Great tips Berrys oh boy. I dug up wild strawberries and planted them on north side of my house. OMG the runners are CRAZY...I planted a ton of garlic in the raised beds this year. Last year was the first year I ever grew garlic. Wonderful experience. Best garlic i have ever eaten planted in 3 beds this year. I have potatoes and onions that began to grow in my kitchen drawers so am planting them...organice hoping for the best. Thanx for the inspiration. Gina in Upstate NY
Kudos to you for planting an orchard of 20 fruit trees! I too grew up with an orchard and I am replicating it on a smaller scale. What blows me away is how the Cedar Waxwings and Baltimore Orioles love fruit trees!
Your videos are so helpful. I’m wondering how you keep chipmunks out of the beds?! And squirrels? Whatever I plant, grows and then just before I can pick it, one of those creatures takes a bite and throws it. Argh. Enjoy the day!
I have a zillion of both cute critters, so grow oregano, spring onions, and mint in my raised beds. They don’t seem to like these scents when I cut the plants and spread them around anything they bother. I have tried the repellent sprays but they don’t work for long. Also putting red pepper flakes around new plantings or spraying hot sauce mixed with water on leaves will help-at least until it rains again!
I love everything you do im so proud of you your content is so informative. It's always such a pleasure to learn something new from you. Keep up the excellent work.
Super helpful about straw with the strawberries. I also learned a bit about onions, which I’m trying this year. I was shocked that it was okay to use that much fertilizer. Didn’t realize I was supposed to use that much. Thanks for such fantastic content. Zone 4a TugHill region in NY.
Do you make your own compost? I lived your posts, and I'm interested in hearing what you do to support biodiversity, the bees and insects. That's what made me think about the compost...since you're talking about fertilizer.
My June bearing strawberries are in-ground and are in year three since planted. This year I am having issues with grasses and False Strawberries invading and crowding out the "good" strawberries. They strawberries both the false and the good ones are blooming already in my Zone 6a (Central Indiana) -- is it going to hurt my patch if I start digging/maybe even forking out the invasives? Thanks for any advice you might provide. --Moni north of Indianapolis.
You are a complete joy to watch. Your teaching techniques are so helpful for a beginner.
