I've been working with wood most of my life and have never seen a piece of wood that costs $2200.00. I'm trying to imagine what I would make out of it if I got it. Probably nothing. I would just end up hanging it on the wall just as it is and framing the receipt underneath it. At first, I thought it might make a good bench but I couldn't possibly risk having someone sit on it and spill something on it. Thanks for being honest and not shy about letting us know you're charging for the fresh air inside it. That was my favorite part of the tour. Its good to have a sense of humor when it comes to rosewood prices. Now I need to step outside for some fresh air.
Some woods are rare, others are rarely used, but still quite distinctive. Honey locust, and Black Locust are consider weed trees here, but he wood very beautiful, and crisp. This is true of many types of wood, people never think of using.
Hi Rory, this vid is about 5 years old so I hope you are well and not dead or something. while you were talking I wondered if it would behoove you to start a movement that encourages wood working, in schools and in private. So many people are building things out of pallets and barn wood that I think many people would love a class to get the basics down. The people who find out they have talent would quite possibly end up being your customers. Thanks for your video, I would love to buy a franchise from you when you get them going. we will have wood working classes all over the world.
There is too much hate in this world already. How about being positive and helping. These business owners are trying to make a living just like you. The wood is beautiful.
Cool. Not sure what to think about the rosewood though. It''s pretty much extinct as a wild species and people are killed daily trying to get it. I know because I live in Cambodia and hear about it all the time. They have Thai soldiers guarding single trees now. On the other hand, the problem is mostly Chinese furniture firms, not small specialty importers/woodworkers/instrument makers. I think small-scale woodworking is good for sustainability.
WE certainly get lots of gorgeous canadian wood incl cherry and birdseye maple and flame birch but we also send lots of good usa wood to canada. what with the cichlids-??? do you get them from lake malawi or do you breed them yourself?
I just finished working on a house that featured several woods from your facility. Windows and doors were trimmed with bloodwood, purple heart, and marblewood, two ceilings are zebrawood and stairs are bloodwood with birdseye maple risers. I counted 12 species of wood in the interior. Most were finished with water based polyurethane. I'm curious to see how the different woods darken and change colors with age and light exposure. Some of the bloodwood is already turning a nice shade of brown which seems to accentuate the grain.
Hello david wiles. My name is Paul Wiles. Not a common name, and a bit of a coincidence we were watching the same clip. I'm originally from England, but have lived in Australia for 40 years. Wiles is an English name, and is old English for seaman or sailor. The name originated in Kent south east England, where my family is from. Regards Paul
Ya Meneer, lekker hout. Ek is in Australia! We have a wood here called Forest oak or rose she-oak (Casuarina torulosa) Quartersawn it would have to be my favourite. Do you stock it?
Also I have a grand piano. One of its under frame beams (right under the flat sound board) has dark grains. I wonder whether it is a natural grain patter of certain type of wood species, or is it sort of problems? What type of wood has dark, distinct grains?
there is absolutely nothing wrong with cutting rare woods to expose their beauty, it's the sheer waste of it that is the problem....like Japan using Brazilian rosewood for disposable chop sticks in some restaurants. etc.
That’s the most ludicrous thing I’ve ever heard. Disposable chopsticks made of Brazilian rosewood? I am more and more shocked everyday with how stupidly extravagant and wasteful people can be.
That's highly unlikely, Brazilian Rosewood (Dalbergia Nigra) is protected under CITES 1, very heavily restricted, you can't even export products made from the wood.
is birds eye maple as rare as I've heard claimed? also, I bet keeping the outside of your building "plain jane" saves you a lot of property tax? (I build knives, and starting to do fine pens as well)
Beautiful wood. I'm drooling, but too far away. If you don't mind my asking, where are you from? I'm an English teacher, and your pronunciation is interesting. Greetings from Taiwan, home to lots of really good wood.
As the wood is stored and moisture stabilized, I wonder if there is an actual "shelf life" for certain types of wood. If kept in the right conditions would a piece of cut but untreated wood last almost indefinitely?
Italian Cypress, hands down. It's also far more hard and durable than I ever would have imagined. One would never guess those trees could produce usable lumber but they most certainly do.
Hi Rory, Long time since I heard your voice. Last time we spoke was way back in Wetton, Cape Town when I was at the Rarewoods warehouse with my late father, Peter Wiles. Remember him? My wife and I still dabble with woodwork. regards, David Wiles
David, i remember your father well. A woodworker and artist par excellence. I still have two of his intarsios. A scene with walter raleigh s vessels, docks etc and also a brilliant canadian scene of canoes ann a lake with log cabin etc which he custom crafted for e from a b+w picture- absolutely gorgeous all the very best. rory
The US considers wood rare if it isn't grown or readily available in the US. Don't confuse rare with endangered for which there are strict laws in our country against the importation of endangered wood. Go ask Gibson Guitar about that LOL.
You are 100% correct. I would like to add to what you said if you don't mind, If an endangered tree falls down due to wind or some other natural cause it would be unethical not to harvest any part of the tree that is salvageable.
If you love your country don't submit to a foreign power , a corporation called the UN with a Saudi as Human Rights chair . What you refer to as 'strict laws ' they are UN agreements . It is already illegal to collect rainwater in the USA thanks to traitors .
I use to spend about a month every year in Maine.i been through your town.i was expecting you to have the typical Maine accent. Ya can't caaant get that wood fram hare" kinda threw me off with that foreign accent.. beautiful wood selection though.i build guitars.i am going to your website to see what I might buy.
Could I buy a 12 in ch piece of Africa Black wood and a 12 inch piece of Pink ivory, cut off from the logs you showed? I am a novice wood tuner and am interested in exotic wood. Could I have a price and I live in Alberta Canada just south of Edmonton "Home of the Great Hockey payer that moved to the USA, Wayne Gresgey
Fred, both of those woods are extremely hard and require skills beyond a novice woodworker. we prefer to sell the logs full length although we do have a few smaller logs of pink ivory and wild olive. prices are on our website. email me and we can discuss further.best rory
all our wood is sourced from sustainable stock and by ensuring a fair price the locals get work and the wood is well utilized rather than ending on the firewood pile which is where 95% of wood ends up
Mexico, Maine. He said that many times. Maine is in the north eastern part of the country. This man is also from South Africa. Before you throw out some trolling, you got to know the facts.
mexico is a great location with plenty of wood, rivers, mountains and hard working folk. we love operating from our spacious warehouse. the excellent logistics and internet provided by various USA firms mean we can supply the world with interesting wood
I love watching woodwork in a sawmill, but I draw the line at Brazilian hard woods being imported by rich lumberyard owners in the West. A hardwood tree in the tropical rain forests of Brazil or elsewhere takes over a hundred years to mature. And heartless illegal loggers in places like Brazil, Indonesia and elsewhere are selling their own natural heritage to factories in the West at a devastating rate. People with a conscience in Western countries should refuse to buy or use furniture made of wood from rainforests which are the heritage of all of us. And please stop calling this precious resource 'exotic'. There is a lot of negative baggage embedded in the use of this word.
Anzay Warid I am happy with my cocobolo fretboard it did however cost a pretty penny I think that is because 8 African pygmies died cutting the piece and it was only grade B, I hear that that usually 8 plus a chief die cutting the grade A pieces. The real sad part is cocobolo is native to central and south america so they had to import said pygmies to cut it. However the cost is irrelevant as it made a beautiful fretboard with a nice tone and you really cant get much better than a cocobolo fretboard so i would say worth it/10
If they own the timber then who the fuck are you to say that they are heartless? They are merely living off of the land! Did you eat any fruits or vegetables today that were grown on your property, you heartless IDIOT????? "I draw the line?" PFFFFFFFFFFFTTTTT!!!!!!! YOU ARE A FUCKING IDIOT!!!!
Ok, what happens to these trees once they 'mature'??? Ever think of that? Do they eventually DIE? Ok, if trees die, can't humans USE them before they die? No? Sustained use is 'ok', pal.
God created wood for us. It is the perfect substance. If he had not wanted us to kill animals he wouldn't have made them out of meat. He also provides us with crude oil but didn't make it easy to get to or use. God loves us and wants the best for us but he expects us to get up off of our backsides.
“If god didn’t want us to kill animals he wouldn’t have made them out of meat” is perhaps the stupidest thing invented heard all year, and seeing as it’s December 31st you really made it by the skin of your teeth

Great to read the comments left by other concerned planet dwellers, the message is heard and understood. Keep up the good fight.
Nice stuff

there is absolutely nothing wrong with cutting rare woods to expose their beauty, it's the sheer waste of it that is the problem....like Japan using Brazilian rosewood for disposable chop sticks in some restaurants. etc.
wtf really ?
Seriously?
That’s the most ludicrous thing I’ve ever heard. Disposable chopsticks made of Brazilian rosewood? I am more and more shocked everyday with how stupidly extravagant and wasteful people can be.
Good work

Not much to see, only we would like to see the woods in a clearer picture instead.Thanks.
As the wood is stored and moisture stabilized, I wonder if there is an actual "shelf life" for certain types of wood. If kept in the right conditions would a piece of cut but untreated wood last almost indefinitely?
