My brother was the co-pilot for that Catalina you are talking about and I know the true story of why it crashed killing Philippe Cousteau. Philippe stalled it weeks before crash landing at Victoria Lake. Previous employed as an FAA inspector, my brother inspected it after this happened and deemed the PBY un-airworthy. My brother said they refused to repair it, and he resigned because of this very reason. Philippe died weeks later. My brother said they had also eaten dinner with Idi Amin. He brought back a trophy from the palace. My brother was also rated for flying helicopters during Viet Nam and flew the camera helicopter for Bell Areospace. The Cousteau PBY had two engines.
From what I understand, Phillipe was testing the plane after some repairs. He tested a takeoff with the wheels down. He hit a sand bar and flipped the plane, decapitating himself.
@@paulnoble2524 the repairs were probably from the prior crash with my brother. All I know is my brother said it wasn't airworthy after Phillippee crashed it the first time. Not sure of details or quality of repair.
