@@vigabrielvargasvictor3292 you mean Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. ? well, YES. FUCKING AWESOME SHOW but Innocence (2nd film) can be watched without the SAC series, no problem
Blade Runner Franchise has a special place in my heart and today I searched for some shows like Blade Runner and I found this. Because right now I'm on a time budget and as I read on a website, I'm just going to watch 1995 and Innocence for now. Hope it satisfies my high expectations (because I'm a Blade Runner freak XD)
They're been shitting on it since the first trailer simply because Scarlet Johansson isn't Asian. The real question is if this will be another Dragon Ball Evolution where everything is bad, or if it'll just be fans being ridiculous.
Considering how many people watch & comment on his videos, gotta go a little easy on him in regards to reading them all. I'd be surprised if he actually reads all of them, but I expect he kind of skims through the comments. It's one the few advantages that small channels have over big ones: not as many comments to read so you can actually respond to them all and connect with the audience more. Popularity unfortunately causes a rift between the uploader & the fans because after a while there just are too many people, even if they want to be interact with all the fans like Markiplier for example. He wants to chat with all his fans but it's like impossible for him compared to 3 or 4 years ago because there's millions of people now. At some point you pretty much just stick with a group of longtime fans and then try your best to interact with newer ones if you can. :/
Im sure he doesn't, Ive never seen him comment in years. If 90% of the top comments are always the same joke told over and over while only a few actually discuss the actual film why would he bother reading them? Comments and views generates more income for them, that's why they want people to comment.
Just got it on 4K recently and gotta say, this must have been really influential. It feels like I've seen everything in it already from movies and shows that came out way after 1995
I love this film in every aspect, but I am aways in awe of how amazing the art styles were blended and all the subtle details, reflections, lighting etc. they captured so accurately. Many modern live action films don't even do as good a job.
Other way around, Ghost In The Shell is overrated and a bit of a William H Gibson rip-off, Akira is a better film, better animated, based on a better Manga and a lot more original.
I also recommend Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, the TV series, which is some of the (if not THE) most intelligent thing made for TV, ever. Two seasons exist.
Isn't it, though? For me, it's my second favorite anime right behind Cowboy Bebop. How can you not adore Mary McGlynn as the Major and Crispan Freeman as Togusa?
I'm wrapping up season 1 now, and I have to say it pales in comparison with the original movie. I would say I got much more out of the themes explored in Aeon Flux.
Another great review, Chris. I was 9 when I watched GITS for the first time. My cousin let me borrow his VHS copy in 1996, and it blew me away. I also watched it multiple times just to try to even understand it because it was so confusing to me at the time, but so enthralling that I couldn't stop thinking about it. In 1999, a film came out called The Matrix. My dad took me to see that film a couple weeks after it came out, and we were both blown away. The thing is, I sat there the whole time comparing elements, and even scenes to GITS. "That's the market gun fight from the beginning with the Watermelons!" "Morpheus has Batou's glasses!" "They plug themselves in from the back of their necks to enter a computer world!" "The girl who played Trinity could totally play Motoko in a GITS movie, whey didn't they just make that?!" My dad and I enjoyed the hell out of the Matrix, and to this day it's still one of my favorite films. Plus, it was A LOT easier to wrap my head around than GITS (however, I was 3 years older by the time it came out), but were not for GITS, The Matrix wouldn't be what it was. It wasn't until years later when I found out the Wachowskis gave their producer a copy of GITS so get a feeling for what they wanted thematically and visually for the Matrix. GITS is still my favorite anime film to this day, and I'm excited to see what the adaptation will accomplish. A few things from trailers have me a little worried, like the new "Why can't I feel my body?" scene, so I'm not holding my breath, but I'm not pessimistic, either.
Wishful thinking to believe it would have even a shred of style that 1995 has. Apparently the practical effects are nice, but Im never going to watch it.
It's funny I didn't know a thing about this series until I saw the trailer for the live-action film. I sought it out and loved it, and now I get the feeling I'm not gonna like the live action version. 😅
even if the live action movie is shit, you gotta be grateful that it gave so much attention to this masterful series. Many ppl would've never heard of it, if it wasn't for the new hollywood movie
Wow I am impressed with your analysis of the original movie Ghost in the Shell! Your insight is spot on, and your presentation was outstanding! I could ramble on, however being a fan that has every movie, and series of Ghost in the Shell, I appreciate your passion towards this amazing franchise! Thank you for posting this video on one of my favorite movies of all time! This year is a triple hit for me, Star Wars, Legend of Zelda, and Ghost in the Shell, it is an awesome year indeed!
I love the angelic music you put in for the A+ ranking you gave this movie! I definitely need to go back and watch this movie again. It has probably been 15 years since I've seen this movie! Thanks for the review Chris!
What struck me the most watching this movie was that it seemed like everyone involved in creating it put a lot of love and passion into it. They took their time to create a movie exactly how they envisioned it, in the exact way they wanted to do it, with the subject matter they personally found fascinating. There's simply very few films where this seems to be the case. That's what makes it one of the best all around movies ever made, IMO.
I saw this for the first time last month at an independent theatre. It was so amazing and thought-provoking that I saw it again the next day in English. In-between, I watched analysis videos on it that pointed out the symbology in the background, so having the second watch be in English was really nice since I could pay attention to the visuals more than during the sub. The music is stupendous and reflects the mood of the movie perfectly. Definitely going to track down a blue ray of this one- it is so worth it.
I like your attention to the detail of Motoko's eyes and the mannerism of Batou towards her naked body (I always saw it as a body language used in manga and doramaland not so much to cover it from the cold but to hide in sight its object of desire, I think that Battou has assumed his friendzone since the reproductive wishes of Motoko are like into another level and personally ship the prot-antagonist relationship)
Yoo man I just want to say I'll been watching your videos for the past couple of months and you really have made me look at film in a whole new way, definitely my favorite film critics right now, Ebert would be proud bro
The original Ghost in the Shell was amazing, however, I never felt the same about the majority of sequels and spin offs since. They never had the raw power of the original.
Innocence had some amazing visuals, but yeah it goes even deeper in the philosophical aspects so it gets kind of trippy and a bit hard to follow, but still quite enjoyable. The series "Stand Alone Complex" for me was horrible, I think it focuses more in the action and leaves out all the thought provoking and aesthetics the original movie had.
I guess is just personal taste. Yes, it goes a lot deeper as far as the lore of the story, but I just didn't like the aesthetics of it, and I feel they left behind a lot of the contemplative and thought provoking aspects of the 1995 movie. I can't say anything about the manga. Honestly I have never read it.
The manga and Stand Alone Complex/2nd Gig series were much more sexual with Motoko and I found it even more interesting to see how she can behave extremely sexually, yet still has that disconnect to humanity. She enjoys sex, clearly, even has a sex site that she regularly gets involved with in the manga, but she doesn't seem to have any emotional attachment to sex. I love her and Batou's relationship because he respects her so much, yet he's also one of the only people she will openly rely on and open up with. I always kind of wished they ended up together, but I guess it's better that they didn't because that really held the integrity of the series.
I watched this a few weeks ago because you mentioned it in another review and I really loved it. Exactly what you said - it just kind of drifts to a close with lots of open ends, but it does it so beautifully and it is so satisfying that I didn't mind at all. The music is just haunting and god those frames, I'm getting flashes of stills just thinking about it. Amazing movie, thank you for the recommendation Chris :)
Prediction before watching video: I love ghost in the shell I grew up with it I would even make short films with my friends about it and they were horrible
I was completely BLOWN AWAY, when I first saw it. Still am. My daughters are really into manga but they're still a bit too young for this one. Can't wait to watch it with them both and watch their reactions :)
Shiri Gaming it's not whitewashed the characters who are white in the movie were actually white in the series plus have you noticed how the characters of any anime are western appealing anyway so it shouldn't matter unless the movie is a piece of shit who plays the characters shouldn't really depict your opinion on if the movie sucks or not give it a chance everything deserves one even if it'll suck
Hey Chris, you've become my new favorite youtube movie critic. I truly enjoy your reviews, knowledge and passion for films. Please keep doing your reviews.
I already know what he's gona say about the new Ghost and the Shell. It's not Dragonbullshit Evolution but it doesn't live up to its source material. Not that it has to live up to it but not perfectly crafted like the animated version. And give it a B-.
The controversy on Johansson staring in the new live action film got me interested in Ghost in the Shell (GintS) a couple of weeks ago. That's why I watched all of the original films and GintS: Stand Alone Complex and GintS: S.A.C. 2nd Gig. GintS was something I always heard about since I was a young and having watched them now, I think you hit the nail on the head when you described what the movie is about and who the characters are and why the film so good. I saw the original movie at 8 and was scared shitless by the imagery, but now that I'm older and have seen _WAY_ more f***ed up things on the internet, I have a new appreciation for the movie's themes and thought provoking existential questions. Now I've become a massive fan of the series and pretty much have joined in the concern for this new live action film. I'm kinda against the whole revenge motive for motoko (or whatever the name they gave her is) as it doesn't seem like her character. Not to mention how many other revenge films there are already. Hopefully its good.
"Guys, I grew up with Ghost In the Shell. It's a great movie, and you know I watched that movie 5 times a week at minimum all the way until I grew up to be a big ol' boy." -Chris, Probably.
Hey Chris, I noticed your number of subscriptions, and I wanted to say great job and good luck on your way to 1 million! your so close! also great video as always!!!
6:13 what are you talking about? It was explicitly said in the movie that the Puppetmaster was created by Section 6 in order to manipulate networks as they saw fit, it was a sort of bug that made it develop a ghost. It is exactly as it was in the original manga.
Dud I did not understand this movie at the end heh but the animation was INCREDIBLE!! The opening was also pretty cool, the being underwater thing to make her "feel" was nice, but the dialog bored me and I was close to falling asleep but It definitely wasn't bad. I wouldn't consider it an AMAZING movie like Chris, I guess it's too artsy for me *SHRUUUUUUUG*
The whole concept and execution of this film is way beyond it's time and truly artistic and fantastic. I love the idea and the questioning of the characters. It was a boring film to many who watched it as a kid based on my friends talk. It is true, as I have gotten older, I have appreciated this film a lot more. It's so adult.
Review foreign movies Chris. I suggest checking out Amores Perros, Oldboy, City of God and I Saw the Devil to start it off. Prepare to see some absolute masterpiece films that definitely have their role in international cinema.
What version should you buy to watch this? I thought about buying the 25th anniversary edition since its recent and in blu ray but from what I understand is the subs kinda suck and from what I gather the dub is not a proper translation with some censoring done. Is there a version with both good subbing and proper video?
The trailer reminds me of a 23 ronin. I think it's gonna be a flop. Since ScaJo is in it, it will be watched; however, I don't think it can make enough money to cover the production value alone.
+Renato Marques I agree. I'm not a diehard GitS fan but the live action one looks like it's been a copy and paste job of other sci-fi films. It doesn't have the conviction of the original anime series. That being said, I guess we'll see how it will do soon enough.
Apparently, Mr. Stuckmann here was on Twitter and pitched some alternative dialogue for Batman v. Superman, and Batman telling Superman, "Tell that to Zod's snapped neck." was among the dialogue Stuckmann wrote. Some people found this cheesy, and thus mocked it, making it into the meme we can observe here.
The themes of science, identity and rapidly growing technology are still very interesting and scary, they only grow more relevant with age. Good manga, but one of those extremely rare cases where I actually like the movies and tv series better 😅
You misinterpreted a lot of things in the movie: 1. The main concept isn't about the problem of "what it means to be a human", its about existence as an individual vs the collective existence. The first one is just a backdrop for the other... or actually one of the backdrops. 2. The Puppet Master didn't just form himself inside the network, he/she was created as a special invigilator AI for the MFA with a codename 2501, and then later he/she developed a self-awareness and escaped into the Network, becoming the Puppet Master. 3. The Puppet Master doesn't gripe with what makes a human, human, he gripes with the concept of survival by maintaining diversity. 4. Motoko isn't fully machine, she has her original brain inside her head - it's not just her soul in form of data. The concept of a human identity being able to exist without the brain inside an artificial neural network is a controversial subject in the world of GitS and that's partially the reason, for which Motoko's "merging" with the Puppet Master and her transference into the Network leaves us guessing if it really worked or not. Is that still her? Is it her together with whatever the Puppet Master was? Is it a broader collective of consciousnesses? Or is it someone or something else completely, while the major is really dead? Watch it again. It's really deeper then it seams - even after the 3rd time watching. But all in all, it's a good review and set of observations.
So I'm assuming the writer told you what the main concept of the movie is. What you listed is what you got out of it. The title says it all Ghost in the Shell, a big part of the concept in Ghost in the Shell, is about what it means to be human.
@@tinamoul it's more about defining a concept of personhood. We see from the beginning that Kusanagi is entirely cybernetic besides her brain. As a result, even though her body represents her biological sex, she appears to no longer have physical procreative urges and has therefore transcended sexual intercourse, so femaleness loses its meaning in that context. But she still has a drive to procreate, and the Puppet Master proposes a means to do that, as he has also developed a drive to procreate during his exploration of selfhood and finding meaning in his own existence. The result of this is tangentially explored in Innocence, even though Kusanagi has relatively little presence in the movie. This is what Haraway was getting at in her Cyborg Manifesto, and the character by the same name in Innocence sets up the context for Kusanagi's brief explanation of her experience since her disappearance in the first movie.
@@tinamoul That's part of it obviously, but there is a key disconnect in western audiences viewing an eastern film. Eastern morality and logic dictates collectivism > individualism in nearly all of it's facets of life. Shirow and Oshii were misunderstood by the self centered western audiences and that's why ScarJo's motoko is completely disgusting.
Thank you Chris, thank you for appreaciate this masterpiece and didn't dissmember it with awful and non-related/non-sense comments. I was very affraid of that. Oh god, what a relief.
"Gender identity" from walking around naked around others ... are you serious? Are the naked people at the nude beaches gender identifying as something they're not? How about animals that are always naked? Plenty of films show aliens naked and they're not worried about it either. Does the Terminator identify himself as a toaster?
invertedactuator mont "civilised" people wouldnt entertain the idea walking around naked in public. when nudity is used symbolically it often means that a character is disconnected from humanity and society. it is also used to symbolize savagery as with animals. at this point, makoto doesnt even consider herself as having a gender.
No, "gender identity" because people are able to change bodies and the antagonist is a sentient being with a woman's body and a man's voice, among other things. Enough with the triggering already, fuck.
invertedactuator well gender is a factor in that story with the whole "deep male voice puppetmaster" associating itself with bodies like motoko's and mercy from overwatch. it's the whole "AI'S aren't like us and don't give a shit" thing
I haven't seen the movie in a while, but I remember my problem with this movie being that while it does pose a lot of interesting philosophical questions that are well integrated into the plot and world, the dialogue about this philosophy feels horribly on the nose and forced. At times it feels like the director just lifted text from philosophy books and put it in to the character's mouths, so they speak to each other like they're reciting a formal debate. The second movie does this to an even greater extent IMO.
I loved Ghost in the shell so much, I used to go to sleep with it in the background. I learnt to program my vhs and tv on turning themselves off because of that
This is the very first full-length Anime movie I ever saw and it's still at the top in my mind (big mistake to see it FIRST, similar to having my first beer in Munich, after which all others paled in comparison). It led me to series like Cowboy Bebop, which is my favorite series ever. I agree with your points on Ghost in the Shell, that it's a phenomenal film that has inspired much of the sci-fi we currently enjoy. Side note: my wife and I were made aware of your channel through IHateEverything, and we've never looked back! Great videos, man. Your reviews (especially the Hilariosity ones) are awesome. Keep up the good work!
The most interesting thing about Makoto is was she ever really a person? Through this movie and the Stand Alone Complex (it takes place in an alternate universe but is very heavily inspired by the movie) we find out she doesn't even remember being alive in an organic body. Her consciousness has been copied and reformed so many times. Is she even alive? Was she a man or a woman? Does that even matter? Life, Death, rebirth. What does any of that mean to a machine? Is a soul the thing that is given to you or the thing you earn by realizing you are your own person. My head hurts. This movie is fantastic but I need a long nap every time I watch it.
She was a person but the full body prosthesis happened when she was a child. So she struggles with the idea that she was once fully human and has paranoid delusions that she was created in the same manner as the puppet master. She is among the most cyberized individuals to ever exist. Even most of her brain is artificial. This is why she was chosen by the puppet master. Because most of her brain is artificial she can properly merge her consciousness with the puppet master's because the puppet master is entirely artificial.
Great review! I'm glad to hear it took you a few viewings to really appreciate this film, because I watched it recently and felt I missed what makes most people love it. It was good, but I suspected much of it went over my head. I'll definitely give it another shot.
I agree A+ bro. This film is still one of the greatest films ever. As a writer this film had a powerful impact on me. I thought the story was prophetic in a way.
gits is a masterpiece and one of the most important scifi movies of all time. only ~90 minutes and so much depth its blowing me away every single time. the animation is gorgeous, the dialogue is incredible. the soumndtrack is incredible.. i love this film! and i dont like to use buzzwords like masterpiece
You’re absolutely wrong about the gender thing. She knows she’s a woman, one of the first scenes is her acknowledging her period (even tho the only human bit in her is the soul)
Im going to see it for the first time in a movie theater on saturday!! Because of the new movie coming out, my movie theater is releasing the original animation!! This will be epic, can't wait.
Chris, if you read this, don't let the negative comments about how you praise movies you grew up with get to you. I'm from the same generation as you and if movies like this, Akira, Ninja Scroll, Perfect Blue, etc. didn't exist I'm pretty sure anime would never have impacted such a broad audience as it has. People don't appreciate how difficult these types of movies were difficult to draw, market, and in the end be successful. There is a fucking reason why it has become a huge live action movie! Keep doing what you are doing, you are doing it correctly.
I'm from the same generation. It's kind of sad how we're not seeing this kind of animation anymore. A lot of the modern are all about big boobs and butts and over stylized concepts. Nothing thought provoking and philosophical.
I saw it yesterday. The movie was visually stunning and inspiring, also the question that movie asking us was really thought provoking, but the movie was too short to explore to get to question and I felt the movie just throw us the point of the movie by so many dialogs in some scenes.
Please please PLEASE do an analyzed video on either this or AKIRA! TY :) Also, if you haven't, you should check out Nerdwriter's video on Ghost in the Shell
One thing I like a lot about _Ghost in the Shell_ are these panoramic, dialogue-less city scapes and ambient shots which really sell you the city and time of this fictional universe. It's a whole different approach to worldbuilding compared to the exposition dumps and/or long narrations that western cinema uses to do the same thing. Comic theorist Scott McCloud talks about this difference in his books. While western comics prefer to go from action to action to propell a story forward, japanese comics like to go from location to location in order to give you this broad understanding of the place where things are happening.
Chris, I want you to know, the ONLY reason I watched this review is because of previously demonstrated passion for the movie, and well you are the one reviewing it. Your passion for this movie shines brightly and strongly. You passion is truly palpable. One of the reasons I love your reviews and your presentations. You are fearless when it comes to expressing genuine emotion, enthrallment, that childish wonder that draws us all to great films. Superb!! Ooooooh Dark City, in my top movies of all time, and so underrated. I am happy to assume you love it too.
motoko doesn't feel shame for being naked, you see that clearly she think's she is still human, but the reality is that she lost her ghost long time ago, it doesn't have to do with gender identity bullshit
Actually, being disconnected from her body as a "rented space" makes her ignore social conventions. I believe not in purpose but it's asexual. Gender identity is a subsequent question, as she could be in either Male or Female Shell.
Cool review Stuckmann, GiTS '95 is a good entry point for noobs to the franchise, it's also a different tone from the excellent GiTS: Stand Alone Complex series (1 & 2). GiTS '95 has tons of atmosphere, an eerie tone/score...while the great series gets more into the characters of Section 9 during their story arc episodes (Laughing Man) and police procedural eps. I'd say GiTS '95 (film), GiTS: SAC series, and GiTS: Innocence (film) are my faves of the franchise (and I think the 2017 movie will be a hybrid of those 3 GiTS entries)...I'm really looking forward to the live-action film unlike most GiTS die hards seem to be, and hope it's successful so we can see more stories from The Major & Section 9...plus I want live action versions of those adorable Tachikoma tank units helping out Section 9 dammit!
Amazing book. "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel." Kind of crazy though that kids nowadays are going to assume it was a bright and clear day... Bittersweet, in a way.
Race and ethnicity doesn't matter in the world of Ghost in the Shell. Major is a cyborg with a fully synthetic body, not a flesh and blood japanese woman.
xShineyxDiverx So just because a character is re imagined as a different race you won't watch it and call it trash without actually watching it... Sounds like there's some racist undertones there of you ask me
xShineyxDiverx The whitewash thing is a travesty, but a separate issue from whether or not the movie itself will suck. The movie will suck because live action anime airways sucks. The only decent live action anime was the first Matrix movie. Even live action anime from Japan sucks.
One of my favorite films of all time. My expectations for the live action film are extraordinarily low. I hope it stays true to the original, but film studios have a hard-on for dumbing things down to pander to larger audiences.
When i watched this movie, it was very graphic and the animataion was superb, but i felt there was a story lacking, It had these long filler phylosopgical elements that didn't really conect to me.
Ghost in the Shell was way ahead of its time when it was released. It still remains one of the most intellectually stimulating movies ever made.

Same. Always passed it up. Now I'm watching everything I can on it.
Okay
yeah, as a kid all i wanted to see was the gunplay and her cyberboobs. Now, being way more mature than I was, the story is outstanding!
Does 14 count as a kid? I just watched it, and personally, it felt special, it felt unique, despite being dragging a bit in the middle. 8/10 for me, dont know why everyone loves it so much, but was still pretty enjoyable.
@Thomas Berger ok better put this movie on my watch list for my 17th bday 😂
Logan and Ghost In The Shell take place in the same year

Rapperjosh13 sort of... GOTS-2029, LOGAN-2027
dandc2011 no it's 2029. I saw it on Saturday
So it's the year of the badass?
So Tigers will also be extinct in GITS?
Ghost in the Shell is my favorite anime film period. Took a science fiction class in college and wrote my final essay on it and it’s cultural impact.
Can i read it?
I'm serious.
Where can I watch
I want to read it , can I ???
Well yeah sure, I wanna read it too
Ghost in the shell anime existe as one of major movie of all time, it is blade runner level of greatness.
can u tell me if the series is worth watching too?
and do i need to watch the series to understand the second movie?

2001 a space Odyssey, blade runner and ghost in the shell are undeniably the greatest works of science fiction cinema ever to be created.
Let's face it. Even if the new movie is good, fans will still shit on it.
It'll be near impossible for any Hollywood adaptation to live up to those expectation.
They're been shitting on it since the first trailer simply because Scarlet Johansson isn't Asian.
The real question is if this will be another Dragon Ball Evolution where everything is bad, or if it'll just be fans being ridiculous.
Aya ya all you have to do is hear the on the nose dialogue and simple plot line from the trailer to know that it won't be a very good film
Aya ya The reason it doesn't look good now is because the new movie looks like a watered down version of the original.
Facts. Fanboys hate to be happy with anything but the original.

Just got it on 4K recently and gotta say, this must have been really influential. It feels like I've seen everything in it already from movies and shows that came out way after 1995
Matrix for example
Maybe I'm biased but the 90s are the best movies also before CGI like when a car blew up that s*** really blew up
I love this film in every aspect, but I am aways in awe of how amazing the art styles were blended and all the subtle details, reflections, lighting etc. they captured so accurately. Many modern live action films don't even do as good a job.
Holy fuck an A+?!! This is a must watch for me now. Gotta get on this and Akira.
King of Wakanda same
King of Wakanda Akira is overrated, GitS is my favorite film of all time but it is very flawed.
yes, its a masterpiece.
Other way around, Ghost In The Shell is overrated and a bit of a William H Gibson rip-off, Akira is a better film, better animated, based on a better Manga and a lot more original.
Akira is definitely worth it.
I also recommend Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, the TV series, which is some of the (if not THE) most intelligent thing made for TV, ever. Two seasons exist.
Currently watching it for the first time, I'm on episode 23. Best TV show I have ever watched.
Isn't it, though? For me, it's my second favorite anime right behind Cowboy Bebop. How can you not adore Mary McGlynn as the Major and Crispan Freeman as Togusa?
second season is so good tho... the storyline overall is grest
Is it the only ghost in the Shell series worth watching?
"That's the market gun fight from the beginning with the Watermelons!" "Morpheus has Batou's glasses!" "They plug themselves in from the back of their necks to enter a computer world!" "The girl who played Trinity could totally play Motoko in a GITS movie, whey didn't they just make that?!"
My dad and I enjoyed the hell out of the Matrix, and to this day it's still one of my favorite films.
One thing i like about the french version , is that Togusa have the voice of Morpheus , the official Laurence Fishburn voice actor !
Ghost in the shell was what got me into the anime culture.
thats cool. it was death note for me.
I'm 99% sure that the upcoming movie will be the new definition of 'style over substance'!
Or, you know, just another shitty Hollywood adaptation. The 'future' looks too overblown, and we already know the script is hot garbage.
Damn you were spot on.
lol
Wishful thinking to believe it would have even a shred of style that 1995 has. Apparently the practical effects are nice, but Im never going to watch it.
@@evangelionaddict8212 I'd say it's worth watching for the practical effects because they are impressive, but brace for the underwhelming story.
It's funny I didn't know a thing about this series until I saw the trailer for the live-action film. I sought it out and loved it, and now I get the feeling I'm not gonna like the live action version. 😅
Dormammu same
Dormammu I've come to bargain
Dormammu you weren't going to like the live action one even if you didn't watch the original anime film
even if the live action movie is shit, you gotta be grateful that it gave so much attention to this masterful series. Many ppl would've never heard of it, if it wasn't for the new hollywood movie
come on be optimisticv for the anime- japanese cartoon franchise you just love.
watch review. evangelion.
Not the rebuilds, the original NGE
GoogIe Play Oh man. Review that and spread the virus to others.
End of Evangelion.
It'll take like 7 years for him to figure out the ending
He'll review NGE when Hollywood makes a live action Remake
So that's it, huh? We some kind of Ghost in the Shell?
Are you proud of yourself?
Jim Moriarty these stupid suicide squad jokes r out of trend buddy
I'm 'retro'. And very proud.
THIS IS THE MAJOR! SHE'S GOT MY BACK! I WOULD ADVISE NOT GETTING TRAPPED IN THE JNET! THE NET TRAPS THE SOULS OF ITS VICTIMS!
66 likes in 3 hours for this?! What a depressing world Im living in.
Better anime? This or Shrek?
Jack A dude, are you seriously asking that?
it is obviously shrek
Jack A Shrek in a Shell
Jack A ghost in the shrek
Jack A shell shrekd
Neither. Cory in the House.
So that's it huh? We're some kind of ghost in the shell
So that's it huh? We're some kind of stale meme?
Whiplash95 Good job stealing a previous comment.Great original comedian
Whiplash95 These never get old for me
DudeGuyBro this is a meme. the person you saw commenting that before wasn't original either. get out please.
Whiplash95, I already commented that, yet I got less likes! ..the internet truly does work in strange and mysterious ways...
That's what makes it one of the best all around movies ever made, IMO.
omg my father is a cyborg, where ever we go he get completely naked
MR. G wtf 😂
Suddenly Alabama
You ok dude ?
I saw the movie once and was really astounded how serious the story was. Epic science fiction, worth seeing over and over.
This epitomizes why you're the best movie reviewer on RUclips, Chris!
Thank you Chris! This is the most comprehensive review of this film I have ever seen. I am going to recommend this review to everyone I can.
Yoo man I just want to say I'll been watching your videos for the past couple of months and you really have made me look at film in a whole new way, definitely my favorite film critics right now, Ebert would be proud bro
Ghost In The Shell is, without a doubt, my favourite anime of all time. Especially the Stand Alone Complex series 😊
The series "Stand Alone Complex" for me was horrible, I think it focuses more in the action and leaves out all the thought provoking and aesthetics the original movie had.
are you serious? standalone complex is the best thing in the franchise. it's better and more focused than the manga and it explores a lot of things.
Brian Healy I kinda felt like the original feels insubstantial since it's just sorta the middle of the story and barely has a conclusion.
Brian Healy i watched only the first and second one and loved them almost equally. The first one a bit more
The manga and Stand Alone Complex/2nd Gig series were much more sexual with Motoko and I found it even more interesting to see how she can behave extremely sexually, yet still has that disconnect to humanity.
You mean the original manga?
I watched this a few weeks ago because you mentioned it in another review and I really loved it. Exactly what you said - it just kind of drifts to a close with lots of open ends, but it does it so beautifully and it is so satisfying that I didn't mind at all. The music is just haunting and god those frames, I'm getting flashes of stills just thinking about it. Amazing movie, thank you for the recommendation Chris :)
Looking forward to the next video! No-one ever talks about the sequel, which I absolutely love, so you just got yourself a new subscriber :D
Prediction before watching video: I love ghost in the shell I grew up with it I would even make short films with my friends about it and they were horrible
Well you were two-thirds right. xD
Whiplash95 That's hilarious. 😂
True passion makes us all predictable :)
+StupidMarioBros1Fan He's waiting for the review of the Scarlett Johanson movie to announce the "bad" film he made with his friends.
I was completely BLOWN AWAY, when I first saw it. Still am.
My daughters are really into manga but they're still a bit too young for this one.
Can't wait to watch it with them both and watch their reactions :)
Ghost in the shell is a Masterpiece.
The upcoming live action doesn't look good.
Kal-El fan 49 it looks literally exactly the same as the anime...
Mantas Pavardė the plot is VERY different
Mantas Pavardė the plot and the lore sure is not
Kal-El fan 49 the production quality as well as the white-wash are both red flags for me
Shiri Gaming it's not whitewashed the characters who are white in the movie were actually white in the series plus have you noticed how the characters of any anime are western appealing anyway so it shouldn't matter unless the movie is a piece of shit who plays the characters shouldn't really depict your opinion on if the movie sucks or not give it a chance everything deserves one even if it'll suck
Hey Chris, you've become my new favorite youtube movie critic. I truly enjoy your reviews, knowledge and passion for films. Please keep doing your reviews.
One of the best reviews of a film I have seen in a while.consise, to the point passionate and deep on all levels.many thanks for that.
I already know what he's gona say about the new Ghost and the Shell. It's not Dragonbullshit Evolution but it doesn't live up to its source material. Not that it has to live up to it but not perfectly crafted like the animated version. And give it a B-.
well....u were wrong
SSBlue Bubbims he's talking about the movie with scarlett johansson
SSBlue Bubbims he's talking about the upcoming live action one with Scarlett Johanson
SSBlue Bubbims he is talking about the upcoming movie!!!
Nah, he's gonna be "disappointed" in it, give it a C-, and a few months later mention it and act like he always hated it.
It's a great movie, and you know I watched that movie 5 times a week at minimum all the way until I grew up to be a big ol' boy."
-Chris, Probably.
Chris, this is my favorite review from you so far and I think it's one of the best reviews of this movie! Thank you!
Is there a version with both good subbing and proper video?
the new one looks so much worse.
live action or the 2.0 remaster?
wreckid72 live action ☺
The trailer reminds me of a 23 ronin. I think it's gonna be a flop. Since ScaJo is in it, it will be watched; however, I don't think it can make enough money to cover the production value alone.
to say it doesn't look as outrageously incredible as the GitS 1995 is not a harsh criticism at all.
+Renato Marques
I agree. I'm not a diehard GitS fan but the live action one looks like it's been a copy and paste job of other sci-fi films. It doesn't have the conviction of the original anime series. That being said, I guess we'll see how it will do soon enough.
How did the ghost greet the shell? He said Shello
After much thought and consideration i decided not to laugh at this. Your effort is noted, but do try harder next time. Thank you and have a nice day.
Jonah Delgado lmao
Jonah Delgado 😂😂
Dennis Caouki go home
Dennis Caouki Get the SHELL OUTTA HERE!!!!😂😂😂
Tell that to Zod's snapped neck
never let this meme die
What meme is it?
Apparently, Mr. Stuckmann here was on Twitter and pitched some alternative dialogue for Batman v. Superman, and Batman telling Superman, "Tell that to Zod's snapped neck." was among the dialogue Stuckmann wrote. Some people found this cheesy, and thus mocked it, making it into the meme we can observe here.
Anyone notice this anime and Logan take place in the same year 2029?
Hey Chris, can we get an Akira review?
Yeah but 3 years later
My favourite anime of all time
The themes of science, identity and rapidly growing technology are still very interesting and scary, they only grow more relevant with age.
Good manga, but one of those extremely rare cases where I actually like the movies and tv series better 😅
You misinterpreted a lot of things in the movie:
ImaginationUser tree is TY TY tytrtepttrtrittur
Does the Terminator identify himself as a toaster?
invertedactuator mont "civilised" people wouldnt entertain the idea walking around naked in public. when nudity is used symbolically it often means that a character is disconnected from humanity and society. it is also used to symbolize savagery as with animals. at this point, makoto doesnt even consider herself as having a gender.
alpaca needs to stay on reddit lmfao
damn
I’m a fan of Japanese anime and manga I love how they handle characters and storytelling
Perfect Blue review?
He did one way back when.
I founded it, thank you!
i hereby resurrect this thread. welcome back.
Takes place in 2029?!?! Logan / Ghost in the Shell crossover confirmed!
Great review! I'm glad to hear it took you a few viewings to really appreciate this film, because I watched it recently and felt I missed what makes most people love it. It was good, but I suspected much of it went over my head. I'll definitely give it another shot.
This is your best review Chris. Well done.
It's a good anime movie but it still doesn't beat Shrek. 👌😩
If the live action film captures 25% of the anime I'll be happy. Especially the puppet master aspect.
"Ghost in the Shell" didn't introduce the West to Anime... that honor has to go to "Akira"!
Neither Akira nor Ghost in the Shell did that single-handed. Both were extremely influential in that regard.
I agree A+ bro. This film is still one of the greatest films ever. As a writer this film had a powerful impact on me. I thought the story was prophetic in a way.
gits is a masterpiece and one of the most important scifi movies of all time. only ~90 minutes and so much depth its blowing me away every single time. the animation is gorgeous, the dialogue is incredible. the soumndtrack is incredible.. i love this film! and i dont like to use buzzwords like masterpiece
overrated
u r best RUclips reviewer!!! love all our videos!!
Poonam Chaturvedi noo he sucks
You’re absolutely wrong about the gender thing. She knows she’s a woman, one of the first scenes is her acknowledging her period (even tho the only human bit in her is the soul)
lol, i love how angry you get whenever there's even the slightest mention of Dragon Ball Evolution.
I needed an explanation of this movie it always confused the fu** outta me thanks!!
Please please PLEASE do an analyzed video on either this or AKIRA! TY :)
Also, if you haven't, you should check out Nerdwriter's video on Ghost in the Shell
Ushi thank you!
Yeah, I've never had any "gender politics" cross my radar when watching this film.
Roger and +1!
Actually, being disconnected from her body as a "rented space" makes her ignore social conventions. I believe not in purpose but it's asexual. Gender identity is a subsequent question, as she could be in either Male or Female Shell.
GOAT IN THE MAIL
if you are not doing SAC, especially SAC2, you are doing the series no justice
the euphoric feeling comes from the breathtaking beauty of the artwork
Usually i dont like your reviews, but this is one of the good ones. Good job.
Who else feels like the new ghost in the shell is gonna suck?
all that you praise in this review is missing in the 2017 hollywood movie.
yet you rate the new one A-.. how?
Review Kill Bill
Ovrstylised, overrated, there no need for a review now.
anus you’re overrated
The dread in Chris' voice when he said that it's possible that the new movie could end up like DB Evolution LOL!!!!!
Ah, Ghost in the Shell, aka Neuromancer the Anime.
Yep. _This._
It's a pity to me that most have never read Neuromancer
Amazing book.
"The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel."
Kind of crazy though that kids nowadays are going to assume it was a bright and clear day... Bittersweet, in a way.
so much misinformation in this review... in what universe does major lead sector 9?? what is the function of the old guy then??
I adore Ghost in the Shell. The whitewashed trash coming out this month I have no time for.
xShineyxDiverx I really think. the characters were alwaaaasys white
Sounds like there's some racist undertones there of you ask me
xShineyxDiverx
The whitewash thing is a travesty, but a separate issue from whether or not the movie itself will suck.
The movie will suck because live action anime airways sucks. The only decent live action anime was the first Matrix movie. Even live action anime from Japan sucks.
xShineyxDiverx The characters were white
Chris, what do you think of 1.5? i was very disappointed in it and just did not get why they changed it.
You might really like the tv show then. Less nudity, more story, and lots of action.
is that series canon?
I've been waiting to fin this comment. Spot on.
