I always thought Jack and Jill were siblings and the moral was “be careful when going up and down hills”.

Humpty dumpty was actually a story about a huge cannon which fell off a castle wall and it was so heavy that all the kings horses and all the kings men couldnt put it back on the wall, humpty dumpty was never an egg until childrens picture books made him one

I've heard that one too. I think the idea that he was an egg came from Lewis Carroll (or rather John Tenniel's illustrations to Through The Looking-Glass), although I could be wrong there. Originally (post-cannon of course) I think he was just meant to be a person who resembled an egg, since "humpty-dumpty" used to be slang for a short, clumsy person.

Not slaves. They are free to leave and work for whoever they want. If they had a better job they would do it. Those jobs are better than the alternative to what they can do ie subsistence farming

Mark Antill they aren’t getting injured all the time like in the 19th century. China has gone from poor to the worlds second richest economy and has lifted more people out of poverty than anyone at any time of history thanks to their hard work and the west using them as place to manufacture their stuff.
It's not all that moral to 'help' quit child labor in textile mills. If they lose their jobs, they are forced to even more dangerous work, since they basically have to support themselves somehow. I know it's wrong, but that's the unfortunate reality.
@@mikitz and there you go, using the defense of the oppressor / slave master. You realize that your lazy argument has been used for centuries, right? Promulgated by those in power to keep the masses subjugated. When we in the US abolished child labor, it created a booming economy. Why? Because labor shortages forced manufacturers to pay better wages in order to keep workers. More take home pay means more spending which in turn creates demand.
The children, free from hours and hours of labor, could now focus on school and gain better skills to work in more advanced industries which in turn, again, generates demand and wealth.
But that little history lesson won't convince you. You've already made up your mind on how the world is..which is why you commented. A comment, I might add that has no bearing on my original post. In the short few lines I wrote, I didn't mention abolishing child labor. I only pointed out the reality of branding.
Ricky has the quite unique ability to be at once devastatingly funny, and present a well-considered, incisive world view on a range of issues. LOVE this guy.
I was taught that these old poems and rhymes were satirical jabs at the royals, politics and news of the day using moral lessons. Sung by traveling minstrals, discovering the meanings behind these nursery songs are facinating.

I'd never heard the Colchester Cannon theory. I was led to believe that Humpty Dumpty was King Charles the first, who was executed after losing power to Oliver Cromwell's army. The King's horses and men who could not restore Charles to power were the Cavaliers, who were defeated in the English Civil War by the Roundheads. A fall from grace of epic proportions, and a reference to the fragile hold that the British Monarchy had on power at that time, and which it has never regained. But the cannon story is a good one, too.
Just a thought, but I was always under the impression that the moral to humpty dumpty was that somethings that are broken can never be mended (most likely referring to relationships) so you should be careful of things you don't want to lose. Especially since humpty dumpty (egg or not) is supposed to be seen as a person which I figure insinuates that he can't just be replaced.

Many years ago there was a fellow named Johnny Standley, who did a hilarious comedy routine all about Little Bo Peep. It was one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard for the time. Ricky has resurrected the genre beautifully with his take on other nursery rhymes, albeit with a different vocabulary. Hysterical.

The 45RPM of Johnny Standley is titled "It's In The Book" and pt 1 is the Little Bo Peep dissection and pt 2 is a song about Grandma's Lye Soap. "Little Herman and Brother Therman had an aversion to washing their ears. Grandma scrubbed them with the lye soap and they haven't heard a word in years!" 😁

To me (even now knowing the real story of Humpty Dumpty) it never explicitly said humpty was an egg, so to me as a kid it was" just don't fall off walls or you will be broken ". A fall from a good height could break a person's bones/skull so it made sense to me XD

When I was teaching I never forced a child to apologize. That upset a lot of people who would insist the student must understand what they've done is wrong. I would tell them it's been explained, the child understands and if they're not sorry about it I'm not going to teach them to lie. It was a very unpopular stance despite it's effectiveness.
You have admitted your teachings were unpopular, but you did not show us how they were effective. Do you not teach WHY a child should be sorry? The process of apologizing is part of teaching a child to recognize their mistake and to recognize they have hurt others. It's a tool for teaching compassion. Creating a narrow viewpoint on apologies is not effective teaching. It just makes life harder for the person you "taught".

I remember actually learning that wolf story back in Kindergarten, which is the german equivalent for daycare or preschool if Im not mistaken. It used to be very popular to tell kids this story with the morale saying: ,,Wer einmal lügt dem glaubt man nicht, auch wenn er dann die Wahrheit spricht." Which basically means: If you lie to people they'll tend to not believe you, even if it's the truth.

If Im not mistaken the american Kindergarten describes what the german call the preschool or Vorschule. In germany that's only in the ages of 5-6, whilst the first years would in amreica be the nursery or something like that. If Im mistaken I do apologyze ^^

Honey. Humpty Dumpty was a cannon that broke. It was heavy and massive. That’s why the horses and king’s men (military) couldn’t put it back together again.
So I would say, the moral is don’t build heavy difficult cannons for image, rather than function.

@@anyajohnson7965 They were built big for function, not image. So they could fire further than the enemy's cannon. It didn't break, the wall was shot and damaged underneath it. It was probably hard to recover because they were under attack at the time; they'd obviously got it onto the all in the first place.
I went to school with Morales, cool dude from Argentina, and boy could he dance! I’m glad kids are getting the chance to learn about him.

Absolutely. See it all the time on the brief synopsis of an article on the sites of major newspapers and the like here, the sorts of errors I had "corrected out of me" by the time I was 10yo if not younger.
I point people to George Orwell's essay titled "Politics and the English Language" if they don't accept that such things matter.
We have the problem of teachers themselves being largely ignorant of language (the younger they are the worse it is) because they themselves were taught by those who were ignorant and, worst of all, the switch to 24hr electronic sources means most people DON'T READ BOOKS by great authors. Of course journalism isn't helped by a dying business model as everyone let Google and Facebook steal everything (more or less). I thought that was astounding as I watched it happening.
