- Recipe here: www.joyofbaking.com/breakfast... Stephanie Jaworski of Joyofbaking.com demonstrates how to make Hot Cross Buns. Hot Cross Buns are a seasonal yeast bread traditionally served on Good Friday. These enriched buns are spiced with ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, and are studded with raisins (or currants) and candied mixed peel. What makes them instantly recognizable is that the tops of the buns are marked with a 'cross' which symbolically represents the Cross of Christ and the Crucifixion.

Just made these today, first time I have ever attempted hot cross buns. I used raisins and sultanas as not everyone likes candid peel and they were absolutely fantastic. Your instructions were so easy to follow. I have a few of your recipes now which I will be trying out. Thank you for the patient and clear explanations you give. You are a treasure.
Thank you for putting this on here just in time for Good Friday!
Love the way you always explaine "why" 💜
I agree, freshly baked by ourselves is always better. Another great recipe. Thank you 😊
I love watching your videos. You are excellent in demonstrating all the mouth watering pastries! ❤
THIS is the hot cross bun recipe I've been looking for!! Thank you!
These buns look perfect. I've been making hot cross buns every Easter for many years. I use a similar recipe to this. A few years ago I started leaving the buns overnight to prove, because the dough takes a long time to rise. I shape them before I go to bed the night before good Friday and bake them early in the morning. They rise beautifully overnight. I always do the piped flour and water paste before baking then glaze them with golden syrup or apricot glaze is lovely. Happy Easter xx
looks delicious 😊
These look so lovely. I really want to try them out. Thank you for the recipe.

I really love your videos. You give information like the "window test" for the dough which I have never heard of before. It's very easy to understand and follow you through the steps. You really take the fear out of trying it :) Thank you.
Heavenly. I love your recipe. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful buns, Stephanie. Thank you for this soft, luscious, pillowy bread. Always a great time watching your videos. Sending love from Virginia

Thank you Stephanie. That is a great recipe. I am going to try it for Easter. Greetings from Portugal.
Yes, they look soo pretty and I am sure they taste really good.
I love how you take a bite and enjoy when they are fresh and warm. You seem so genuine. You also have made me really appreciate my scale when I want my baked goods to be of uniform size. I'm going to make these with golden raisins because they taste better to me. I used to leave raisins out of most recipes, but with golden raisins I usually add more.
Thanks again for another video, this is an update of an older video? I think I remember this recipe from you. Looking forward to what I call my "Stephanie" moment of savoring the first warm taste of homemade goodness!
Thanks for the kind words. Yes this is an update of a very old video from 2011.
Thank you for sharing this and all your recipes. You always make it seem doable for everyone and I love that you give lots of options if you don't have the same tools. I started out many years ago with you having no tools and now worked my way up to have scales and mixers. Yes, you can do it!
How wonderful! These seem easy to make and I thank you for sharing your recipe with us as I’ll be making them for sure. They look wonderful 😍

I’ve never actually had these. I have a 5yr old nephew and a 1.5yr old niece. We were listening to nursery rhythms and hot cross buns came on. My nephew asked me if I could make some so he could try it. So here I am. Haha. 12 years ago I was learning to bake for my friends. Now I please my little critics.
I think the candied peel is what makes this recipe. Yum.
Another great recipe 😊❤

Thank you ma'am for the delicious recipe and, for, 12:10 - 12:12, yes they are called the "balls of the hand" or anatomically, just, MCP joints (metacarpo-phalangeal joints) :) {Balls of the foot are called MTP joints.}
I’m a sucker for a Hot Cross Bun! These look yummy, can’t wait to make them. If it’s your recipe they’ll be good! 😋
Hi..lovely recipie...can u plz tell what constitutes in the mixed candied peel ur using.
Stephanie, you are mistaken on Allspice. It is ground Allspice berries from Jamaica. There are substitutes made from a mixture of other spices but they are not Allspice.
Yes. Allspice is not mix spice.
You make it look so easy
Tnx a lot stephanie for sharing ur recipe 😊😊😊

Hi, lovely recipie . I have tried baking the hot cross buns they turned lovely ...But my buns do not turn brown , they remain off white. P.s. i use a gas oven . Could you guide me on where did i go wrong.
Wow
I came here to see the real hot cross buns that I’m used to see when my baby is watching his ABC kids TV baby songs lol... hope it deserves the watching
Yammmy
Very nice nd wonderfull recipe
Thank you thank you, am gonna make these an share out to my family an friends an YESSSS love them with cheddar as a kid that’s how my mom would serve us, an yet another great recipe 🙏🙏thank you 😘
If I halved the size of the buns, how long would you guestimate I should bake them?
I’m sorry but I’ve never tried that, so I can’t say what the exact baking time would be.
Always a sweetheart
U are wonderful in your explanations thanks so much.can we use bread flour instead of apf ?
You could although it would change the texture .
I have noticed that bakers in Great Britain, like Mary Berry use bread flour, or as they say "strong flour". Probably best to weigh the flour.
I'm going to have a go at these. I'm still fighting with my electric oven. It has top and bottom heaters and combination with fan. When I use combination the top of my recipes over brown sometimes. A silly question maybe, but would reducing the temp. of the top heater overcome this problem? I hear you say 'try it', but I don't want to risk spoiling what looks very appetising. Thanks for the recipe.
For baking you would only have the bottom element turned on.
@@joyofbaking Thankyou.
