Early days with the Canon R1. The mission of the day was to test the Animal Tracking AF on birds in flight against the ocean background. This is one of the most difficult focusing scenarios for a camera and lens combination. And wow, the R1 did great! So far it is meeting my expectations. I just need to dial in the custom settings a bit more and then I think I'll be good to go. On Kauai I love photographing waves. What do you like to photograph near your home? The R1 has an insane 40 frames a second. Do you think this is useful or is it overkill? Let me know! Have a great week. Aloha, Lee
Another wonderful session. I love the wave and seal images, I'm envious we don't see that in southern Ontario. I would definitely be interested in a session where you discuss your camera settings, you're further up the curve than I am at this point and the menus on this camera are serious stuff.
Thanks, Malcolm. This was a great morning of photography. I actually made it back there for New Year's Day and this time saw a sea turtle lounging on the beach. It is definitely one of the best wildlife walks on Kauai. And a lot more albatross now as they have migrated in for the winter. Southern Ontario, eh! I bet you get som Snowies!?! I would love to photograph snowy owls. That's one of my dream shots. Have you had any luck? Thanks for the vote on a settings video. I am planning it now and will have one ready in a week or so. Thanks again and glad you liked the video. Thank you also for the sub. I appreciate the support! Aloha, Lee
@@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai Hi Lee Yes we generally have lots of Snowy Owls in the Winter and I'm anxious to finish familiarizing myself with the R1 so I can get out and find some Owls. Almost anywhere in Canada will have Snowies in the winter but if I were you I'd plan a trip to Alberta so you could combine Owls with the Canadian Rockies. :)
@ That’s a great idea, Malcom. I’ve been through Banff and Jasper, but only photographed Peyto Lake. Would love to spend more time up that way. Once again, the snowies in your Instagram are great! I’ll start working on the next R1 video soon. I’ve ordered a monitor recorder so I can easily show the menu and settings in video form. Stay tuned ! 🤙

Very nice bird and wave shots. No doubt, you're an experienced bird/wildlife photographer. I don't know if you've ever visited the Philippines, but they have some very beautiful birds on all three of their major Islands. If you haven't already, you can probably hire one of the indigenous people to show you around the jungles if you ever plan to visit someday. They are experts at jungle survival and know just about all the native trees and animal species in their neck of the woods/jungles. I'm curious, why did you choose the R1 over the R5? I read and heard that most professional wildlife photographers who shoot Canon prefer the R5 over the R1 due to its 45 megapixels. However, based on the photos you showed in this video taken with the R1, it seems megapixel isn't a program and the colors are awesome. Mahalo for sharing.
Aloha John. Thank you for watching and for your thoughtful comment. No, I have not been to PI yet, but I would love to go. I have heard that it is very beautiful. Here in Hawaii many of my friends have family in PI and I often hear about its beauty and clear waters. This is the first time that I have heard about the great birding there. Good to know! I did a video on why I chose the R1. I’ll link it in a subsequent comment. But basically I liked the 1DX II and the R3 and feel that for the photography that I do 24 MP is enough and I think the R1 Auto focus is fantastic . Have a great week. Aloha, Lee

Great combo …great shots … very jealous 😎we got r3 1dxii and just acquired r5ii…still testing r5ii but it definitely hasn’t got the low light performance of the other 2 ..but it’s got better auto focus and 8k 60 and 45mp ..but doesn’t feel like a proper 1 series in the hand I feel so at home with them … R1 absolutely sounds fabulous I’m hoping to get one before next safari…the colours look amazing too but to be fair all canon top end do too 😎 Aolha 👍
@@alisonandguywildlifephotograph Aloha Alison and Guy, Thanks for watching and for your kind words. Yes, the R1 is the real deal. I think you will really like it. The R5 II sounds like a wonderful all rounder. I wish they would make an R5 II X or an R1 S -something with a one series body and high MP sensor. That would be on my wishlist for sure. Aloha DragSD. Thanks for watching and for your comment. That's a very good question. I think there might be a slight improvement on IQ over the R3. But it may only be psychological. The colors out of camera may be a little richer and high ISO images are very good. I am comfortable shooting at 12,800 with the R!. Whereas I capped ISO at 6400 with the R3. In all honesty, I would say that IQ alone would not justify the upgrade. There's just not that much of a difference in my opinion. But The AF and the precapture are benefits to consider. And the more robust feel (build quality of the R1. I had my R3 break twice-- once overheated and fried the motherboard and once with a broken top plate???). Thanks again for watching and for your question. Happy holidays. Aloha, Lee
