    For anyone confused, this is a Diesel Electric truck, similar in functionality to a Diesel Locomotive. Not exactly, but similar. I believe there is a CAT C15 under the hood. The CAT runs a generator that charges the batteries, and the batteries run electric motors at the wheel ends with a combined 80,000lbs/ft of torque. I know damn well your freightshaker coronado ain’t making 80,000 pound feet at the wheels.

      A normal truck might be making 80k at the wheels, that number is after the torque converter, not at the motor shaft itself. It's like the hummer EV, they claim some insane number but it's "only" got 1k ft/lbs of torque.

    • @JeffS96
      @JeffS96 9 месяцев назад +23

      It's not a c15, I can't remember the exact displacement but it's under 10L, I think 8.7L?
      Edit: I got curious. It's a C9, which is still an impressive motor at 456hp/1540lb-ft.

    • @JeffS96
      @JeffS96 9 месяцев назад +12

      Also a regular diesel truck can put around 100,000lb-ft down at the wheels. But only in low gear. As soon as you start grabbing gears that torque starts disappearing.
      Edit: I decided to fact check and realized that my source for the figure didn't take drive line losses into account. I'd say something between 80,000 and 100,000 depending on your exact gearing.

    A lot of you don't seem familiar with Edison Motors. This is a diesel electric truck, not a fully electric like a Tesla. The same technology that powers frieght trains. You don't have to worry about charging station or extra load on the power grid because this truck has a diesel generator. You can also charge them by plugging them in or putting solar panels on trailers to reduce fuel cost. Its the convenience of diesel with the power and preformance of electric. If you look into this company its actually pretty cool. If I'm not mistaken the owner was a log truck driver. This is gonna be big if they can get it right

      @@joshuacheung6518Torque through a driveline. Since the motor is in the axle, it merely tries to twist the axle housing, which is stout and can handle it with zero noticable deflection. With the planetary hubs it further reduces the angular torque load creating more of inline torque load with the wheels. Basically, a fantastic design.

    • @MineStrongth
      @MineStrongth 11 месяцев назад +129

      @joshuacheung6518 He's talking about when the frame rails twist due to the torque being applied by the engine in a normal truck.
      The engine is mounted to the rails at the front. It creates rotational energy perpendicular to the axles. When there is a heavy load and the engine creates high torque, sometimes the force required to move the truck forward is greater than the force it takes to twist the frame rails. So, the rails will twist until the forces ballance out and the truck begins to move.
      To see a good example of this, look up big rig drag racing. You will see extreme frame twisting where a front wheen comes off the ground.
      The reason it's not an issue in this truck is because the electric drive motors are integrated into each axle where a standard differential typically resides. So all the torque is limited to the axle body and the stabilizers. The stabilizers just have to keep the axle body from rotating instead of the wheels.

    • @chaz706
      @chaz706 9 месяцев назад +12

      You know... the invention of the Diesel Electric Locomotive was to fix a simpler problem: the transmission.
      The transmission was always either too big, too heavy, or too inefficient. The setup was always incapable of performing the duties of a locomotive engine.
      So someone thought of using a Diesel-Electric Drivetrain. It worked because it WAS capable of performing the duties of a locomotive engine and it was simpler and lighter overall.
      The fact that it used less fuel was only seen as a bonus at the time but it proved to be invaluable.
      Diesel Electric Locomotives were under development in the 1930's but were delayed due to the onset of WWII when all diesel/gasoline fuel stocks were rationed for the war effort.

Highway driving is mostly just go and hardly no stopping, so getting power back from regen braking won't happen as often. Might see some savings in fuel costs, but the trailer would have to have a battery pack to help with the electric load for range. For now OTR is going to be strictly diesel.

    • @gorkyd7912
      @gorkyd7912 10 месяцев назад +1

      Yep its a great idea.
      I'm still skeptical that electric power can ever be as strong as fossil-fuel. In theory there's more power but in practice it's pretty apples-to-oranges. The power generated by diesel going through a gearbox is just different and I don't know if electric motors will completely ever match it because they're physically limited by the number of copper windings, size and weight of the battery, and the amperage possible through all the connections.
      For instance, the fastest vehicles on earth are still fossil-fuel powered. All the airplanes are still fossil-fuel powered.
      In fact there is an "all-electric passenger jet" but it only goes 250 miles which is basically a guarantee it will run out of power and crash land if it can't immediately land for any reason. For comparison, the cheapest fossil-fuel airplane is the Piper PA-28 Cherokee, it has a range of over 400 miles, and you could probably double that just by adding a bigger fuel tank.

      That was a hundred years ago. Today, electric motors at sea do the same for the 100,000-ton (likely more) USS Gerald R. Ford, diesel-electric drive just like this runs the 237,000-ton cruise ship Wonder of the Seas, not to mention all the heavy-duty freight trains that are running about.
      If electric motors are powerful enough to be used in place of diesel engines that weigh 50 times as much as a semi truck can legally carry, they're powerful enough to be used to drive those trucks.

    You never see these electric semis at work. But if you do see it with a trailer, it's usually pulling around a gocard or a side by side.

      I'm excited to see trucking finally catch back up with what the railroad figured out 70 years ago, diesel electric should be the way forward for trucks. Electric trains on nuclear+renewable powered energy grids and electric Hybrids for the roads.

    Standard diesel trucks will do burn outs bobtail. I used to run a 600 hp 60 series detroit that would spin the tires on dry pavement with an empty trailer if you weren't paying attention to how much push water you were feeding it. No hate on what Edison is doing here, I just see a lot of comments talking about how impressive the power is on this electric truck. This is pretty standard to what you could expect from a diesel also.

      Yeah, but you are also having more instant torque from some electric motors

    Love all the people who couldn’t take a moment to research and learn that this is a diesel electric truck, so basically a train on tires.

    I find it scary just how quite it is and quick. Silent wreking ball on the road. It good to be able to hear where large vehicles are on the road .... i always listen for traffic when driving on hilly roads with blind spots or cannot see traffic coming.
