You've probably heard this one but I'll give it a go anyway. Back in my trucking days there was a Joke going around about Ohio. " You hear what they are doing with all the dot officers in ohio? They are laying a bunch off and putting the rest of them at every mile marker "
If the sign says “all truck stop at scales” and I get a green light I’m hammering down.
Hammer down on your PRIME truck? Good luck! Lol
That's what I thought she Said diffent
@@mr.sandman7deuce prime truck? Guess you can’t see my profile pic.
@@truckinglifewithshawn ya the point of having a PrePass is to bypass when scales are open. She probably just miss spoke.
You won't get to far before getting pulled over. Thats a guarantee 💯 %
Stay safe and out of trouble fellas...

I wish all DOT employees were as kind as that lady! The trucking world would be a lot different for sure!
She's not kind. She said, "Hopefully this year." She can't wait till she can beng us over over a tire presdure.
Yeah and unfortunately they’re not and you also have super truckers that don’t help situations either.
If you drive a multi colored Volvo and have your company name and DOT # written on cardboard and taped to the door they will get you 😂
Suspiciously specific
White Volvo with red hood and two different headlight mafia 😂
Hahahahah very true
And a Volvo logo on the visor 😅

When I was driving OTR...Years ago, I asked a DOT officer how they picked trucks? He smiled and said "Dream Catchers" and a cluttered dash...Dirty cab, dirty operation.
And on the flip side... In Colorado I had one tell me to go ahead park and bring my paper work in after I scaled. Well it was sleeting side ways and cold, when I got in and handed her my papers, she smiled and said she was sorry...she hadn't seen any other trucks all day and I was her first. She pointed to the counter and said "The coffee and doughnuts are fresh" grab some...
The best 20 minutes I ever spent with DOT...
Similar experience in Red Rock BC 2 Christmas ago. Had a previous run in with this scale master about a year prior. Christmas Eve 1700ish, mainly empty body job hotshot truck and got parked. Took 5 min to get all my paperwork and go in, I get handed a candycane and told "Have a Merry Christmas and thanks for driving safe all year!"
Fwiw too, 0 pull ins at that scale which I pass regularly in the last 14mos ...
@@karensecor3991 Later in my career...I worked as a safety manager at a terminal, I was tasked to deal with people's trucks who quit or terminated. Some of those trucks basically looked and smelled like Hazmat scenes. We had a young man who quit, when I walked out to the truck him and opened the passenger door...I started laughing...he asked what was so funny. I told him he could kiss his doggy deposit good by and get ready to pay some more. There wasn't anything that wasn't covered in dog hair, and the pupper did a job chewing things up in cab and sleeper. All told I never had this problem because I ran team with same guy for four and half years...and we where both the same way..."Neat freaks".
That is a nice scale to pull thru. well thought out.@@SPD_driver
The Maryland DOT told me it's seat belts. They said that someone who is driving unsafely without a seat belt probably has an unsafe truck. I haven't been inspected since learning this in 2011.
@@JMHTruck32005I have a pitbull. You would never know any animals were ever in the truck. She doesn't shed or chew and is super clean. Fantastic dog. She's all sweet and very cuddly too.
you don't go in on a green light. that is the point of prepass
Exactly!
yup that's why they pay for the pre pass! just like the canada/america F.A.S.T. pass lane
Some companies are getting rid of pre- pass and just going with eld software built in like drivewyze
Years ago I was pulled into a scale house and asked to bring my paper work in. I had my scale ticket bill of laden as well as my permit book. As the officer went over my paper work and I showed him my permits, He yelled over to the other drivers looking for the permits and such, Drivers this is how it should be done he has everything neat and orderly didn't have to look for anything or back to his it's all here. He has no idea how good that made me feel.🙂
Did he give you a sticker or a cookie ?

Aww what a guy
Follow the prepass. The sign before the weigh station says if your transponder equipped follow the transponder signal.
Yes
I’m truly grateful to learn about the weight scales but I hope that woman doesn’t get in trouble or worse fired for sharing that information because it’s now on the Internet 🤔
Why would she get fired? None of that stuff is a secret, even I've asked before
She seems knowledgeable, but Louisiana has scale masters or whatever they call them. They are not DOT officers. Its one of several states that uses non police officers.
@@kierandonahue1616if she gets fired, how is that your problem?
@@Liynkx She wont get fired as she isnt white...They can do what they want unless white!
She won’t get fired, because how they use their system isn’t a secret. You can go to any scale house and ask questions and they won’t mind telling you. Keep a good safety rating and you won’t have a problem.
Got a green light at the Blythe, California scale one night. Everyone else was going in but I didn't. CHiPs came out of the median and stopped me. When he walked up and saw the green light still blinking, he thought fast and asked if I didn't change lanes too quickly. I told him I looked, signaled and went around the slowing trucks. He cut me loose immediately.
Never seen that scale open at night
That’s because he new that if you get the green you go past
Very nice of them to give this information.
Correction, very nice of HER. Actual DOT higher ups just want that money.
almost all weigh stations have that sign saying something to the effect of "all trucks must weigh." For two good reasons.
1. Those stations opened before prepass was a thing. They don't remove the sign, they just add the "prepass trucks follow in cab signals" sign a little further away.
2. That sign is still important for trucks where the owner was too cheap to buy the prepass.
If the weigh station is equipped and giving trucks a bypass signal, pulling the driver over for bypassing the scale is entrapment and a lawsuit waiting to happen.
The only time I am ignoring a bypass signal sent to my truck is when the station has electronic signs explicitly instructing my truck to enter when I drive past them.
Nowadays I don't know if they're cheap or just plain broke
Here's the thing. Sign says all trucks must enter scales when open. That's for trucks not equipped with in cab signals (PrePass). Other sign says follow your in cab signals. If your signal gives you a green light you do not have to go in. That's why the PrePass light stays on flashing for a certain amount of time in case DOT wants to pull you over. Red PrePass light and run the scale when you get pulled over it's going to be flashing red. Your caught. Green light you're good. FYI if PrePass is flashing yellow (Amber) you do have to go in.
Thank you for this!
Glad it was helpful!
Great information and knowledge you will gain when you follow Shawn’s life as a trucker! He was my trainer almost a year ago and helped me gain so much knowledge.
Thanks Mike
If one device indicates I can bypass, I'm going to bypass. If everything indicates me to enter, I will still bypass if I cannot fit on the exit ramp at a proper following distance
Yep exactly lane full I’m going on by regardless of sign or Prepass
yea before in my area there would be lines of trucks blocking the right lane on the freeway just trying to get in the scale. later on they realized hey once the off ramp is full they switch the sign to bypass or closed until the off-ramp is empty again.
21 trucks is alot of revenue.if they catch anyone selling those should go to prison for a long time.
Preferably in the dirt, permanently
Dumb enough to not be insured !!!!
@@markskibo5159, the owner of trucks burglarized, states that he does have insurance... but that it's going to be a challenge to find the particular part for each truck.

We're in the 'End Times.'
Prison is to damm good for them. They stole drivers livelyhoods. that is unforgivable...
there are weigh in motion scales on the interstate. They aren’t as precise because of high speed, if you are close to weight limit you get pulled in to check on the more accurate scales.
As a driver from Louisiana, I've never went in when the prepass is green, and they've never came after me or sent a ticket in.
First time I've ever heard of infrared on the tires or pull in on green bypass. Glad I watched this video! Keep doing what you doing
Believe it, got pulled in to the scale on Hwy 2 in Nebraska. The system detected I had a flat. due to the sensors in the road that checked the pressure at highway speed.
$50.00 fine
Yep second that.. they can check your tires while your rolling now.. Got pulled in Oklahoma/Ft. Smith I40 scale for a flat tire.. luckily didn't get a ticket but had to get it fixed before I could take back off.. 😐
@@michaelhatico7526no, it doesn’t check the pressure.. flat tires don’t have pressure. What they do it’s infrared.. means heat sensors.. flat or low pressure tires generate more heat.
I got pulled in twice entering Oklahoma heading east for a low trailer tire and also in Arizona heading west on the 10 and both times they let me go haha. I was very polite and all paperwork was in order. 😂
That’s Vanburan Arkansas , place has been ran by the Gestapo for decades. They checked my truck 20 years ago for radar
Chicken Coops in other states don't follow the same rules. Most will tell you to follow incab signal, if the sign telling you to pull in but you got a bypass on your prepass or drivewyze then you go ahead and bypass.
That's my understanding but you heard the lady😊
If my unit says bypass I go.If sign says all trucks enter I don't.If ramp is full I go.And if their sign says go but my unit says no I go.Been out here 27 years never been run down for blowing a scale
For years my company had no safety violation, the minutes we start getting bad scores, we start getting pull more
Nope, that prepass flashes green I'm gonna keep on going down the road! ✌️
I was a "full grown" in Kentucky for 15 years, working a stretch of I75, often in a "plain white wrapper" 2000 model Z-28 running speed enforcement. I always loved the truckers, i would get so tickled talking-to them on the CB. Id have to flip the stobes on to prove it was me on the radio. Sure i ran across some idiots (2 that come to mind were JB Hunt, female drivers, between the 2 they killed 3 people, one guy burned alive, and gave me PTSD)
I run western Canada, and up here, mainly in BC, green light on our prepass system is a bypass regardless of the sign for the inspection station/weighscale. No light, or temporary locations, follow signs.
Confirmed "park bring papers" criteria varies depending on location and blitzes. Obscured plates or NSC/DOT info, taillights covered with snow/ice, or with the IR cams targetting brakes and tires (that's why there's the speed decreases into coops)--if 3 of your 8 brakes are colder than the rest, they're likely out of adjustment. Overall mechanical looks of the truck.
But, there is randomization, ive been told "you're #6, you're up for an inspection". I've also been told "you looked like an easy quick pass inspection so i picked you" (quota!). Bad scores or other heat score issues and you'll be more likely to get pulled.
I get a green light on pre pass...I'm staying on hiway no matter what
The worst dot scale in country possible is Cabazon ca..

Great content. My wife and I both enjoy watching your channel. You have a beautiful family.
THE PERSON WHO DID THE JOB, KNEW EACH TRUCK, KNEW EXACTLY WHAT TIME TO HIT THEM AND HAS OR HAD A DRUG PROBLEM! KNEW THE SECURITY! KNEW WHERE TO GET CASH FOR THEM.
Know your tandem requirements for the state you're in. Luckily our trailers have a cheat sheet right above the tandem release location cause I was counting in the wrong direction when I 1st started 😅.
A buddy of mine bypassed a scale in Missouri when the sign said CLOPED. He assumed that meant closed and kept going. The officer that pulled him over had no sympathy, and it cost my buddy $250. The officer said that the sign didn’t say the actual word “closed” so he should have known to pull in. Seemed ridiculous to me, but at least we got a new joke about the word “CLOPED” 😂
This is one of those things that would have been easy to fight in court because any person would have reasonably concluded someone just mis-spelt closed. This is as close to entrapment as you can get if it isn't already.
I would have taken a picture for company lawyers, and my own entrapment lawsuit
I'm glad I'm at a good company, we hardly ever get pulled in. When I do, I never have an issue because my record is perfect... except Ohio because hazmat always have to pull in. That 71 Jeffersonville scale is ran by jerk and the PECO guys or whatever they are called. Guy got mad one day because he couldn't find anything wrong after 3 hours.
The scales in the off ramp at a weight station also can measure the speed of when you cross them. So if it's posted at 30 you better be doing about 30
Between the boarder line of Pa and Maryland I was pulled over for ignoring that sign bc prepass signal me to bypass . Officer chase me down in a white unmarked dodge pickup truck, told me I’m getting ticket. He also spoke of those prepass not even going to alert yu in the state of Maryland just so you can pay attention to the sign without questioning.
FMCSA score has a lot to do if they pull you in, also if your truck is over a certain weight they might also pull you in……
The CPC and the CPC4 are back in stock at Freightliner. Best thing to do is contact your local dealer and let them know. This way they can try to have these CPC’s on file. This what they had to do in Southern California. Now things are getting back to normal as far as availability goes.
It sure isn't great to see it happen to a small company, although we ought to see this happen to the mega carriers! Especially FMCSA with their automated experiments.
FMCSA with their automated experiments?
You mean technology to make me and my Family safer !
Don't tell Me I'm Class of 77
Freightliners are easy to break into. Got to protect the locking mechanism from string. I opened one once with a 6ft piece of string cause one of the guys locked his keys in the truck at the dock door I wanted. Cover the bolt that goes up and down. You can slip string inside the door and pull it up.
Dont make it too hard to break into or you'll be busting your window when you lock the keys in it. I go around the bottom of the glass and push up on the underside of the lock post on cascadias. M2 same thing. Rubber wiper seal pulls right off for easy access. If I had one of these trucks I'd somehow reinforce the CPC. Like steel plate around it or something, or extend the wiring harness and relocate it somewhere else
Great content
Great info!!
Appreciate it
Very good info about the prepass. But the info concerning the infrared tire readout systems makes you more diligent during your pre trip.
Thanks!
No problem!
In 2010, I had a Pre-Pass and still got the RED and pulled in. Luckily everything thing was OK 😊
unless cop headlights come on behind me idc. my 11hr clock keeps counting down, no time for tht BS
CSA score and recent incidents within the company have a big effect on red or green prepass lights. Explained to me by the Laurel, Montana scale which is nearly always open.
I'm surprised by that "must pull in if it says all trucks but you get prepass bypass" thing she said. I've used my bypass dozens of times despite it saying "all trucks" and no prepass-specific sign, and I haven't been chased.
Now, there have been times I've been told to come in specifically by a lit sign while also getting the bypass. I don't chance that. I got a specific "enter" so I enter.
If you get a green light on Prepass you keep going regardless of what there sign says now if you get a sign saying by pass or keep going and you get a red light on Prepass you have to go in that’s the agreement Prepass has with all states that use Prepass if you are unsure call Prepass they will set you straight
That is how you suppose to do it tho
@@kinggk1832 supposed to do what by pass or go in? If you think it’s go in you are wrong. If you get a green light you by pass
Unless hauling permitted O/D or hazmat (*always* have to go in) the in-cab signal supersedes the road signs. And that means that if the sign says bypass but prepass is a red light, you have to go in.
For what it's worth; the paperwork that comes in the box with the prepass says to enter if the signs tell you to enter regardless of the greenlight
Every station is different they can pull you in for any reasons.
They should get rid of scale houses and invest more in to pre-pass systems.
The system is less bias than officers.
A big company I have a dedicated route with had around 13 of their freightliners cpus stolen on a Saturday night last year. It really screwed them up, all the morning delivery routes were screwed.
Yes that’s correct. Better safe than sorry. It happened to me. Seen the signage of “all trucks must stop at scales” but my prepass gave me the green light so I rolled on by. Next thing you know DOT pulls me over. Explained I was taught thought if I have a green light I do not have to enter. However DOT said it doesn’t matter. If that sign says “all trucks must stop at scales” you must stop! DOT Let me go off with a warning since I only had 2 months of experience.
Depends on the state....in ohio if you are hazmat and get green dotted u still need to pull in
The whole purpose of a prepass is to get a green light to by bypass the scales when open
My boy Shawn!!! Thanks for sharing @muthatrucker @truckimglifewithshawn
Hey hey
Prepass states if you get a green light on the prepass device but the light at the DOT scale tells you to pull in, you have to pull in and get weighed or inspected.
hazmat go in the scale regardless…at least that’s what I was told by my safety manager…but that’s when only hauling hazmat if they pull you in and talk to you so they can challenge your knowledge to see if you know what the hell you’re doing!
Ehh not true. I was told that also. But most of the time even under hazmat load I get bypassed. Many times while other trucks non-hazmat are being pulled in I’ll get a bypass while under hazmat load.
& many times they won’t have u come in w/ paperwork for a scale pull in, instead just a roll through and exit.
Hey thanks for your video 📹 is help a lot about prepass...
I thought we all understood that, green or not, if the sign says all trucks must enter, all trucks MUST enter. 🤷🏾♂️
If I get a green light on prepass I'm keeping on trucking if I'm not mistaken always follow prepass ,TN has the tire detection technology also
Couple weeks ago someone broke into some of our trucks and stole the wiring harness and messed bunch stuff up it's getting ridiculous!!
Not sure if anyone knows this but I would like to know in Colorado and north west can you just have tire socks or do you still need to have tire chains in the truck just in the truck for inspection.
I had that happen in Kentucky, then saw it on another truck. 🤯🤯🤯🤯
You would think that all trucking companies would have cameras installed all over their properties for this reason alone.
Someone needs to develop a relocation kit for those items. Relocating them to a hidden spot or a spot that's hard to reach - whoever develops this is going to be rich
Relocation kits available from a company in north carolina. They also rebuild them as well.

@@RalphJHusky ya I live up here and it is ridiculous. Every scale house has 4-5 DOT cars in four or five trucks pulled in being inspected exit the scale house drive 10 miles and seen another truck pulled over along the highway by a mobile DOT 30 miles later again, the same thing.

Not sure where you're getting your info on pricing of CPCs but mine just died in my 2016 Coronado and Freightliner put in a remaned one for just under $2000 including labor. The CPC was $1150 remaned and $1800 new. This is model 4.0 and is for a DD15. I can upload receipt if interested.
The 2 tone color ones always get picked on.
im going to guess on the prepass issue that particular scale might have a sign on the interstate that says "truck pull in scale" "truck bypass scale". if so i thought the sign did override the prepass. otherwise if its a generic "all trucks must enter" the prepass supercedes it and you follow the prepass. she did mention the weigh in motion on the interstate and those are usually accompanied by the sign that tells individual trucks to enter or bypass.
No, signs do not override transponders. I have bypassed with a green light on PrePass or a bypass on Drivewyze against the electronic sign telling me to go in countless times and have never been chased.
Here in Cali, there are signs that say "All trucks stop at scales unless given the bypass signal". The LED signs only ever say "All trucks stop at scales" or "scales closed do not enter".
I have never gone into the scales when Im given the green light regardless of what the LED sign says.

Where i live in Florida there is a federal way station on the interstate years ago there was a road skip a couple of exits and get around the way station but the fix it and put a bunch of cameras on the road and the exit so they can see who’s trying to go around.
They have had the infrared cameras in California for a few years now an officer told me I had a cracked rim an gave me a warning on my inspection I asked him how he spotted it because I never noticed it while doing pretrips he said they have cameras that zoom in on the wheels this was in the beginning of 2022 it was a tiny crack around the lugnut barely noticeable thats why i never spotted it but that infrared camera did
If no visible cue ? Usually it's weight and speed on the highway scale . Total weight and axle weight . Some highway scale are bumpy . So often 55 mph is max on those . Some state , is the permit . There is a way around this but i can not recal if some state require sticker or chip
Isn't this called "PROFILING"? Isn't that considered illegal? Oh wait a minute! I live in a communist country, this normal now! 😅😅

Exactly
The problem I see coming is stolen CPU units have serial numbers and when somebody buys that to fix their truck when it gets plugged in they’re going to see that it was taken from another truck and they’re going to have to return it to the proper owners. They cannot use it in a different truck, I know this because the CPU unit on my western star failed and had to be replaced.
You do not go in when prepass gives a green light. They can't have it both ways. For over 20 yrs I never went into the crap house on green light. I never got into trouble.
Never seem to get pulled for inspection driving the septic rig on a rainy day……..
That's new info to me. When I get incab bypass I bypass. Never heard that b4
Ecu Pro repairs and replaces Cpc4 modules. At a fraction of the cost of what random people are selling them for.
If you are pulling a Hazmat tanker you have to pull on the scales regardless if you have the green light
but if your pulling foodgrade you dont
If it's a prepass state then you should be following on board signals only. If it doesn't respond, then you follow signage. At least that's my logical understanding of prepass. Their duty is to report a green or red appropriately on the prepass or turn it off.
I'm gonna stop and ask other states as well😊
Well, that's good to know. I passed a scale last week and got the bypass in the truck, but the road sign said all trucks enter. I think it was Florida. I went on in cause I wasn't sure
My Houston company got hit too this weekend.
Louisiana if sign says "All trucks go in scale"they wont send you a signal for prepass,I pass through there twice a week.
Thanks a lot…..
Goin where no trucker dare go!!!! 😂😂😂 but as for the pre pass when it says all trucks enter is that a electronic board or just a sign? I see signs by some that say all trucks right lane but they don't say enter weigh stations. They are permanent signs but they have the pre pass scanner. I've gotten green and just kept goin at those!
I have been a investigator for 25 years for the Kentucky state board of trucking This smells like inside job
I always wonder how they did it in the scale house
Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, are my running states and I love it because they dont invest in to much in their scales.aaand you can dodge em easy
Azdot said if you have green light on your device just keep going even the sight said must exit to scale UNLESS YOU CARRING HAZMART THEN YOU HAVE TO GO IN .. Azdot on i 40 eastbount said
For anyone hauling Hazmat, be aware of the pre pass restrictions in certain states. In Arizona and Arkansas, if you’re hauling Hazmat and you get a green light in your pre pass, you must still enter the scale. Failure to do so, if that officer decides to follow you, results in a felony charge for “Bypassing a Port of Entry”. Ask me how I know. Had to get an attorney to get it reduced to misdemeanor.
How would you know if those infrared sensors aren't dirty and they're just giving false readings when anything rolls over it
Just bypass on any light otherwise they’ll find something anyway. If DOT officer a women that means you are definitely in trouble.
I miss having PrePass. Had it with the company I was leased to last year, I just leased on with this new carrier whose rating is not so good, soooooo, I decided to go without. 😏
She is right even if you get a green but that sign say for you to come in means for you to come in
Looks like the 1st west scale house on 20 from Vicksburg ms. That 1 stays open and bringing trucks in like they don't have nothing better to do, just slowing you down .
