    "We weep for the blood of a bird, but not for the blood of a fish. Blessed are those with a voice. If the dolls could speak, no doubt they'd scream, 'I didn't want to become human.'"
    I still get chills when that line is delivered.

      I couldn't agree more. Beyond the bombastic cg sequences, the interlacing of the two styles is phenomenal and still holds up. In the first scene with Batou and the Gynoid, the walls are drawn but then textured over with cg effects and it looks amazing

    I am a classically trained artist. I totally disagree that the CG animation did not go well with the traditional animation. The way that it was done was like a beautiful dance between the two. They were tied together through blur in the background that absolutely strengthened the surreal dream effect and married the contrast. There was no distopia with any of the aesthetics of the film; in fact it was mind blowing in my little opinion.

    What people always forget when they call GitS pretentious: Imagine how you would comment on the world around you if you had an instant connection to everything, every great thinker and artist in worlds history has every written down... humans in this world are all connected to the net on a neural level, at all times, 24/7. That being said, Innocence was kinda going overboard with this idea from time to time... but I guess that's Mamoru Oshi's film making.

    For me is a clear A, because some of the questions put over the table are really, really good. For example, "Do an AI or a machine has rights?". Yeah, we saw it with the Puppet Master before, but in this movie they put it in a whole new level, like when Batou and Motoko are speaking about the way nobody ask the sex dolls if they want to have souls or not, empathizing more with the AI than the humans (even if she is a child), showing than Batou is beginning to walk the same path Motoko did before: losing attachment with the human world.
    They way all this is told is fucking brilliant.
    About the dialogue you need to understand that japanese is really hard to translate the same way in other languages because with a few words they can express a lot of things, and sometimes you need to fill the holes with more words in the translation.

  • @Palmieres

    I really think you should have mentioned the horror of the motivation for the creation of these dolls, and how the investigation started (the disappearance of a young girl). The moral and social issues involved in this plot point are poignant - the stealing of young minds for the purpose of sexual slavery. It was very interesting to see a mainstream Japanese animation movie that instead of sexualizing inocence and chilhood instead grounds it and distills it to the despicable thing it is. I'm a very big fan of anime, but the depiction of young girls (with notable exceptions, of course) has always bothered me to no end. We see younger and younger girls and boys being depicted as sexual beings in the media, and it's becoming so common place people don't even notice it. Unless it affects them and their families. It needs to be understood that the demand for visual satisfaction of one's fantasies creates a growing market, and there will always be people willing to do anything to profit from it, even hurt other people. The creation of that type of content on a large scale brings a sense of normalization and ultimately of acceptance. And that can't happen.

    • @mengie87
      @mengie87 6 дней назад

      This is a 7 year old comment on a video just as old, but I have to chime in and say how discerning it is. Thank you for saying what needs to be said in terms of sexualizing innocence...this film does at least criminalize it....though I do wonder at the true intention given the medium of entertainment (normalizing, pro-programming...), smoke and mirrors... I would add that often times, truths of the world are mirrored in film...what this film shows is only a inkling of the horrors of reality. I would fathom that what is presented here was happening 20 years ago...certainly now. Most people turn away from the dark sides of truth...consciously blissful in their ignorance. To what end? The victims shown in this film are not only fictional...which makes it very difficult for me to watch it again, because this ain't just fiction, folks...

    • @frankjaeger2565

      It's mostly about the theme of dolls: humans create dolls or androids to make something that looks like them, but then they realize they are just like them, a material entity that has no inherent value and won't survive death. With this realization wr come to understand that we can't just consider the needs lf beings that look like us, but also everything that has a "Ghost".

    I understand what you mean about subtitles. I am an old school anime girl. I have been watching anime since before it was popular in the US and before it was known here as "ANIME". I watched so many movies w/o subtitles it was second nature to me. It wasn't until the EARLY 90's where my good friend would actually translate for me and print out scripts for me for the ANIME that I loved. Some people today think reading subtitles is hard (reading subtitles is second nature to me), but they should try reading a script and watching a movie - LOLI first saw this movie when It was first released in the theatres in the US with my bf and I was Blown away. I agree it was more philosophical than the first one and the CG stuff Is nice eye-candy and a little distracting, but the storyline holds up.Good review :)

    Innocence is based on an earlier story from the manga. Namely Chapter 6 Robot Rondo.
    While the first movie was based on the main story from the manga, with set-piece scenes copied from various chapters, Innocence focus entirely on that one chapter, change the timeline to post-major, adds mostly original action scenes and rises the pretentiousness to 11.
    Spoiler warning:
    The chapter from the manga: Some of the androids and gynoids are going berserk killing people, sector 9 investigates as one of the almost-victims was a VIP and finds an SoS on one of the berserk robots. Turns out the company that made them was using illegal ghost dubbing to add real emotion to their robots, thus making them very desirable. Two of the girls used in the ghost dubbing bribed one of the technicians with sex favors to make a series of robots go berserk and and hide the SoS message on them, so they'll draw the attention of the police and get rescued. Sector 9 finds them and ultimately scolds them because people died from their stunts.
    The Movie:
    It's the same exact story! As I said, the story was change to the post major era. The robots are all Gynoid sexdolls and they suicide after the kill for extra drama. Extra subplots such as the Yakuza visit or the surreal hacker where added for extra action. Extra seriousness symbolism was added in everything....

    Please do a Final Fantasy The Spirits Within review as I can't Seem to find it on you're channel.
    Personally I love it, as in Akira, the planet has a heart and a soul, as every other living being.
    The earths soul, Gaia is threatened and the earths real defenders come out to defend it. A much underrated movie which requires the Stuckman touch.
    With very little to do with the final fantasy gaming franchise. The voice talents of Steve Buscemi, Donald Sutherland, Ving Rhames, Alec Baldwin and James Woods bring this amazing movie to life. The shear CG talent involved to bring this into being is amazing and is a totally underrated film in my book. Hope this finds you well and will look forward to you're future review or even a link if I've missed you're thoughts.

    Hey Chris, first of all thank you for your great work, I'm enjoying your videos over the last three years a hell lot, here from good old germany (I'm would never say "good old germany" but it came to my mind riding...hmm funny)
    It's my first time that I comment to one of your videos and I'm just doing it out of...some crazy mood I#m in right now, but non the less I do want to suggest a movie to you (if you've not already seen it), just for watching, not necessarily for reviewing, no just for plain fun, really it's an awesome black comedy from denmark (I think...well somewhere out of scandinavia for sure) starring Mads Mikkelsen in one of his best and rare comedic roles and is made by Anders Thomas Jensen.
    I'm seriously convinced that you gonna have all lot of fun with this movie, as I had and it's pretty much a scandinavian indie black comedy so what not to love?
    The Name of the Movie is...
    Taddddaaaaaa

    if you haven't seen it, watch it, if you have...well I won't mind if you'd review it.
    Yep...thats it have a nice day or so...

O_o Even that part you mentioned where they talk about children, I had similar thoughts while studying developmental psychology. ...it's still freaking me out. There's so much about humankind that's creepy to think about and that was discussed in this movie. I love it. I actually think that Innocence gives much more to think about and is much more valuable as a piece of art than first movie.

    the problem with japanese movies is that kanjis can have different meanings depending on context, so a sentence can have a meaning in the start of the movie and another in the end, and such things, like puns, are almost impossible to translate to other languages. Reason why I find puns to be the worst way to make comedy, it highly restrics the amount of people that will understand the joke. An example would be Doctor Strange, whose name was not translated to some countries... that joke about "master doctor" just doesn't make sense when translated because the name wasn't translated. Well, a movie that depends on such kind off game with words have huge problems being translated, and though Ghost in the Shell don't use it in a comic way, I have the feeling that a huge chunk of the things we find "confusing" here in the West is because of this lack of translation.

    • @HappyBeezerStudios
      @HappyBeezerStudios 5 лет назад

      That Dr. Strange example is the kind of pun i almost expect to be translated, including the name. Atleast that is how it would've been in the 80's and 90's

    I actually LOVED the blend of computer CGO or whatever it is but I watched it on an old S-video projector. The scene with the parade is just amazing. I wish the show wasn't so confusing though. It needed to be longer and the dialogue needed to be more dynamic and the characters needed to be slightly more interesting. B+ is a great rating.

    Sorry for being five years late, and first of all: nice video! Liked your view on character building. But when I got the DVD back in... between 2007&2009, it was better than anything I ever saw before. The CG and the classic animation did merge very neat - on those screens!
    Sadly, the upscaling doesn't make the movie age well!
    Also, the commentary track and the making-of showed me, that there's SO MUCH lost in translation, and so many things we don't get, due to the complex japanese culture. The director said in the the commentary:"Basically it's a movie about dogs." What?!!!
    -Production time for the festival scene only: one year
    -supermarket shooting:some thousand objects created, just for accurate debris behavior
    - Kenji Kawai built the huge clock for his amazing score in real life, and recorded it's sound in a gigantic cave.
    Just wanted to mention that.

    This one is still good but I always felt it gets a bit up its own ass with the philosophical stuff. The first one managed to do that without feeling as pretentious about it. I still feel like it ends up in a good place by the end but there are moments in this movie where it's hard not to roll your eyes and groan as it stops dead to throw some clunkyily delivered philosophy at you.

    This is one of my favorite animated films. It has such a unique look and appropriate and nice looking use of CGI. The story/mystery is worth it and the resolution is disturbing but awesome. It is also good to see more of the characters that were introduced in the first film. This is a great flick. It's full of great lines and philosophy that sparks interesting discourse about the nature of what it means to have a ghost. Gosh this film is gorgeous.

    Despite not understanding much after first time watching it lol, it turned out to be my favorite movie of all times. Now I'm watching it religiously at least twice every year with original japanese dub and with my own made repaired subtitles. It has this beautiful hypnotic noir atmosphere that pulls you slowly in and makes your consciousness high and above all the petty things in real life. But it's really not a movie for everyone, only for people who ''want'' to understand it. Also those philosophical scenes are not just some pretentious crap. The idea is, that in a world where every individual with cyberbrain connected and synchronized to the net, has instant access to all the knowledge of the world. And the question is, what makes humans individual when they are synchronized to the same knowledge? What makes humans different from AI dolls?

      I personally don't like the film I actually prefer stand alone complex more.

    • @TheShadowofDormin
      @TheShadowofDormin 7 лет назад +1

      I liked how the characters got more development and were fleshed out more and the world building. Its not explaining every thing out right but it fills in the right amount of information to make the world and characters feel fleshed. You do have to see the first movie to watch this one but I like how it does some thing different instead of copying the first movie but I think the character moments and story really make this movie more enjoyable to watch even though its not as grand as the first movie. I love both movies and I am not saying this one is better because they both are amazing but the first movie seems to feel more cold a technical and the second movie feels like its warm and has more of a soul and when I think of which movie I would want to watch again right now it would be the second one. I say give it another chance and because even thought the first movie explains allot more the second one just implies it with character moment like Batou putting the jacket on the Major doll, or how much he loves his dog. The way Togusa deals with his crazy job, crazy partner and the situations they get in but you can see the humanity in how he deals with things and you can tell he has his family and heart influences the situations. I think I would have to watch both movie again to better explain it but I tried and sorry it was so long.

    This is a great review of an incredible movie, but I completely disagree with your statement about introducing pause between dialogue elements that express thought-provoking concepts. This is reminiscent of the point of view that many North American producers of yesteryear had when they dumb down their dialogue for an audience whose intelligence they by and large underestimate and perhaps even oppress.
    That's an issue of cause and effect. That's like saying that books should include more pictures rather than encouraging literacy. If we did that, then literacy skills would continue to decline rather than grow and as a whole, society would suffer greatly. I believe in the capacity of all people to be able to conceptualize the expression of this and other brilliant stories and incredible works of art through rich and absorbing dialogue. I mean wouldn't you in real life love to have conversations like those had in Ghost In The Shell? I think that many people long for that form of confidence of expression and the experience of intellect but have few opportunities in life to express such complexity because most people by and large underestimate the minds of other people in dialogue. Literacy and the ability to learn are the MOST important skills we'll ever have.
