  • What's happening, people! I'm back with another Roxy Music reaction from their 1972 self-titled album, and this time we listen to the fascinating, lengthy, and multi-sectioned "Sea Breezes," a song with some incredible sonic elements and charismatic vocals from Ferry. So join me for a remarkable tune from this remarkable group. Cheers!

Imagine, this was what 16-17 year olds listened to in the 70's. What a deep baptism into music culture that was. No wonder the world has worsened since then.

"We've been running round in our present state hoping help will come from above
But even angels there make the same mistakes in love"
At first this sounded so dramatic to me. But at the same time it's quite soothing.
My fave track from the first album.

If you've ever sat on a British beach on a grey winter day, this is what it feels like. Again, it's like a movie, it makes me think of The Seventh Seal, it's black and white and stark. The Banshees do a version on their covers album , "Through The Looking Glass".

I just listened to the Siouxsie and the Banshees version for the first time in decades. It's much better than I thought it was.

Ferry is playing a self obsessed narcissistic narrator, walking away from love, but only measuring it as a shame.
Then he feels the loneliness, a cold wind comes in from the sea with dissonant music. Ferry would be used to a cold breeze coming in from the North Sea where he was brought up.
Another thing to note is Ferry’s electric piano playing. He’s not great, and Roxy do go on to have some great piano players, but sometimes and here Ferry’s intuition to play, create and write what the track needs is superb.
I also prefer the first 50/ 60% of the track, not saying I dislike the 2nd half, but the first half is probably more unique for pop/ rock.
