Thanks very much for all your insights into the Aero Clock assembly and function. It is the type project that I definitely consider. I love all types of clocks, the more unique and unusual the better.
Mine runs 25 hours, but not with the supplied sandbag, its just too long. I found a Lead Weight mantled with brass by Ebay which is only 4 Inches long. The mounting holes at the wall are 1,8 m high (as recommended). I also had to make that Gap as shown in the review. I used Vaseline to lubricate all the parts and gears with a small paint brush, thats much easier as a candle, and you can lubricate the gear tooths completely . (You may have that for avoiding friction for your best friend in your bedroom :-). My clock runs smooth with only 1400 grams of that Lead weight! that should prevent gear wear, if you need 2 kg you have to reduce friction!

I had problems at first but now mine runs very good. The balloon rises and falls smooth and quiet. The clock keeps decent time too. It isn't a easy one to build and get working right.
I also built this one, but you can throw it away after 1.5 years because the gears wear out and the weight of 2 kilos is no longer held when you pull it up
Too right, FRICTION is your enemy. First time I built this it wouldn't run, despite sanding and using the candle wax where directed. I dismantled it and decided to use graphite powder instead on all axles, cogs and any surfaces that are in sliding contact. Yes it's a bit messy, you have to be careful where you put it as it stains the wood, I used a small paint brush to apply it, but it's a far better lubricant that the candle wax. It's running now, but the ticking of the escape wheel isn't consistent yet, but I appreciate that there is some running in period whilst everything beds in, especially where the teeth on the pendulum slide on the escape wheel. Just pleased it's now running without stopping. I've got around 2.2 Kg in the bag at the moment, I hope to be able to reduce that (so the loads on the clock frame are reduced) in the future when it's running consistently.

Der Leinenbeutel ist zu gross und setzt auf Grund der Länge zu zeitig auf den Boden auf; das kostet ein bis drei Stunden Laufzeit. Ein Bleigewicht von nur sechs Zentimeter Höhe ist günstiger und nimmt nicht so viel Platz in Anspruch. Die Seilkabine ist zu leicht und hält damit die Seilschlaufe des Aufzugsseiles nicht glatt. Habe etwas Gewicht (Blei in der Grösse des Kabinenbodens, 2 mm dick) in die Kabine eingebracht.
Instead of graphite powder, use a pencil instead. Also sand smooth the teeth of the gears, and polish with a piece 0f metal, the steel handle of a needle file will be ideal for this.
Thank you for the review and tips! I’m slowly troubleshooting mine and I did take the piece off the pendulum to get it to swing more. I tried graphite powder on the escapement wheel too but it was too messy. I will also try to loosen the other connection you first mentioned. I have too much friction and mine will only run for a few minutes straight at most. I can’t wait to dial it in. For the WD-40, was that really helpful? I’m afraid it will just soak into the wood. I,ve done a few of these models and from my point of view, if every single moving part is sanded down really smooth, including all the gear teeth, you shouldn't need graphite or anything else and i certainly wouldn't use WD40 or cooking oil i've seen suggested. The trick to these, is take your time, make sure everything fits correctly and moves freely before you continue, it's worth it! One thing i didn't use in the weight sack, is sand. When you buy it, it's often slighly damp, so when it dries out, the weight changes, so i used that small gravel you use in aquariums, very cheap and you can add what you need to get the weight correct and it dosn't dry out. A few have asked if you can paint these. You could, but i wouldn't paint and moving parts, it will alter tolerances and cause drag or friction on the part. Good luck guys, hope this helps 😉
I had to remove the same piece you removed near the pendulum as well as 2 other pieces otherwise the friction will stop the escape wheel. I found soap to be more effective that wax for lubricating the escape wheel.
I'm definitely interested in buying one, but since the tolerances seem so tight I wonder if the wood will warp if it's in an above average humid environment like in a kitchen that frequently has boiling water, in a room with a tropical fish tank, or a home that doesn't have or rarely uses air conditioning.
Mine has definitely become more finicky over time and I do suspect it's due to warping. Still, it's a lot of fun to build and is definitely cool when it's running.

I hope I understood how the string has to be wound. I was a bit confused by the drawing in that area. With so many parts and possibilities for friction, etc., my biggest fear is that I will get it assembled and it won’t rum, leaving me to struggle to find the problem(s). Wish me luck!
Oh that will definitely happen :) Troubleshooting is half the fun. That's how I learned how the actual mechanism works. When I first assembled it nothing happened at all.
Hallo Spat, habe diese Uhr auch zu Weihnachten erhalten und zusammen gebaut. Dabei braucht es Geduld und Ruhe. Meine Uhr lief auf Anhieb, sogar die Zeit hielt dieses Gerät erstaunlich genau. Wichtig ist alle Teile sorgfältig zu entgraten, besonders die kleinen Stege, welche die gelaserten Teile in der Sperrholzplatte halten. Danach so wie in der Beschreibung angegeben mit Wachs versehen. Ich habe ein Teelicht angezündet und mit einem Hölzchen das flüssige Wachs auf die zu wachsenden Teile (Zahnräder, Ankerrad, Buchsen und Laufringe, welche in den Buchsen sitzen) geträufelt. Anschliessend habe ich das Wachs über der Flamme des Teelichtes erwärmt und in das Holz einziehen lassen. Mit eine weichen rotierenden Bürste lassen sich die Holzteile anschliessend Polieren, so dass die Reibung auf ein Mindestmass verringert wird. Das Prinzip des Ballonaufzuges hatte mir auch etwas überlegen abgefordert, aber mittels der mitgelieferten "Line" funktioniert es ausgezeichnet. Auf Grund der Leichtgängigkeit dieses Seilzuges war es bei meiner Uhr erforderlich das Gegengewicht zu vergrössern, da der Ballon zu schnell nach unten lief. Das Gewicht für das Uhrwerk habe ich zur Zeit auf 770 Gramm reduziert. Dadurch wird die Holzsteckkonstruktion nicht zu sehr belastet und verzieht sich nicht durch das Gewicht. Ich habe ein Bleigewicht genutzt, weil die Abmessungen geringer sind und auf diese Weise das Gewicht länger benötigt, bevor es auf dem Boden ankommt. Erzielbare Laufzeit der Uhr cirka 24 Stunden. Die Scheiben auf dem Pendel habe ich in die jeweils fünfte Raste von Aussen auf dem Pendel geschoben und es schien eine gute Einstellung zu sein. Die Seilbahngondel in der Schlaufe des Aufzugseiles ist zu leicht und wurde noch mit etwas Gewicht beschwert, um das Seil glatt zu halten. Die Funktion des "Hemmunghebels" habe ich nicht erkannt; möglich wäre eine Freigabe des Seilrades vom Ballonaufzug, dazu wäre eventuell eine Vegrösserung des Langloches der Achse des Seilrades erforderlich. . Viel Spass beim Aufbau dieser Uhr.

I've definitely seen other reviewers stain some pieces, looks great. As far as painting goes I'm not sure but wouldn't recommend it. Paint has thickness and can introduce more friction. This thing is quite sensitive in that regard.

Take off the weight. Pull the left string (the one with the basket on it) down as far as it will go. That raises the hook that the weight attaches to. Put the weight back on. Manually turn the hour and minute faces to the right time. Done.
Es reicht aber auch, das Gewicht in dem gleichen Mass anzuheben, wie an dem Aufzugsseil gezogen wird. Und nicht so ein schweres Gewicht, das ist kein Kran. Habe derzeit 770 Gramm angehängt. 😏
@VladGutkovsky you don’t have to take off the whole weight every time. You can just lift up on the weight while pulling down on the carriage and it will be wound. That way you don’t have to reset time every winding

Weights are always a worry with this kinda stuff, so it's good to see it's easy to fix!
It is very essential to the proper operation of the balloon that the lines aren’t twisted inside of the scaffold-like structure.

I built one ,the next one I build I'm going use a # 2 pencil . Interesting model . I love these wooden models

I am exactly in the same situation than you (first model +fricion is ennemy) but I started with there hardest model: the UGM 11 truck😅

You have to hang it high on the wall to get it to run over 24 hours
It would depend on how much the sand bag can travel. I'd imagine, in theory, if you had it mounted on a tall enough wall, it could run for weeks.

Teflon spray should work better than graphite and without staining.
