What is your favorite Ghibli film? I think mine is Princess Mononoke because I love the environmental themes and stunning imagery. I take away a lot of 'show don't tell' inspiration from it as well because so much of it is only sound. I actually wrote a whole paper on the use of sound in Mononoke when I was in college. Sound is always something I forget to include in my writing anyway!

I have like- my top Ghibli films. Princess Mononoke is up there for the same reason as you. I also really love Howl's Moving Castle because the characters really resonated with me and how they developed over the movie gave me a more optimistic outlook on myself as well as the world around me. I also really l really enjoy the themes in Kiki and how realistic the relationships are in Totoro. Really Ghibli has this rewatchability that Disney films lack, I only cry once at a Disney film but never again, with Ghibli I can always find something new to take away with in the, like you said, subtext of the movies. Even when you have no idea what the plot is you will always understand the emotions and the characters on a level beyond physical and I don't believe any western film can truly capture my heart like eastern films can. If we talk about non Ghibli titles the A Silent Voice is also a great example of amazing media (I'm still pissed it lost to boss baby at the Oscars like wtf) I relate to Shouya greatly and how they portrayed his mental state throughout really was scarily similar to how I feel and by the end of the movie I, once again, had a much more optimistic outlook on life through his character. Anyway I know this is late but I still wanted to share :)

My favourite ghibli moves are 1. Nausicaä and 2. When Marnie was there.. I wanted to add a 3, but a lot of the movies share 3, if I had to really list them xD.. Maybe it has to be Castle in the Sky (as it was the first ghibli move I ever watched). I seem to love the more "unpopular" ones the most. Nausicaä captures the world-weariness (for me) I feel from time to time and the connection to life as it is. Acceptance.. of nature as it is. Anna (from Marnie) is very similar to me. Art, (social) anxiety, love of beautiful places and there storys, politeness in person accept when being afraid and stressed in certain situations. English isn't my first language, so it's hard to explain. But those 2 movies (out of every movie in the world) hit me the most everytime I watch them, but on a comforting level. I watch them when I don't want to feel alone. Thank you for this video.. I hape I can visit Japan someday :)

Hollywood and Ghibli are totally different worlds... not sure if its "East vs West" so much as "giant corporations vs small passionate studio with a genius leading it." I definitely prefer the Ghibli style though, I wish we had our own Ghibli type studio in the west! Most Hollywood movies annoy me for exactly the reasons you explained.
Btw, Howl's moving castle was actualy based on a book by English writer Dianna Wynn Jones. You should read it! Good luck on your novel :)

While we don't have a Ghibli like studio in the west 😔 we do have some stop motion animation studios that are just as passionate about their art, one being Laika studios which is located in Oregon I think. Although, it's co-owner is a Nike rep so I don't know if calling it a small studio built from the groundup would be accurate. So far tho, their movies have been good and it looks like they focus more on making what they like than making money (but then again stop motion takes forever and obvi they want to earn more then what they spent making it 😱)

I used to write a lot when i was a kid, but then stopped abruptly around middle school even though it was something I loved to do. These past few days I have been cleaning out my old childhood stuff and found my stories and felt the need to go back to writing again. And lo and behold I find a yt channel about writing AND loves studio Ghibli?!?! I'm taking it as a sign 😆😂

Ghibli films puts nature and humanity in its base. The daily work, the way you react, the determination of yours, little happiness or sadness is portraited with subtle music. It values the natural emotion and understanding among people and gives significance to nonhuman like character or animals. It shows our archetype in it. Why I like ghibli is because its not extravagant, it simply tells the story. It makes protagonist relatable. Other character have certain typical features borrowed from folktales and culture. The protagonist isn't someone with special- born prodigy, they are like us. And in the end, humanity wins. Its strictly against corruption brought by industrial and scientific civilization that distort peacefulness. everything in it has meaning and teaches us to value pleasant things in life and care for others. It mostly include teenagers and their journey to become something desirable and accepting. Thank you for the video!

Brilliant...Also Ghibli's use of time and pause effectively creating negative space as a character or mood.

    • @hellotyne5365
      @hellotyne5365  3 года назад

You know I think you're absolutely right. I don't think much about negative space in film, sound, or character often but I'm sure a lot of movie moments are made brilliant through the use of the pause

American sarcasm frustrated me, because it takes so many deep moments away.

I loved anime for a long time and I love other stories and so on but Studio Ghibli stories have so much plot, meaning, and so much more. Most animes now are mostly focused on anime that it loses that touch of heart to it. Ghibli feels so natural and more meaningful. I wish that people who are interested in Ghibli and anime will take the emotions they felt with Ghiblis stories will give that spark of life to anime again.

In recent years I've mostly considered movies to be the "low-grade" entertainment form. It's fast, it's easy to write, actors work less, and movies receive a lot of attention because they are supposed to be great and they go to the movie theater. Thus, have big time earnings...
Every time I watch a movie, I have low expectations, that way I don't get as disappointed. HOWEVER, Ghibli movies are a jewel, and it is because of the beautiful detail and simplicity they deliver. For a while I've been wondering what was it that makes their scenes "boring", yet so interesting and beautiful. I say "boring" because it may seem boring to most people because sometimes there's not much going on in many scenes of their different movies, but they make that simplicity SO interesting just by adding details.

Thank you. I'm writing a book and your video popped up. Normally RUclipsrs abuse editing tools to convey narrative in a visual way, yet you're putting yourself in front of a camera. To me that looks like honestly as much as it looks like isolation. Either way you're putting real effort into something that is useful, coherent and positive. So really once more thanks.

Hello Jay! I am working on a cozy fantasy novel right now and watched a few pixar movies, comparing them to my plot. I always found pixar plots neat and clever, every piece had a purpose, but that was not the vibe I was or still am going for with my cozy fantasy. Today it hit me on a walk: I would not like to write a pixar movie, but rather a ghibli one. I don‘t know how the publishers in Germany are going to react to the exposé and the text, but I am really excited for the next book fair, when my agent is going to pitch the idea. Your video was really lovely to get my head going and I hope you are doing well! :)

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love.
Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die".
BUT, mercy said "I dont want to give them what they deserve. I don't want them to be cut off from Me. I love them despite all they have done/will do against Me. I want to give My children another chance. I want them to come home and live in My love again".
And love said "Jesus, God's Son, came down as a Man, our representative, suffering every temptation, pain and struggle we have ever faced, yet without sin. He took all our sins (past/present/ even future) to the cross and then crucified EVERY ONE on our behalf. Justice was paid on the cross so that we can be free from Hell's punishment, experience Gods mercy of forgiveness of sin and live in His love. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (turn away from our sin and pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life.
He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.
He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through Him (not ourselves as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction). So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to obey His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and ask Him to help us in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, or struggling or doubtful, simply be honest and tell Him that. He is not intimidated by ANY sin or struggle you are facing. ANY. He hears and will answer. If we pray for Him to come in, regardless of the condition, then He will.
NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER.
If you have any questions let me know
    Xxx
