10 years later and I still watch this video once in a while! What a trip for me, this was my first camera back in the day. Love this review and camera!
Thank you for making this video. I watched this 12 years ago and it made me laugh and smile and go out and buy a Q7 then a spare as I knew they stopped making them. Your enthusiasm and unique sense of humor brightened my day and little did I know that I would call on this video again to lift my spirits and give me a reason to laugh and smile. You see I was involved in a house fire and was in a hospital bed for quite some time hoping that I wouldnt loose my right hand and foot. I watched your video again and said if I am ever able to walk and hold a camera again then I will visit asia (Philippines) with that little camera and another for video and when I got well enough to walk again that is exactly what I did. So I know you will never meet me but I just want to thank you for giving me a little hope in my future and that little camera and your being who you surely made a difference to me.
one of my favorite review videos! Blunty your the only reviewer on here that trys to make it a bit different and inject humour while still giving you the raw info people need!
@MrNDUDE16 Zero. I don't do "cash for comment" and if you think I do, you can just fuck right off. And as a matter of fact, this isn't even a borrowed review unit like I often get, It's mine, I paid for it from my own hard-earned. In fact, I never had any contact with Pentax or the Aussie Pentax distributors AT ALL until weeks after I purchased it when I was well into producing this review, and even then it's only because they noticed me tweeting about the camera.
You are so fun to watch review cameras!! I remember when I first watched this video when it came out, I sure wanted one of these little cameras!! It's about 10 years later and I just ordered one on ebay yesterday and it's on it's way from Japan!! Woohooo! I can't wait to get going with it! I have the Pentax auto 110 which is I think about the same size, I can't wait to see them sitting next to each other. I plan to carry the Q around for a daily cam, get back to some street shooting! :)
I got a Q-S1 and it was fun, I got some vintage Bolex lenses to go with it. Later an Olympus OMD EM10 II was gifted to me and it's amazing... But I find myself wanting to use the Q-S1 more often. The EM10 feels like it's doing all the work, I appreciate the Q making me work for the pictures, it's more satisfying specialy with the vintage C and D mount lenses.
I spent 1 week researching about the camera that would best suit me.. I was confused whether to buy Sony's cybershot or Pentax Optio WG-3 or Pentax Q10... and then I found your video review on Pentax Q. I think you got me convinced to buy this baby! Thanks a lot, Blunty!
This is quite possibly the first camera that I've gone "W.O.W!" After viewing your gallery on Google+, I've now got this twitch that just won't go away, thanks to your review of the Pentax Q. The quality/sharpness/aperture and everything else has quite possibly turned me away from getting a DSLR and going towards this perfect EVIL camera. I'm not a photography fanatic, but this may be my ticket to getting there! As always, awesome reviews Blunty! Keep it up :)
This is a great review - I love the style! I recently bought the Q7 with the 02 lens and the 07 Mount Shield Lens. It's a really fun camera and great for all the reasons you give here. I went with the Q7 because the newest version, the Q-S1, is apparently not as enjoyable to use and the former was on sale here in Tokyo for a song. Anyway, I agree with everything general you say here and really learned some useful specifics. Thanks!!!
Great review! (Finally someone really reviewing "The Camera" and not reviewing the sensor, size, and forgetting what the camera actually can or can not do) Thanks!
Finally, a real review of my all time favorite camera. I'll admit being somewhat shocked by it size originally, but, I've learned to love my Q and even now seem to find little things I didn't know it would do! Enjoyed your review!
@TheEigengrau That's the POINT... if I *had* mentioned how much *I* paid... that information would ALREADY be MISLEADING... as the Q has since dropped in price. (seriously, you're not getting this concept, how?)
Just ordered! I will be taking a photography class, and I have a Minolta x-700 SLR to learn on, but I wanted a DSLR camera to replace an Olympus e-420 I had. However, after researching these compact mirror-less SLR's I went with this Pentax. Can't wait till it arrives!
Thank you Blunty for the wonderful review of the Pentax Q. I fell in love so very much with my first Pentax Q with the Fish-Eye lens that I eventually went and got a second one which has the 05 Telephoto that was sold separately.
I'm not sure if I remember but I'm pretty sure you did gundam reviews back in the day and that's the reason why I'm subbed to you. Still love your reviews!
Thanks for the helpful and entertaining review. I've got huge bloke hands myself. Love my Pentax K20 and recently obtained K3. However, think I'm going to save up the funds and get a used Q in the future. Not as my main camera but this would be a great way to always have a camera ready.
I bought a Q from a pawnshop a couple years ago for $30 because they thought it didn’t work. A new charger and it works great. I love this little camera almost as much as my Nikon D7100. Going to hunt down an inexpensive 02 lens, even though I love the 01 Prime that came with it.
Installed but not had time to properly test and go out shooting with it... but while the focus peaking isn't as nice as what's on the K-30 (or Sony's focus peaking for that matter) - it certainly looks like it'll make MF with my little collection of CCTV C-Mount lenses easier. I've seen reports that noise at high ISO is reduced a bit too.
as usual, enjoyed the review. First time I saw this camera I hated it.but then it grew on me. I loved the old minox cams. Then I played with it and it all made sense. Such an easy camera to just use, no messing about just good photos.. yes expensive but you pay for quality
I recently tried the Nikon V1/J1 and it feels great, but the thought of (as a Pentax K-7 user) a Pentax camera in the same segment is mind-blowing. It looks like they took the K-5, mixed in some of their their tiny retro cameras and added top-notch modern technology. Pentax are great at making pancake lenses, like DA Ltd, so I got high expectation. The one thing I can't understand is why they didn't implement mechanical manual focusing with af-shift, it would have been perfect and doable.
Hi Blunty, can you please tell us what BW parameter setting do you use? Like filter, toning, high/low key, contrast, sharpness etc. I struggle to get good BW pics out of my pentax Q... while I could do that easily with my x100t. I'm wondering if you can give me some tips, or better yet, it'd be great if you make a video to talk about your settings! Thanks!
@JJtheEskimo Yup, I paid the "early adopter tax", don't regret it, have had LOTS of fun with it ever since, but you're right, the recent price drop has made it MUCH more enticing :) Enjoy.
@VGoTD Like I mentioned, it's built with the same materials as high end DSLR's. The body is a one piece cast magnesium alloy frame, which is both very strong and very light... to boil it down... the little bastard is tough. It's also light, so thanks to the nifty bits of newtonian physics, if dropped, it's not going to hit the ground as hard as a larger, heavier camera either.
@metalgrunt400 Hope you have as much fun with yours as I've been having with mine. (pro tip; get the twin lens kit, the zoom is super handy for photo-walks, and take a good hard look at the fish-eye, big fun... the two other "toy" lenses are optional ;) )
@macaroni262 With the Q you'll be fine to ISO 1600, you can go further but of course you'll get more noticeable noise (though it's a fairly 'ok' noise, not too harsh can be tolerable most of the time) some of the shots here in fact would have gone to 1600 (the Q allows you control to set the max ISO it'll move to if you have auto ISO selected, mine stays set at a 1600 cap)... as for Sharpness, no issues (except for the "toy" lenses of course, which are soft by design)
@DuctapeisSilver As you can see in this video, the Q's Video is quite nice, but if your main priority is video then get a camera whose main priority is video. Makes sense right?
Love the video, always admired the Q. It's weird and people might not get it, but it's a genuinely nice camera to shoot with, which is something Pentax are very good at from my experience. Your voice reminds me of the guy off the Buzz video games...
Small sensors are fine with me, but it's the iso performance and sharpness defaults that sometimes come along with them that gets me. I would love to see the iso range and performance from such a camera.
Thank you very much for this review Blunty :) I've been looking for a good, cheap camera for a long time, and you've convinced me to buy this one. Fingers crossed that my parents will buy it for me :D
I've been watching a lot of reviews lately since I want to buy a camera where I can film and make stills. I wanted something to be able to do both. Actually I wanted to buy a super new camera to make vlogs and nice videos for youtube, and to have it as a travel camera. Now I finally know that I want a Pentax Q7, I LOVE the colors, the comparison video with the Pentax and the Lumix GM1 shows sooo much better colors with the Pentax.
Excellent, excellent review. You briefly talked about cameras video capabilities, how well it does up-close video in low light environment, think tabletop review. Also, will it shoot video in macro?
I personally don't mind carrying my bigger DSLRs. I picked up a Q today to have fun with ended up getting it in Like New condition for $85 and a Canon EF to Q mount for 22. I may pick up a couple of Q lenses depending on the price I find, but I want to see how fun this is with my Ziess 21 f/2.8 as well as some of my longer EF lenses like the 85(~475) f/1.2 70-200(~365-1120) f/2.8
Friggin LOVE this camera! The Prime 01 and Fish Eye 03 are so cool not to mention quite capable! Can't wait for the telephoto 06 when it becomes available. Has really sparked my creativity and has put my need to shoot into overdrive! Might even pick up the official K mount adapter in the near future.
I've been looking to move up from a compact camera to something which gives me a little bit more control. Frankly DSLRs are a little intimidating and a little bit over the top for the kind of use I have for a camera, but this looks like a happy medium between taking occasional snapshots and the dedicated enthusiast.
@MrCazman123 I tested it, had zero issues... but truth be told, Exceptfor the occasional need to use it as a fill light, I almost never use on camera flash... or even off-camera strobes really. I like working with available light mostly. Have been meaning to give some strobe techniques a try though.
@ieunatelove That's a call you're gonna have to make yourself. I highly suggest going into a good camera store and spending a few minutes with each one to see how you like the feel, function and general interface of each. Both are very capable cameras, but take very different approaches.
Sounds great now you talk about it in greater depth, just a few questions though. Does the lack of shallow depth of field annoy you? And is it a significant lack of depth of field? Also is the ND filter something that automatically goes over the sensor or is it basically a really low ISO? And finally is there an EVF available? Thanks, great video.
@tastytassie the first promotional image I saw of it was hanging on a KEY-CHAIN, heh. it's what first fascinated me about it and made me look into buying one. SO glad I got one (obviously) :)
@blankpaper66 It's Cameras like this one that can turn a casual interest in photography to a full on passion (and also won't do long term damage to your hearing, or shake your damn side-mirrors off ;) )
@VagueFatality1 It's a very clever bit of design... and deceptively strong. Gets the flash up and out of the way of the lens too, very clever design work.
Thanks for this great review (and the one for the 06 lens). It pushed me to take the plunge and I am really impressed by what this little guy can do! Though I no longer have it to do a real comparison,I think it's safe to say the image quality is comparable to the Sony A65.
Hahah!! Your video is quite fun and clear!! Actually i want to buy a new camera, but havent decided which to buy yet!! I really like Q!! And after watching your video, i really believe that its really easy to carry on and have the good quality if the photos!! I decide to get it!! Thank you!! This video really helps me a lot!!^^
@Blunty3000 For most people. We only buy a new camera when the old one breaks. Can you assemble a nicely priced set cameras that will last and NOT be out dated in 6 months. Kind of budget and quality minded but centered for longevity and quality mostly.
Whats it like in low light indoor situations? That's my biggest problem at the moment, and what i will be looking for in my next camera. Nice review. Cheers
Hi, Just ordered my Q. Have you made any videos of the different types of lenses that can be attached to the Pentax Q using adapters? I know the Pentax Q has been out on the market, but all the research have done on this camera tell me to go ahead and buy it. Thanks for the review man.
Hi Blunty, greetings from Argentina. What are the reasons that the Pentax Q is not recommended for wedding photography? I mean, the image quality is not bad, it's has a hot shoe, a decent AF and two zoom lenses f2.8 like the 02 lens and the new 06 lens.
would be a great little camera if it had the viewfinder, i just have to have an eye piece to look through. This is where the Nikon V1 or the E-M5 shines.
Interesting to see what Blunty thinks of the new Q10 iteration of the Q series that Pentax announced a couple of months ago. Hopefully this new Q will address the minor faults of the original Q, & that there won't be nearly the ordeal in securing this new model as there was the original Q This new Q10's virtually the same size as the original, and now apparently Pentax's making for it an "optional Adapter Q for K Lens" for it that will allow fitting the larger Pentax K-series lenses on the Q10.
Sony sensor :) good thing - well I think I will still prefer my Sony RX100 with greater focal length. Pentax makes good stuff and believe Q well made - but now limited focal lengths - also very slow on start up. LCD not as nice as RX100. Yes focus speed average not fast. So a cute camera but RX100 more practical and no lens cap :) I do think also that the IQ of the Fuji X20 is a bit better then the Q. They need longer focal length lenses now. always fun to watch you
I think I'd like to have a camera like this. I'm tired of my old Nikon D50 with no video mode, no tilt/articulating screen, no image stabilization (unless I buy an expensive lens), and a tiny lcd screen that only shows pics taken, an ocular viewfinder that is annoying because I wear eyeglasses, plus it's a big DSLR and a pain to carry - But, it takes beautiful pics! (for me, mostly in auto modes). Sadly, the Sigma macro/general purpose lens I bought with it just broke and can't be fixed. If this Pentax Q had a mic jack and I could tether it to my laptop (to record video so I am able to monitor what the camera is recording while the camera is positioned over my shoulder (for making sewing and art teaching videos), I think I would have finally found the perfect camera. Since this was uploaded in 2011, maybe it's been upgraded to do the things I want? Maybe the hot shoe can have accessories attached so the camera can do some of the things I want? Camera shopping is so time consuming. Local camera shops don't have the selection or even knowledgeable people to recommend a camera and accessories for my needs. I can't imagine what it would be like without so many good reviews on RUclips. Thanks for all your work in making these videos, Blunty!
Price has come down to $200 brand new from shop.. just picked up one my self to fit my old Pentax A110 lenses. Waiting for the adaptor to try the old 110 lenses.. thanks for your review. BUD
I totally agree. I have 5 canons from crop to full frame including the G15... I LOVE MY PENTAX Q... It's so flexible and so cute!
I'm taking my Q to Europe with a couple of lenses and I got warm and fuzzy memories of your videos. Classic Blunty!
It's 2019 and I purchased this!!!!!!!!
recently found one, I'm looking forward to buy it before someone else's bought it
one of my favorite review videos! Blunty your the only reviewer on here that trys to make it a bit different and inject humour while still giving you the raw info people need!
@MrNDUDE16 Zero. I don't do "cash for comment" and if you think I do, you can just fuck right off.

Best fun I have had as a Photographer. Amazing little camera that punches above its weight.
I spent 1 week researching about the camera that would best suit me.. I was confused whether to buy Sony's cybershot or Pentax Optio WG-3 or Pentax Q10... and then I found your video review on Pentax Q. I think you got me convinced to buy this baby! Thanks a lot, Blunty!
i'll be honest im not much of a photographer but i watch these vids for your awesome stills and vids. They are amazing
This is quite possibly the first camera that I've gone "W.O.W!"
After viewing your gallery on Google+, I've now got this twitch that just won't go away, thanks to your review of the Pentax Q.
The quality/sharpness/aperture and everything else has quite possibly turned me away from getting a DSLR and going towards this perfect EVIL camera.
I'm not a photography fanatic, but this may be my ticket to getting there!
As always, awesome reviews Blunty! Keep it up :)
I love the way you put your reviews, you're my best channel reference bro, thnxs for the effort you put
Thanks to your wonderful review, I've decided to buy my first camera which is a Pentax Q that I'm getting for a little under $200! Thanks so much!
(Finally someone really reviewing "The Camera" and not reviewing the sensor, size, and forgetting what the camera actually can or can not do)
Thanks!
Finally, a real review of my all time favorite camera. I'll admit being somewhat shocked by it size originally, but, I've learned to love my Q and even now seem to find little things I didn't know it would do! Enjoyed your review!
Thank you Blunty! You have helped make my decision on which dslr I will finally get. A decision I could not make for a few months now!
it's a mirrorless camera.. It's different from DSLR.. :)
I have all 3 Q's. A purple Evangelion Q10, a light purple and pink Q7 and a white and yellow Q S1. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these cameras!!!!!!
@TheEigengrau That's the POINT... if I *had* mentioned how much *I* paid... that information would ALREADY be MISLEADING... as the Q has since dropped in price. (seriously, you're not getting this concept, how?)

Woo! Cameo! You've sold me, this is now on my Christmas list. As always quality review sir :)
@hezzart Most shots exhibiting a shallow DoF were indeed the "standard Prime 01" (the 47mm equiv F/1.9) ... but there are a couple from the Zoom too.
A very helpful review, Blunty. You convinced me to buy this camera. You were right: the Q is a little beast quite out of the ordinary.
Finally someone who shares my Q thoughts! Your amazballs!
Absolutely love your camera reviews Blunty!
I just got myself one for my birthday and photography course and I love it
You're descriptions are incredible. Do the world a favor and right a fantasy book. Haha. Great review as always Blunty
Thanks for the helpful and entertaining review. I've got huge bloke hands myself. Love my Pentax K20 and recently obtained K3. However, think I'm going to save up the funds and get a used Q in the future. Not as my main camera but this would be a great way to always have a camera ready.

I've seen reports that noise at high ISO is reduced a bit too.
im looking at digitals and the pentax lineup seems to hold true to the pentax history of great cameras at a price that wont hurt too bad.
as usual, enjoyed the review. First time I saw this camera I hated it.but then it grew on me. I loved the old minox cams. Then I played with it and it all made sense. Such an easy camera to just use, no messing about just good photos.. yes expensive but you pay for quality

since the price slash is the only thing I was waiting for, just ordered my first camera, the pentax q :) cheers blunty mate.
@JJtheEskimo Yup, I paid the "early adopter tax", don't regret it, have had LOTS of fun with it ever since, but you're right, the recent price drop has made it MUCH more enticing :) Enjoy.

Hey thanks a bunch blunty, i was on the fence about this, but this review helped me decide that i'd get it.

Brilliant review... That's a whole lotta power in a little camera ^.^
DUDE! that pop up flash is the coolest shit i have seen in a long time
Great review. Informative and entertaining. I just ordered a Q10 on eBay.
Love the video, always admired the Q. It's weird and people might not get it, but it's a genuinely nice camera to shoot with, which is something Pentax are very good at from my experience.
Your voice reminds me of the guy off the Buzz video games...
Stop making such lovely images of Sydney. You're killing me! :)
Small sensors are fine with me, but it's the iso performance and sharpness defaults that sometimes come along with them that gets me. I would love to see the iso range and performance from such a camera.
Thank you very much for this review Blunty :)
I've been looking for a good, cheap camera for a long time, and you've convinced me to buy this one.

I just bought one two days ago with 2x zoom lens, I'm looking forward
Excellent, excellent review.
You briefly talked about cameras video capabilities, how well it does up-close video in low light environment, think tabletop review. Also, will it shoot video in macro?
8:29 one of my favorite shots of yours, very well done.
Thank you for the response. Please keep up the good work on your videos and objective reviews.
Woo woo wooo! I love watching your videos! It's where I get most of my info on technology from!! Wooo!
I personally don't mind carrying my bigger DSLRs. I picked up a Q today to have fun with ended up getting it in Like New condition for $85 and a Canon EF to Q mount for 22.
I paid £130 from my local Asda and tbh its the best £130 I've spent only had it 4 days so still got to try out all its features. Great review btw :)
@TangyTangoJuice I forget the alpha-numerical model number, but they're not Koss, they're Sennheiser's
I've been looking to move up from a compact camera to something which gives me a little bit more control. Frankly DSLRs are a little intimidating and a little bit over the top for the kind of use I have for a camera, but this looks like a happy medium between taking occasional snapshots and the dedicated enthusiast.
That spring loaded flash arm is very interesting indeed

@tastytassie the first promotional image I saw of it was hanging on a KEY-CHAIN, heh. it's what first fascinated me about it and made me look into buying one. SO glad I got one (obviously) :)
I'm actually looking to buy this camera in 2020.
Thanks for the review. Great stuff! Do you still shoot with and enjoy using your little Q after all these years?
Still use it, still love it.
@blankpaper66 It's Cameras like this one that can turn a casual interest in photography to a full on passion (and also won't do long term damage to your hearing, or shake your damn side-mirrors off ;) )
AWESOME REVIEW!!!!!! THX A LOT! enjoy it from the very beginning to very end!)
Haha I love how
Your not afraid to speak your mind blunty! Unlike most youtubers! I'm a new sub. And I'm defiantly staying!
@Rockification09 Google says yes, it has launched in the Philippines.
Impressive lil Bugger (as you would say.)
I wonder if you could apply a trimmed matte phone screen protector to the screen.
@Blunty3000 For most people. We only buy a new camera when the old one breaks. Can you assemble a nicely priced set cameras that will last and NOT be out dated in 6 months. Kind of budget and quality minded but centered for longevity and quality mostly.
If I wanted to do studio filming and documenting, and a bit of photography, which camera would be more preferable for me, the V1 or the Pentax Q?
Great review, nice photos. Thanks
Whats it like in low light indoor situations? That's my biggest problem at the moment, and what i will be looking for in my next camera. Nice review. Cheers
On a side note to most of your camera reviews - Melbourne is a beautiful place to live.
@MsHumaEnglish I'll be looking at the GXR and some fresh mounts soon-ish.
Hi, Just ordered my Q. Have you made any videos of the different types of lenses that can be attached to the Pentax Q using adapters? I know the Pentax Q has been out on the market, but all the research have done on this camera tell me to go ahead and buy it. Thanks for the review man.
Um, would you recommend getting this camera for taking videos as well? I'm just curious...or should i get a proper video camera?
Great review ! I am looking around for a tiny camera to shoot balc and white street phot... Maybe this one is a winner...
Great job on the review... I want to replace my trusted but not so small Oly c8080 as my carry around. I'll be looking at this closely.
This is where the Nikon V1 or the E-M5 shines.
because its mirrorless, I think.. that's why it doesn't have a viewfinder. :)
BUD
