- The complete version of Zip's fourth punk film, the source of many of the clips used in the above programmes. With punks on the King's Road and Portobello Road, Rat posing in a shop window, the Dispozest in Downing Street, and dramatic irony from punkettes at Zip's bedsit.
PM052. 1978. Music added in 2012: "One Drop" by PIL, "Yin & Yan" by Jah Wobble and Keith Levene and "Poptones" by PIL. Кино
Myth buster for younger viewers. While a gentleman with a short MoHaWk appears briefly here, this clearly demonstrates the hairstyle in its most elaborate form was actually more an 80s product. From what have seen there had been a short MoHaWk trend on the rise during late 70s, but it more closely resembled the iconic hair-piece sported by Robert De Niro
takes me back to when punk was fun, interesting and exciting. It meant so much to me and still does and shaped the way I view the world. Thanks for sharing this - love it
me too
Punks always fun man
Yup it was a good time to be a teenager 😜 well for me anyway as i couldn't afford decent clothes or anything really so when punk came along I thought I had cracked it 🍺🍻 not realising my leather and docs would cost me a small fortune 🎧♠️👀🍀😜🍺🍻
This is brilliant...Spotted 3 of my mates, and 2 dudes i used to see regularly in The Marquee.... Great days,,

I used to go down there in the late 70s, keep looking to see if I can see myself in these films.
Best days of my life I’m 61 now the place is fucked now so commercial
lol YES !
The best days of my life
happy times..happy days!!
Seeing this video along with the music that goes with it (Poptones by PiL), kinda trips me out...especially knowing that this was already almost 37-38 years ago. It's wonderful.
Best punk years 77 - 80, Good movie
Fanx from Sweden
gem of a link this 1978 hard to believe the destruction of flares and wide collars was more apparant then youd think
love the tampon earring
The fun that could be had with just a bottle of cider and a pair of handcuffs!
Great music I've never heard before!
Punk was pretty much fading away by 1979. The last time I went down the Kings Rd was in 1979, there werent so many people there. I was with a few friends. We went into Boy and I remember buying a T Shirt. The whole atmosphere felt very flat. It was a Sunday though.
Yup just like st marks
Punk died on new years eve 1976...when it turned into 1977 it was done
@Pete Testube What did I do in 77?...played football with my friends after school being 10-11 at the time...what is your point? What I hate about 1977 is all those completely shitty bands who just jumped on the band wagon because it was fashionable...the Drones, the this , the that....horrible bands who tried to make a career...fortunately it didn't happen for those clowns who knew one and a half chord between them...name me one single great punk band from UK who didn't start in 1976? and I don't mean "ok to pogo to" but "great"?....and you can't mention Clash, Damned, Pistols or the Buzzcocks....not much left:-)
43 ans déjà . Comme c est loin .
Always love seeing footage of 1970's punk but I think Captain Zip has got the year wrong on this footage. This kind of punk clothing would not have been available in 1976 & the Cosh the driver t - shirt that one of the punk girls is wearing is from the My way / No one is innocent single , which came out after the Sex Pistols had split up . That said, fantastic piece of history caught on film. Thank you....
It actually say's 78 at the beginning and that''s when the 'No-one is innocent' AKA 'A punk prayer/Cosh the driver' single was released. It got to number 7 in the charts in June 78. The biggest clue for the date is that it shows Mclaren and Westwoods shop, or the big clock outside it that say's 'Worlds End' That shop didn't open til 80. It was called 'Seditionaries' up til 1980 so it has to be 80 or after.
Cheers Paul! Must admit we didn't notice the Worlds End clock, much to our disgrace, so you are absolutely right! The 1976 tag was defo there & I think now changed to 78 - however - as you say, this footage has to be later. Interesting to see Captain Zip footage is being used for the 40yrs of punk London?? Would be good of the Cap'n to check in here to clarify his chronology - or is the Captain just not Sensible!!!????
These people are weekend punks....punk died 31th of December 1976...everything after that was a fraud..I have no respect for these people in this video..the buzz was already way way over by 1978..they were only there to beg for money off strangers
Thanks Captain, this is inspiring. And the music at the start and at the end (Poptones) of the video is my favourite song!!
The best days PUNK
thank you
4:37 and so begins the emergence of the BLOODY YUPPIE.

No looting. No fighting. No burning down businesses. Just a bunch of cool outgoing people hanging out with their besties having a good time.
Next time I see friends having a fun time I'll commend them on not looting, fighting and burning down businesses!
@@MysticOblong yeah bloody kids it’s all they do these days, in the 70s it was real harmless fun and there was never a riot or a war, nobody got raped.
Yeah but there was less instability then. Believe me I wish I lived then sometimes or even in the Victorian era since there are times I just crave silence.
@@yaelfeder9042 Less instability? Are you having a laugh, mate? You're obviously not of that era.
@@SluttChops I meant in America. At least that’s what my mom says but she grew up in Iowa. Nothing ever happens here. So if you wanted to live somewhere quiet, Iowa in America is the place to be! Ah federalism where one state is losing its shit and the other is boring!
i was in high school from 86-90 and always get sad that i never had a video camera and didnt document any of me and my friends. and i always wanted one back then, i was aware that i was young once and wanted to preserve memories. but in my mind back then you had to be a millionaire to afford this stuff. im sure i was probably way off on that assessment but i was super poor white trash in the bible belt of America and did not even know where one would get such equipment.
Hi Phil. I've been trying to track you down because I understand you were a performer on the very early alternative comedy scene. A comedian who was there at the time said he thought you'd filmed the first night at the Comedy Store in May 1979. Is that right? And if so, do you know if the film is still in existence?
Could make a Hundred Quid a day on Oxford Street ...It was a good life .
who's that cute girl around 4:40 minutes? prettiest punk ever

The no one is innocent single was released in 79 and that chick is wearing a t-shirt with the ronny biggs cover...
This more like 1980.
No it's definately 1980 or after. The clock is the biggest clue. It's Malcolm Mclarens and Vivienne Westwoods 'Worlds End' shop. It say's it on it. That didn't open until 1980. You can google it. It used to be called 'Seditionaries' before 80.
Well it does say at the beginning 1978 in big letters. It doesn't say 78-81. It's all the same people in it, so it's not a collage. He say's it at the beginning. He moved to London in 78 and actually filmed until 82. He made a total of 2 and a half hours covering Punk and the New Romantics. I'm well aware who he his. He put 1978 on it. I'm saying that's not possible.
I was around at that period too. I know the fashions. I still have a huge collection(compared to some) of original 'Westwood/Mclaren' clothes. The fashions don't fit in at all. In 78 half the country was still wearing flares. He put the date on it and I'm not saying he's lying but if you were there then you KNOW the Worlds End shop didn't open until 1980. I remember when the clock went up. I used to hang out in Seditionaries every weekend. He's obviously mistaken.
I'm not wrong and ego has nothing to do with fact. This ain't 1978. Unless you live in an alternate reality to the rest of us.
Yawwwwwn...You are getting pretty boring now...
Is this the Scottish band "The Zips"?
the girl with strong make up at 2.30 and more, is that Kath?
I think I know who u r talking about the cute punk with the spider web ten eye shadow
Does anybody know the name of the song in the first fourteen seconds of this video please ?
the first two songs are poptones and One drop by Public Image Limited
Thank you so much.
Living in the States in 1978 there wasn't really much different between London and Any town USA. Hanging out with friends, Music, Faison and NO Cellphones. I'll be in the UK for the first time next month. I'm sure much has changed but looking forward the trip.
Hey I really hope you ended up going to the UK 2 years ago! if so you made it before Covid hit!
@@MysticOblong I did get to make it to the UK in October of 2018. We were planning on going the month of September, but discovered unexpectedly I needed to have open heart surgery and was told it couldn't wait. I didn't make it to London as I had hoped. We landed in Manchester and spent the rest of the time in Wales. I've never seen such beauty anywhere. I'm hoping to return again after the pandemic.
@@1959blantz Great to hear you made it there (and you got through the open heart surgery)! I remember Wales from a childhood holiday - I remember how green it was and the little stone walls and streams etc. Wish my parents were still around so I could ask exactly where we were in Wales. I'm English by birth but emigrated to Australia as a kid. Definitely would like to return to the UK for a visit after the pandemic passes! All the best to you!
Distinct lack of flares from the general public for 76, sure this isn't later?
it says 78 and i think by that time flares in that area weren´t as popular
this is the 80's
@@thomasandersen6719 Has to be the 80s. 70s Punk was still very biker/rocker influenced. I don't see any biker influenced clothing here.
smiths crisps n cider in glass bottles.jeez im fukkin old..
Right before everyone started dressing like Madonna.
This can't be 1978. It shows the Worlds End clock which didn't go up til 80.. There are lots of things that fashion wise weren't out in 78. The earliest it could be is after 1980.
I'm not sure. There is a big Who Are You poster from 1978.
I saw that too and it puzzled me(being a huge Who fan) but The Worlds End shop and clock definately didn't open until 1980, before that it was called 'Seditionaries' it was also called 'Let it Rock' and 'Sex' previously. It's such a famous shop you can google it. I used to go to 'Seditionaries' The clock is a famous landmark, it's still there. I would trust a massive clock that I know the date of more than I would the Who poster. The record has always been on sale since it's release.
Well I suppose it was a bit of 'left-over' from 78 then. My basic intuition is that it isn't 1978 - it just seems later to me. In fact looks very 1980 - there were more hippyish looking people in 78 than in this clip too. If you are sure about the clock then that proves it I would think.
There certainly aren't enough flared trousers around for sure :-) . It has to be 80 at the earliest. There aren't enough New Romantics to make it much later.
I agree with that. It could possibly be 79 but nothing else - and your clock thing dates it later so...... it must be 80 I think.
Where do all the old punks go?
@Bob Freak i think u misunderstood me? it was meant more like "i wonder what all them 70/80s punk kids are doing today...look like today?"
@Bob Freak ah, ok...😋✌️
posers no punks.
7.45 mins in, when anyone could walk by 10 Downing Street. After Thatcher got in she pissed so many people off they had to fence it off from the public lest they riot outside.
Where in London was this ? I came here because I thought the gorgeous Soo Catwoman would be in this video. Watching from London.
And all the cars are British
very easy to check date is check the cars,I didnt see any 80's models so if am right a lot of whAT WE see has to be 76-79 at latest no??
Far from 1976..no punks in 1876 looked like this..you obviously didn't live in the 70's....this is early 80's
50's had greasers , 60's had hippies , 70's had punk rockers , 80's had heavy metal heads & 90's brought us depressed ass grunge dweebs & hiphop rappers. fuck the 90's & after honestly
lol uh metal started before the 80´s grunge is 60´s 70´s children who grew up on rock and metal hip hop entered the international top 10 mainstream with rappers delight in 1979 ?
are you a millenial ?
playyah.Agree.. bandcamp and ytube are the things that I enjoy the last 10 years though..
90's gave us Britpop and Superstar Dj's, suddenly everything was great again. It was the 000's when it became crap again. Wot we got now...fucking K-PoP.
i'm looking forward to the dusttrailers in the 2040's.
