Cool! There’s an all original 1-71 at my local Detroit-Allison dealer still attached to its original generator set up. It used to provide power for the people at the top of Mt Washington
Daaaaaaaaang. I need that
I definitely would love to see that, witch dealer is that? I live around the Mt Washington area.
@@moondogdieselworks3883 the Mt Washington 1-71 generator is located at the New England Detroit Diesel-Allison (now called Power Products Inc) on Warren ave in Portland Maine. It is on display in their parts department.
there is a 53hours old one at wajax in Québec city

That would look so cool running the hydraulic pump on your trailer

You beat me to it!
Good idea 👍

Definitely a neat find 👍🏽
Wow! A one cylinder diesel engine. That's different!
Well done on engineering replacement parts.
Another old Detroit brought back to life by ol' uncle Wayne-O.
Thanks! We try!
...you've got a natural talent in front of the camera...talking to us like we are right there with you....handling problems as they pop up...sheer joy to watch....stay safe and thanks for letting us watch as you follow your passion...
Thanks man!
Pls turbo it
My dad started working on Detroit's/Terex's/Euclid's back in 1975. He used to take me with him a lot on service calls. I learned so much and man I loved every second, the sounds the smells oh man. Can you imagine as a kid in those days you to go to a construction site with the man repairing a Terex load runner? I was in heaven!!
He used to rebuild them old 71's 12V's 16V's etc etc too. Dad also was citified on Cedar rapids/El-jay crushers to do warranty work on them and he was the one that loaded the nitrogen on the cones, everyone left the shop when he was doing it lol. He also got to work way up north in lots of uranium mines in stupid cold weather doing warranty work on them ole Detroit's.
Loved when he came home and told the stores. I got to go with him to when replacing cone bearings and re-line cones on the crushers. Man I was so lucky. When I was 10 I had my own V71 and inline 71 service manuals under my bed lol. I had a bunch of injectors dad brought home and gave to me took em apart and back together so many times. I loved learning about them. Later in life me and him opened our own repair shop and my dad never stopped teaching me about them ole jimmy's. Sorry to ramble but I love seeing these ole Detroit's come to life, its like they have a sole lol. Keep them old Detroit's running, may need them again no electronics.
What a beautiful story man. Thanks for sharing, you and your pops are my kinda people. 🤟🤟
@@Ol2Stroker right back at ya! That was the very condensed version, wouldn’t change my childhood for nothing just because of my pops and his love for them Detroit’s!
Awesome, very nice. Back in the '70's I used to work on the 2-71 gensets all the time, mostly military. I love that baby blower, I can't tell if it's a Roots or a centrifugal of some sort. I had heard of a 1 cylinder and after working on Detroit's for 30 years I never saw one. Good work, very cool.
I have a 271 for backup power here at the house. There's a bunch of videos on it including where i blew it up, check em out. Thats a regular roots blower its just really tiny. Lol
First first visit and Wow what a fun project. I was drafted in 71 and signed an extra year to be assigned to the Army Corp of Engineers. I had 5 courses left for an Engineering degree. My assignment was 62B, Construction Equipment Repair. I learned small cranes, D9 dozers and road graders and articulating movers. But my favorite section was Diesel Engine Repair, a GM employee was section head on summer duty as a reservist. I was ogling his 55 Chevy in the parking lot when he approached to chat cars. We chatted and became friends. He recommended me to be retained as an instructor. Which i was but after he returned to his unit in Detroit, It all worked out as I enjoyed teaching the Physics of Diesel Engines, complex high pressure fuel systems and the repairs. We had 2 engines types in class. An older 4 stroke which would suck the skin off your hand, And a 6-71 Detroit Was was so beautifully engineered, 6-71 Supercharger (Blower) which we wanted for our cars. So when i saw your video tittle 1-71 from the 30s I had to watch. Same valve arrangement and governor operation only times 6. It sure brought back memories. And the 6-71 we had were inline and were so balanced zero vibration and a beautiful roar on acceleration. We also had a display engine for show. It was a V8-71 Painted white with Chrome everywhere. And it was the Beast! The GM Detroit designs involved in the 71 Cylinder head and valve injector mechanism were Mechanical Genuis. So solid, rigid, reliable, smooth and worked so well. You show here the requirements for good design in spread double hung berings for the Governor control shaft. Now I will go back and see how you make out on this 1-71, crazy designation but maybe water pump, generator, like construction or farm??? You do a great job explaining stuff and exploring the options with what you have, God old Farm Boy ingenuity there. Thank You, Dennis
Finished the video , Hell Yes, It ran great. Notice all the vibration to the floor during idle Nah me neither, rock solid runner right there. WOW So good to hear. You give an honest straight forward presentation. I HAD to subscribe. I do not play with 2Strokers at all but your presentation is so heart warming I want to see what you will do with this engine. Oh Yeah, Great retreat from my focus on 1950s American Flyer Model Trains. Makes me want to build a Steam Engine Freighter hauling Detroit Diesels to Your Shop. Need a Drone shot of the shop. Then find some scale engine models. I use 3D Printing so I can make anything. Not a new cobbled up Governor assembly thru! That was Awesome you saved the day and the old 1-71. I never dreamed they made such a thing, only 2 years. Guessing more call for 2-71, 3-71 for more power at a little more cost. Thanks again well done. D
Hey Dennis thanks for sharing. I have a bunch of Detroits, mostly 12v71s and 8v92s but ive always wanted a 1-71 so when I found it I had to buy it. If you're a Detroit fan you've come to the right place 🤟🤟
@@Ol2Stroker 12V71 V6 71 tied together. What a Beast that must be. I always felt the quality of the Detroit Diesels was a lesson is good design. Except for some of the obstructions. But think Roller Rockers in 1939!!!!!! Sleeves & Piston Kits to rebuild the Block!!!!!!!!! 2 Stroke with the Blower (we all wanted one for NA Gas engines), 4 Valves per Cylinder, Fuel Injection, All the flexibility in the blocks, counter clock wise rotation, all accessories on either side, Common Cylinder Specs for interchangeability, I took dozens of design concepts and philosophy with me after all that info absorption. And I still do when I upgrade my Model Trains. Seeing the governor assembly reminded me if the quality of design and build of those old engines. You Take care, I be watching you!
@@DennisMurphey 12v71 is a single block. 12v92 is 2 6v92s bolted together
DUDE! A 1-71 Detroit?! You been finding all the awesome things lately Wayne. Would love to see more on that!
Happy Thanksgiving to the wifey and you bud!
Thanks man I'm excited! Happy Thanksgiving!!
Beautiful machine and so smooth. So heavy, my Deutz Diter D303-1 1 cylinder 17 HP shakes like an earthquake.
Didn't realize deutz did a single very cool!
Based on the tag, you are correct about the naming. GM had the two stroke design program which started with the Winton Engine Company. After GM bought Winton, they went to work in the 1930s on the two stroke engine. Winton did the 201/201A, which was used in mainly in marine and railroad applications. Later Electro Motive came out with its 567, which was designed for locomotives. Small diesels were developed which became Detroit Diesel. Winton became Cleveland Engine Division did primarily marine diesel. If you ever get a chance to go to the USS Slater in Albany, the ship has all GM Cleveland engines. A friend who passed away was restoring them.
What a great find!!!
Oh no way I'll have to go there just for that now!! Thanks for the tip!
Another great video, Wayne. Your engineering on the rack was very impressive. You must work in a machine shop on the side. Great stuff
I love how ridiculously overbuilt this thing is. "Don't make em like they used to"
Truth
"Daaa Gee"! I could of swore that tin can taped to the exhaust was OEM!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Holy shit, what a find👍🏻
1st time I've seen a one lung Detroit Diesel.
Happy Thanksgiving Legend.
Thanks man Happy Thanksgiving!!
As a machinist, when i see a repair, i figure who ever repaired it did the best the could with what they had to work with. Love that old machine.
Good way to look at it
Just found your channel and this is the first video I've watched. This is so cool. Even with just one cylinder, that diesel clatter is unmistakably Detroit Diesel. I was surprised by how clean the exhaust was on first startup. Really interested to see where this project goes
Welcome!! I was also very pleasantly surprised at how clean it was!
It would be pretty neat to make like a doodle bug or something to use around the shop and pull stuff with it lol. Very cool engine
I agree we've gotta be able to use it
I'm always scouring craigslist hoping for the remote chance that someone is selling one of these that doesn't know what they are. There was only like 500 of them ever made.
You and me both brother!!
I saw one of these in the Detroit Diesel museum in United Engines in Oklahoma City back in the late 1970s. I haven't seen one since. I worked for United Engines back then as a partsman and mechanic.
That's awesome. Ive been chasing one for years
My dad used to work on them in the Navy and he said right off the bat it was a generator motor
That's awesome
Interesting find for sure. First time I've heard a 1 71 running, but there''s no doubt 'it's a 2 stroke Detroit. No mistaking that distinctive sound!
I love how it still has the sound
I'm impressed you were able to get your hands on one of these, never mind the fact that it runs like a champ. Well, once the rack was fixed enough to do the job. It's an awesome piece of history, and it's in the right hands.
It would look better with some older fuel filters, like CAV/Delphi or something similar, instead of the generic filter heads on that plate hanging off the side. You'll never find the original stuff, but you can make it look the part a whole lot better than it currently does.
I agree completely. It needs all new fuel lines anyway. I'm pretty sure i have some og canisters off a 53 that'd look more the part.
I mean wow who knew? This just shows how awesome and adventurous our country was with engineers with slide rules and analog gauges along with old school magnificent milling machines, and other equipment created these epic works of art. Look at a B&S small engine today. If it runs past 10 years that is notable because the overall premise of small engines today is throwaway. Here we have a 15 HP engine that is 84 years old, fires up and idles like a top with a minimal amount of any serious work and sounds so good. Sounds just like a little mini-6-71 with no turbo! Wow I had a real rush when that little rascal fired off and actually ran like a real Detroit because, well it is one! Bravo what a unique find!.
Pretty cool bulletproof design.
My neighbor bought an alice chalmers dozer, a tiny thing with an 2-71 or 41. Neat thing with the baddest ass whinch you ever saw.
Yea that's a 2-71
I appreciate your videos. Lots of good info. Just something to pass along to you. There are two guys over in Australia who pretty incredible mechanics. One is Stu Dangar of Dangar Marine on here and the other is a guy named Adrian who has a channel called Roots Blowers and Detroits. The reason I mention these guys is because it’s another great source for you to find obscure Detroit parts. They are those kind of people and two of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet.
Adrian is the injector guy right? I didn't know he had a channel thank you! Stu is legit i watched a ton when he was building that motor
@@Ol2Stroker you are correct sir. I should have known you would already know who they are. BTW I really love the trucks you’re working on. All of them.. This was a really cool video that I'll bet no one would of ever been able to see. Thanks to you I was able to view! Good old Detroit!
Not very many out there anymore!
Oh a 1 71 they made 1005 of them 😂 very collectable 😊😊i saw one in chicken alaska running a shaker at a gold mine in 99
I bet there's more than one up there!
Heya Wayne, great find there!😄 I think your on the right track with the rack linkage. The only other thing you might want to do, is make a custom cylinder head nut for that back corner, and weld a short extension with a tapped hole in the top, for an extra bolt. This can hold an extension of your custom rack frame, and will take some of the load off of the existing 2 bolts, and give it a lot more support on the opposite end. I'm surprised how easily it actually started. Compression must be really good! I'm kind of curious to see what you do with this little gem!😉👍👍
Thought about that great idea. At the end of the day there's so little side load on it she's rock steady.
I like your video intro, it reminds me of the Smokey and the Bandit movie
Thanks that's what I was going for!
You're welcome, east bound and down
That is a little beast. It sounds nice and no smoke!
Really happy with how it runs!
Can't get enough of these old engines love it thanks for all the work you do 👍✌️
Sounds exactly like the 3-71 in my Massey 98 when you first start it and it only runs on one cylinder for a few seconds haha. So freakin cool
🤣🤣🤣🤣
The old one thumper is pretty rare. Congratulations on your find
Thanks!!
Nice little engine. I’m looking for a Lincoln welder that came with a Detroit Diesel from the factory. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your wife.
You and me both! Happy Thanksgiving!!
In 1964, when I was the college photographer, the automotive technology shop at Kilgore Junior College had a 1-71. Don't know if it ran, but it was certainly an unusual-looking engine...
Cool little 1 puffer Wayne. That would go great in my old 1940’s timber river boat👌
Poor thing would prolly sink!
Great video Wayne really enjoyed watching you make the new throttle shaft. Very Nice 1-71 Detroit glad it started and runs good. Looking forward to your next video stay safe Wayne.
Me too thanks man!!
What a cool old relic! That cast iron valve cover is awesome, just shows how they don’t make things like they used to. Old mechanical diesels are just fun puzzles to figure out 👍
They really are
That’s an awesome engine. Loved watching you bring that engine to life.
i saw the key in the output shaft and my mind went directly to gocart 🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣
That was f#@king awesome Wayne, I seriously can't believe how well that ran, considering it's age, and hardly any smoke, I've always wanted to try and set up and old diesel engine like that into a trike, maybe next year I'll try it, we'll see, keep up the great work Brother. 🇬🇧
One like that wouldn’t be a very good idea for a trike. Is basically a single cylinder semi truck engine. So, going to be very tall and heavy. All to get 15hp out of it. With some tuning and tweaking you might get 30 out of it. But, still not going to want to turn much rpm.
Would be much better off with a smaller 3 or 4 cylinder old diesel.
Thanks man, but yea definitely be a heavy trike lol
@NBSV1 maybe not a single cylinder, but something like a 2-53 wouldn't be a bad idea, orher diesels have been used, but it would have plenty of grunt, and it would be fun if nothing else.
No smoke isn't good on a 2 stroke
Incorrect
Mount it to a tornado siren (" the screamer)
I have a 1-71 in the storage shed behind my shop. I had it out & running about 3 years ago - she’s a champ. You found a beauty!
I have to admit that my knowledge on specifics around these older models, though your explaination was clear, and the commentary is fantastic. Great job!!
Thanks!
Awesome find man! Love old diesels especially the Detroit diesel! You have a cool little engine there! No doubt! I've only seen the inline twins but never seen a single! But I know that lots of them have went down with their ships. They were used on ships for power accessory engines for all kinds of equipment.
That is one seriously beefy starter solenoid. 🤔😎
Oh yea that thing came to party
@@Ol2Stroker I would imagine it is very old school and fully rebuildable. Rebuildable stuff is usually a little bigger. It makes the starter wire look too small. Love it, built to last.
@@MatthewBerginGarage originally these didn't even have a solenoid just big ka-chunk foot switch.

Fun journey to follow you as always Wayne! You really are the Detroit Diesel whisperer! I knew that you've known about this engine, I've daydreamed about making a go kart with one, but that ain't going to happen.
Saw in some other comments, I agree that a 6-110 engine would be pretty cool to get ahold of as well, And although the series 149 are cool, those are all gigantic engines which really can't be swapped into anything practical. Enjoy the videos as always man, probably my favorite RUclips channel!

" It ran when it last ran" That pretty much defines every motor ever made.
Every used motor ive ever bought anyway.
We built several satellite ground stations for the Air Force to use in Vietnam. Each system went out with 2 30KvA 3 phase generators on a flatbed trailer. Each generator was powered by a 3-71.
Badass
That engine is super cool. Great job getting it running.
Thanks 👍
That is really cool! I’ve always liked the sound of the two stroke detroit diesels. I used to have a 1987, U1000 Unimog, in which, I considered installing either a V6 or V8 diesel into, but didn’t because we moved to another country for a year. It would have been great, Unimogs are incredible, but truly under powered for maintaining any speeds over 55 or so.
Cool!
I love the Caddy! I had a 1969 Series 75 Formal as a high school bomber! I also messed with a 1-71 generator, but all original.

Very Cool Vid, you have most of DD covered, now you need to get a V16. Always great to watch your videos. ✌️
Thanks!
I just bought a 2-71 gm Detroit Diesil engine that has not run for 40 years and in one hour had it running. it had been in a building covered up for that long and the injectors were stuck in the open position so I unseized them with a little help from a shot of crown lube. Once it got fuel it ran very strong and now I am going to put it in my wood chipper. As I watched you it was much the same as you did but was lucky the nothing was broken. I got history on it and found out it ran a complete trailer parks power for 20 some years before the up graded to a newer system. I was very impressed with your video and hope to see more in the future. thanks .
Thanks Kenny! Nice work on your 2-71, they're great little engines!
You're a genius, love the old junk the most.

The starter looks right. It's a delco unit and the tag is red, which equals 6 volt.
I thought red was 24? Either way I hadn't even given 6v a consideration so maybe i should get a 6v battery for it. Thanks!
