This is a huge benefit. I've always done well as my own agent. I make fulltime art and commissions and love doing community gigs also. Making a fulltime income.. But recently I was contacted by United Airlines and I had 4 days to learn how a high profile fine art commission worked. I feel I could have let an agent benefit us both a little better!
Thanks for this informative video. I have been out of the art world for a couple of years and recently I had an art agent contacted me from a show of 5 years ago and now saw some work she likes and wanted to negotiate and develop. She seemed genuine at first but very indecive on our appointment time and only then cancelled a few minutes before! My question is : Would it be ok to say NO to a flaky/ unreliable art agent so matter how good the agent is? And do these art agents have testimonials from artist they represent? And just how do one to select or choose if there any other choices let alone find one? Is there a there a top 100 best art agent list? that is aside to might discover on via other similar artists sights? :)
Great questions! I am sorry she flakes on you, but at least you know her true colors now. First decide where you want your career to go, then if you need an agent at all and what kind. That will steer you in the right direction. Expect professionalism and don’t let anyone treat you poorly. When I work with artists directing their careers (not as an agent but more of a coach or consultant) I often find artists lack clarity on where they want to go and accept low level abuse from gallery owners and others. Let me know if you have any other questions and be sure to subscribe as I will be making more content about this subject in the near future!
