Glad i'm not the only one who still has Phantom Menace figures mint in package...holding out for that day when the action figure market spikes, as well as interest in Phantom Menace toys....we are truly the dreamers of the dreams. Nice review.
***** I don't like to keep figures in package (mostly), because I feel that it kinda negates the purpose. If I'm going to get a cool Darth Vader toy, I'm going to put it with the rest of the figures. It just feels better to me.
Cheetos Hmm mhmmm....Really though? I only remember Duel of The Fates and Battle of The Heroes. Can you direct me to some other scores from the prequels that were really good?

Phantom Menace was the first date I had with a gentleman who would be my husband someday 😊. Back then a lot of people loved it because we had been Star Wars starved for like 17 years. The Maul fight scene is still one of my favorites.
I love that George Lucas was innovative enough to not repeat what was good and he pushed the envelope with the prequels and the special effects still hold up plus they were ground breaking for the end of the 90's era
ShinbrigTV "I'm not going to kill you. But that doesn't mean I have to save you." Yeah, Batman killed him. Him and Harvey Dent... and a few of those guys in the tunnel chase.
I wasn't a big fan of The Phantom Menace as a whole, but i really have to say that John Williams outdid himself with the soundtrack. Especially the Duel of the fates is one of my all time favorite movie soundtracks and serves its purpose quite well
The droids theme song is also some stellar stuff, I still have that oppressive melody get stuck in my head every now and again. It's almost as intense as the Imperial March in that respect, though not as iconic.

I liked that the whole plot led to Palpatine/sidious getting to power. So the ”win” in the end is really a loss. And that Anakin loses his mother and the one jedi believing in him - QiGon. The start of his downfall. I also love Yodas ”fear lead to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering”. And Anakin is also full of fear which leads to his downfall into darkness.
Qui gon is clearly the main character of the phantom menace. He's also the only good jedi presentend in the prequels because he doesn't follow what the jedi orders tells him to do but instead does what he thinks is right. Qui gon is a far more interesting character then what he gets credits for.
13:08 "Can you maybe just send a *larger* ship!?" "No. We cannot. We're very busy" "... *All* of the Jedi are busy!?" "Yes. Important Jedi Business we have. Sit here on cushions we must." "... I'm really doing all the work, aren't I?"
Hannah Pilkey you just reminded me that I haven’t watched any of HISHE’s Star Wars episodes in a while, and now I’m gonna go watch them. Thank you my friend.
“Nothing much is going on” in the lightsaber battle at the end... I actually always loved the subtle touch that obi wan’s lightsaber fires a split second before Quigon’s (and before the energy doors deactivate) implying his presient awareness has surpassed his master, a few moments before his master dies.
@@MrZackavelli every millisecond of a digital effect is meticulously crafted. Then you get the sound effect in there... It's impossible that there wasn't a plan going on there. Lucas is crazy about effects and editing
@@vgrepairs have you watched the behind the scenes documentary of Phantom menace? he is super casual about so many parts, its crazy how inconstant he is. He gets focused on weird stuff man.
I think the politics makes the world a lot more realistic and relateable which is great. However, think they should've toned it down and not have so many "sit around and talk" scenes.
@@okayge_ I think the sit around and talk scenes could've worked if the dialouge actually worked. Just look at the first four seasons of Game Of Thrones
@@imheretosayyo3064 Its war, there are always politics in war. I feel like they could of used the jedi council to speak about the senate shit, since there also tense about Naboo as well. Isnt that we want to see Jedi? Like idk why they were on the backburner for so long and instead we got so much shit about bureaucracy treaties in the most stale way possible. Its just so dumb
It was like the very political ww1, which wasn’t good vs evil, but more of an empire vs empire. The original trilogy is like ww2, where it’s actually a battle of good vs evil.
Look up "what if the prequels were good". I forget who does it...but he has a video for each film & what should have been done. Interesting shit. He says that Obi Wan should have been main character throughout with Anakin as supporting role. Obi Wan main character. Maul as main villain not getting killed until episode 3...that alone fixes a bunch.
kingmatt2563 Sure he is. Well...Darth Maul with character development and dialog is. Darth Maul as shown in the film is lame...great fight...lame character (He has more dialog in the trailer than the actual film). He was fleshed out in Clone Wars cartoon and Rebels...he's actually quite a good character. If you watch Clone Wars...then RotS, the Grevious fight hold more weight too as he's giving a ton of development in the cartoon. So you're like, "finally, they take Grevious out" instead of, "who the hell is this guy?" Be it Maul or another Sith...I think if the villain got away in Episode 1, this would hold more weight when he is killed in episode 3...especially as Obi Wan finally kills the guy who killed his master...this is a thread that would loom over episode 2 and part of 3...that Obi Wan feels guilty about losing his master.
FACE The Prequels were centred around Anakins development not really Obi Wans. The first movie was about Obi Wan becoming an independent Jedi. But it shows him as loyal to the force and his master, hence why he kills Maul at the end. The film introduced us to the master, but the prequels are meant to be about the apprentice. Of course Obi Wan was one of the only well acted and scripted characters in the prequels.
+kingmatt2563 Right...I'm saying that if there was more of a focus on Obi Wan it would be a good thing. Also if Anakin started off as an adult...we didn't need kid Anakin.
"The Phantom Menace" it's more about Senator Palpatine. Through out his scenes he still is doing his stuff, Making the Trade Federation go at war with Naboo. His attempt to go fron Senator to Chancellor. I had just watched this recently and the Line that he tell the Queen "This is when Chancellor Valorum's strength with disapear" "Then they will elect a new Chancellor one that will not let this Tragedy continue" All of the actor's are unknown of what his actions are, everyone thinks he will do what is best for the Republic. He finally becomes Chancellor then becoming the Emperor in Episode 3 and turning the Republic into the Galactic Empire. The Phantom Menace's title is more about Palpatine. Oh "Agree with you the couuncil dose" the rank of Jedi Master not referencing training the boy.
The left to right thing in the podrace is clearly intentional, just like how Peter Jackson decided to have Frodo and Sam go from left to right in almost every scene. The series of whip pans in a row does feel a bit monotonous though, I remember the section that just has several pans in a row.
@@captaincrunch7126 it’s the same model regardless, moving a virtual camera is actually fairly simply. I think it’s a creative choice, personally. They had Industrial Light and Magic making that scene- they aren’t lazy. They made the shots George envisioned for the most part I’m sure and maybe cane up with some others.
Palpatine's plot wasn't to get Amidala to sign a peace treaty. He knew she would never sign it. His plan was to get elected as chancellor by making the galactic senate feel sympathy for Naboo. The peace treaty from the Trade Federation was just a prop to make the situation look more convincing rather than an elaborate plan staged by the future emperor and sith lord.
Snoke was Mauled. Disney took a page out of The Phantom Menaces book and it not only cut Snoke in half, it cut the fanbase in half too. Thanks Rian Johnson!
I agree... I love Kylo Ren. It's a shame with Snoke because there was this huge mystery behind him and even though we may get an answer in episode 9... no one cares anymore because he's dead.
I thought the scenes with him were the most intimidating thing I’ve seen in a theater. The way he stands over everyone and his sudden shifts in mood were terrifying. Rain wrote and directed this character extremely well regardless of wether or not he died. Especially Kylo ren, who was made a more interesting character because of it. But I don’t know what jj abrams can do for him what rain did. That’s what concerns me because I did not like the force awakens.
Every Star Wars Phantom Manace review says that everything that's been said about Jar Jar has been said already. Paradoxically, makes it not as talked about topic as taxation of trade routes.
Maybe because the taxation of trade routes is mentioned like once? There are no scenes that extensively go over the details of it. It's simple. New taxes angered the greedy bad guys, and they're blockading Naboo as a form of protest. I was 5 years old when I saw this in theaters, and I understood all of it.
@@MrZackavelli he’s saying the political aspects are talked about more than jar jar when you’d expect it to be the other way around. yeah the taxation of trade routes IS only mentioned once which is why it’s weird people talk about it when reviewing/critiquing the movie
fun fact: back in '99, my dad ordered pizza hut, it came with a star wars fridge magnet, it had darth maul on it. my mom threw out the magnet instantly, her reason.... "darth maul looks like the devil, and i dont want that in my house" aaaaaannndddd thats why i didnt bother watching any of the star wars movies, my favourite character (before i had even seen the movie) was judge by my mom, and if i couldnt enjoy darth maul, i didnt wanna watch them. if i could go back to when i was 4, and tell my mom "hes an alien, not a hell spawn -_-" im sure it would have changed her thoughts on it
LOL the funny part is, we didnt go to church or anything XD my mom was fine with halloween and such, but that one time she thought it was a bad omen XD
THE PHANTOM MENACE IS THE GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME, HOW DARE YOU! POD RACING! DARTH MAUL! OUTSTANDING ACTING! EMOTION! A++ 110/100 IT BREAKS THE SCALE!!!
LoN3wOlF5tudi0s Maul had flair and style. He had superior bad ass skill and a lot of potential. He was the best thing in that movie to me, just extremely under utilized. And he certainly shouldn't have been killed in favor of Count Dooku. Not that Dooku wasn't a good character, but he was no Maul.
Yobachi2007 All he had going for him was looks and fighting style. He was easily the most shallow character in that movie, and yes, he could've been great. Killing him off was stupid, but it's not like he had any character anyway. What if they kept him in the next two movies? Would he still just be some guy we know nothing about who the heroes fight at the end?
LoN3wOlF5tudi0s "All he had going for him was looks and fighting style" Yeah, and that's plenty, especially compared to the cardboard we were told to think of as characters in the rest of the prequels. If he would have actually been built out, instead of having two lines then getting murder in a ridiculous manner in his 4th time on screen, he had potential to be a lot more. He was shallow because he wasn't used. And still wasn't the most shallow. That comment is ridiculous. We don't know what his personality was like. He never got to show it because he didn't interact with anybody, and had only two lines of dialogue.
11:31 OBJECTION Chris! The pod racing scene that has takes where they move from “left to right” is actually the one good thing George Lucas does right consistently with his directing and that is a little know thing called, RESPECTING SCREEN DIRECTION! The 180 degree rule! The idea that if you cut to a different take beyond where our subjects exist (in most cases scenes of dialogue between two people) the shot is weird! Forgetting the fact that moving from left to right is an ideal way to have these vehicles move since we as people in the western world naturally track things from left to right (just look at a book) but also it is brilliant way to shot and cut together an action scene because here the moving of from “left to right” demonstrates PROGRESSION as Anikin our hero in this case has to catch up to Subulba our villain who cheated and has the lead. You of all people who reviews and “analyzes” movies should know this and honestly feels like a cheep way to criticize what is arguable one of the two best scenes in this movie! The other being the fight with Qui Gon, Obi Wan vs Maul. Believe me I have no love for the Phantom Menace myself but out of all the pointless criticisms that people have had about this movie over the years, this is one of the biggest.
That's for sure not the 180° rule. I understand on the surface thinking that but no that's not it when tracking a race like this you should have shot that rotate from on top of and pan to the right and than maybe the pod pulls away from camera. Or maybe you let the camera Track alongside the pod until it dissapear under a set of rocks. You don't need consistently set the camera in a single spot let the pod fly by it and track it like humans eyes watching race cars. A it's repetitive and B it's boring. The most boring part of actual race car races is that moment the fly by you because it's the moment your eyes can't really see what's going on like they can when the cars are further away and appear to be going slower(with the exception of the sound of the cars flying by which people love) watch well done racing movies and realize how often they are zoomed in and here's a pov than one from under the car than one from the infield and a couple sky views. This sequence is a mess of just constant cuts for a 3 second left to right watch the pods fly bye.
To clarify the 180° rule is a rule of filming characters talking or fighting. As in always show the same side of their face during the scene to not confuse the audience and make them lose spacial awareness and their minds have to readjust to who is left to right over again. Where a scene like pod racing where there is no need to understand that spatial awareness because it's rapid scenery changing and the audience clearly identifies one thing in front of another thing is the flow of logic and just track which way the pods are going. The only way you could mess up the human brain in this scenario would be to have the pods coming towards the camera as in seeming like they have now turned around and driving the course in reverse. You could easily do a shot thst shows the left side of the pods and still be able to track the logical flow of the pods without breaking the 180° rule.
But the podracers aren’t predisposed to face against each other in the scene. They’re moving in the same direction so they act virtually as one line of motion, meaning you can film it from any angle you want
Liam Neeson actually played Qui-Gon very subtly. He was mischievous, cunning and was a renegade by having enough wisdom to not directly follow the Jedi Council's orders.
But those things are just character traits, that have nothing to do with how he played the character. Or rather how the actor was directed to play the character.
Hey whazzup! Plinkka! Where's my pizza roll man! I need some shit right there! Mail you if you can man! I need to refresh this boring "The Phantom Menace" out of my memory! 😆
Harry Plinkett i mean how much more could possibly fuck up the entire back story to star wars. and wile my son eventally hanged himself in the bathroom of the gas station the unforzunate reallyty of the starwar-preqouels is that they'll be around. ...forever ... they will never go away
I'm one of those rare people who watched the first six Star Wars movies in chronological narrative order, starting with The Phantom Menace, with absolutely NO idea about the plot going in. And I really liked the prequels! I found them much more mature, grounded, and complex than the originals. I remember being shocked to my CORE while watching Revenge of the Sith when I realized that the kindly, grandfatherly Senator Palpatine was the evil Sith Lord who had been causing so much chaos. The scenes between Anakin and Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith were GOLD . . . and that ending, with Anakin killing Mace Windu, and Palpatine issuing Order 66, and Obi-Wan trying to kill Anakin, and Anakin being burned to a crisp on Mustafar . . . it shocked me and horrified me and blew me away in the best way possible. Even the originals (which I watched after the prequels) didn't have that effect. They just seemed so simple and juvenile after all the dramatic intrigues and plot twists of the prequels. And God bless Ian McDiarmid for playing Palpatine so wonderfully . . . even as an unsophisticated 12-year-old, he was the BEST character in the prequels. Even Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan couldn't hold a candle to Ian's out-of-this-world performance.
+Stephen Gontis I am not saying they were terrible films. They were far from that. I'm just saying they were really disappointing. Their execution just wasn't up to par with the LOTR films. I actually enjoy them for what they are.
Episode 1 gives so much more depth to a world that existed before the originals, I don’t understand why people hate them, like what do they want, art has no correct answer
@@hippiecheezburger5457 bad dialogue, bad acting, boring plot, Jar Jar and bad cgi atleast those are the reasons why I don't like them and like 90% of the people who watched the movie.
@@kevinbl7821 No it wasn't. There's a reason Jeremy from Cinemasins took a few sins off for it in his videos. It's original, has cool sound effects, and gives you a taste of Anakin's future talent as a pilot.
In fact, now that I think about it, the first chase scene in Terminator 2 always had the camera on the left side the whole time, but that was still a kick ass scene, so what about that?? Huh??
I find the politics to be quite interesting and intriguing even. The whole story of the PT is how Palpatine used politics to plunge everything into a state of war and chaos and then take control once the time was right. In TPM he created a crisis on Naboo to make the incumbent chancellor look weak then take his place once he kicks him out. In AOTC he influenced the Senate to approve the creation of the clones and started a war to distract the Jedi from his true plans. Then finally ROTS is where Palpatine makes his deadly move activating Order 66 making the clone troopers turn on the Jedi. It's brilliant honestly. I'm surprised that reviewers like Chris didn't catch that.
Younger Stuckman has points, but his "ranty" tone doesn't do it for me. Maybe I'm older now so watching videos, or listening to older fans just dredge on abt how much they hate something to no end is tiresome. Glad he's mostly changed the way he reviews movies now.
@@ahdamn6287 Agree. I remember when I first watched this and his whole rant about the podrace where he says the camera just pans from left to right. And I'm like dude most race tracks follow a loop over and over until the laps are finished. And it's not like it used that same camera shot repeatedly. It feels really nitpicky no doubt.
@@ahdamn6287I found Stuckmann's channel in early 2019 so like 4 and a half years ago, came back to this review video today and yeah it's kinda strange, he's still great at what he does but his tone and everything just doesn't hit like it did back then.
And that is why star wars the clone wars inhibitor chip idea is so dumb, the clones were never meant to be normal humans they always had loyalty to palpatine and knew their purpose from day 1, the clone wars series falsely humanizes the clones when that was never georges original intention for them, they were supposed to be soldiers only almost robotic like and then they came up with the chip idea which just turns them into braindead zombies at the flip of a switch its dumb
Then break the rule like The Bourne Identity did! (or Tokyo Story with 360 degree rule) Also, isn't 180 degree role only used when MULTIPLE characters talk/interact with each other?
廖浩 Yes, you can break the rule, but it would have been good for Chris to explain that. I don't think he knows about the 180 degree rule. And it's a rule that's always used, not just for multiple characters that are talking with each other.
+George Wroe Check out his review for The Bourne Identity where he actually explains what 180 degree rule means. Or a Cinefix Video named "Top 10 Rule Breaking Films" to see 360 degree rule I mentioned.
I've honestly seen way worse from children actors but I wouldn't say his performance was "good" in any regard. However, considering how insane Lucas is he did an okay job I think
Amazing job? You need to switch drug dealers because your current guy is lacing your shit with a dangerous hallucinogenic. Blame the bad performance on Lucas if you want but this was one of the worse performances by a child actor in the history of film. This kid and Jar Jar alone make this movie unwatchable. But don't feel like I am just picking on those characters and actors. The rest of them sucked as well.
I remember watching this in theatres as a kid and have to agree with you that the diplomatic parts went over my head. When I watched this movie as an adult now, I enjoyed it 10x more. Star Wars has always been about a power struggle and the politics made sense in my eyes. But everyone's entitled to their opinions
Yeah I was 5 when I first saw the phantom Menace, somehow the politics impacted me because now I love labor history, working class politics, Malcolm X, Cesar Chavez, Jill stein, socialism lol.
I wouldn't say I'm a prequels fangirl, like I'm not a massive fan, but I don't hate them… I love Qui-Gon, I love Darth Maul, I love Ep III Obi-Wan, I love Mace Windu, I love the Pod Race, I love Dooku/Tyranus, but I loathe Jar-Jar etc.
RedTeamReview I feel like I'm stalking you around youtube, but you just keep commenting on videos I watch xD Also EPISODE 4 REVIEW PLEASE. *whip noise*
I don’t care what anyone says about this movie, I’ll never forget my dad taking me to Taco Bell and getting those little character chips and then watching the movie with him and my sisters as a little 6 yr old kid. Happiest times of my life
I call Darth Maul the "Boba Fett" of the prequels, he looks great, he's a badass, and he doesn't get that much dialogue. I know the difference is that Boba Fett was't a main antagonist but I think they both leave the same impact on people, we wanted to see more of them but we love them for the amount of time we see them
Never saw it that way, honestly. But side by side, Maul is a little more badass than Fett, especially with the EU lore mixed in. Plus we did get an awesome Maul in The Clone Wars tv series.
+Jonathan Gonzales yeah, Maul looked great but what in the movie ever suggests that Darth Maul is a badass? Darth Vader's a badass. Asajj Ventress is a badass. Maul is just a wannabe sith lord.
Fun Fact: When Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi are fighting Darth Maul, there's a part during the begining of the fight when Obi-Wan blocks with his lightsaber, but he is not blocking anything. I just thought that was interesting.
11:27 has this guy ever been to an auto race of any kind? the audience watches the race on just the outside of the track, people are watching the cars go from left to right, it's almost as if Lucas wanted the audience to view the scene the way the crowd is watching the race. what an odd thing to do.
Hear me out, I can already tell the Grades for the rest of the star wars films that Chris Stuckmann is going to use. Ep.1 = C- Ep.2 = D Ep.3 = B- Ep.4 = A Ep.5 = A+ Ep.6 = A-
You forgot something, why the hell did they do something with a prophecy of bringing balance to the force, WHY?! What happens if the force is "unbalanced", what changes if it is balanced, who did it, WHY DOES IT EXISTS?!
Yeah, since because they've had "peace for a thousand generations" why do they need to bring balance? The reason is because Lucas needed another clumsy plot device instead of coming up with something that made sense to forward the story along.
i always thought the unbalance was in the Jedi's favour, there were many Jedi and no Sith. Anakin kills many of the jedi so there are two jedi left, Obi Wan and Luke, and two sith, Emperor and Vader.
As George Lucas has stated in the past... using the "dark side" of the Force is a perversion that corrupts the force... so to bring the Force back into balance would be to remove that source of corruption/evil. Reply
But sorry, what is wrong or bad when the force is unbalanced in the light side, I mean that's not hurting somebody or doing something bad, why can't it be like unbalanced, because if it's balanced there's a way bigger potential of becoming unbalanced in the dark side!
The more light side force users the better... the force is only out of balance when there are dark side users corrupting it and using it for evil. As long as there is even 1 dark side user manipulating the force for evil and twisting it then the force is out of balance, once there is no twisting and using of the force for evil then it is back in balance. It is less of a balance in the sense of a scale (even weights on each side) but more a balance like the health of a human body... if you are ill or in bad health then your body is "out of balance", but if everything is running perfectly and as it should then your body is "in balance". If you see what I mean...
I actually enjoy the prequels (not as much as the originals obviously). I understand there are flaws in Phantom Menace like Obi Wan’s lack of a real personality, the terribly outdated CGI, and so on so forth, but I still have a good time with the pod race and and the battle scenes. Also I still very much hate Jar Jar Binks, but I’m a part of the 0.01% that can actually tolerate him.
why do the Jedi need balance to the Force? There's only 2 Sith and loads of Jedi. Anakin does bring balance to the Force, in the original trilogy there are 2 Siths and 2 Jedis, so what did the Jedis think bringing balance would mean?
As George Lucas has stated in the past... using the "dark side" of the Force is a perversion that corrupts the force... so to bring the Force back into balance would be to remove that source of corruption/evil.
6:15 [about Jar-Jar Binks] "Now look, every single thing that could have been said about this 'thing' has been said already" .... except that he might be a hidden Sith Master who is posing as an idiot while manipulating everyone to his own evil ends....
+ixtl guul That theory is the ridicilous attempt to excuse one of the biggest cinematic disappointments in history. And like you said: Lucas does not have that much subtlety.
+ixtl guul Or he might just be an idiot that is so bad as a character and creation that some fans are desperately trying to explain away and excuse him. LOL do you honestly believe after watching the prequels that George Lucas had some master plan for a moron who was only created so the kids could wear their parents down into buying them everything Jar Jar. cha ching.
Mate. I'm born in 03. I really enjoyed watching it again. I wasn't a star wars kid. Got into it at around 13. For some reason I WAY prefer the prequels. I love the politics. The treaties. I love how it all slowly sets everything up for the originals.
I watched Episode I and loved it. I was 8 years old at the time. I loved the politics of it... That was meant to be one of the 2 main points of the film (beside introducing Anakin and dropping hints as to why he is a risk). What exactly was to be expected from a film that detailed the rise of the Emperor? And the complaint that there was no main character is just inane. Movies don't need 'a' main character; they can have many. That was one of the things I liked about the film. It gave such a balanced treatment to all of the central protagonists, and managed to keep the two Sith very mysterious. The film did a good job here, contrary to your lament. As for the complaint about the emotions all being the same, that should not be surprising for the Jedi characters, as calmness and a kind of detachment were parts of their training. Look at Luke throughout most of Episode VI. As soon as his Jedi training had basically completed, he became much more emotionally flat, and the Prequels captured this temperament well in their Jedi characters, who, unlike Luke, grew up being trained as Jedi, and so were likely to be even more composed and calm than him. As for other characters, what about Palpatine/Sidious? What about Padme? And the Trade Federation characters were not emotionally flat at all; not even sure what you're talking about there... They were constantly nervous, and only feigned calmness when they were negotiating, which again, was a very clever nuance, showing the importance of maintaining a facade in politics (something I noticed, even as an 8-year old, but which took me longer to fully appreciate). It showed that these cowards were paper tigers, who would fold at the first sign of trouble, and made them more interesting and easier to hate. Every time I watch a video criticising the Prequels, I always wonder if the critics really paid any attention. Some did, but many who criticise the Prequels talk a lot of nonsense about them. I found it odd that so many who hated on the Prequels claimed to love Episode VII, which truly was a loose film IMO, and which I didn't like at all. People really didn't give the Prequels (Episode I in particular) a fair shake.
Victor Sutherland do you think RLM is the sole reason we don’t like it? If you want to talk about brainwashing notice how every person who says they like this movie starts with “I first saw it when I was a kid and I liked it back then...”
@@Loris71734 It's okay to not like it. That's completely fine. But there's no need to go off on an autistic tirade about it. And while I don't believe RLM are the sole reason behind the prequel hate they are a HUGE part of the problem. And this is coming from someone who watched the original trilogy first.
@@megaman15ish is reviewing a movie an autistic tirade now? If you think RLM is a HUGE reason as to why people didn't like them you are just looking for a scapegoat. The original videos came out 10 years after the movie lmao and 2009 was not a time where RUclips had as big an influence on people as now. The reuploads don't even have 10 million views...And why do you say "a HUGE part of the problem"? Is prequel hate/dislike a problem to you? After you just said it's okay not to like it?
Honestly The Phantom Menace is my favorite prequel, please hear me out. I have most memories with Star Wars Episode 1 whether it's the Boonta Eve Pod Race or The Finale with Darth Maul this movie amazed me. Yes I know, older fans of Star Wars were pissed. But I was 6 years old when I first saw it and I loved it. Btw, The Empire Strikes back is the best Star Wars movie IMO.
I was born in 2000, a year after this film was released, I first watched Star Wars when I was 5 and my father let me watch, every single movie. I had tons of fun with every single movie! Until I turned 8 Episode 3 was my favorite one. But then I changed to The Empire Strikes Back due to it being my fathers favorite (plus it's amazing).
"whether it's the Boonta Eve Pod Race or The Finale with Darth Maul" So you're just an action scene junky. Story, character development, plot and plot twist, making sense, mean nothing to you. When you don't value substance in a movie, then you can enjoy a movie without substance. "But I was 6 years old when I first saw it and I loved it." Yeah, I liked a lot of crap when I was a kid too; but I can admit now looking back, that it doesn't hold up, or was poor work.
It wooshed when I was young, but I grew to like them. The prequels aren't just about how Anakin became Darth Vader, but also how Palpatine became Emperor. They are important to Sheev's story, and I always get chills when it all comes together and he gets the emergency powers, effectively taking control of the entire senate.
@@darkxarchon people at this point try their best not to understand the movies lol. I'm not joking watch a modern shit talk review on prequels like cosmonaut. Its embarrassing to humanity
Chris, the reason Lucas didn't put the camera on the other side is that you have to have all the pod racers going in the same direction as in all going for the finishing line to right of screen. If you suddenly show scenes from the other side they'll be racing to towards the left of the screen, as in where they started from. It's called 'Crossing the line' in film making. Flip a few shots in an editing application and you'll see what I mean.
Why are you comparing the politics of Phantom Menace to an emotionally charged manipulation in Return of the Jedi? Two different focuses. One is a gentle manipulation. The other is an overt one. Politics matters. Dismissing Palpatine’s machinations strikes me as foolish
I actually think the politics is one of the best things about the prequel trilogy. Palpatine's rise to power is a very accurate depiction of how a fascist ruler takes hold. I always felt that the OT lacked backstory about the empire's motive and I think this war between religious extremes (jedi and sith) fits perfectly. I understand why other people may not like it, but I really enjoy stuff like this.
@@Chrysina-t6k the politics absolutely make sense. A society so large that it contains many planets is bound to have disputes about trade, which can often lead to populism taking root. Also the attempted arrest of palpatine in episode III is used as an excuse to centralize power much like the reichstag fire was used in weimar germany. Love the allegories here.
@@kapelski104 I agree with you. And, it's not even as if the senate related scenes take up that much space. Ian McDiarmid is tremendous as Palpatine. All the subtle changes in colour palette of set and clothes to signal the shift in power is also really well done.
I was a fan of the prequel trilogy and remember seeing episode 1 the phantom menace and I was 10 years old and loved it seeing it with my farther was incredible experience but now days I find it a bit boring except for the pod race and lightsaber battles
Star Wars politics work just like our current global economy. The USA (other countries too but really just USA) sanctions and blockades countries, sends a proxy force to invade, then invades to fight the proxy force.
Tbh, there r so many people who complain about the politics of the film saying that it’s too difficult for children to follow, but as a toddler, I even enjoyed those scenes. So George Lucas succeeded in what he wanted to do with those films if u ask me
It's pretty sad that he analyses everything in each scene, the sound the shots the lighting, that's what he does with his spare time, but why am I saying that's why he's got a million views right.
*Stupid if you ask me.* Pod race is a masterpiece. This stupid youtuber just couldn't find anything "critical" to talk about it. So he comes up with the "left to right" bullshit!
it cuts an incredible amount of plotwork. If you're actually using your brain when watching the movie, that re-cut does nothing but confuse you. It's just a lazier version of the movie.
TPM was awesome and showed how the republic and politics brought about the empire. It satisfied the sw fan in me after the star wars drought we all went through after rotj. AotC was ruined with a terribly acted loved story bringing the movie to an standstill and RotS was too much story for one movie to tell properly. My order of preference for the prequels trilogy is TPM, RotS and then AotC. Dont get me wrong i still love this trilogy but it definitely isnt without its flaws.
George Lucas did not watch 'Jingle all the way' and pick Jake Lloyd.........guess its easy to be an influencer. Just take laxative and turn microphone on
Hey. If you're planning on rewatching this movie, do what I did. Try to find all the things you actually LIKED about it. (Examples: set design, costume design, the characters of qui-gon and darth maul). Oh, and also, DRINK COPIUS AMOUNTS OF ALCOHOL.
Yeah I agree haha. I kinda liked the Droid designs, like the destroyers and all that. They were cool to see. There's like 10% of the movie that's awesome.
+l GrandusHoopus "That sounds like it's a difficult task ;)" Okay, just real quick, "like it's a difficult task", not "like a difficult task", as in, "try, that makes it sound difficult". It's not a difficult task because, aside from a certain segment that had overwhelmingly negative reactions, I and II were rated above average, and that's with Jar Jar etc. taken into account - so really, you can't throw a rock without hitting several of those things, as with any movie of that general qualitative level.. Anyway, just clarifying what I meant up there, obviously this thread is aimed in a different direction.
Palpatine's plan was to have Padme sign the treaty to make that the Trade Federation's invasion of Naboo legal so the Chancellor wouldn't be able to do anything about it. Then Palpatine, as a Senator, would order a vote of no confidence in the Chancellor because of the invasion and since Naboo is his homeworld, he would get backed up by the Senate out of sympathy. This is all explained in the film.
Hey, come on, he found the one thing he could put into his review that he didn't just straight up lift from the Plinkett reviews, let him have it lol. "These are eyes that analyze film" lmfao. Yeah, Chris, shame you weren't aware of one of THE most basic fundamentals of filmmaking.
No its not. You are trying to sound smart. The 180 degree rule has to do with actors talking in a scene and line of sight. Not a race scene. When you film actors talking and face each other. Look it up before you try to sound smart. literally google "film 180 degree rule" which im going to do for you. one sec. "180 degree Rule states that, if character A is looking right at B, then Character B will look to left side of A 180 degree Rule is principally purposed to match the eyeline shot of two characters. ... Don’t Place your camera Above the Imaginary Line (See the Figure 4)."
@@OSGondar Go to the Wikipedia article and look up examples, hold on, I'm going to do that for you, "Another example could be a car chase: If a vehicle leaves the right side of the frame in one shot, it should enter from the left side of the frame in the next shot. Leaving from the right and entering from the right creates a similar sense of disorientation as in the dialogue example." The 180 degree rule in film applies to simple things like planes facing the right side of the frame if they travel east. You're a fool if you think that the 180 degree rule only applies to dialogue. If you wanna sound smart, and do so by being a pretentious asshole, do your research properly, pal ;)
I think it all depends on how old you were in 1999, and how willing to get swept up in it all. I was 21 and got totally in to the video games, board games, snacks/ drinks/cereals promotions, toys, collectables. It was a great time. The movie was far from being a classic, but we had watched the trailer and Duel of the Fates countless times and it became something more than a movie. Ironically, I wish that someone would do a special edition of it, with improved CGI, better editing etc.
I'm the first to admit that the prequels are deeply flawed, especially this one, but I still enjoyed it. And seriously, the Darth Maul fight is still hands down the best lightsaber fight in the entire series.
The best lightsaber fight is luke vs Vader in ROTJ, you absolute idiot. It’s not even close. Luke finally snapping and smashing Vader into submission is the culmination of an entire epic.

AnSan yes. very true
I prefer Battle of the Heroes from episode 3 personally.
MadCourier 6 Same here but the soundtrack in the prequels are objectively great and I believe to be the greatest in the franchise.

Plus the first thing you mentioned is what the movie is named after.
I totally agree with you. It's not as bad

“Nothing much is going on” in the lightsaber battle at the end... I actually always loved the subtle touch that obi wan’s lightsaber fires a split second before Quigon’s (and before the energy doors deactivate) implying his presient awareness has surpassed his master, a few moments before his master dies.
Also it called duel of the fates because it’s the fate of Anakin if Qui Qon lived he would not have turned
Okay, I appreciate what you're going for, but I highly doubt that Obi-Wan activating his lightsaber before Qui-Gon has any symbolic value.

Ewan Mcgregor as Kenobi and Ian Mcdarmid as Sidious were massive highlights to me during the prequels.

@@okayge_ I think the sit around and talk scenes could've worked if the dialouge actually worked. Just look at the first four seasons of Game Of Thrones

Ewan mcgregor was pretty good imo
Look up "what if the prequels were good". I forget who does it...but he has a video for each film & what should have been done. Interesting shit. He says that Obi Wan should have been main character throughout with Anakin as supporting role.
Obi Wan main character. Maul as main villain not getting killed until episode 3...that alone fixes a bunch.
+FACE Maul is not the sort of villain you could follow for 3 films.
kingmatt2563 Sure he is.
So you're like, "finally, they take Grevious out" instead of, "who the hell is this guy?"
Be it Maul or another Sith...I think if the villain got away in Episode 1, this would hold more weight when he is killed in episode 3...especially as Obi Wan finally kills the guy who killed his master...this is a thread that would loom over episode 2 and part of 3...that Obi Wan feels guilty about losing his master.
And so they drive him towards the Dark Side from the very beginning. Anakin was never the Chosen One.
The question is... who cares about all this Senate bullshit???
@@filmtoppings nobody. But had it not been so bad it would have been one of those aha moments. I mean the way they pulled it off was awful.
The left to right thing in the podrace is clearly intentional, just like how Peter Jackson decided to have Frodo and Sam go from left to right in almost every scene. The series of whip pans in a row does feel a bit monotonous though, I remember the section that just has several pans in a row.
I think the reasoning is having the same side and angle means you can just use the same cgi model just at a different angle. Cheaper and lazier
Lucas worked on Grand Prix in the 60s, the podrace is an homage. He copied it shot for shot.

I agree... I love Kylo Ren. It's a shame with Snoke because there was this huge mystery behind him and even though we may get an answer in episode 9... no one cares anymore because he's dead.
I thought the scenes with him were the most intimidating thing I’ve seen in a theater. The way he stands over everyone and his sudden shifts in mood were terrifying. stop shitting on my boy Qui-Gon
Qui gon is one of my favorite star wars characters
Qui Gon's the best part of the movie. Love that guy.
Don't believe you. Qui Gon Jinn had the personality of wonder bread; and scarcely served any purpose in the story.
+Yobachi2007 Just like Darth Maul. At least The Clone Wars TV show tried to fix that by giving him some actual character.
LoN3wOlF5tudi0s "All he had going for him was looks and fighting style"
Yeah, and that's plenty, especially compared to the cardboard we were told to think of as characters in the rest of the prequels.
Finaly ACUAL CRITISISM
Perfect rebuttal.
Yes TPM is flawed. But I wish more people actually used real criticism like you did.

I was Phantom Menacing after watching Batman v Superman.
I was Phantom Menacing after the first Hobbit movie.

+Jude Monge They were good...
+Stephen Gontis I am not saying they were terrible films. They were far from that. I'm just saying they were really disappointing. Their execution just wasn't up to par with the LOTR films. I actually enjoy them for what they are.
If I may, I think the first and third hobbit movies are Ok. Desolation is good. Not as great Lotr, but still entretaining and fine for what they are.
I love Star Wars, and I actually really liked the prequels.
Menelliee respectfully disagree
Cool. I would have liked to love them too.

The reason the shots are not on the left hand side of the podracing is because of the 180 degree rule!
Then break the rule like The Bourne Identity did! (or Tokyo Story with 360 degree rule)
Also, isn't 180 degree role only used when MULTIPLE characters talk/interact with each other?
廖浩 Yes, you can break the rule, but it would have been good for Chris to explain that. I don't think he knows about the 180 degree rule. And it's a rule that's always used, not just for multiple characters that are talking with each other.

Jake Lloyd was 10 years old in this film. He did an amazing job especially following the direction of crazy Lucas...

Uh Crazy Lucas I would've preferred Hayden Christen as Anakin in The Phantom Maniac.
I remember watching this in theatres as a kid and have to agree with you that the diplomatic parts went over my head. When I watched this movie as an adult now, I enjoyed it 10x more. They were always going to include a new sith in the movie, so it makes sense that they would just rewrite it go be Ray Park as Maul.

11:27 has this guy ever been to an auto race of any kind? the audience watches the race on just the outside of the track, people are watching the cars go from left to right, it's almost as if Lucas wanted the audience to view the scene the way the crowd is watching the race. what an odd thing to do.

Oh really. Makes sense.
You're icon makes me proud!
Wow, this movie came out 20 years ago. I got old.
You forgot to mention the scene where they use their super speed against the droidekas
Leia Poppins
why do the Jedi need balance to the Force? There's only 2 Sith and loads of Jedi. Anakin does bring balance to the Force, in the original trilogy there are 2 Siths and 2 Jedis, so what did the Jedis think bringing balance would mean?
Charlie Clifton-Brown omg you're right
As George Lucas has stated in the past... using the "dark side" of the Force is a perversion that corrupts the force... so to bring the Force back into balance would be to remove that source of corruption/evil.

6:15 [about Jar-Jar Binks] "Now look, every single thing that could have been said about this 'thing' has been said already" .... except that he might be a hidden Sith Master who is posing as an idiot while manipulating everyone to his own evil ends....
king koopa Not really. I did say "might be". I think it's an intriguing idea, but frankly I doubt George Lucas has that much subtlety.
That Theory is Fake and Gay
+ixtl guul That theory is the ridicilous attempt to excuse one of the biggest cinematic disappointments in history. And like you said: Lucas does not have that much subtlety.
+ixtl guul Or he might just be an idiot that is so bad as a character and creation that some fans are desperately trying to explain away and excuse him.
LOL do you honestly believe after watching the prequels that George Lucas had some master plan for a moron who was only created so the kids could wear their parents down into buying them everything Jar Jar. cha ching.

My bad.
***** Fuck you Rick Berman! You ruined this too... wait that's not Rick Berman...

It would be so much cuter if Anakin had an over-sized helmet. Like it was cute as hell when Rey wore that over-sized helmet it TFA.
+Nit Picker When Rey wore that helmet it wasn't just cute but also I thought that soon enough she was going to fight alongside with The Resistance
Why are you comparing the politics of Phantom Menace to an emotionally charged manipulation in Return of the Jedi? Two different focuses. One is a gentle manipulation. The other is an overt one.
Politics matters. Dismissing Palpatine’s machinations strikes me as foolish
Chris is mistaken about a great many things
I actually think the politics is one of the best things about the prequel trilogy. Palpatine's rise to power is a very accurate depiction of how a fascist ruler takes hold. I always felt that the OT lacked backstory about the empire's motive and I think this war between religious extremes (jedi and sith) fits perfectly.
I understand why other people may not like it, but I really enjoy stuff like this.
People just repeating talking points. Palpatine is fan favorite, but politics bad, makes no sense.
Even as a kid I liked the politics in the film lol
As a kid I always found politics cool, in the movies Lol
I didn’t know that the politics where ahead of its time as I can relate to them in today's current event's
Tbh, there r so many people who complain about the politics of the film saying that it’s too difficult for children to follow, but as a toddler, I even enjoyed those scenes. So George Lucas succeeded in what he wanted to do with those films if u ask me
@@shotbro4998 so you were a booooooooooooring kid!!
My Universe
I’m not a rare case of people who enjoyed the politics as a kid. Almost everyone my age who saw this film before the rest felt that way
The left hand right hand side thing is a humongous nitpick
It's also called the 180 degree rule in filmmaking and has been a standard for editing and shooting continuity for ages.
Chris Stuckmann is ignorant on film-making, so of course he will nitpick these kind of things.
@@comicsans1689 I know, of course he will.
Darth maul is Bobby fett. Looks cool, badass, awesome, hardly has any lines.
Owen B. Autocorrect strikes again, I think
I saw a fan recut of the Phantom Menace which cut out all of Jar-Jar and a lot of Anacin's scenes. It improved the movie dramatically.
Ok boomer
it cuts an incredible amount of plotwork. If you're actually using your brain when watching the movie, that re-cut does nothing but confuse you. It's just a lazier version of the movie.
"In my notes I actually wrote: don't hate on it just because redlettermedia told me to". Massive fail ensues.
The main character is Qui-Gon. He is in almost ever scene and drives the plot. Ridiculous statement.
"There is an over reliance on CGI" shows example of miniature model tanks.
"Original Trilogy is timeless because they use real models"- shows images that are actual 2D images
+Kate the bear
"Try"
That sounds like it's a difficult task ;)
l GrandusHoopus Lol absolutely. It's tedious and takes an immense amount of patience. And also copious amounts of alcohol.
Yeah I agree haha. I kinda liked the Droid designs, like the destroyers and all that. They were cool to see. There's like 10% of the movie that's awesome.
Eric Chappell Yeah and "Duel of the Fates"! That score gives me chills every time. :D
+l GrandusHoopus
"That sounds like it's a difficult task ;)"
Okay, just real quick, "like it's a difficult task", not "like a difficult task", as in, "try, that makes it sound difficult".
It's not a difficult task because, aside from a certain segment that had overwhelmingly negative reactions, I and II were rated above average, and that's with Jar Jar etc. taken into account - so really, you can't throw a rock without hitting several of those things, as with any movie of that general qualitative level..
Anyway, just clarifying what I meant up there, obviously this thread is aimed in a different direction.
it was so cool to hear your little radio show from when you were a kid
Palpatine's plan was to have Padme sign the treaty to make that the Trade Federation's invasion of Naboo legal so the Chancellor wouldn't be able to do anything about it. Then Palpatine, as a Senator, would order a vote of no confidence in the Chancellor because of the invasion and since Naboo is his homeworld, he would get backed up by the Senate out of sympathy.
This is all explained in the film.
17:23 Thank you very much for allowing me to enjoy the Phantom Menace.
11:55 that's called the 180 degree rule, Chris... break it and you disorient the viewers.
4 years old Chris disappoints and me...
Hey, come on, he found the one thing he could put into his review that he didn't just straight up lift from the Plinkett reviews, let him have it lol.
"These are eyes that analyze film" lmfao. Yeah, Chris, shame you weren't aware of one of THE most basic fundamentals of filmmaking.
it also reinforces that they are going around a track and will end up back at the starting line.
No its not. You are trying to sound smart. The 180 degree rule has to do with actors talking in a scene and line of sight. Not a race scene. When you film actors talking and face each other. Look it up before you try to sound smart. literally google "film 180 degree rule" which im going to do for you. one sec. "180 degree Rule states that, if character A is looking right at B, then Character B will look to left side of A
180 degree Rule is principally purposed to match the eyeline shot of two characters.
