  • During the 1989 NFL season, the New England Patriots cut quarterback Tony Eason, and he was claimed on waivers by the New York Jets. And initially, Eason refused to report to the team because the Jets had Ken O'Brien on their roster. The bizarre reason why he didn't want to play with O'Brien? Turns out, the two men were best friends, and Eason was willing to sacrifice his NFL career so as not to ruin their relationship

Tony Eason was always a good person & got to experience success in helping to get his team to a Super Bowl beating Dan Marino’s Dolphins (only team to beat the 15-1 Bears) & defeat in being pummeled & benched in that SB vs the brutal 1985 Bears. He saw the Pats bring in Doug Flutie & saw his Hall of Fame WR Head Coach Raymond Berry fired by Victor Kiam. And Ken O’Brien was also another one of the hood guys of the game in both victory & defeat. They both had good attitudes & were more than their jobs.

I don’t think you realize Tony was a pro bowl caliber quarterback but wrecked his throwing shoulder in ‘87 against the Raiders and could never throw the ball the same.
However, he was still the best option the Patriots had until they drafted Bledsoe in ‘93. They should have kept him because the guys they used from ‘89 - ‘92 were absolutely pathetic and the main reason they were at the bottom of the league during this time.

    1. Fun fact, Eason was the only quarterback taken in the first round in 1983 to not be interviewed in 30 for 30’s “Elway to Marino”.
    2. This is like when LeBron (seemingly) made his friendship with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh the determining factor to “Take his talents to South Beach”. LeBron could get away with that type of thinking. Eason in 1989 could not.
    3. Eason played for two of the three AFC teams that were eliminated from playoff contention going into the final week of the 1989 season. This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about how one of them, the Patriots, almost eliminated the Rams from the playoffs in the last game.

Going into the 83 draft there was a very, very good chance that the NY Giants were going to take Eason at #10 as at the time Phil Simms was looking more and more like a bust.
Now, I loved Phil Simms but while he did have some really great games and good seasons now and again he was basically an above average QB for the totality of his career.
Eason in his prime was a VERY good NFL QB despite the fact that he was constantly under pressure by defensive lines every time he dropped back for a pass. He got beaten up pretty bad and by the time he was 28 he was shell shocked and a shadow of his former self. It was sad to see because he was pretty fantastic.
I would have loved to see Eason on the Parcell led 80's Giants with a better offensive line, a much more consistent running game and far better targets to throw to.
He's one of those "what if" players that despite some success with the team that drafted him, probably would have had a much longer, far better career with another team.
