  • Looking for an awesome Homemade Gravy for Turkey, Biscuits, and More? It seems that everyone else is! As we get close to Thanksgiving. I have been getting a lot of requests for my 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐲 recipe. This universal gravy recipe is perfect for Thanksgiving turkey, breakfast biscuits, mashed potatoes, and more.
If you follow the Cuban Redneck channel on RUclips, you are probably aware that I have quite an eclectic group of friends. They range from northeasters, including New Yorkers who think they know a lot about food and cooking but they don't, all the way down to southern hillbillies that have to have bacon on everything that is not fried! It is challenging to please everyone if you bring all these people to a cookout or even Thanksgiving. A while back, I started to tingle with my 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐲 recipe. I took ingredients of a classic northeastern turkey gravy, added parts from a southern white gravy, and a touch of heat! This combination seems to please everyone and provides an option not only for those looking for an easy turkey gravy they can pre-make for Thanksgiving but an excellent recipe for a good old southern country breakfast with biscuits and gravy. Not only that, but this super easy and quick 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐲 is the perfect excuse to avoid those MSG and sodium-loaded options at the local grocery store.
    𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬:
    • 1 Cup of Whole Milk
    • 1 Cup of Chicken Broth
    • 1 Cup of Vegetable Broth
    • 3 Slices of Bacon
    • ¼ Cup of All Purpose Flour
    • 1 Cup of Onion & Bell Pepper Mixture
    • 1 Tablespoon of Minced Garlic
    • ½ Teaspoon of Rosemary, Thyme, and Chili Flakes
    • Salt & Pepper to Taste!
    𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐲?
If it weren't for rendering some bacon fat, this 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐲 recipe would take 5 minutes to make. That's right, so if you make bacon for breakfast, put aside some of that fat. It may come on handy! Let's begin by mixing wet ingredients, our milk, chicken stock, and vegetable broth, and have them on standby. We then need to pre-measure the dry spices (Rosemary, Thyme, and Chili Flakes) and place them in a small dish, as I mentioned in the video. The chili flakes are an option, but I think they give the gravy an excellent character that contrasts nicely against heavy meats like turkey. With all of that ready to go, we can start by rendering our bacon fat.
Place the slices of bacon in a deep skillet over medium heat. Please know that this is also optional; you can use butter, olive oil, and even lard as a substitute. I usually have bacon in my fridge during the holidays, so I opted to use bacon fat. The best way to cook bacon and general and have it render the most amount of fat is low and slow! So, keep the temp no higher than medium and let the bacon do its thing. Once the bacon is done, remove it and place it in a dish with a paper towel. At this time, we can start working on the onion and bell pepper mix. Cook that for 3-4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another minute. Then place everything in a food processor jar, add a bit of the broth mixture, and pure to a fine texture.
We can now put everything together. It is hard to tell how much fat you will get from any one piece of bacon, but at the end of the day, you will need equal parts grease and flour. We need a ¼ cup of flour to thicken our gravy, so if you have additional fat, consider using butter as I did. After meeting the butter, we can start adding flour a little bit at a time while stirring it. We are looking for the flour to turn a light caramel color. This usually takes 2-3 minutes. Stir in the broth mixture, add the dry spices, and continue over medium heat until the desired consistency is achieved.
This is it, folk. Thank you for watching. I hope you try my homemade gravy recipe, and I look forward to bringing a new recipe next week. Until then, happy eating!
