Love my Qs-1! Bough it in Okinawa, with the standard zoom. Later got the prime and the telephoto. Nothing best for traveling, and more. Also got a polarizer and THIS IS A GREAT CAMERA !!
Looking to buy this in November 2020. Still seems like an exciting little camera. it’s dirt cheap. Look a young Chris Nichols looks like he’s 12yrs old lol!
For someone who wants something better than a point and shoot, but not as bulky as the next steps up in quality, the Q fits that category pretty well. I know several enthusiast photographers who have the Q as a secondary camera they carry around, because the image quality is fairly good for such a small camera. Yes, sensor size plays a huge role in image quality, but it isn't everything. The f/1.9 lens that comes stock is just fantastic, and lets in a lot of light.
I think Pentax have done an excellent job with this toy camera - it reminds me of the Auto 110 which was real fun to use and could turn out good slides back in the day. Well done to Pentax for being brave and not as lazy as Canon & Nikon!
Chris, post an update to this review by reviewing the Q-S1 as it has a newer larger sensor as well as AF during video- we would all love to see what you think of it.
Dunno about the lag, only DigiRev seem to have that kind of big problem. Maybe they got a pre-production one? All I can say is that I wouldn't trade my Q for a compact as it is so much more fun to use. Instead of feeling limiting it actually feels like a fun mini-DSLR.
@flordesnor Canadians can buy it from us: (check our website ) For other countries we recommend checking with Pentax or your local retailer.. or for shipping from Hong Kong try - digital rev
You've asked my question as well about the newest iteration of the Q series. Pentax's dedicated, for the time being at least, to this series if nothing else. As ridiculous as their initial asking price was @ $800 (USD), getting the original interchangeable lens camera brand new today w/ both the size & IQ of the Canon S110 for less than $250(USD) is quite a deal. Word is that an adapter will be offered @ additional charge that will let you hang Pentax's K-mount lenses on the front of the Q10.
New firmware highly improves autofocus speed. Startap speed never seemed too slow to me so I haven't noticed that it"s faster now. Some say that it is indeed faster so it must be true.
Will you be testing the Q10? From what I see, it has a lot better ISO performance. Some video samples with tripod would be nice also, just to see the quality properly :)
Pentax Q is the digital resurrection of the smallest SLR Pentax auto 110 of late 70's and early 80's. Both the Pentax auto 110 and Pentax Q mount were technologically impressive but were never successful. The following years after the first micro 4/3 mount mirrorless cameras of Olympus/Panasonic in 2008 all cameras manufacturers joined the mirrorless revolution. The Sony e-mount and the Samsung NX mount with the first APS-C mirrorless cameras in 2010. The mirrorless Pentax Q and Nikon 1 mount with their small sensors in 2011. The mirrorless APS-C Canon EF-M mount and Fujifilm X mount cameras in 2012. The game changer full frame Sony e-mount cameras of 2013. The last effort of Samsung with the NX-mini mount camera with smaller sensor in 2014. From these cameras four mounts didn't survive. The Pentax Q mount, Nikon 1 mount Samsung NX and NX mini mounts were never popular neither the Canon EF-M mount but still survives like the micro 4/3 mount. Only the Sony e-mount and Fujifilm X mount are really successful. The mirrorless medium format cameras and the Leica L mount cameras are oriented to a specific rich group of amateur photographers or professionals. For the recent full frame mirrorless Canon RF mount , Nikon Z mount and Panasonic/Sigma L mount is early for conclusions.
OMG this thing looks like my dad's old DSR camera. maybe I should get this one for him on his Bday. I wonder how this thing would perform on Astrophotography. How is the noise level on dark areas? I'm thinking about buying some dslr camera for astrophotography, but I have absolutely no idea which one to buy.
now with Panasonic GM1 the Q7 has a real competitor - GM1 with a much larger sensor - but Panasonic only have the kit in that very small form factor - now the 20mm F1.7 is very small so ideal for the GM1 - So if Panasonic produce small form factor lenses then the GM1 is the one to get - but Pentax now has more lens selection in that small form factor but smaller sensor
well, not bad..good idea..but really why not got a 1/1.7 sensor??? I do not want see the IQ of an interchangble lens camera is worse than s95 or lx5...
x100 all day, I don't understand this camera. the lens are not that great, what's the point of changing lens when the intercahngable lens is just as bad as a normal point and shot lens. what can you get from this that a canon s95 or s100 can't give you?
@leepaothao Totally agree. Seems utterly useless. Just a concept of a tiny camera having interchangeable lenses makes me cringe. And $800 dollars? You gotta be kidding me. For that price you can get s95 AND another very small pocket camera to go with it. This is just ridiculous. Also some other reviews (*cough* digital rev *cough*) show huge lag on the LCD screen.
This kid is going somewhere. I can feel it.
Hahaha blast to the past ;)
I am watching this in 2019 and pleasantly amused.
Qi Xiao a regular who comes into my job said he’s going to lend it to me with a chance to buy, so after watching this I’m fairly excited
I have been searching for years, finally found one in good condition.
2020:)
2021
2022
Look at how young Chris looked like 10 years ago😮😮😮😮
Still want one of these... Holy smokes Chris looks like a little kid here haha!
Man... You were Young!

Hell yeah! He looks like 12 here! I am here browsing on ebay where to get this toy camera.

2021 and I still have my Q and use it on the regular.

Wow this is only 5 years ago but you look at least 10 years younger!
ouch
O my god,you are so young in this video Chris, have you turned 19 years yet?
Chris, post an update to this review by reviewing the Q-S1 as it has a newer larger sensor as well as AF during video- we would all love to see what you think of it.
In these old Camera Store videos, Chris looks like a slightly shady, street seller.
@TheNatureguy01 It has stereo sound. No mic input though.
Jordan @ The Camera Store
@jimmycrackedcorn226 We are expecting them to arrive very soon and price should be $785.

@Silver41 I'd agree, although even the M4/3 sensor is small; the body size reduction doesn't justify the sensor size.
I'm sure there will be more lenses in the future: 6, 7, 8, ....nope, only ever made it to 8.
@flordesnor Canadians can buy it from us: (check our website ) For other countries we recommend checking with Pentax or your local retailer.. or for shipping from Hong Kong try - digital rev
Is that a 5-15mm zoom lens in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

Wow! Throw back.

LOL @ the people coming towards the bridge, seeing you guys, and swerving around.
OMG, you are so young when 10 years ago.
I wanna thank a moment to thank Jesus for RUclips recommendations in 2020
Is this the same guy from Peta Pixel? :D
No. He's from DigitalRev
jk
@MyStormVideos EPL-2 will give you better image quality, but the Pentax is smaller.
Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
Excellent Video! Well Done!
It has been done with an adapter. The DA*300 actually fits it nicely image-wise.
2:30 the couple - uuum lets go the other way D:
In 2020, Chris Nicholls brought his son to work.
Chris and Jordan, how's the startup time. I've read on the internet that the startup time is woefully slow. Does new firmware improve it?
It’s too bad an updated QS-1 video wasn’t released. It’s interesting to watch in 2019.
Looks really good, however the size of the sensor does scare me... Smaller lens = less glass so they should be cheaper???
How smart is the AWB? Quite a difference between the Panasonic.
Still using mine today, such a shame that Pentax dropped the Q system.
I would of like to of seen what could be done with it today after all this time
So young
Will you be testing the Q10? From what I see, it has a lot better ISO performance. Some video samples with tripod would be nice also, just to see the quality properly :)
I think video quality is even better than my EP-L3 :D
Nikon csc is also at this price range, gonna be tough competition out there
Old 35mm manual lenses like my old 50mm prime won't work on there will they?

Great review. Where can I buy this beauty?
Is this not the same sensor size as the Fuji X20? So which camera gives better IQ ?
do you think if pentax ever released a successor it wouldve been called the Pentax Qt?
Ok I laughed my butt off over this. Good job!
how many amp-hours is the battery? How long does the battery life? Thanks.
btw,is that camera a point and shoot or manual focusing ?
both
@aluxious Current price for the Q and all five lenses is $1,370.48 (Canadian $)
I'm a Pentax user already, 135 format and APS-C DSLR. I want the Q.
Great review Chris///
@ethancfbz I'm of course referring to the Q, not the GF-1.
One question this camera, takes better photos than the iphone 7 plus?
betuel pimentel YES Same Sensor Made By Sony
I just watched new 16-35 F4 PZ episode, then I saw this... Hello, young Sky Walker
Love.
Hey, thanks for being so objective. Makes me want to go out and blow the first Pentax rep I meet.
help me pick Pentax Q or Olympus EPL-2 thanks
"I'm sure there's gonna be more lenses (6, 7, 8, 9) in the future" he said... Yeah, right!
06, 07, 08 came out, and there are macro workarounds, to compensate for the fact that the 09 never made production.
Tony Stark knows his stuff.

Wow Chris is so young in this video.
what about low light bro?
thanks for getting bk to me
No problem
i need to go take a no. 2
Neat little toy... Hey Chris what happens again when you have to take a #4??..HAHAHA
this is an interesting VDO.
Me Wanteee!! How much?!
By naming the lenses toy Pentax depreciated the value of its camera.
More PENTAX
Chris you look so young and cute
You were toooooo young then!!!!!!!!!!!
lol imagine if this was a k-mount and putting a bigma on the end!
it has 1/7 sensor
no the first model is a 1/2.3''
Yikes. I don't think its worth such a price. Looks fun.
1/2.3 sensor, that's the same sensor size as the Nexus 5X and 6P...SMARTPHONES
+Sepehr Naserkhaki You dont say? This is not a new video. This camera was produced almost 5 years ago. And camera is more then just the sensor.
That's remarkably large for a smartphone.
well, not bad..good idea..but really why not got a 1/1.7 sensor??? I do not want see the IQ of an interchangble lens camera is worse than s95 or lx5...
Take a number 4. 😂😂😂
x100 all day, I don't understand this camera. the lens are not that great, what's the point of changing lens when the intercahngable lens is just as bad as a normal point and shot lens. what can you get from this that a canon s95 or s100 can't give you?
Everyone is complaining abou the price. The cam is going to be msrp for maybe 2 weeks lol.
@leepaothao

the image stabilization looks terrible.
this felt so weird
I dont mind having a big camera, I'll stay with my D90 rather than any of the EVIL cameras.
How do you feel today? Move to an EVIL Canon or Sony? Just curious.
fuji x20
OMG! Look how young Chris dressed like an old man
cute guy
Fantastic system, sensor size fail and price too high for this sensor.
Dont be jealous but im getting one for free =D
very very "pro pentax" hand on with a very bad image comparison!
I'd take a GF-1 over this any day.
