  • A man rips a hole in the ceiling.
ERNIE is used with permission from Hadley Hillel. Learn more at hadleyhillel.com.
Ernie has led a quiet, sad life. His childhood was troubled and lonely, he burned the family business to the ground and he has never been able to earn the approval of his father. Now an old man, he has had no loved ones or family -- he only has his job knitting tea cozies. On his 70th birthday, having done nothing memorable or in his life, Ernie decides to end it.
His suicide attempt is unsuccessful, however, and punctures a hole in his ceiling. But he soon develops a bond with a young boy who lives upstairs -- a friendship that pulls Ernie out of his lifelong despair and helps bring hope and connection back into his world.
Written and directed by Hadley Hillel, this fantasy short has the feel of a modern fable, both in its uniquely stylized look and production design and in the voiceover that opens the film. With richly literary and formal language, the narrator sets up a character and situation that speaks of a stifled life -- a man who, though alive, has not quite lived or loved fully. This isn't Ernie's fault, because his family life has been neglectful and he's suffered much tragedy and bad luck. But it has hobbled his ability to make connections and see the richness of the world around him.
Production design often plays a highlighted role in fantasy, though the storytelling leverages this tool of craft in a unique way. Rather than aiming for a sumptuous, heightened fantasy realm -- think classic tales like THE LORD OF THE RINGS but also the highly stylized films of Wes Anderson -- almost the entirety of the film's physical surroundings, including buildings, objects and decorations, are rendered in the humble, ordinary material of cardboard.
Ernie's surroundings are not whimsical, inspiring marvel and joy. Instead, their uniform "brownness" emphasizes the dryness and monotony of Ernie's world. The only signs of color are in the knitting that Ernie does, both as a way to cope with stress as a kid, as part of his job when he's older, and as a way to help out the boy upstairs.
The narrative action and the overall expressiveness picks up when the two main characters begin to interact with one another. Though they have no dialogue as characters, the actors deliver their rich performances, particularly lead actor Gary Gorland as Ernie. Played as mild and quiet on the surface, he carries an air of existential despair within him. But he also possesses an innate kindness and sensitivity, which has an opportunity to bloom when he makes friends with his neighbor.
They're also helped along by a rich and charming score, which adds life and vibrancy to the film's forward movement, especially as the friendship between the man and the young boy grows. They see in one another a mutual solitude and loneliness, and come to one another's rescue at a crucial moment when they need one another most.
The worldview of ERNIE -- imbued in its voiceover, its approach to emotion and its construction of character -- is fascinating in that it doesn't minimize human suffering. An undertow of melancholy suffuses the film, and both its main characters grapple with profound loneliness emerging from familial neglect and pain. Yet they are able to see one another through: the boy helps remind Ernie of what is worth living for, and Ernie gives the love and acceptance he wanted from his own father to the boy, serving as a father figure.
The ending of ERNIE is sweet and heartwarming, but it is well-earned, especially in the midst of a world full of pain and dullness. Happiness doesn't come in a vacuum for Ernie: it comes from looking out into the world, seeing himself in another and offering up kindness. In doing so, we not only help others but heal ourselves.

for anyone asking, Everything is made out of cardboard to capture his depression, as a person who's struggled with mental health issues in the past i find it captures it really well. The fact that life is meaningless and bland is shown by the cardboard makes you empathize with the character as he is struggling with his life. The knitting is red as it really stands out against the brown cardboard to show how it's the only thing that gives his life meaning. The old man and the boy are the same person. The movie is showing the process of an old person coming at peace with his unhealed inner child. In his bland world filled up with depression, the first meaningfull thing in his life that he could have posibbly done was starting being kind with himself. The little boy that appeared was just his inner voice, trying to help him heal. At first, the man doesnt give him attention. But after that, not only that he tries to find solutions , but he also tries to give some warmth and love to a small boy who was suffering because of his dads' absence. This portrays the old mans' situation, who never healed from the fact that his father was never actually emotionaly there for him. A fact that resulted in a long life depression in the first place. What happens next shows in a symbolical way the fight that goes inside the old mans mind and heart: the boy at first doesnt want to receive the love, because he cannot accept the situation and come at terms with the reality that his dad is just not there for him. This leads to another suicide attempt. In a desperate way, the child inside the old man tries to find a way out and fights for survival. The parallel between the two of them both almost falling and dying is absolutely genius. The suicide will also "kill" the small boy, who is still trying to find a solution to make him believe that life can be meaningfull. That moment ocurrs when he throws the red yarn. This is also symbolical, of course there was no way and no logic in holding the yarn or keeping the yarn in a pocket during a situation like that, so that was the most obvious scene where one could understand the symbolism of the movie. It's the red yarn, which saved his childhood and helped him survive through trauma, it was the red yarn which helped the small boy take the letter and "reconnect" with his father - even in a distorsed way, and the same red yarn that helped the old guy stop the suicide attempt. The fact that he dropped the yarn in the elevator and he ignored the child who wanted to give it back was actually a symbol of his refuse to comunicate with his own inner child. The red yarn could symbolize hope, love (it belonged to his mother and see that a mother was also present in the elevator) or just That thing that makes him continue. It's interesting that he tries to kill himself with the same thing he clinged to, but the moment he stops refusing/denying and opens his heart to the small boy who is giving back his yarn, he basically saves himself and starts healing. As a response to this step, the small unhealed boy finally "expresses" and meets the old man. It's the moment where the old man finally finds himself, learns to be kind to himself, to love himself and lets the inner child heal. They both heal. The movie shows further how they (the "old" self and the "new" self) learn to be at peace together, while they simply continue doing the same things until then, but covered with acts of self-kindness.
I find it very interesting that the boy is living upstairs - "above". For me this symbolizes that the pure heart is above the mind full of scarred memories.
    (p.s. sorry for my english)

Yeah, sorry Sandra but unless you were a writer on this movie, I think you are putting your own interpretations onto this film, J.R.R Tolkien often hated people making his stories allegories for modern times and I can't help but see that pattern in your writing, you are delving too deep into shallow waters, the message is painfully obvious to anyone with half a brain who has lived through it. While your explanation may be intriguing, as an avid reader of both modern and ancient literature, I am wary of people like you who always try to see too much in what is essentially a cut and dry scenario. If you want to think of it this way sure. But I highly doubt that every little detail you described is necessarily what the original writer envisioned.
Unless you are the creator of this, I do not think you should be taking such liberties with the overall takeaway.
Even musicians do not like defining their music. Because it is pretentious to tell other people how to feel about something everyone takes differently. And it does nothing but diminish the overall worth of said art when someone tacks some silly meaning onto it like an emo kid on a high school message board.

The set and lighting became co stars and the elevator scene was awesome. Sometimes it's the small things that make the we barely notice that makes all the difference. Won't forget this one for a while

This was so beautiful and hard to watch at the same time (suicide is touchy for me). The cardboard and lack of dialogue or color, save for the yarn, were well executed.
