Depends on the body. On an A7 body with 24 MP, it is decent. Using it on a 7R body as emergency lens if there is no light is kind of a big compromise. However, there is something about this lens I really like, even though it is for sure not its focusing noise. On the whole, I would say this lens and Samyang's 50/1.4 Mk II share the same spot. The Samyang is very weak wide open and at close focusing while having the better AF, with the Sony it is vice versa.
Would a faster camera like the a7cii I just bought be faster at focusing or is speed independent of camera? Which 50mm would be better at focusing at the same focal length
to be honest, the fe50 1.8 is faster on A7IV than the fe55 1.8 on A7III. it's so wired, and I don't know why. even the noise is better, it's pretty much the same thing with the old ef mount sigma lens......
I’m a new beginner & I have a Sony NEX 7 with a 18-55mm Kit lens & I wanted to know how much better would the video quality be compared to my NEX 7 Kit lens?
If you're a beginner, get the most affordable lens you can and learn how to use it the best you can. . A 50mm is pretty "tight", but a 70mm would almost be too tight to be your only lens (in my opinion)
So as long as the subject doesn't move drastically, af noise won't be noticeable? I'm thinking of getting this for interviews and wondering if the noise could be the problem.
Thanks! I have one question left. About filter. This lens has moving part that moves apart from filter mount. Sooo i can pick up any filter on the market? Or should i look for a specific one?
Minolta, the mother of Sony lenses, had quite a # of lenses w/ 49mm filter threads. The 40.5 mm was no stranger, it's around for over 50 yrs on the M-mount Rokkor & Leitz lenses for the CL & later Minolta CLE.
If you're using autofocus, I would NOT use this lens for green screen work. The autofocus really hunts bad on this lens, and for greenscreen work you need a really crisp and clear image to get a proper key. If you have to have a 50mm, I'd invest in better glass like the 50mm 1.4

Hi Keith, I know this comment is off topic to your video. However, I know you are reliable and go through the comments under your videos: I have a problem with my DJI MINI 2. I always have image noise at ISO of 100 no matter if photos or videos. I don't use ND filters because my pocket money is not enough right now. So most of the time for nice shots I rather fly in the morning or evening to shoot at 4k 30fps with a shutter of 1/60. But I don't understand why videos from you or other professionals using a DJI MINI 2 are free from this annoying noise. love ur vids keep up the good work Kind regards.
Hey there, no worries! Are you using manual settings for video? I know using the auto settings/auto ev or auto iso will definitely increase the noise in the image. Even when it’s bright out. The manual settings will give yo better results. Are you using any color profiles or the normal? Also, if you’re cranking the shutter speed to get the proper exposure, that will negatively effect your image quality with video as well. Hope that helps, tim!
@@keith-knittel Hello again, I have tried everything you suggested. Almost everything I had already set before. Only the white balance, which I think has nothing to do with the noise and the flicker adjustment I have now set from Automatic to 50hz. What is your shutter speed? When shooting photos, you can crank the shutter speed to freeze action better. For video, you might have to use a gimbal to smooth out the motion
The 50mm 1.8 along with the crop sensor on the A6000 makes this about a 75mm focal length. Definetly use a quicker shutter speed when shooting hand held, things get shakier the longer the focal length.
Hi @Keith! I have an A6000 but with no lens. I'm planning to buy this one for my trip to Japan. I will mostly shoot cities, streets and landscape. Do you think it's ok to start with a prime lens or I should start with the basic one like the Sony E PZ 16-50mm (I don't like photo quality of it ) Thanks mate :)
If you're already going down the image quality rabbit hole, I'd check out some primes. This 50mm 1.8 is sharp and affordable (and full frame), but the autofocus is really bad on moving subjects. I agree! I used to pass on 50mm since I usually shoot with 35mm or 85-90mm but have been picking up my 50mm more and more lately after giving it another try! The 1.8 is a great budget option if you can live with the strengths and weaknesses of this lens.
