- Pentax Q Review - The Smallest Camera King?
I think the 'Q' in the Pentax Q name stands for Quagmire because this camera is nearly impossible to categorize. On one hand, it's a great portable interchangeable lens camera system, which will appeal to more advanced shooters. Yet on the other hand, the Pentax Q has a point-and-shoot worthy 1/2.3-inch 12-megapixel CMOS sensor inside. As a result, the Pentax Q is the world's first interchangeable lens camera with the smallest sensor, and I'm not quite sure that's something worth boasting about. Below the DSLR level, the digital camera market has APS-C sized mirrorless cameras like the Sony NEX series. Then in come the Micro Four Thirds cameras like the Olympus PEN E-P3 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 with their slightly smaller sensors. Then there's the Nikon J1 with a 1-inch type sensor. A camera like the Pentax Q is just absurd when you look at it in the grand scheme of things. Pentax didn't even opt to go for a 1/1.7-inch chip like the Canon PowerShot S100. They kept things small. I purchased my Q-s1 in Okinawa, with the 1, 2 and 6 lenses, and added vu filters in each, and a polarizer. Best travel camera ever! (I have used several Pentax, Nikon, Olympus and old time Minoltas). Love my Q-s1!
great review bring him back for more camera reviews like the Lumix GX1
DigitalRev has the benefit of a full production crew. Their reviews, while entertaining, are lengthy and not always informative. I am a one man show. I give you almost everything you need in 6-7 minutes so you can make an informed decision. All of these "DIGITALREV IS BETTER" comments are not going to stop me from making reviews for TechnoBuffalo. Maybe someday we'll have a larger budget, but for now I think I do a pretty dang good job by myself regardless of being in the woods or a garage.
This guy has always been a great reviewer. Check out his other reviews on infosync. This guy and Noah are the best reviewers. Always honest and never biased.
Good review - pretty fair and presented well. There are a couple things worth mentioning that make the Q a bit more interesting. One thing not mentioned in his review is the crop factor of 5.5. If you need/ want an extreme telephoto, your 300mm for your DSLR is now a 1650mm and with the new firmware, it is image stabilized. It will be manual focus, but with focus peaking it works fine. Another thing worth mentioning is the increased DOF that a small sensor has - great for macros!
Very nice review! Clear, fun, lots of images and videos... Well done!
Coming from the days of Tri-X,what do you do now days when it comes to your lens collection when it comes to new cameras,do you change the sensor, get a new body or start all over?
I like his guy his stlye goes in deep , I really learned something about the camaras
Great review, Jon keep this guy active!!
I have a Pentax Q10 and I lllloooove this camera!! It takes great photos in black and white or color. I made an example video of a bunch of my first photos. Tiny but powerful little camera! I have 2 lenses for it.
I like this guy. He is more out going and actually have jokes that are somewhat funny. Plus he is just so profetinal/fun.
great review! Mark, I must say I learn something by watching mark's review
You know so much about cameras it would be good if you could upload a video about all exposure and all the rest of it!
I love this guy's reviews!
Woah - where did you go to get that film where the plants where frozen? Im blown away :D
Should I get white or black?
Do these cameras still use UV/Skylight filters?
Yep, I just picked this up on groupon for $200, can't wait to start using it.
I just bought it for 350 with the zoom lens. $1000 was indeed very steep when it came out but it is reasonably priced now.
I can get a Sony NEX-5N with kit zoom for less than the Pentax Q - and the NEX got a 11 (?) times bigger sensor. So, away from the retro styling - which you also can get with the Olympus E-P3 - what's the point of this??
go to any DOF calculator and I think you'll see that cameras with smaller sensors have a larger area in focus at a given aperture and focal length. from Cambridge in Color: "As sensor size increases, the depth of field will decrease for a given aperture (when filling the frame with a subject of the same size and distance). This is because larger sensors require one to get closer to their subject, or to use a longer focal length in order to fill the frame with that subject."
"and it also shoots 1080p video". i love how just about even the smallest devices comming out today can do that.
Where did u get that android model
@doran22 The Chromatic aberrations are because of the lens. ISO issues are because of the sensor. It's worth noting that I also had distortion control on as well. It wasn't only during long exposures that the camera was slow--it was any shooting environment. I've shot plenty of times at long exposures and know that patience is a virtue with digital imaging devices and long shutter speeds.
You forgot to mention the Q has a Magnesium alloy body, just about every other mirrorless camera out there is plastic. Even the equally pricey Sony NEX series is plastic which I feel cheapens it. This is an awesome camera for street photographers though, especially with that stock lens.
is it pocketable?
what that video says is that if you don't change the framing, the depth of field stays the same. But lets say I'm taking a picture of a flower where I want the whole flower to fill the frame. More of the flower will be in focus if I take the shot with the Q than if I take the shot w/ my aps-c camera. So again, if you are shooting macros, the extra dof can be helpful. Maybe I should have said extra dof given the same image framing and aperture...
Black looks cooler, plus the add-on viewfinder only comes in black.
is nikon better or cannon
I want to see more camera videos. This guy is awesome. :) It would be great if Technobuffalo could have a fortnightly if not weekly slot for cameras.
Because swapping lenses does make a difference?
Where does he live? The landscape looks gorgeous!
I own a pentax 7. Best camera I ever owned.
i bet this guy could sell anything and make the infomercial interesting, i almost went out and bought one xD
clearly Q stands for Qute to the power of whatever the version is
Wow, a innovative and decent camera by Pentax. About Time.
more of this guy i i like his reviews!
I don't really care much about cameras, but I loved the review haha.
My dream is this Pentax Q camera with 1" sensor....
Can you please review the Sony NEX-5N?
love the reviews =)
This guy knows what he's talking about, I like him :D
most of the things you are complaining about are because of the lens.
and the reason it takes so long to take pictures at long exposures is noise cancellation. what happens is that it takes another picture in order to get a black photo with the noise of the real photo, and then it removes that noise in the black picture from the real one :)
How much this Camera?
The nikon J1 has a 1 inch size sensor???? I think your wrong..
This camera is like a digital version of the Pentax Auto 110.
Actually the Q beats both the S100 and P7100 for high ISO performance (see DxOMark). Only the S100 has a slightly better overall DxOMark score because it has slightly better dynamic-range.
Personally, I'd take the Q over both of the S100 and P7100 as I prefer the handling and manual controls, and the overall IQ.
Probably Q stands for Qute:)
Sensor size doesn't affect dof.
Seems to me that if you need something more flexible than a digital compact but much smaller than a standard DSLR (some of which are cheaper), this is the camera for you. Or if you have the spare cash and just want to play, no problems. Otherwise, seems you're better off to get an entry-level or secondhand DSLR and don't waste your money. The fact that there are two "novelty" lenses seems a bad sign to me.
Do u live alaska?
I had no idea Technobuffalo reviewed camera's! In all honesty I did a google search for the camera because it's on sale now for 500 at woot.com and saw TB's review in the search. Really nice review man!
Wow.. I didn't know that the Nikon J1 has a 1 inch type sensor... Interesting...
Without question the best reviewer on Technobuffalo, due to the fact he is clearly very familiar with the device he reviews and obviously knows a whole heap about photography/cameras.
I like this guys. He's no John Q or Noah. But there's something about the toolshed locale that I like.
I would like this review if I knew a thing about cameras but I'll give it a thumbs up anyways
I didn't understand a thing, but way to go man!
For 750 you could get an EOS t3i. Sure that's a full size dslr, but you at least feel comfortable spending that much.
where did this guy go ?
can u please tell me what was that creature crawling on the carpet floor? i have never seen such thing, omg i think i would freak out if i found such an animal in my house!!
I got this for 250, but its old.
Id say its still a great deal.
If i were to get a camera for any reason i would defiantly get this, small, thin with interchangeable lens but $750? That's way to expensive!
great review suuuper indepth. keep it up!
wait , isnt this the guy from infosync world ?
this is a total hippster camera but I like it.
No... As engadget stated, the Sony NEX-C3 is the best micro 4/3
badass review sir.
this guy knows what he's talking about!
That said he should go back to his own channel so he can do more reviews.
Great review!
What a pretty dog!
Good review!
Great review
@rafidiisme its not about whining. The purpose of the people who watch these videos are getting information about products and photography. I was just recommending DigitalRevCom channel for better and wider reviews and for more fun videos.

Guys the price dropped for this camera back in march to about $500. Great deal now with the price drop.
Now you can buy pentax Q on amazon for $383
@chriswordz Did you ever see Tool Time TV show?
@Madjoe1176 really? now what did that accomplish?
this camera looks cute
I don't care about cameras, I watch these because of him. No I'm not gay.
DigitalRevCom for awesome camera reviews . Taught me lots of photography skills and the difference between dslrs and interchangeable lens cameras . :D
@giantiger12 Please go check your facts. It's a 1-inch type sensor.
white - it's wayy cuter
He pointed to the camera.
looks suspiciously like jon lajoie
And again he is in random place reviewing Camera! :D
But the silver lenses look better with the white body.
@abukarali4 that's a hermit crab.

I saw this guy on a different channel and i like the review he did... Jon4lakers ftw, they got the best cell phone reviewer (noah) and this dude that makes the best camera reviews :D
A discription does not need to be that big

@2:02 What the hell is that LOL
Hermit crab
Hate these small interchangeable cameras, they will only take off if they're cheap.
