Wow! Mads, I think this is your finest video yet (and you've already set a very high bar for yourself). 👌👏 Interesting, informative and thought-provoking. Delivered (appropriately) in your wonderfully minimalist, yet highly engaging, style. You are so clear and sure about what you think, and why, whilst leaving others to think differently if they wish. You convey not just great insights and knowledge of your subject, but also your warmth, your appreciation of beauty and your eye for aesthetics. How fortunate are we to have your splendid content on RUclips, but frankly it should be being made into what would be a highly watchable TV series. I know I'd watch. 😊 Thank you for doing what you do. 👍
I appreciate the reflective discussion contrasting your vision, the concept of minimalism, and individual preference. Love your work and find it inspiring.
Here I'am in California and we got temps in the 70's that about 30's C. I did get lucky today, I went to a local Botanic Garden for my Morning Walk and while video recording one of their fountains a Humming Bird came along and took a dip in the fountain and I got it on video. 😁 I'm switching from motorsports to Street-Urban-Nature photography.
I really appreciate your take on the minimalist esthetic. So many photogs call their work “minimalist” just because it’s single subject, black and white, or they used IM. You know your stuff and can easily explain what it is to be minimalist. I think the cropping examples were an excellent way to show how a composition becomes minimal. 👏👏👏
I was wondering while admiring your work: how does minimalism work in an urban environment? I‘m focused mainly on urban scenes, as I not even closely live near any of the gorgeous nature you show us. Maybe you’ll find some time to answer this question or suggest literature accordingly. Thank you.
Peter, thank you for a beautiful video. As a pro photographer I truly appreciate the simple clear explanations. Well done! On the other hand, I have noticed some of the copy paste clouds appearing in different images. These are exceeding photography best practices and more into digital artistry. The same goes for heavy cloning and objects removal. The scenery is beautiful and the photography is top notch. In which of the Scandinavian countries are you ? best, Adi
The first step to successful minimalism is that the remaining content be original and compelling enough to stand on its own. Unfortunately, a lot of found content has been found before. From the PRADA store outside Marfa,Tx to every prairie church, lighthouse and waterfall in America. Many images are simply the photographer saying "look how clever I am being minimalist" rather than "this is the optimal way to present this content". I was over found content decades ago and by creating my own content on site, when I leave, so does the shot.
I also prefer colored photos instead of black and whites. Portraits may work in black in white, but nature is colorful and that's what makes us overwhelmed about it. A black and white nature photo doesn't make me feel "Wow, how beautiful our world is...."
you spoke about reducing sense of scale, but it seemed as though in both examples,.you actually increased the actual sense of scale of the objects - In relation to the rest of the universe anyway. Thank you for this wonderfully educational and interesting video. (subscribed)
Excellent video and images. I love the purity and serenity of minimalism. Is it usually done with landscape? I have seen some with flowers. I just don’t have the eye for this yet. I prefer the snowy church scene. So clean and peaceful and I can hear the silence. Thanks for sharing your amazing talent.
Hi Mads. Could you link a transcript to this video if possible? My father is keen to learn but he has a hearing impairment and like to read a transcript as he watches. Thanks.
Landscape photography is awesome but only one problem. U need some serious cash to travel and enough vacation time from your job. Not a minimalist but a realist view.
Your opinion of black and white makes me think you've not shot film. I had a similar opinion of black and white until spending time with black and white film.
Marvelous episode, Mads! I like both versions of your Black Church, but if I would have to pick one, it would be the snowy version. However, my preference would be to hang both next to each other on a light gray wall with the snowy version to the right. I also appreciate your occasional adventures into B&W ... Whatever you call it, minimalistic or simplified photography, your photos convey a certain simple visual elegance.
I am not going to insult you or your work, but Minimalism is not quite what you are doing, the term itself is misleading and nothing to do with the absence of object content, in fact it’s object relationship to the frame…..
To chose between the church shot - winter seen or moody scene? I like both for the type of shot they are and would not have a favourite. When you discuss black and white vs colour it is definitely subjective. I rarely do them and notice when I do post them they get the least amount of likes.
In the jungle of self-centered videos or videos without much added value, finding such a dense and interesting one is a godsend. Mille mercis and I will follow you from now on.
As an avid amateur photographer, I personally find a minimalist image much more engaging when is is taken as a monochrome. There is a greater degree of contrast and mood which enhance the simple composition. This is of course a personal creative choice for the photographer! As always, I look forward to your weekly "Inspirational" videos! Thanks from Alberta, Canada! Craig.
Very nice. You make it look it easier than it is. While most of us are preoccupied with the technical aspects (what focal length lens, ISO, shutter speed etc ...), the most important part is composition. Developing an eye for composing a minimalist photo takes concentration and practice.
This is the first video I've seen of yours Mads. The photos are beautiful. The video is also very interesting. I need to save up for your Photoshop course, but its on the list.

Great video as always! I watched it right after the one called "The Exposure Myth in Photography" by James Popsys. Quite complementary actually... Mads insists on the fact that our artistic choices are our own. There is no point in questioning someone else's artistic choices, which is also what James was talking about. Quite interesting.
SUPER video with a ton of info !!! Love how you explain it all. I find it sometimes difficult to find balance (if needed or not) in some of my minimalist photos ( similar as your photo @ 6:49 ) . Certainly with a lot of negative space I tend to crop. My favorite of the Black Church is the one with the threatening sky. Thanks a lot for this very useful video Mads !!!
Beautiful work. I will add this idea to my toolbox. I prefer the photo of the Black Church in snow, but I also prefer the boat without the birds. One comment: black & white and monochrome don’t have to be synonyms.
Fantastic video! Just what I was looking for, but didn't realize it yet. Great format too -- a lot of examples with basic breakdowns makes it much easier to see compositional patterns between shots. Really bizarre that original minimalist artists didn't want their work to be interesting. Why bother? It's this kind of "statement-focus" that has made much art irrelevant to the public.
That was brilliant Mads and very well presented i am a huge fan of your work but i must admit that black and white photography is one of my favourite genres, and when you turn them into b&w they are stunning
I LOVE your minimalist photos 👍👍 very interested to know the one with extremely calm water & boat, seems u used long exp to do the water but impossible to shoot the birds meanwhile. Is this double exp ? Or post process ? Thx a lot ! If u do RUclips video about editing do u mind showing this one ?

Great video and nice tips. Beautiful pictures with perfect processing. Looking forward to incorporating some of your tips on my next attempt at landscape photography (wildlife is my usual domain).
I really like both the minimal church photos you showed, for different reasons. I like the left one because it's moody, conjures of feelings of mystery, curiosity, inquisition, foreboding, however, the one on the right conjures up feelings of calm, serene, a sense of relaxation. I like the left one more though just because I like taking darker, moodier, rich color, very detailed photos more than photos where most of the content is snowy white negative space. I think both church photos are splendid. For the minimalist part I'll go for sure with the white. But personally I would hang both side to side on my wall. Feel like a Ying Yang duo.
I like both the church photos. However, I prefer the real minimalist snow photo. The more dramatic weather with church isn't minimalist in my mind. It is more grand vista style. Loved all the images and the explanations.
