I know this presentation is 2 years old, but I just found it and wanted to say it was first class. It was/is truly inspiring.
So glad you enjoyed it!
I've been an avid amateur photographer for more than 30 years. This is one of the best lectures (webinars) I have ever seen. You gave us so much valuable information! Lately, I've been wondering "what's the point". Your words and images have inspired a new approach and goal for me. Thanks so much for sharing your experience, knowledge and images!
Thanks so much for taking the time to let me know what this meant to you. I'm so happy to hear it. Hope you make some great new images now!
So many photography tutorials on RUclips focus on the presenter - a talking head - and less on the images. Your tutorial kept me immersed for its duration, a rare occurrence on RUclips, and has made me think seriously about the way I compose images. It is a revelation, and I have been taking photographs for more years than I care to remember. You have created a presentation that is second to none that delivers the key concepts. I need to watch this again and again. As an education presenter I can always recognise a teacher. Power to your elbow madam! You are a shining light among mundane photographic educators. Keep these videos coming, please!
Bob... what a lovely comment to leave me. Made my day. I'm so glad you've found inspiration here. I don't post new videos terribly often, but I think if you hit the bell and subscribe, you'll be notified when there's a new one. I'm thinking about one on high key and low key next.
Your photos are all right but my idea of true minimalism - and indeed all photography - is to NOT mess with the image. There are so many soulless, stomach-churning "arty" images on the Net, that it is difficult to find anything original. Photos enhanced in Photoshop et al should be against the law - and that includes filters(!)
Love and kisses. Alice. xx
Thanks for your response. I don't agree about processing, but I think personal taste plays a big role. RAW files are just that... RAW material, and they do require some processing, just as JPG files are processed by the camera. But as an artist, you need to pursue the approach that makes your heart sing. Have fun with it!
@@judyhancockholland8007 Of course you don't agree. Thank you for your response. Alice. P.S. I am an artist. x
This is the best tutorial I ever saw. Your examples opened my eyes. Thank you sooooo much.
Thanks so much Karin. I hope to get more up in the future.
This is one of the most meaningful tutorials I ever took. Thank you very much Judy. And please let us know about your exhibits.
Thanks, Rodolpho. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. You can see my work at my online gallery: JHHphoto.com
@@judyhancockholland8007 thanks for sharing this
This is a fundamental truth you are covering with minimalism. You instantly changed my mind and forever. I can’t wait to go out there and train my new eyes onto this world.
That's great. I'm glad you got so much out of it.
Absolutely one of the best presentations I have seen anywhere. Practical, down to earth and actionable. Thank you for all of the effort you have put into this work. I am out the door first thing in the morning with a macro lens.
Very inspiring. I love the way you start wide, as one would likely see the scene and then work your way to an essential view. Thank you for this presentation.
Thank you!
I love this; I've been moving more and more toward minimalism in my music, and recently began to appreciate artists like Mark Rothko. This video has really helped me to wrap my head around photography as a minimalist art form. To some extent, it feels like learning things that we inherently know, but need help to recognize and clarify.
Wonderful! Thanks so much for your comment.
Judy, thank you for telling me why I was doing something for years but never realized WHY I was doing it!
Your comment made me chuckle. Keep shooting!
@@judyhancockholland8007 I began using this approach during my figure drawing classes as a Freshman in college in 1968, and in my (amateur) photography! Always looking at/for the angles, and patterns of dark and light. I found myself almost holding my breath while watching this video. Thank you!!
Love your work so much - just need to find the time to get practicing more. I almost expected the THREE rules of minimalism to be simplify simplify... then nothing :) that thought made me chuckle :)
Thanks. That would have been a clever way to end!
This has to be one of the best photography tutorials I've seen on youtube. I got so much from this.
Wow, thanks! Glad it was helpful.
I have watched this again and it's one of the very few RUclips videos that actually excites me, gives me a wealth of ideas and makes me want to grab my camera and get out. Many, many thanks Judy.
You're so welcome, Berny. I'm glad you got some value from it.
I didn't know why I found minimalism so appealing, but I think you helped show me why in this video. "Essence." It's the finer details. It's the new perspective. It's the raw wonder and appreciation for simplicity that just evokes emotion for some inexplicable reason. And at the end you said something very meaningful, "if it speaks to you, go for it." I've always felt like minimalist photography wasn't worth showing to others, because it just looks so simple, but I like it so I shouldn't be embarrassed that it is simple. Thank you.
Thanks, Nate.I'm so glad this spoke to you. In this busy, crazy world, we can all benefit from a little simplicity. Keep shooting! Thanks for your kindness in responding.
Thanks for sharing and including the before and after pictures. This was really useful!

excellent video. Without all this fanciness of visual effects and pretentious music. Pure knowledge and isnpiration in its simplest form. After watching so many videos about photography, this presentation was an oasis. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for your comment, Christina. I'm glad you found it helpful.
Great video Judy, could you add comments or maybe another video on lighting for your images please? While the images are beautifully minimalist, the lighting also brings out the texture, emphasises form and atmosphere. Thanks.
Noted!
i almost never give feedback or comment on any post or video that i see... but this video of yours was probably the best i've ever seen... very emotional on so many levels... i'm very grateful that i had the chance to see it! thank you so much, it was extremely motivating and inspiring! you changed the world with this, i hope you know that! thank you!
Thanks so much for these kind words. I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
What focal length(s) do you recommend? What is your go-to lens for minimalist photography?
Thanks for a great video!
Depends. Any lens, even a phone, will do in most cases.
Thank you for helping me understand the essence of minimalism! It's really nice to learn about minimalism through your many examples!
You are so welcome!
What an absolutely powerful presentation. I adored this much. Did your photographs evoke emotion? I have no shame some brought tears to my eyes. God bless...
Thank you for your kind comment, Anthony. I hope your own photography benefits.
This is absolutely spot on. I am quite inspired to try this, thank you Judy.
Thanks, Geoff. Have fun playing.
Absolutely wonderful tutorial!!!! Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Amazing. I wondered, it’s so simple , explanatory and inspirational. A teacher can only deliver like this. Expecting more tutorials about the Art of Photography ❤️
Thanks a ton. I'm working on one right now on composition... hope to have it up soon.
I just saw this today and the first thing I did was simple

It's the best video I've see on minimalist photography so far..

WOW! “Of” the image vs “about” the image! Thank you for sharing.
Glad you liked it!
Judy, thanks for this wonderful video on Minimalism in photography. I’m looking forward to practicing “seeing” in a new way.
Thanks for your comment, Elisabeth. This approach has really helped me "see" better.
This is a fantastic upload, really inspiring. Sorry I’m late to the party, better late than never.

Wow your tutorial is amazing. You had that capacity to change my view towards my photography. Love this video.
So glad you enjoyed it.
Thx, I really enjoyed this video and treatment of the subject minimalism…!
Happy to hear that.
Thank you for the inspiration. I am shooting digital and film. Seem to be navigating more to b/w film and have set up a dark room at home. Do you ever give courses?
Thanks, Gail. I do sometimes do courses. I also do one-on-one coaching and portfolio reviews. If you'd like to arrange something, you can contact me with the info at my website: JHHphoto.com

No, not necessary. There are several examples in the video that are not on a black background.

Thanks
Yes, some of them could.

Great! Your work is beautiful and inspiring. I have been shooting about 3 years now and have dabbled just about every genre. Your work really inspires me. However, I have never really found my niche. Stumbled on this video for the first in a while and WOW! Outside or office. Less is more.
Thanks Thanks Thanks
Thanks for your comment, Sterling. I'm so glad you found this helpful and inspiring.
I have admired minimalist photography in recent years and have the desire to look less at other's work and actually begin to do it myself. I've worked with a camera for over 50 years. Most of what I've done has been in fashion shots Or interpretive Portraiture. I have won some awards, but I preached the stage where Need to get more out of What I'm doing And I think I found What I've been looking for In minimalist photography. I learned so much From your 37 minutes Presenting The essence of what minimalist photography is all about. The information I received from listening to you has given me great insight and inspiration. I can't wait to get out into the world with my camera And look for the details like you described with examples. Thank you so much For sharing your knowledge In helping someone like me understand that there is so much more that can be done with my camera
I have just stumbled across this wonderful video....and wished I had seen it MUCH earlier. This is one of the best tuition video on minimilism in photography that I have ever seen. Others are OK and even very good, but your way of bringing out the powerful feeling of what makes the image special is in a league of it's own. I specifically like the way you show "normal" shots that can be very good as an image - and then show us what can be achieved by looking for the important parts. This comarison way of showing how to look further into an image is what sets your work apart. I feel invigorated to take my minilistic photography to a higher level. The mantra of "making the familiar look unfamiliar" is so well depicted in this video - Thank you so much for this.
Thank you sooo much for this inspiring tutorial!!
You're very welcome!
Outstanding video Judy, gracias!
You're very welcome.
Very inspiring for a new photography student
I'm glad you found it helpful.
I felt i couldn't develope my photography much more and then... this masterpiece poped up. I didn't kow, but obviously this is exactly what i require to make it to the next level.
Judy, thanks for making this! If you have the time, please continue you fantastic work. One day, people will understand, this is what they reaquires and not the latest gears.

You're so welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for your inspiring, Now i know what should i shot
Great. Thanks for commenting.
An extremely good and informational video. I believe that you have well explained your process to getting to the minimal. Can't say enough about what a great video this is. But, titles to photographs really don't work for me. While they may express what the photographer thought, they don't express what I may be seeing. If you have to put into words what your photograph is about then the photograph isn't telling the story by itself. Adams: Moonlight over Hernandez is an appropriate title as the photo is clearly about moonlight. The title just gives more specific info but it isn't needed to know what the photo is about. But when I see a title like "coming and going" and the photo has a rock and ship, I don't see coming and going but something else. On a whole your photos tell their own story and don't need "poetic" titles. But if that is part of the process for you that is great. For me I never look at a title provided by a photographer. I look only at the image. Super, super great video. My comments are not a criticism but rather how I look at minimalist photos.
Thanks for sharing your point of view. Many people would agree with you, and I don't always title my work.
As you said a personal view. An aside really as The images were beautiful and the video
was great and extremely useful
Some really beautiful images and some good advice. But I think you slap the minimalist label on too many of the images. Some of them are more closeup than minimalist. Just because the curves, shapes and tones are lovely and imaginatively conceived doesn't make all of them minimalist. The picture of the humming bird is spectacular but it has a lot of elements and is in fact full of stuff. It's beautifully framed and just wonderful, not minimalist. Essence, exclusion, , selection, investing yourself in an image telling a story, and minimalism are not all the same thing. To me it would be a meaningful and useful presentation if you didn't force the label on so many different ways of seeing. It sometimes seems like the word minimalist and the words striking, moving image are the same thing to you.
I agree that some of the images were "closeups" more than minimalist, the humming bird being the perfect example. Thanks for helping me clarify that for myself
I hear you, Spence. And I don't actually *equate* minimalism and striking, moving images, although I find that minimalism done well is striking and moving to me. Other genres can also be striking and moving, though. I see minimalism as a continuum, with some images more minimalist than others. Where the boundaries lie is subjective, I think. And that's okay with me.
I see your point of view, David. And I see minimalism as a continuum, with some images more minimalist than others. Where the boundaries lie is subjective, I think. And that's okay with me.
Judy, I can't express enough how inspiring your video is. I watched already a lot of tutorials her on youtube but this one truly stands out in many wonderful ways. In the same way you compose your photographs you also narrow the explanations down to the absolutely essence. Thank you so much for this tutorial! Looking forward to see more and will subscribe to your channel straight away plus telling some photographer friends about you.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

Wow.... this is art itself. This is real photographer at work. I remembered l commented on a London guy street shooter.... Snap3... No structure. Sadly it didn't do the new Ricoh any justice.
Thanks!

That is awesome! New video just posted on black and white. Hope you'll enjoy that one, too.
Thank you very much....I actually learned something from RUclips for a change.
Great to hear!

Gosh I feel compelled to comment again. I will be taking my camera out again tomorrow with 'new eyes'. Brilliant. Thanks from Northumberland, UK home of the Hadrian's Wall.
Go for it! And thanks for the lovely comment!
Hi Judy, congrats, a very impressive kind of photography. To you prefer a special focus length? Tele? Macro?
Thanks for your answer
It all depends on the subject. My adobe buildings were shot with a zoom lens. In fact most of the images in this video were shot with zoom; only a very few with a macro lens. But you can do this kind of work with any camera and lens, even a phone.
I’m not too far from you in the Lower Mainland. Really enjoyed this, gave me a lot to think about in my own photography. Will have to watch for your work when I’m on the island! Thank you for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I believe, I have mastered the art of minimalist photography.. after watching this video. Tnks a lot ❤️❣️❣️
My pleasure 😊
This is what I have been searching for after many years of photographic soul searching. I could not visualize it better. I found my way today. Thanks very much, Judy.
Wow, thank you! So glad it was helpful. I've just put up part 2 of my composition series. You might find those helpful, too.
Most amazing.. real eye opener.. thanks for sharing 🙏🏽.. look forward for more 😊❤️

Very thorough tutorial on the art of minimalist photography. I find myself looking a lot now. Your lighting is exceptional as well. Perhaps a RUclips topic for another day? Thanks for doing this.
Thanks, Paul. I do offer a workshop on lighting, and will consider doing some short-ish tutorials on that. I do have some other topics in mind, mostly related to composition, adapted from workshops I give.
Thank you, this has given me much needed inspiration & motivation.
I'm so glad!
wow... your explanation is really inspiring.. I keep asking to myself.. why I do photography. I can find some of the answer in this video.. thanks.
Great to hear!
Loved this. Superb content and clear explanation. As a relative beginner it really made me think. Would love a follow up tutorial explaining ‘how’ ( settings et etc) and how to edit.
Thanks for your comment, Lynn. There's a lot on RUclips on those other aspects, so I doubt I'll add to that. Best of luck with your images. (I do offer private tutoring. You can contact me through my web site at JHHphoto.com)

Excellent Webinar Judy. I've only just realised you're in a number of the mono forums I'm in. Well spoken, clear, precise, no jargon, easy to understand and educative. You're the 3rd Canadian photographer I've come across this year that really does have an essence and passion for ones work. I've always struggled with minimalism though, I can see it, feel it, and when I'm looking through the viewfinder or just viewing the subject with the naked eye it looks good. Unfortunately when I open the images into Adobe I'm hating it. That said I think I'm going to start again with flora. I was shooting bridges and mills, lighthouses and seascapes. So, its back to basics I think. Great video.
Thanks so much for your feedback. I'm gald you found it useful.
It was a great webinar. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and emotions. Very powerful images. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Judy. Thanks for sharing. You highlight perfectly the fact that not only Devil is in the details !
However, I think each photographer has his own way to see and shoot the world. As you mentioned, it's all a question of feelings, sensations, inspiration, personal aesthetic, relationship you have with your environment and your gear, and what guides your pictures. For me it's mainly contrasts and humour. Or capturing emotion between two people (or more). That's why minimalist pictures only represents less than 10% of my pictures. But I really appreciate them !
Thanks for your feedback, Marc. We all shoot in our own way, and that's entirely appropriate.
I have been trying to 'get into photography' for many years and every now and then get my camera out. But now, having watched this wonderful video I realise what type of photography I am drawn to. I don't understand why I didn't realise it before. I'm feeling very inspired right now. Thank you Judy
That's so awesome! Keep practising "seeing" and shoot what you love!
I enjoyed the video. Nice to know I was often shooting minimalist back in my film days before I knew the term, and still today. One of my favorite landscape lenses is a 200-300mm zoom used close just for cropping into the small sections of a scene. Those can be so powerful. Well presented. Thank you.
Thanks! And I agree that minimalism can be very effective in landscapes, though I don't shoot many of those myself.
This was such a well done tutorial. Thank you so much, and greetings from across the pond (North Van).
You're very welcome!
Thank you for this valuable instruction, it's much appreciated.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent, very informative, the questions you asked "what could you shoot here?" were really eye opening.
Glad it was helpful!
Love the tutorial. Excellent. I once was denied entry in a minimalist art show. I was told the three judges spent twenty minutes discussing my piece. I was told they wanted more. My reaction was, I won . . .
Glad you enjoyed the tutoria. Keep shooting!
Thank you for pointing out things I´ve already been drawn to, but not yet thought through. This video has helped me a lot understanding what I was searching for.
I'm so glad!
Hi, couple of month ago i started to simplify and simplify my already taken photos.
But since i watched this video, something has changed and i just feel a very confortable sensation because i knew from the begining that's the path i wanted to follow, the path of seeing the world around me in another way, in a closely way, in a simplify way.
Thank you for all, you truly inspired me 🙏
I'm so glad it was helpful for you. I appreciate your comment. Have fun!
It's March of 2022 and I wishing I had discovered this video sooner. What a treat to find another artist that "sees" much the same way I do. Knowing I have an exhibit this coming June and struggling with what to present, you have provided the answer, thank-you! Your comment about needing something less complicated rings especially true after two years of the "damnpenic". I believe that people are seeking something uncluttered and peaceful at this time.
Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Simple but deep inspiring explanation abt minimalism.one will understand thoroughly abt the concept of minimalism.thanks a lot mam
My pleasure 😊
Hi, I just noticed that someone with the name Petar Zambo is running your great video Minimalist Photography "copy / paste" on his channel. Do you know about it?
Thanks for pointing this out. I was not aware and have asked him to remove it. If he doesn't do so, I'll be reporting it to RUclips. I don't make money from my tutorials, and don't want anyone else to. Also, he can't answer questions, and I value the interactiions with folks who view my work. Thanks again.
Wonderful, educating and very inspiring video. Just what I needed at this moment, when the summer's gone, and more generally, when I feel to have gotten stuck in my photographic progress. And amazing images
Thanks so much for your comment. I'm so happy to be able to help you get unstuck. Glad you enjoyed it.
