Tesla Model 3 Review - 2 Years Later

  • After two years with my Tesla Model 3, this is my long term review. Covering the total running costs, performance, faults, pros and cons of driving an electric car since November 2019. Would I still recommend buying a Tesla Model 3 and what am I replacing it with?
    If you're thinking of buying or owning a Tesla (or any electric car), hopefully this helps answer those questions from a long term ownership point of view.

      @@braaitongs It's a yearly tax that all vehicle owners pay and can range from zero to several hundred pounds depending on the CO2 emissions. I know, it's a joke but it's a way of supposedly paying towards the fantastic roads we have and also a way of getting us to buy into the electric car BS before making us all pay per mile ( actually pay per km, that way it can be increased without people noticing as much).

    Got my M3 last February. Same issue with the door’s alignment. Also one taillight letting water in. Tesla technician came to my house to fix both issues. No other issues since. Very happy with mine. Never cared to drive a car before but now I enjoy driving my car every time. The acceleration and handling are just amazing. Charging at home is awesome, and the active safety features have saved me from a small fender bender probably more than once. Watching Netflix while charging during a road trip is great.

    Been seriously looking forward to this video, especially after binge watching all of your Tesla videos recently for the second time which made me completely change my perception of them from thinking of them as a gimmick to actually planning to order one.
    I have seen a lot of people give out about the price of electric going up at chargers but I think if you’re buying one to solely charge at super chargers it’s obviously going to cost a lot more. Loved the cost breakdown of having a home charger, the money saved from if you done that milage in a diesel or petrol is insane. It’s great showing the proof that there is also a lot to be said for some small planning ahead and utilising free chargers.
    Personally I think there’s no compression to any diesel and most petrols, when you take the money your saving into account with the monthly cost of finance for example it can be drastically reduced, not to mention the value they are holding. I’ll always have a “fun” car myself like a mk1 Mx5 as well but I am 100% converted to buying a Tesla purely thanks to your videos.
    As usual your content is just top quality - brilliant video mate and genuinely thank you for providing the most informative and best Tesla content there is.

    Very informative and honest video as usual. Your videos were one of the reasons I finally decided to buy a Model 3 LR and I have never regretted that decision! I have just turned 10k kilometers with mine in about 14 months of ownership and I agree with all your points. The first really long trip in one of these cars is truly a rite of passage: you realize not only that it can be done without much hassle, but that those stops that you thought would be annoying are actually perfectly spaced during the trip and give you a much needed chance to stretch your legs or grab a bite.

Currently planing (hoping) to do a road-trip to southern Spain in January, via France and Andorra. Hi Chris, I watched all of your videos before I ordered a Model 3 which arrived from China at the end of May. No issues with panel gaps or paintwork. It has been fantastic to drive and is the best car I’ve ever had. Only problem has been “right door pillar camera blocked or blinded” which mainly occurs with low winter sun. I contacted my service centre and they checked remotely that there was no problem. It doesn’t affect the driving but is a little disconcerting. Your 1000 miles road trip is often shown to friends as an example to convince them that range anxiety isn’t a problem. There is a new supercharger in Camborne so Cornwall is much easier. I live on the South coast and managed trips to West Wales (v few Superchargers) and to Manchester- absolutely zero problem. I hope to change to a Model Y when 4680 batteries are available in a couple of years. Thanks again for your videos they helped so much.

    Always enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for the great content! I'll be picking up my Model 3 LR in a couple of months and was wondering what the battery degradation looks like for you? I see that you went over what your full charge was like when you first picked up the car and what it is now, but is that due to battery degradation in your case or is it related to other factors like the weather? Lastly, is there any way to actually see a current capacity percentage for the battery?

    • @SpawnPoiint
      @SpawnPoiint  2 года назад +2

      Thank you. I can't see the current capacity of the battery, but I've read you can reset it by charging it to full then driving and charging again. I've not done this yet. My range is down to the weather, and I don't believe it's degradation (it's better in the summer).

    I too intended to get the Model Y, but I have decided that the ride quality and interior acoustics are a deal breaker for me. I would prefer the extra space and hatchback. Decided to stick with model 3 LR and move to Y when they get air suspension

    • @thierryvt
      @thierryvt 2 года назад +3

      you and me both, test drove both the 3 and the y today. I really wanted to like the Y and was actually somewhat biased towards getting it but just couldn't, it is worse than the 3 in literally every way except for its size.
      If it had air suspension and some better sound insulation I would've gone for the Y without a second thought. Maybe in the future.
      Am now in contact with a couple leasing companies and if all goes well I'll put down my order for a model 3 long range somewhere next week.

I would have loved if phone calls could be made from steering wheel buttons . Others wish to have Apple play and Android auto, which Tesla wouldn't allow. It's not a perfect car, but nothing is perfect. You will still love it

    December 20, 2019 will be my second anniversary of my first EV - Tesla Model 3 Performance with FSD. The longest trip was a 4,200 mile trip from Colorado to southwest Florida and back. I’ve put 27,630 miles on it to date. Like you, it’s had a couple of hiccups. Nevertheless, I would not go back to a gas car, there is almost no advantage to a petrol car, but there are many disadvantages.
    Thank you for your review.

    Big time fan of the channel. I’d be interested to see some info on how the increase in electricity cost coming early next year impacts your cost figures… assuming you’re on a fixed deal at the moment that will likely have a spike when it comes to renewing.

    • @SpawnPoiint
      @SpawnPoiint  2 года назад

      You’re right, I am on a fixed until next winter so it’ll be interesting to see what happens. Hopefully by then the prices have settled down. But even if they doubled, it still wouldn’t make a huge impact over the year (for charging).

    Really interesting video, thank you. It would be good to know what purchase route you went down, cash, lease or PCP. If so, how much does your monthly look like on this car? This would be a big factor for future purchases to consider when looking into purchasing a Tesla, you breakdown of the savings was great and will help aid this decision.

    • @SpawnPoiint
      @SpawnPoiint  2 года назад

      You're totally right. The reason I left it out was due to the different factors (deposit, lease, PCP, cash, etc). Same as depreciation. I wanted to give the running costs rather than finance side which is a whole different discussion. Which ever route someone goes, it's still cheaper than an ICE car (like for like). Spending £450pm on a ICE BMW vs £450pm on a Tesla, you're quids in with fuel/tax/running costs. Maybe a future video idea...

My only personal ick is I am dreadful at parking both reverse into a drive and parallel between 2 vechiels and it the Teslas looking at them just seem way bigger than my 2012 Hyundai i20. Do you have any parking videos (more detailed on the parking cam maybe auto park feature) in the Tesla? Which may knock me off my fence and help me find the courage to go ahead and buy one!?

    I have over 60,000 miles on my model three and it’s the best car I’ve had. I replaced a BMW M3 and IMO the electric drivetrain beats ICE in every possible way. I’ve seen significantly lower costs to run (about 1/4 the equivalent gas cost here in America), also charge at home every night, and I’ve also done 3000 mile journeys with zero issues. I highly doubt I will ever buy a standard gas car again.

    Great video thanks, I also got my company salary sacrifice lease Model 3 performance based on videos such as yours. I've had mine just over 18 months and it goes back tomorrow, as I've changed job.
    I'm not a Tesla obsessive, so I am considering other cars for my next EV. The Tesla developed a loud and incredibly irritating squeak from a suspension arm ball joint, which I've read is common. I had booked it into my service centre, but they cancelled it a week later as they were too busy. A tad frustrating, and has affected my opinion, especially as the nearest service centre is 110 miles away.
    I'm considering BMW i4 (probably too expensive), Ioniq-5, EV6, refreshed E-Niro (2022). I'm also still considering the model3 LR.
    I did love the Tesla charging, performance and handling, satnav and infotainment. A lot of paint chips, even one on the middle of an alloy, and huge paint rash behind the wheels.

    The only real issue I am considering (other than the quality control and whether it will come in good condition) is how well charging at work will be. I can’t charge at home, I live in an apartment that doesn’t have any charging options (aside from running an extension cord through the upstairs window or something lol). However, I’m lucky because I work at a family business and we have a 240v welder plug with a huge extension cord. So, I’ll charge there (already bought the adapter). Hopefully it works out well enough. Also I have a couple Super Chargers near me (within 10-15 miles I have about three iirc). I bought a LR, coming Feb-March.
