    I feel like that's a big problem people nowadays face. Because they've gone through so much alone, they can't really articulate their vision to other members when working in a team and end up being assholes. Great video, really digging the podcast Matt. Keep it up!

    As a scientist, I found this extremely relatable. While you are talking about filmmakers, the collaborative environment matches my experience working on a research team. We are trying to make something, share a message, and leadership and communication really effects how well the lab works. We work with complex equipment, and our team has a variety of skill sets, but recognizing leadership of a creative team is what we demand of our leader, and the leadership each member takes over their projects. Thanks for delivering that point so eloquently!

    The promise of collaboration is one of the key reasons I enjoy filmmaking. I want to work with people, not compete against them or myself. It's why scriptwriting is more appealing to me than writing a novel; one invites a team of people to create something together, the other is done alone with whiskey and sat in French cafes... hang on...

    I needed to hear this. Currently finishing up a semester at college and there are a lot of group projects to turn in. Being a senior, I tend to lead my groups and I've been having a hard time with them not being on the same page as I am. It's been infuriating, but this was insightful and gave me a different point of view. Thanks Matt!

      I had a small group communication class in college. The final project was a group exercise to create content for one person to present in front of the class. My group included four young Vietnamese students who appointed me the leader and speaker for the final project because I was a white guy. They screamed racism when the instructor, a black woman, gave me all their points for doing all the work. They couldn't provide documentation that they did anything for the final project. Sometimes as a leader you need to shoulder all the work when the team goes sideways.

    So many things come to mind seeing this... I used to work in commercial production in NY. So I get the film making side. I am not an outdoor educator and for a long time I taught leadership for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) - most people don't understand leadership, or emulate it poorly. Leadership exists on a continuum. From collaborative to dictatorial. Sometimes collaborative is the way to go. Sometimes you need to be a dictator. But in film, I think if you are a director, and you have a vision, so many people try and get in the way of that vision that you might need to be a little bit of an asshole to get it on film.

    This advice is so multi disciplinary! I particularly enjoyed the sentiment about how important it is to develop a descriptive language so you can communicate well with others. I teach flute, and the longer I teach, the better my "descriptive vocabulary" gets.

    As a filmmaker one of the hardest things you can do is stop editing your own work once you've gotten into the habit of doing it. I still edit many of my own projects I've directed including feature films, but as was said, once you do try working with an editor you learn so much more. Does not mean you can't edit your own work, but there is such a perspective gained in the collaboration.

    Great video Matt, brilliant point made about getting defensive: being a leader myself I realised that you need certain skills like understanding the people you work with, in order to produce quality results and maintain harmony in the team.

    Excellent advice for any budding leaders out there. I really want to send this to my boss, he's stuck in defensive mode and has been for years. It really hinders the entire team making positive progress. Listening to your team's ideas and suggestions is an essential skill if you want to achieve success in general. Great video and relevant to all industries.

    The first time I stepped into a role of leadership for film, was at a wedding. The couple wanted photos and video all day and a photobooth. That was so stressful the first time, having only one shot and managing 4 other people. We got it done, but I wasn't always the nicest guy. It's important to set an expectation to the people who are working with you, to yes give creative feedback, but also not to argue, to actually listen, especially when you have only seconds to make it work.

    When I had to lead teams or technical projects, I tend to take over on all the duties. And it's easy to just lose my mind. But once we separated our duties and identified stuff we can work on, the projects moved along. I tried my best to rope everyone into the project but by the end, I felt drained from the experience.

    The rocks calling collect tweet means you need to offer him value to connect with you. You are asking him to give you more value than you are giving him. I know you already know this, as you’ve done lots of collabs and you know your business. If you use your skills as a film maker to create something emotional and inspirational that promotes him and his brand, he might meet with you. Maybe you have already done it, but something along those lines where you are helping him in a big way. He has no reason to not meet with you if you can help him out.

      I was trying to point out how not to be an asshole in during an interview. Where you are the lead in most since. Narcissism is a bitch.

      Are you playing the narcissism card? I get accused of being a narcissist all the time because I don't listen to my "peers" who say I'm too fat, too old and too ugly be on RUclips. You can't develop a personal brand without putting yourself out there for the world to see.

      No I was not trying to brand anyone as narcissistic. I was trying to state that being a leader is not about I and me but more about us and we. The best leaders guide employees by publicly recognizing employee strength and guide ones mistakes privately to better fit with the leaders vision. Once the leader focus on self accomplishment and not the employees as a team you become an a$s4o]e. @s5h0lə = narcissism in most cases but not all.
