.
It's like when Spongebob is pouring over the Krusty Krab Pizza
Still my Favorite „Go to sleep“ Video. This and the halo CE dev commentary
I think its sad that from these guys only Jason Jones is with Bungie anymore =(...Marty got fired and Joseph Staten now works with Microsoft Studios, not sure what he is doing there exactly, but yeah...only very few of the familiar Bungie faces/voices are there anymore...Frank O'Connor also stayed with 343, so all these familiar faces from Bungie arent there anymore =(
Really miss the good old days of the original Halo trilogy, but atleast Halo goes on and Halo 2 gets its very deserved Anniversary treatment....just a shame that I cant afford on Xbox One right now =(
And unfortunately 343 Industries is not the developer Bungie was back in the day... At least they released MCC though.
Dagger 323 Yeah they released it. Completely unfinished..
Luke Jacobson 343 never fails to disappoint, just when you think they can't possibly screw up any worse.
***** we know...
Dagger 323 Than stop crying about it.
Marty and Joe are both gone now for Destiny. Maketh me want to cry
Marty isn't working on Destiny. He was fired. Joe is leaving Bungie in September.
JHenry thats what he meant about marty and joe left last year and is working on halo live action stuff i believe
expesialy now 343 is doing halo now (which is worse than bungie)
Joe is back at Microsoft
Isaac King *especially
Sorry, just had to.
I really love halo 2, thank you Bungie for making some of the best games i have ever played.
I watch this developer commentary about once a year, never gets old.
this is what has inspired me to become a games developer as I share the same passion as these great people
14:53 LOL thats where we got detachable turrets
It honestly amazes me how much of this game they thought no one would ever notice, but are actually a huge part of my childhood and why I loved the game so much
The amount of creative genius that is in this recording room right now is unbelievable
It's so funny hearing them rip certain scenes to shreds while I literally have goosebumps from the nostalgia and how legendary it actually was lmao
When I first played The Arbiter, I shot everything in sight.
Spritz my same reaction
36:25 foreshadowing to Halo 3: ODST!
Because those people were idiots. Halo 2 is by far the best Halo game to date
RZIBARA i say halo 1 but halo 2 is my second favorite
Isaac King To be fair, the first Halo I played was #2. I didn't play CE until after Halo 3. It was good, but I preferred H2's MP and campaign over CE's by far
It wasn't just the cliff hanger, Halo 1 and 2 were the only games for the original Xbox, then came out xbox 360 and people had to afford 500$ of console to play Halo 3 at that time.
***** Still expensive.
I really want them to make the Halo 3 developer commentary sooooo badlyyyyy. Watching these always brings up some many emotions and I pray every time when coming back to rewatch the commentaries that the third one is finally released.
The good chemistry between team members and fun working enviroment can be felt in the product.
Now look this feeling on halo 5 ... its not there.
I love how multiple suggestions they made ultimately appeared in Halo 3 and ODST.
This will always be my favorite halo. Storytelling got to a whole new level in this one
Always will be my favorite too the Campaign & Multiplayer Everything I still go back to the game.
Looking back at this, I remember finishing co-op with my dad. I distinctly remember being mad about the ending since I assumed there would be one last level.
It honestly just feels like some bros sitting down and playing a game together. I love that about Bungie. They just feel like AMAZING friends.
I love the irreverence that can only be had for something so incredible by the people who toiled endlessly on it.
I wish it were more common for game devs to do these commentary playthroughs. I could watch these for hours. Very insightful and entertaining.
13:33 Favorite scene in Halo 2. Recon suggests going around since the area is hot, Johnson ignores their advice saying, “we’re going in”, then everyone literally immediately dies.
I wish there were more commentaries like this. It's fascinating to see the decisions and compromises that are made in game design.
They did a fantastic job. The arbiter is one of my favorite characters in any game. And at his introduction he was one of the bad guys who was just a nameless enemy.
The amount of things they focused on and showed that I never noticed in my hundreds of playthroughs, what on earth were they on when they made Halo 2? perfection
every time they said "something no body saw" i saw all of them!
I saw all of them too except the giant Assault Carrier, which of course I missed XD
Just watched the Halo commentary from IGN and now this. Started when I was 4 years old and it’s still my favorite story in all of gaming. I love your passions and sincerely thank you for what you do
Them reacting to the halo CE speed run was awesome and filled with so much information we didn’t know before. I seriously hope they do it for the other halos as well
can't believe they fired marty :(
They are evil
That's the problem with big $ and corporations
I wish these were longer. such a legendary game
It'll probably never happen, but a Halo 2 Director's Cut release (or Developer or whatever you want to call it) would be absolutely amazing!
Loved this. And them skipping commentary over Sniper Alley...brilliant 😂.
I think what happened was the code for the single kill shit for the Hunters was removed and found it's way in the control of the Sniper Jackals
1:01:08 Man, they could have worked the "Only Blood will pay for this!" line back in here.
you're damn right; maybe another time
I feel it is not fitting at all, especially not coming from the chief. Way too grimdark and melodramatic.
@@moonstruckstarlet6607 It's a warrior's line.
Chief is a soldier.
"Sir, finishing this fight." fit way better, and the marketing guys must've been over the _moon._
Halo 2 was and will forever be my favorite Halo game. Thanks for making the hours of my boring childhood great!
I wanna hear the devs thoughts on Destiny, see how disappointed they are
I don't play it but apparently it's not that bad now. I've read stuff saying the new expansion is what people had hoped for in the first place.
it was never " bad ". Just good, Its much better now.
Its better now, you just have to pay the price of the game again plus a bit more. But the pvp is still COD with slightly more HP and slightly more bullshit. And the enemies are still bullet sponges. And there is very little story.
Nah cuz I don't think any of the people in this commentary were even working at Bungie by the time Destiny was released.
Halo nerds- In-depth analysis of the significance of the somber piece at the beginning of Uprising
Marty O'Donnell- "Thank you. Halo-y"
when I first played halo 2 I saw those stations blow up and the cruiser going to earth
i still watch that scene even in 2019 lol i just recently played MCC and every single time i play halo 2, from the original to now, i watch the ship blow up from the inside lol i literally always stop walking to see the ship blow up i love that scene so much, and the ships fleeing right before it blows
20:00 I won't lie, the pilot's and Keyes' lines are delivered terribly here, in my opinion. It's stood out to me as long as I've been a Halo fan.
Every halo fan should watch this and the first one.
2 years later but good taste in games and music
Just wanna say the covenant ship level being cut for the space pickle cutscene worked out so well. Yeah its probably some nostalgia, but that is my favorite cutscene in all of halo, and burned into my memory. It was so awesome!
i really wish we could get another proper halo game. i miss this line up terribly.
+SB 90s They were making Halo 5 at the time so 3 studios made Halo 2A: Blur, 343 and another one.
+SB 90s Can you imagine how many people would be pissed if 343 touched Halo 2. People freak out when 343 do anything even in their own games.
SB 90s. They intended all along to make it exactly like the original version. Which is fine by me, the game is a classic, why change it.
Jordan Alvarez keep in mind the original plan was to only develop Halo 2 Anniversary only but some idiot thought it would be cool to shove all four main games + Halo 5 beta + Halo Nightfall + Halo Channel all in one Disc
These guys are so funny and clearly really good friends. The roasting is hilarious
I love how the Bungie devs used to voice crack so much
