Sure, no problem, Mr. Harrison, . I am gonna do it right now.......and it took me a2 fucken weeks to even count like that without getting itno brain damage (ACV) hahahahahahaha --
Oh this is actually not very difficult. What's difficult is the smoothness with which he plays all the groupings together. Otherwise the concept is quite easy to practice.
Oh yeah ... just that easy. Been playing for 20 years and I'm fairly good but watching Gavin's lessons makes me wanna quit. Jesus dude. "No problem ... just accent 16/145th notes on the end of the quite ghost notes of the 13 count of the 7/8 signature but understand that it's all syncopated for the first half of the measure and then count 35 in your head." Yup. Got it.
Fantastic. I can't even play drums but I watch Gavin's educational videos with awe. I think Gavin should keep doing lots of educational stuff to pass on his top-shelf musicianship.
He is the Albert Einstein of drumming... I swear to god, he is so imformative, and creative... The groove @ 2:45 is insanely awesome, and managed to overlap such a odd number with the pulse of the hi hat... That is the sign of true talent, and awareness of a drummer. I also seen him play live in many videos, and he is very aware of what he plays, and when or what to embellish, when playing,,, I think he is the English version of Benny Greb also :P
This is very cool. Gavin you are a scholar and gentle man. If I mix your style with Dave Weckl's style,,,, I may pass out from the glorious interlude. Funnily,, when I awoke, my drums where smiling at me.
Oh, come on. It's true that Gavin puts a lot of technical stuff in his compositions (I recall he said once that King Crimson guys complained about he always try to do very technical stuff even in minimal passages) but it doesn't mean he doesn't have groove. He has, but is like a "baroque groove". Besides of his technique, Gavin is widely recognized by his wide range of dynamics. Playing with no groove at all is like Mike Portnoy, George Kollias, Joey Jordison, Tony Roister Jr. or any of those.
I just laugh... Literally... It's all I can do... so many technicians but there is some type of difference, some type of soulful thread through Gavin's playing
awesome! this is actually not that difficult if you really study it and practice it - and once you have a new exercise down make it your own , add & subtract to your liking
not only the best drummer past, present and future but his drums are tuned SO GOOD!!! they actually could be considered tuned instruments, I think he could actually play melodys on them. the tone is so pure and cuts like a knife. I don't play anymore but if I did I would definitely want to play on Sonor drums. I have never heard a kit sound so good as Gavin's, so consistently awesome, those Sonor drums really sing!!!
By solo stuff do you mean songs like 19 days and those songs? He has a project with 05ric which is really difficult drum wise. Great musicianship but the vocals aren't that good at all. Good for prog fans though. Beside that he just has a load of session credits on artists albums. There's a funky tune called Always there by incognito I really like. It's on youtube, with a version with just programmed drums and one with gavin on it. Thats the one to listen to.
well, just because you don't play a genre of music doesn't mean as a musician you shouldn't have every available resource at your disposal. Look at a guy like Derek Roddy, he can play death metal as good or better than anyone, but can also swing
Yeah I agree. His double bass style is wonderful, he uses triplets and the like really tastefully. A lot of metal drummers use the same boring 16th note patterns. Gavins main gig these days is metal these days though, the prog side of metal mainly.
he says 'triplets' but then the text says 'actually two 32nd and a 16th note". these two things are not the same in my opinion (regardless of the fact that both consist of 3 notes). anyway, great video as always
I disagree deadboy. Gavin is highly musical and inventive. African and Latin drummers are extremely naturally skilled in odd groupings and polyrhythms. Doesnt mean they dont play from the heart.
Benny Greb suggests using U-ni-ver-si-ty for counting five and li-sten-to-the-ra-di-o for seven (university and listen to the radio. Works for counting slower at least :)
That's fine that you feel that way. However, just because you don't "feel" that he "feels" it, doesn't mean he doesn't "feel" it. I feel the fuck out of it.
Simply not true. 1. He smiles while he plays quite often, I've seen him live. 2. Saying Gavin doesn't groove is laughable and immediately discredits you.
Nice lesson for the working drummer with personal home studio to practice ...but it's not too simple like Gavin says!! Some things may wants too much practice to catch them!!!!!!
This video makes me feel the need to barf. In a good way. Somehow. Like... I feel it in my diaphragm. All I can do is laugh my ass off in response to how unbelievably amazing Gavin Harrison is, especially with that perfectly seamless double bass. I watch him doing that and it's like I can't even breathe. Tension builds in my stomach instinctively, and my mind doesn't want to accept what my ears are hearing.
This video is a very fine example why music theory is very important (also for drummers), because honestly (whether you're skilled enough to do these licks or not) this makes perfect sense. It's 'just' counting and using a bit of math.
It's like a recipe, if you cover something in red pepper and mustard, yeah there will be a lot of flavor, but it doesn't mean it's good. A little bit in the right place is important, the subtlety of his techniques make them stand out more to me. This being said I can't imagine trying to play some of the things he does.
Will try to listen to the OSI stuff soon hopefully. I've heard of 05Ric. I really like the Circles album. The singing on it however, not everyone is going to like. I agree though, drum parts are amazing, so complicated. I enjoy some of the vocal melodies. I'm pretty open minded to them but as I said before not everyone enjoys 05 Rics singing.
You think nobody reads music anymore because you waste your time around people who haven't taken the time to learn the skill. Any ensemble dealing with a large amount of players is going to use music. Even small ensembles will use music to 1. Play unrehearsed music spontaneously 2. Have an extent of reference for the purpose of comfortability When I started taking drum lessons, my teacher skipped the bullshit and taught me to read before anything else. Now, I can't thank him enough.
this odd grouping stuff sounds very complex the first time you approach to it. But is extremely simple...just that we are not exposed to those groupings in pop and rock music. Same goes for jazz, i used to think it was an imposible thing to do, but after knowing some concepts you realize is very doable (at some extent).....just remember that in any odd grouping you have at least one accent followed by two unaccented notes.....group of 3 = TÁ ta ta 5 = TÁ ta TÁ ta ta 7= TÁ ta TÁ ta TÁ ta ta
He's on the last two OSI albums. haven't heard them though. I think it's heavy prog rock. Just look for the albums he did as a session drummer before porcupine tree. Should be on his websites or around the net somewhere :)
Check out Gavins playing on a song called Chalk Lines by Lo Fi Resistance. Great playing again and a really good song, really enjoying that song at the moment. i bought it off their bandcamp page
He really does make it simple to understand. Benny Greb teaches the odd groupings in his Language Of Drumming and it really is easy with a little bit of practice.
Seriously. I never got any of the vibes deadboy600 refers to. Gavin's been my favorite drummer ever since I discovered him precisely because he brings that groove or soul into the technical drumming, unlike say, Mike Mangini.
I've always thought of them as rock, but there is an undeniable metal side to it. They're one of those bands that don't really fall into typical genres.
Woaow... I'm speechless... The way he's mastering all these licks is absolutely fantastic. I can feel the hours and hours he passed on working this kind of chops.
+Drew Drew Of course we're newbies. That's why we're looking up drum lessons on RUclips. Please try and understand that, to beginners, this *IS* that ridiculous. We're intimidated, but also intrigued. Condescension doesn't really help us, though. Edit: some formatting
Sure, no problem, Mr. Harrison, it is clear as a day and easy as fuck. I am gonna do it right now
Exactly. Said no one ever!
Sure, no problem, Mr. Harrison, . I am gonna do it right now.......and it took me a2 fucken weeks to even count like that without getting itno brain damage (ACV) hahahahahahaha --
lmao guys
Oh this is actually not very difficult. What's difficult is the smoothness with which he plays all the groupings together. Otherwise the concept is quite easy to practice.
lmao!

Yup. Got it.
You really got a problem with that? ;-)
this comment again?
"And now i'll mix up the 5's, 3's and 7's" **melodic minigun**
What
¯\_ ツ _/¯
Yup, got it. Now it's easy.
Fantastic. I can't even play drums but I watch Gavin's educational videos with awe. I think Gavin should keep doing lots of educational stuff to pass on his top-shelf musicianship.
Not only a great drummer, also a great teacher.
He is the Albert Einstein of drumming... I swear to god, he is so imformative, and creative... The groove @ 2:45 is insanely awesome, and managed to overlap such a odd number with the pulse of the hi hat...
That is the sign of true talent, and awareness of a drummer. I also seen him play live in many videos, and he is very aware of what he plays, and when or what to embellish, when playing,,,
I think he is the English version of Benny Greb also :P
That groove is basically the groove from the end of the song "Unsettled" by Gavins solo project with 05ric
fuzzylogiceire Regardless, it is still amazing, that he managed to come up with a groove as such :D
metallicarocks911 Oh it is of course. Just pointing out when he used that groove in a song. :)
Or benny Greb is the German Gavin Harrison?🤣
I love how he never plays "metal" or "death metal" but he has a perfect double bass technique.
this reminds me of the first few minutes of opeth's DELIVERANCE!
Amazing technique and knowledge aside.. One of the best sounding kits ever..
This is very cool. Gavin you are a scholar and gentle man. If I mix your style with Dave Weckl's style,,,, I may pass out from the glorious interlude. Funnily,, when I awoke, my drums where smiling at me.
Had no clue it was only 4 notes on the bass drum to make you sound like a god. This is life changing
Yep. But doing it with the ultra precision and class of Gavin.... :-)
Oh, come on. It's true that Gavin puts a lot of technical stuff in his compositions (I recall he said once that King Crimson guys complained about he always try to do very technical stuff even in minimal passages) but it doesn't mean he doesn't have groove. Playing with no groove at all is like Mike Portnoy, George Kollias, Joey Jordison, Tony Roister Jr. or any of those.
This is the funnest lesson I've practiced on my set in a long time!
The most talented, musical, technically genius and humble drummer.
I just laugh... Literally... It's all I can do... so many technicians but there is some type of difference, some type of soulful thread through Gavin's playing
his 5/2 time is just 3/2 time right> and your double bass pedal hits are ridiculously clean.
no, his 5/4? is 5/4.
yeah. that's what I meant
A lot of this is inspired from Indian percussion system.I recommend every drummer to look it up.
Ishan Dave Great observation. You can hear those tabla rhythms.
He made that so clear. Awesome lesson
awesome! this is actually not that difficult if you really study it and practice it -
and once you have a new exercise down make it your own , add & subtract to your liking
his skills... unbelievable :o
Where is this from? Which DVD?
His bass drum playing is beautiful. Really 'musical', not just gratuitous cliché BRRRRRs.
not only the best drummer past, present and future but his drums are tuned SO GOOD!!! they actually could be considered tuned instruments, I think he could actually play melodys on them. the tone is so pure and cuts like a knife. 4:09 Heck yes!!!!

That's fine that you feel that way. However, just because you don't "feel" that he "feels" it, doesn't mean he doesn't "feel" it. I feel the fuck out of it.
Don’t forget he was playing quarter note with his left hand on the hi-hats. Welcome to the polyrhythm...
Simply not true.
1. He smiles while he plays quite often, I've seen him live.
2. Saying Gavin doesn't groove is laughable and immediately discredits you.
I guess it's because, I don't read by music notes, so yeh, but who cares no body reads by music notes, anymore and im never gone a lean it.
Futile pattern
Also Mother and child divided (the initial count of 7 in the beginning of the video)
This man in nothing short of a fucking musical genius, sadly most of couldn't do collectively what he could with one hand!
Okay, should have not said never, good point. I was just saying he has a subtle yet technical style, and I like it.
That is exactly the way i learned to count 7/8 time.
Makes perfect sence.
Of course it's not the same, but many drummers just call any group of 3 notes regardless of note value "triplets"
He has 3 leggs
That's perverted...
That's what she said... :D
@Gavin Harrison still my all time favorite, brother. Inspiration for a lifetime.
Thanks Gavin, I did the entire thing, and then I woke up!
One day I pray soon I'll be able to afford a higher-end sonar drum kit
Nice lesson for the working drummer with personal home studio to practice ...but it's not too simple like Gavin says!! Some things may wants too much practice to catch them!!!!!!
This is how a double bass pedal SHOULD be used. Tastefully. Good ol Gav
What? Have you even listened to any of Porcupine Trees material from the last 10 years?
Ill tell you the truth, I suck at double kick peadls im only better with one peadl.
Those drums sound immense!
What does he do other than Porcupine Tree? I've only seen that and his solo stuff.
This video makes me feel the need to barf. In a good way. Somehow. Like... I feel it in my diaphragm. God, how can a human produce such fuck'n precision fills. Sounds like an old-school, analog typewriter driven by some kind of sacred timing chain
I think he still does. Theres 2 drummers in the band. He's one of them.
This video is a very fine example why music theory is very important (also for drummers), because honestly (whether you're skilled enough to do these licks or not) this makes perfect sense. It's 'just' counting and using a bit of math.
whoever said that white guys have no rhythm never met Gavin Harrison
And this ladies and gents us the end lick for 'Unsettled'
What kind of remo head does Gavin use on the snare? batter side
he still think in integers! think in real numbers :P
I really appreciate players that have versatility
K zildjian hi hats.....kick ass ! 🎶🎸🎼
Sometimes I think you don't need your hands to play drums.
This is rly good but the recording could be better (although to be fair this isn’t a photography channel)
That is what all Tom's should sound like
Stinking shit you are good . Mind if I stopped by for a lesson ?
Cool😎 sonor snare ? What kind?
I think it's from a U.K. drum magazine... Rhythm maybe?
It's like a recipe, if you cover something in red pepper and mustard, yeah there will be a lot of flavor, but it doesn't mean it's good. This men is from space I Think.!
1:10 somewhere in "Futile"...
He's on the last two OSI albums. haven't heard them though. I think it's heavy prog rock. Just look for the albums he did as a session drummer before porcupine tree. Should be on his websites or around the net somewhere :)
He does play prog-metal with Porcupine Tree :)
How many time signatures does this imply?! lol
This is why he’s Robert Fripps
Check out Gavins playing on a song called Chalk Lines by Lo Fi Resistance. Great playing again and a really good song, really enjoying that song at the moment. i bought it off their bandcamp page
Pay attention at the back !! I'll be asking questions later !!
He really does make it simple to understand. Benny Greb teaches the odd groupings in his Language Of Drumming and it really is easy with a little bit of practice.

still love your work!!
Those drums sound perfect
That sounds very Cool, with Double kicks, but I still like my one peadl doubles. Nice and Awesome Kicks, You are Awesome Thanks.
F great fills/solo elements. You let it sound so easy...
Man this made me splooge
Is this video from some Gavin´s DVD?
A lot of people have really good technique and don't play "Metal". Like JP Bouvet, just as one example.
His double bass is so fast 😳 amazing drummer!
E che ci vuole.... 😂
You guys sound like a bunch of newbie nerds. This is not that ridiculous. Not at all. If u can't play it, that's fine just keep practicing

got damm those drums sound like nothing iv ever, what a clear sound they make wonderful.
damn son
It's more of a pinch and twist.
ok thanks, didn't know that. i was taught to always make distinction betweem the two
I know that if you use one kick peadl, you get a crap, but this is Awesome.
I just had a stroke
Fucking Dirty!(In a good way)
