i have the Q7 with the larger sensor and an EM5 and have shot with both many many times ... and id have to say the EM5 does not blow the Q7 away with I.Q. performance at all ... the majority of the prints i have made with the Q7 my photographer buddies thought i did on the EM5 .... I.Q. is not as cut and dry as "bigger sensor wins" .... thats a fallacy started by noobs that also think the more MP the better the picture .... you have to consider lens performance, pixel density, the circle of confusion, post processing camera file processing etc. .... whats funny is most of the people putting down the smaller sensor cams have never taken a decent picture to save their life.... this should be a warning sign about what they know.... go look at Bluntys Q10-7 pics if you want to see what this camera can really do .... not just a bunch of amatuerish looking beach snaps ....
Darren Davenport I've been wanting to buy this ever since I first heard of it. Bought a Q10 from Amazon but it had no charger so I had to return it, but even turned off, I was amazed. People keep saying the Q10 is plastic but it felt as solid as any metal device. Just.... Wow. Sadly that was the only piece the seller had in my country. Just waiting for more to pop up somewhere.
I have a Q10 and a QS1, as well as all of the autofocus lenses made for the system. I love mine to absolute death. I even mourn the loss of image stabilization with my new Fuji XT20 (the only thing that keeps it from being the perfect camera).
It's really impressive to see now what Sony is capable of delivering with its RX10 lineup. Sensor tech has come a long way, now you can get 1" sensor in a a body the same size as a pentax Q
I bought the Q as I thought it would be a fun camera and that would be it and to add to my other Pentax collection of cameras. However as I started to use it for portraits of people I met in my travels around Oz. I found it to be a very capable little camera. And to be honest I am now using it more and more. However you only get from this camera great images the more you use it and understand how to use it. Shooting in Raw makes allows for heaps of information to work with in Photoshop. I often shoot 1-2 stops under exposed. Awesome little camera that is so much fun to use.
I have the 06 tele lens on my Q7 all the time, making it a 70-200 2.8 at a palm size. Incredible! The image quality is more than enough for instagram. Although it has a small body, I never found any button/dial hard to operate. Pentax definitely put a lot of works on this series.
I saw this very nice video 2 years after the release. I was looking for a fun little camera back in the days. I decided to buy something totally different. Still I really love this camera. I heard that Ricoh said that the project q is not dead. And I really think so. I wonder why with nowadays improvements in photo elaboration and tiny sensor quality (with smartphone mostly), you cannot have a new and more capable version of the q. Lens dimensioni were awesome. The ability to use d mount and c mount... The only thing I would love on this camera and the reason I didn't buyed it was the lack of an evf.
I've had my Q since 2013 and it's a great little thing, got the pin-hole and fish-eye lenses for it and they're really quite fun little things, though lack the nice build quality.
thanks for the effort and the sharing. i just picked up a pentax q along with lenses 1-2-6. i am literally going to go out and do my first walkabout with the q. care to share settings? i wish i could pin the nd function to the front 1-4 dial. thoughts on max useable iso? thumbs up.
I have the original Q. I bought it less than two months ago for just under 200 with the 02 kit lens. The 02 lens isn't good, but the 06 and 01 are. i'm considering buying the 08 lens. Does anyone have any experience with the 08 lens? I balk at getting the 08 because buildings on the side of the frame appear to lean toward the center sometimes dramatically. I don't really like that look, but other images I've seen with the 08 are really sharp, so maybe good use for street shooting, or contrast B&W images.
I've got the 08, it is a great lens, but any ultrawide is not for the fainthearted. You have to be aware of converging verticals, it is the price you pay for that wide view. The Qs do have a level display that helps though.
The Q-S1 has better specs, including a larger (1/1.7" vs 1/2.3" sensor). The build quality isn't as nice, and it is physically larger, too. I still prefer the original Q ;)
I was surprised with how muffled the G85 mics sound. The LX100 internal mics seem to have clearer sound, which is good since it doesn't have a mic jack!
No, but you won't have to worry about overheating or atrocious rolling shutter. There really is no perfect camera. The A6500 spanks m4/3 for IQ but has it's share of downsides as well!
Wow. That's a little surprising considering how long you were able to pick one up for ~$100 body-only. I'm hanging on to mine as a curiosity more than anything. I have the 01 Prime and 03 Fisheye lens for it, as well as a 25mm f/1.7 C-mount adapted lens.
I like.q series cameras, I like.the idea. But I don think like too much the lenses, there.is.only a.lens under f2 and this is.a big trouble.for.this system considering that for example.cameras with fixed lens like lumix. Lx7 lx15 lx100 has a faster lens..
There are dozens of lenses faster than f2 available for this camera. There are fisheyes, ultrawides, and long telephotos, none of which will fit a Lumix.
I generally enjoy watching your videos but something I find really annoying is just how loud your backing music 'kicks in' when you show stills and video clips. Having to adjust the volume each time is irritating and unnecessary. As and educator, I am mindful that people often watch YT videos because they want to learn something about a subject and are not necessarily looking for entertainment. Otherwise, you have a very pleasant and sincere style of delivery - you don't need 'dance' music transitions to showcase your work.
That title needs changing - No current Pentax cameras shoot 4K DCI or 4K UHD. Yes, they do a 4K Timelapse, but they do not shoot video at 4K, HD is the highest any go.
Then a better title description is definitely needed, as it currently implies the camera is 4K capable. Sure, that's what we want, but no chance of it yet ;)
Watching this at 2020. Mine is first generation Pentax Q in white.

The music is phenomenal
Great review, thank you!

I CAME HERE FOR THE TINY TRIPOD! WHERE I CAN BUY IT?
i have the white version bought used without any lens. Which lens choice would you recommend for street photography?
Zatoichiable The 8.5mm f/1.9 prime is a great choice. Small, light and fast.
01 Standard Prime 8.5mm - the best of them all. I found one in Japan (150EUR lightly used incl. postage).
what do you think about the Pentax Q-S1? is ti similar specs?
The Q-S1 has better specs, including a larger (1/1.7" vs 1/2.3" sensor). The build quality isn't as nice, and it is physically larger, too. I still prefer the original Q ;)

I use LR 2015.9 Camera Raw 9.9 and I have no issues with the output.
Great video! I kinda want one :D cute cat too!
nice review and i like your cat it's ok if the cat meow at the background so cute voice of that cat
the price of the camera skyrocketed in ebay.

Paul Bailey Sorry. I usually try to normalize the volume levels but sometimes I forget. Thanks for watching!

PiDsMedia - The Pentax Cinematographer The video itself is 4K.

Why so mean to your cat. It is just sweat the kitty!
