I agree. He had a good point he was trying to get too but sadly he wasn’t able to express himself adequately which is disappointing because 1) he’s a young congressman and 2) he’s a KENNEDY!! 🤦🏻‍♀️ *smh*
Just overall with these headings it seems to me that no one really prepared for what they were going to ask. Like properly prepare - with so many Gen Yers, millennials and even some Gen X-ers available to tap as resources to research, better understand and provide insight on the practical use of the platform it seems to me the US Congress & Senate woefully failed in their duties to get the issue right and get Facebook to really implement change. In most instances you could see Mark Zuckerberg trying not to LOL at the ridiculous questions they were asking.
      It’s a shame.

People also need to understand that not everybody knows how a server works, how data is stored on the internet, how is shared, or what metadata is for that matter so it’s great that they are finally talking about it so people can get educated on it.

if you put your data public, then it is public even for advertisers. I think they haven’t thought long and hard enough with their questions and wasted so much time. i think facebook can find a way to educate facebook users constantly about the things they put in public because these users sometimes forget they put their information in public and gets very upset when suddenly they see ads relevant to their searches. Ads most of the time is annoying for social media users. I guess there should be an option on user’s profile to turn on or turn off ads

    • @C4DNerd
      @C4DNerd 6 лет назад +10

+Book Videos: An option to turn on and off ads is the dumbest idea ever.
First off, if the option was there to turn off ads, NOBODY would have ads on. That's just how it is.
Second, how will Facebook make their money? They won't be able to sustain themselves as a business and they will shutdown. The only way you can make Facebook run without ads is if you make it a paid service, and I guarantee you that everyone would take ads that are targeted to you based on things you "like" on your public Facebook page over a monthly bill.

Just in case anyone is wondering.. as someone who has advertised on Facebook I can confirm we have no idea what individuals we are specifically teaching until they click an ad and make a purchase. We only know that because obviously their name and information comes into our e-commerce website platform so we can fill their order. When building an ad, you choose which location, age range, interests, and behaviors you want to target. Typically millions of people are reached over time. We don’t know who we are targeting until they buy from us. Not sure why people are so weird about interest targeted ads.

at 3:40 Joe Kennedy nails it. Congress needs to write a law that strongly puts Users Data firmly in control of that user, thus strengthens and supporting the act of right to privacy for that user. Third parties must explicitly on an individual basis court the user for the data, and not attempt a consequential approach to the users data, which is coercive.

Pretty sure these guys are referring to "cookies", which 99% of websites, including google, youtube, and amazon use to track your browsing history to determine what kind of ads they should post to you. Its not them selling your info, its simply advertising. If they see that you were looking for skis, they're gonna start posting ads for skis around to get you to buy some...

  • @adtc

How do they not get "the advertisers don't know who their ads are shown to"? That's exactly how television advertising works! You get an ad served because you tune to a TV channel you like, and the advertiser is targeting people who like that channel. But it doesn't mean the advertiser knows your identity. This whole debate is stupid.

He doesn't seem to get it. The advertisers say "hey facebook, show these ads to these types of people". Facebook says "ok!".
The advertiser has no access to data.
It does not see any of this process.
They have no idea who their ads were shown to.
I don't know why this is difficult to understand.

    • @nothing-wp9ti

the sites you visit store facebook cookies on your browser essentially so facebook can see some of your internet history. But this is only for websites who choose to be a part of facebook's program. Websites will opt into this program because they make more money.

The problem is super obvious watching this. The people in charge asking the questions are so clueless about how any of these systems work that they cannot frame an intelligent question no matter how hard they try. They are trying to regulate something they are unable to grasp the fundamentals of.

    1. Deleted data are not valid for advertisers as it doesn’t have to apply anymore.
    2. Advertisers DON’T have access to any user data besides their own. Facebook has the access and facebook targets the group advertisers ask for. That is how majority of modern marketing companies works.
    3. Are these senators playing stupid or do they really have some issues with basic understanding?
