Cousteau and his Calypso. God I loved watching his movies when I was a kid. Thanks for bringing memories back. Will definitely rewatch everything I can find. One of the most iconic people of the 20th century. What an incredible person he was.
Many kids don't realise why the narrator voice in Spongebob Squarpants has a french accent :3
HOLY SHIT REALLY
fuck im bad at history
My late fur child Eddie, absolutely Hated that theme song. Hr go from seqartzing to hollering to run nuts.
Bobby Siecker In a recent episode, SpongeBob mimics the Narrator. Whilst doing so, he wears the red hat.
JayDeeJayEssHaitch Ironic since both are voiced by the same person Tom Kenny for those that don't know
Im always constantly amazed and shocked how humanity just dumped everything into water and the sea. Barrels of nuclear waste? outta site outta mind!!!
If you have a better idea for the garbage that cities can afford and doesn't pollute in another way?
...especially the russian navy. Some dimwits had the 'great idea' to shoot holes into the barrels with highly radioactive waste to make them sink faster...!
exploding the marine life and those effects there of, water is actually really good at blocking and dissipating radiation, so the idea not completely crazy if dont care what happens to life directly near the barrel and there secondary effects. tho won't recommend it.
+Adam Jeffords Excluding*
+scarletfluerr yeah. recycle. ALL WASTE must, in the future, be recycled. nature doesn't produce garbage. wonder why? because in nature everything is a cycle.
Growing up in the 60's and 70's, the adventures of Jacques and the Calypso were second only to 'Star Trek' on my list of "must-see" TV programmes.
I grew up watching this great man. Good job, Jacques Cousteau!
Jacques Yves Cousteau has been one of my heroes since I was a child. And I got to go to a lecture of his on manatees when I was a tween. I even got to speak with him. The silent world is an incredible story ( he used to blow up bombs underwater for the navy) and he was so inspiring
Thank you ERB for making me discover this legend of a man!
I loved watching Cousteau as a child growing up in NY - perhaps a somewhat flawed character who made some mistakes along the way, but the man left an incredible legacy
I have always admired Cousteau. I have a book he wrote on the Octopus and his experiences with that amazing animal.
The Commander Cousteau were a great guy. Studying underwater life was his true passion and he really loved the Caribbean sea. I remember the Calypso docking in Bouillante port many years ago. He is one of these men who make me proud to say I'm French.
Vive la France !
I think I've seen just about all of Jacques Cousteau documentaries..
He was one hell of a storyteller and an underwater investigator. I'll never
forget his contributions to the sea world.
Robert Smith cool cat
i grew up watching Jacques Cousteau's documentaries, it was so new and infortive at that time. He was a great man who travelled the seas with so much passion...RIP
Jacques and Marlin Perkins.
Whoo a timeline!
I really want to thank whoever came up with that little extra, i find it very hard to conceptualise different parts of history, especially if several of them come up within a few minutes.
So again thank you to the person who put in the extra effort to make things much easier to me.
his son, Jean-Michel Cousteau, Visited my school a few years ago. Interesting experience.
Nope, a Middle School in Kalamazoo County Michigan
+Andrew Goss
4 hours later.....
didn't he also do a short for Finding Nemo?
sounds familiar, probably
His adventures cam e on t.v. every Sunday evening...when I was a child... I loved watching him so much...so glad I can watch him again years later ...thank you for this segment
I used to watch Cousteau's wonderful documentaries with my dear grandad when I was a child. Good memories.
My Most Favorite Human. A True EXCEPTION . A man who EARNED HIS RESPECT.
Wow Hank, great moves, keep it up. Proud of ya!
Papa bless!
Omg you tards are everywhere.
mmhhh, tards!
+Anon Kapo chill out. lemme getcha some papa johns pizza pie and some vintage 5 year pepsi max sodie pop. papa bless!
V/\
Was he inspiration for Jaques in Finding Nemo? He was French, and wanted to keep the aquarium clean.
And he was red....
Safe bet..
I was raised on Jacques Cousteau! That opening music still gives me goosebumps of joy.
Looking up this dude before I watch the rap battle.
Lol
What rap battle
@@BigDaddy-vr2ut
Look up “ERB”, you’ll find it
That timeline-thing is awesome. Usually you get buried in dates and have difficulties putting it in order and perspective. This really helps, keep it up for these kinds of historical videos!
Maybe leave some key dates/infos in a smaller font?
Love it!
And, still, to this day, we too often ignore what Monsieur Cousteau opined, relatively, long ago.
Thanks for the vid and an important reminder to save our oceans!
I've always been proud to share a birthday with such a cool person! He's a whole 88 years older than me, but still! 🎂 😊
I sense an Epic Rap Battle coming on...
I knew for a while that Steve Irwin was next, but just recently found out he was up against Cousteau. Can't wait!
i remember watching the episode where he explores the wreck of the HMHS Britannic when i was 9 and i fell in love with his series. i've accumulated at least half a dozen encyclopedias about the oceans, aquatic discoveries, and marine life over the years, all thanks to Couteau.
We need more great people like him.
He was WAY ahead of his time! Don;t forget John Denver's song Calypso
A man ahead of his time.....
I hate to nitpick but his show ran far longer than just a couple of years. I saw it in rerun with Dr Who and the like on PBS and I loved listening to him describe the ocean. I have so much deep affection for him and his efforts ((Imperfect as they sometimes were).
Also inspired the voice of the narrator in spongebob!
do you have a source for that?
4 hours laterr..
Vittamar Akbin Tom Kenny and Steven Hillenburg.
I like the timeline. Helpful.
*Jacques Costeau here to spit flow*
Now I see a similaritiy between a volcano explorer Maurice Kraft and ocean explorerJacques Cousteau because of a red hat ^^
I wouldnt be surprised that the first one was inspired by the second...
I grew up listening to his melodious voice telling me about the beauty of the oceans. Wish Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom they expanded my view of the world.
this is a fantastic video! I live the use of the timeline. well done scishow. Do more!
Cousteau's tv series was my favorite childhood tv show. I would throw a tantrum if prevented to see it. Thanks so much for this look back at my childhood hero.
He also inspired The Life aquatique of steve zissou which is an amazing movie
This is perfect. I was supposed to watch a 30 minute video but I found this for 5 minutes thank you
Once upon a time (before personal computers, the Internet, cell phones), I recall seeing "The Silent World" in the school library. (You know, those places where you find BOOKS.;) I bought the paperback book via the Scholastic Book Club and read it until the pages fell apart. Then I bought another. I didn't see the movie version of the book until some time later, since I lived in a small sugar plantation town. I've seen it from time to time along with episodes of "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau." It is unfortunate that the oceans of the world are as mysterious now as they used to be in the 1950's. (At least there are "Coelacanths" to find and giant squid to marvel at, with the occasional Oarfish freaking out the public.;)
This was awesome. Great job, SciShow Team!
Thank you once again, for teaching me a bunch of stuff I didn't know about another amazing human being. I appreciate it.
it's amazing how much contribution one man was about to make to a field of silence.
Jacques Cousteau was probably one of the best humans of all time
I was named after this man. I am proud to say this.
Keep fighting the good fight, Hank! Maybe one day we can live in a society of well informed well educated citizens.
That would be so much my dream
Le Commandant Cousteau's adventures captivated me when I was a kid. Watched the adventures of the Calypso and the Alcyone, and also read all the bandes dessinées.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou!
Cousteau, tout simplement un grand homme et un immense symbole du genie francais a travers le monde !
Thanks, Hank! I grew up watching Jacques Cousteau on TV and wanted to become a marine biologist; however, my life came off the tracks while I was still young, and many of my dreams were never realized.
I love Cousteau! he's show was my favorite TV show as a kid
I just got my open water diving license this week. Guess I couldnt have if Coustea hadnt invented thee aqua lung, or founded all those organizations
I have watched every episode of his show, I am a huge fan of his.
I loved watching J.C. tv show reruns when I got up for school early in the morning. I'd always get up a few minutes early to catch him, and I often watched so long I would be late for school.
Wow, I couldn't have found a better video when searching for information about him. Concise with just enough information; the way my brain likes it lol
My grand-children go to the International Jacques Cousteau school here in North Vancouver! Many thanks for this historical overview!
Remembering Jacques-Yves Cousteau Born on June 11, 1910. He was a French naval officer, oceanographer, filmmaker and author. He co-invented the first successful Aqua-Lung, open-circuit SCUBA (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus). The apparatus assisted him in producing some of the first underwater documentaries. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Cousteau
I remember watching on Sundays when I was a kid.
It meant 2 things to me looking back.
1. I was sick
2 . I was grounded
I loved his show, especially the opening theme, and the futuristic styles of submersibles and scuba rquipment.❤
Thanks for sharing with us.
I was fascinated by his show.
Whoa
Maybe a good historical figure to do a Scishow Kids song about? This guys was amazing for the work he did and the honesty around how he initially did it. He's proof the a change can happen within someone even though his culture around him wouldn't have necessarily noticed/cared if he hadn't.
When I was a kid I used to love watching "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau"
Really like the new timeline format.
Very, very informative. Thanks.
I never missed an episode when I was young. Too bad we lost him. We’d lean down much more about the oceans if he was still here. I’d like to have seen his face when they found the titanic. Rip
I used to read all of his comic books when I was young, I really liked the 2 about the wreck of Antikythera expedition.
I'm glad they mentioned the controversies and questionable practices. Great job on not hiding the 'less known' sides of the story
it was steve zissou who did all these things while looking fly in his custom adidas and glock strapped to his side.
Indeed, you are correct sir
that movie is based on his life.
yeah i know dude lol
i wasn't sure if you were joking or being serious
Very good overview, thank you
Superb account of Cousteau. Very entertaining and also balanced.
this would've been so helpful two weeks ago it would have helped so much since I just wrote a report on him
Thanks to this guy
Sniff.. I loved that show! It was part of my childhood.
I know Jacques Cousteau from an American dad parody. Thanks, mindless entertainment.
Cousteau is my father's childhood hero ! He has all the books "Les Aventures du Commandant Cousteau", but i never really dug into it. I might give it a try now, thanks !
Love it
I have all of his books
Before I acquired a fear of deep water and gave up my dreams of ocean exploration, he was one of my biggest idols. Still is to this day, and I even have an entire set of books written by him, but sadly, even the sight of deep water drives me to panic, nowadays.
Scubadog When and how did your fear of deep water begin?
@@thebrowithnoname1703 only going to comment cause it’s been years obviously I can’t speak for them but for most people it’d be when they do a serious first time trip traveling the ocean , once reality sits in and you’re isolated without a way off or land in sight it can really change your perspective if you’re of the faint of heart type
wow I love it
When the Queen Mary arrived in Long Beach, CA they built a marine museum in the ship which influenced me greatly as a child. Sadly it was dismantled and closed.
Once upon a time, we valued educating our society to affect positive change.
I really miss his documentaries.
And his voice.
Ai, Calypso, the places you've been to
The things that you've shown us, the stories you tell
Ai, Calypso, I sing to your spirit
The men who have served you so long and so well.
John Denver is the best.
He really is.
To be true as the tide
Free as a windswell
What a great man
I remember watching Jacques films in the 6th grade back in the day when we watched films from a reel-to-reel projector. DVD's and even VCR's weren't invented yet back in 1982. Now VHS is dead, and DVD's are on their way to the graveyard as USB thumbdrives are taking their place. Wow, I feel old now, shit!!
Awesome
I looked up to him so much as a kid.
awesome
“Take a look on how destruction your old films are. Silent World? More like Silent Worldstar! If you want to count fish please take the reef tour! Don’t go throwing c4 on the sea floor!” Steve Irwin
I met Jean Cousteau, his son. He came to my college and gave us a lecture on ocean pollution, he was a really nice guy.
Ty Jaques! I'm enjoying our lunch , and of course, it would not be complete, without your legendary , red hat , which I put on , just for today ! I'm here, again , for Tuesdays with Maury , at the good ol Recovery Cafe, Everett..celebrating recovery , one day at a time ! I especially appreciate your many contributions , and life efforts , in saving the Whales . Without you, I'm afraid , I wouldn't be here, to enjoy this free lunch ! 🤣🤣 (Me being a whale, and all) Xo Joe DRT THA GURU ON All Platforms 🥰🙏 shalom brother! #rojo forever
One of my inspirations :)
Is this guy on every educational channel on RUclips?!
Here from erb, anyone else?
Hank looks Gangsta AF!
I feel stupid
I thought it he was just a Bill Murray character.
Your not stupid, just too young to remember pre-cable television. You have probably never seen an episode of "F-troop" or "Green Acres" either. Don't feel bad, I can't name most of the popular artists in the music industry of today.
Scott, he iternet needs mor people like you.
Thank you, very nice to hear.
Don't worry Scott, none of the popular artists in the music industry today are worth remembering.
Spoken like a true old man. Haha
Cool , he’s really cool
Here I go...Deep Type Flow...Jacques Cousteau could never get this low... ~Wu Tang
I was actually, seriously just listening to "Waiting for Cousteau" by Jean-Michel Jarre. Good stuff!
please do a vid on the science behind scuba diving
