How to Photograph the Surreal in Nature
Love my R3, wish I had not bought the R5II and even think the R8 is a better camera than the R5II. I have a rental reservation for the R1 in December and looking forward to it. I really do love my R3 and if it had the pre-capture.... wow. Thanks for the video. And yes, and experienced photographer can get plenty out of 20 and 24 megapixels. Your photos are proof!! 💖🤗
@@JonnyPink65 aloha John. Thanks for watching and for your kind comment. I think the R3 will prove to be a hidden gem in Canons lineup. I wonder how it will evolve. If I get a backup I think I will go with an R3. As for the R1 I think you will really like it. After using it and getting accustomed to it it feels really good in the hand and for birds in flight the AF is like a cheat code. I’m still getting the buttons customized and set up I want them but so far so good. Thanks again! Have a wonderful Sunday. Aloha, Lee 🤙
@@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai Thank you. If I had the credit, I would just order it The R5II was a disappointment other than pre-capture coming from the R3. Really looking forward to it and when I sell the R5II, I will go ahead and get the R1 and keep the R3 as a backup. Anyone who cant get a great sharp shot with 24 megapixels (especially with the tech we have at our fingertips.......). Thank you for the the reply!! Beautiful images. 💖
@ well we can bankrupt ourself with the gear and GAS but when there is a real need it’s justified! Yes, I agree with you, the technology available to us today is crazy. Crazy good, but crazy still. Glad you like the images. Photographing wildlife gives me such joy and energy. I’m happy when the images can connect with others. Nature really does bring people together. 🤙
Hello Lee glad to see you got the R1 !!! It's an amazing camea. I am a pro photographer and do mosty modeling magazines printing, product photography a lot i mean a lot and always have shot with 1Ds Mark II which is 16.7 megapixels camera this camera is not for sports or wildlife but does great for what i do as i mentioned above and thise megapixels were good enough to get big print and very high quality images. I needed an upgrade, i was waiting for a mirrorless flagship camra that's why i didn't go with 1DX because that would not give better than i already had with 1Ds Mark II for specific shooting i do in studio. Finally i got the R1 and 24-105L 2.8 Z lens as combination . Ok, you can imagine my excitement it's an Fantastic camera and now i have everything i need. I don't do video and thise 24 megapixels are more than enough you don't want to end up when importing exposed bracket images and you end up with a huge GB file which in editing that will be a real pain. I feel i did a great investment on this at least for me jumping from 1ds Mark II to R1. Enjoy your new camera.
@@bobogate1 Aloha Yannis. Good to hear a pro perspective on this. I hope the R1 serves you well for many years to come! I plan on keeping mine for a long long time. By the way how do you like the 24-105 2.8? Amazing lens? Have a great weekend . Aloha, Lee
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai well it just replaced my 24-70 2.8L, 35mm, 50mm, and macro lens 100mm 2.8l so is like have all primes L series in one!!! So glad I got it. You definitely don't need anything else inside the studio and for landscapes too. Outside portraits you can cover everything with that lens. For those that say it's expensive, imagine getting different prime lenses how much those would cost😱. It's not expensive for what it gives you. Now amateurs always have opinions ok I skip those opinions because they really don't have a clue they want only to show off and technically they are not educated enough to understand what that lens or any lens does. Everything starts from big bang which in photography is metering and exposing for tonalities if anyone understands these then any lens gives you the maximum quality and then you understand it all what it does and what you need from a lens. Having the best lens and camera if any does not know how to expose then it's waste of money buying any lens. If you want my advice get that lens don't listen what they say all over out there it's more than an amazing lens. There are no words to describe it. Thank you Lee 😊
@ awesome!
Wow, amazing location for some beautiful photograph!!! I wish I could visit someday!!!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

So Lee Scott my name is Scott Lee and l am often mistaken for you, well by name anyway. I chose the R5ii as l been shooting wildlife with the R6ii and wanted to try more megapixels which l do enjoy but would choose the R1 if it were financially viable.
@@isotechimages.9130 Aloha Scott! Nice name! 🤣 Thanks for watching and for commenting. How do you like the R5 II? Are you also using it for wildlife? Do you find the more MP helpful? I think it would be for sure depending on the lens choice and wildlife encounter. Truth is no perfect camera/lens for every scenario, right. Hope the R5 II serves you well and you get many great images with it. Have a wonderful weekend, Scott. Aloha, Lee
@ well it certainly allows for cropping but it has some software issues l hoping they do a firmware fix for as it does not hold onto custom modes some buttons just keep returning to default heard somebody else say same so it will hopefully get fixed.
@ Yeah, new cameras have little gremlins that the first firmware tends to fix. I have a few issues that I hope to resolve by digging deeper into the menu, like keeping last exposure settings before sleep in custom modes. If I remember correctly I had the same problem with the R3 but found a fix in the menu. My first few sessions are always a lot of trial and error until I get it set up the way I like it. But hey, that’s part of the fun!
One of the prettiest mountains I’ve seen, Rishiri Fuji. It’s a spiritual place, a mountain of Kamui. Have you ever been somewhere in nature that felt spiritual? If so, let me know! Arigatou!
No Sonys please. Sensor dust. Having said that, I do like their RX100 line. On resolution - I upsized a 16MP Ricoh GRI photo years ago with ON1 and printed a perfect 30x20in. So perfect that it looks like it comes from an original with much higher resolution. On Toyota - Sebastiao Salgado shot with a 1DX in the Amazon jungle with great success well into the high ISOs (since he loved shooting f11 for a "natural human-eye look"). He also had praise for the hi-res 5DSRs (probably not at high ISOs) but with the caveat that they would not hold up in the tough jungle environments while the professional 1DX would.
Very cool. Salgado is a master. His images are so powerful. While nowhere near as accomplished (or good!) as Salgado, I used the 5DSR for many years. I tried to sell it back to B&H but they wouldn't take it because the shutter count was too high. The 1 DX series were tanks. Loved my 1 DX II, except I had a lot of issues with sensor dust or lubricant. Anyway, so far I am very happy with the R1. Hopefully I'll get a print worthy shot this weekend. Best of luck to you and thanks for watching and commenting! Aloha, Lee
I have a few of the RF big white lenses. The one I love the most is the 600mm f/4.
@@a3hindawi the 600 is a beast! I previously owned it. Used it for 4 years and it certainly made things possible that were not before. This time around I chose another big white and 1.4 ext. thanks again! Aloha, Lee
Thank you for the video. The R1 is a bit bigger (not smaller) than R3.
@@a3hindawi Thank you, Ahmed. Yes, I think I misspoke. I should have said the grip feels smaller. Thanks for watching and for your comment. Have a great weekend. Aloha, Lee
Good choice in memory box. R1 here as well. Holdover glass from ef’s. Don’t think I could resist a 4x2.8 with vari converter. Like your vid. Best Regards.
@@benstill6924 Mahalo Ben. I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching, too. The EF glass still shines, don’t it. I’m interested to see if Canon finally comes through with a vari converter! I’ll get one for sure if they bring it to market. Have a great weekend. Aloha, Lee
I hope the r6 mark3 and r7 mk 2 will have same auto focus
@@The_Idea_of_Dream_Vision aloha thanks for watching and for your comment! We can hope but I don’t think it will happen just yet. I read an interesting article on Canon Rumors that talks about the technology behind the auto focus and how it differs from the R5 II. It seems pretty advanced and stands out as the big difference in specs making the R1 a “flagship.” So it may be a few years yet before the same technology and required sensor make it down the line. But then again maybe Canon surprises me. Have a great weekend. Aloha, Lee
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai I think it's because R1 has cross type focus points. So the R5 might have what's in the R5 and maybe stacked sensor
@@The_Idea_of_Dream_Vision I think you’re right.i read that the R1 sensor allows for what you mention above “cross type” focus points. Anyway I used it today and it’s crazy good. Like a cheat code!
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai I can imagine. Been using the r6 and it's super good and those with r6 mark 2 say it's way better. If the R1 is way better I can imagine what it is like
I have an R6 MK II I love the camera. Wildlife it has to be a Canon !!!

@@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai U2, Thanks, one day I would like to get a R3 or R1 fit great in my hands.
For my needs the R3 and the R5 Mark II is the best combination (Wedding/Business and sometimes Sport) love the lenses and the autofocus 🥰
@ Aloha Kai. Thank you for watching and for your comment. It’s fantastic that you are able to use these for your business. I agree, the AF and lens lineup that Canon offers is quite nice and very appealing to pros and enthusiasts alike. The R5 II certainly looks like an amazing all rounder. Have a great weekend. The R1 will be my next purchase and entry in the mirrorless camera coming from a Canon 5D mark 4. I had the chance to try this camera last week and I feel home. There are a lot of excellent camera on the market but I like the ergonomic of Canon cameras. The lens I am leaning to with this new body is the RF 100-300 f/2.8.
@@schildcl Aloha Claude. Thanks for watching and for your comment. I think you will really like the R1 and Canon’s mirrorless ecosystem. Mirrorless is definitely the way to go I think. Having exposure simulation and a histogram in the viewfinder is wonderful. I think your first lens sounds excellent, too. I am also interested in that lens. The EF 300 f2.8 II is the only lens that I regret selling. It was just fantastic and from what I hear the RF 100-300 is just as good! Have a great weekend. Aloha, Lee

Mahalo M! I appreciate it! I hope to get out again this weekend. Another swell is rolling through. Be good! Aloha, Lee
@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai Awesome, I can't wait to see your next video!!! Marvin
I enjoyed your video! I'm a Sony shooter using the a7r5 and the a9. I love both cameras. I have been using the a7r5 for wildlife. Yes, it is slow, but the shots that get are truly amazing! For very fast action, I switch to the a9, and I love the images I get from it, too! The a9 is 24 megapixels, and the a7r5 is 60 megapixels! The a7r5 is 75% landscape and 25% wildlife! I love the photos from both!!!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
@@mspates5982 Aloha M! Thanks for watching and for your kind comments. The Sonys seem to be great cameras. Their sensors are everywhere, too. A testament to their IQ. I also like how they’ve made their telephotos smaller- like the new 300 and their 600 f4 is much smaller than Canons! I think ultimately having a high res for landscape and a fast camera with super fast AF for wildlife is the way to go. Thanks again for watching. Have a great week. Aloha, Lee

@@Jmac-1 thank you Jimmy! I’m happy to have a Canon in my bag again! Best of luck to you. Have a great week. Aloha, Lee
Congratulations on Camera . Beautiful gallery, how you compare color science and dynamic range SL 3 VS R 1 ?
Thank you! It’s too early to say as I have not used the R1 enough to make that comparison. However, the Dynamic Range of the SL3 is excellent. The best I have used to date. On the SL3 I use Highlight Weighted metering and then pull out the shadows with ease. And for wildlife that proved very useful when applying subject masks in LR. The colors of the SL3 are very good. I use Daylight White Balance to express the feeling of the changes in light. Whereas with the Canons I always use Auto White Balance. The Leica SL3 is a little too magenta, perhaps, for some scenes. I cannot speak to color of skin tones since I really do not photograph people. But in general the SL3 is a very fun camera to use for landscapes , seascapes, and night sky. I’m looking forward to seeing how the R1 compares.
Thanks for info , I have used many EOS 1 bodies . Is hard to match color to my leica Sl2s. For landscapes I use X2D- stunning image quality. Now just starting to test R1.
@ aloha Janusz. Thanks for watching and for your comment! Yes, I agree Leica is very nice and for seascape and landscape I couldn’t sell my Leica gear. The Hassy looks so good. If they had telephoto for wave photography I would try it, but the Leica 90-280 hits a sweet spot for me. I used the R1 yesterday and so far I am impressed. Need to keep shooting it to get to know it better. But so far so good.
Please update us with the lens and the AF. I have both canon and Nikon Z long glass . Would love to see what you think of the canon AF.
Thank you! Will do. I plan on taking it out real soon and look forward to sharing my experience. I can say with confidence that the Z8 is better than R5 I that I used to shoot. Cannot say yet about R1. Which Nikon glass? Do you have either the 4 or 6 with built in TC? If so how do you like it? I think for me with the 4 that would be very useful. Have a great week. Aloha, Lee
@ I have both 400TC and 600TC. I’m pretty happy with the results. Especially for wildlife and tracking animals. I’m not too happy with my R3 AF performance so that’s why I’m interested in knowing about the R1
@@MrTedTed sounds good. Man, that 400 + TC sure was tempting. If I knew anything about Nikons menu system I might have gone with the Z9… I hope to test the R1 Sunday with birds in flight against the ocean background, always a challenging scenario. Thanks again!
I hope to get the R1 one of the coming days. In terms of lens I do have a RF 100-500, but at low light its performance is sub-optimal. In case I would buy a new lens today, it would be between the RF 100-300 and the RF 400 f2.8. I do own a EF 500 f4 Type II, but am really curious about the rumoured RF 200-500. So I decided to wait with buying a new RF lens.
Aloha Andius. Thanks for watching and for your comment. I agree with you, the 100-500 is convenient but in low light it’s not the best. I once owned the 300 f/2.8 and loved it, but often found 300 and 420 to be too short for wildlife. Since you have the excellent 500 f4 it could make a great pairing for you! I am interested in the 100-300 because I could use it for waves and some larger animals that happen to be near or while on safari, but I still think it would be too short for a lot of North American wildlife in the National Parks where there are limited hides and we must keep our distance. So ultimately I went with another lens. Like you, I too was waiting for the rumored 200-500. But eventually gave up (for now) and went with something else for optimum image quality. Thanks again. Have a great week. Aloha, Lee
@@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai For reach the RF 800 f5.6 or the RF 600 f 4.0 look great. But having a EF 500 Type II it is just expensive for a bit of reach!
@@AndiusTeijgeler Haha. It all gets expensive!
@@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai Unfortunately!
I’ve got an R1 on loan from Canon UK at the moment. I currently shoot on an R3 and R5. I like the R1’s autofocus, but it certainly doesn’t feel as nice in the hand as my R3, so I’ll be sticking with with Ive got, which is more than capable for my event work.
Aloha and thanks for watching and for your comment! Interesting! The R3 may really turn out to be the hidden gem in Canon’s high end line up. Do you use the f2 28-70 in your event work? That was one of the first things I thought about when I felt the heat of the R1. I thought that the weight would be more even with that combo . Not sure why I did but that’s what I thought because of the surprise in weight difference to the R3. How about any pain or discomfort in your wrist while shooting the R1? I could see that as a potential problem for some…. Have a great week. Aloha, Lee
@@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai Hi there. Yes I shoot with the 28-70 f2. Find it balances well on the R3/1. My hands are probably medium size, and the R3 is much more comfortable to shoot with for many hours. The R1 feels strained for my hands!
@@snappyft that was my first impression of the R1. It felt a little better with a lens attached but…
It’s a great camera, but from a business perspective, upgrading to the R1 won’t make me any more money, and the R3 and R5 do everything I need them to do, so for now I’m sticking with what I have. Enjoy it though!
@ Return on investment is always something that we must consider, for sure. 👍
I subscribed, you do too, Colleague
@@nickdual mahalo!
i have an R5 and had an R3 I sold last week. Replaced it with the R1. The layout and focusing of the R3 made it my favorite camera. The R1 is a step up from that. People with R5 shooting short eared owls in flight were always saying they preferred the resolution of the R5, but at the end of the day I had many in focus shots that were amazing and they had a lot more out of focus flying birds. I shoot with the RF100-500 and the RF600 f4. I'd grab the R3 or R1 any day over the R5 for wildlife and action.
Aloha Mark. Good to hear that the R1 is working out for you. I agree, in focus , tack sharp images are what I am after too. I think often when resolution is discussed the lens or the focal length of the lens should be mentioned as well. Looks like you have it covered with the 100-500 and ESPECIALLY the 600 f4. Incidentally that was the last piece of Canon gear that I sold. I loved it but it’s a little too long for what and where I want to shoot. I’m not much of a birder but I go crazy for owls! So good to hear that you had a good encounter with some shorties recently. Best of luck and thanks for watching and for your comment. Mahalo! Aloha, Lee
Hello , how you compare low light high iso quality to R3 ? Just got R1 and looks to me R3 was better at high iso. I hope I’m wrong.
@ too early to tell but after first session I’d say they are very close but I just have to use the R1 more and print a few 12”x18” to really tell. Interesting to hear your thoughts. What ISO speeds are you comparing! 6400? Higher? Thanks, Lee
Nice choice and congratulations, I use the R3 with the RF 400mm 2.8 never felt the need to add the R5 mk ii the results for me are fantastic and 24mp give me all the detail I would ever need, not to mention the low light benefit 😎
Thank you! And thanks for watching and for your comment. The R3 feels so good in the hand doesn’t it! The R1 feels a bit smaller than the R3 along the edge. It also feels “grippy” not quite sticky but like it has anti slip material or something. That’s pretty cool. When I had the R3 I would start every morning with the 600 on it while on safari. For the lowlight capabilities and the speed of AF. It’s still a great camera. I may try to find a used or refurbished for a backup. 400 2.8… the best lens Canon makes? I’m sure you love it! I’m guessing you also have the 1.4 ext? Can you see a difference- a loss in IQ- when using it? Have a great week. Aloha, Lee
I agree with you. The R3 is the nicest feeling camera body I have used across brands. Rented the all the popular bodies from the Z9, Z8 and I personally own an A1 but the R3 just feels so good in the hand. I wish they simply changed the innards of the R1 and kept the R3’s form factor. BTW, your wildlife photos are stunning. My favorite shots are the ones you incorporate the surroundings foliage to frame your subjects particularly the Leopard shot. It sets your work apart from the tons of wildlife photos I have seen online.
Aloha. Thank you for watching and for your kind comment. I am in 100% agreement with you-- Change the inside and keep the R3 body and feel. It's just about perfect in the hand. The leopard shot is one of my top 3 favorite images. I like cats, so that's another reason why it holds a special place in my memory. I took it in Ruaha National Park in southern Tanzania. If you like safaris that are more out of the way than the usual spots, I highly recommend it. I had good luck with leopards and wild dogs there. How do you like the A1? In your mind how does the newly announced A1 II match up? The Sony 300 f2/8 lens looks fantastic, too. Thanks again and wish you all the best. Aloha, Lee
@@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai The A1II is a solid update, adding features I’ve always wished my A1 had, like pre-capture and an improved EVF. It’s definitely tempting. However, I also own the R3, and while the A1 is undeniably more versatile, I find myself enjoying the R3 more because of its superior ergonomics. The A1 feels a bit cramped by comparison. Despite the R3’s 24MP sensor, I’ve never had any issues even with moderate cropping-it still delivers excellent results. It seems we share similar experiences with these cameras. My first digital camera was a Canon 1D Mark III, which I inherited from my dad. It only had 10MP, but I was still able to produce large, high-quality prints and post sharp, clear images on social media. That’s why I agree that 24MP is often more than enough-people today just seem to be drawn to the big megapixel numbers modern cameras boast. That said, I’m keeping a close eye on the R1 and following reviews from experienced photographers like you to gain more insight. I’m a sports and event photographer, I think the pre-capture feature and better AF could be a super useful for helping me nail those peak moments my clients value most. I could opt for the R5II instead, but I prefer the more manageable file sizes of the R1. I have probably photographed over a thousand events, and I can confidently say that none of my clients have ever requested ultra-high-resolution files. For them, megapixels don’t matter-they just want photos that are clear enough for display on their mobile devices and look great in their album prints.
@ 💯 keeping clients happy that’s the name of the game.
Thanks for your review. I had exactly the same experience you describe. The main point as you said is, if you nail it, it's outstanding, but you need to achieve that and some times its very difficult and frustrating. Now I know the problem its real and its not only my lack of experience using this camera.
The struggle is real! I am actually so glad that I did the "Dear Diary" confessional into the camera so I could remember my immediate feelings after/while using the SL3 for wildlife because the images can seduce you in the end. Like you said above, some of the images are simply outstanding. But the feeling is that of fighting the camera constantly. So yeah, your thoughts are not only valid, but they are true to my experience as well. Thanks for watching and for your comment. Have a great week. Aloha, Lee
Congrats on your new camera. 👍
Mahalo! I am stoked!
I‘m guessing 100-300mm f/2.8!
Aloha Michael! That’s a good guess!!! But I have a 90-280 for the Leicas so there is too much overlap. But I did shoot waves with the Leica to be sure that I would be happy with that set up for wave photography. For now it’s good so I chose something else. But it’s still in my mind for sure. I will say that the only lens that I regret selling is the EF 300 2.8…. Have you used the RF 100-300? I’ve heard so many good things about it! Have a great week. Aloha, Lee
@ Moin! The 100-300 is certainly way out of my price range. But since the wild animals I shoot are my kids my ancient EF 70-200mm f/2.8 works sufficiently. One can dream, though. Regards from Germany
@@michaelsteingraber9866 the EF 70-200 is a legend of a lens! I'm sure you get some nice "wild" kids images with that lens. Beautiful landscapes, too, with that lens for sure. Do they play sports? Soccer? or Skiing perhaps? I once asked a German guy who skies if he ever went to Wyoming or Utah for skiing. He looked at me like I was crazy and said, Why would i do that? We have the Alps! Have a great week. Aloha, Lee
@ No skiing for this family. An so far no sports pictures, just casual portraits. Have a great week, Michael
I sold my Canon R3 9 weeks ago and was considering buying the R1, but the heavy weight of the Rf 100-500 with the 1.4 extender with the R1, and the fact that I still have the feeling that I If I am short on MMs, I am considering buying the Om-1 mk II with the 150-400. I then have a range of up to 1000 mm, which is more than sufficient. What also matters is that I don't know when the RF 200-500 will be released and what it will cost and what weight it weighs.
Exactly! I was surprised (and a little disappointed) that the R1 weighs more than the R3. It’s probably only a 100 grams or so but the feeling is substantial in the hand (without lens attached). And yes again, the 200-500 is the big mystery. I too was hoping to hear something soon but have given up on it for now because I’m going to Tanzania in February and want to get some practice in before the trip. Maybe once my bank account recovers I’ll be able to get the 200-500 whenever (if!) it is released. The OM system seems like a great way to go , especially when considering form factor, size, reach and portability. I am always shocked that such a small package delivers such quality and reach! Thanks for commenting. Have a great week. Aloha, Lee
Hi Lee thanks for your response and have a great time in Tanzania.
Thanks for the video. On 24mp usually for wildlife the argument to go higher like the R5mII is cropping. Animals move erratic and it is very difficult to properly frame an action shot. Many prefer shooting a bit wider to have higher likelyhood to have what they need and later crop out the excess. That often leaves you with something like 24mp. But the ability to crop is what many look for. However if you can frame your shot perfectly, especially with static subjects, then 24mp is certainly enough. I just bring the argument I have seen many times. All depends on how and what you shoot.
@@MrMartin246 aloha Martin. Thank you for watching and for your thoughtful and well considered comment. Yes, I agree that more megapixels are often desired for just the scenario you outline above: cropping. Sometimes it is necessary for sure, but it’s rare that after cropping the image file cannot be printed to a pleasing size. For example , the short eared owl in flight at the end of the video. This image is cropped significantly from the 24 MP R3, and I print it in two sizes regularly- 8x12 and 12x18. The subject matter fits those sizes well and may not be suitable for a giant print. I think it comes down to practicality as well as in practice: ie, photographing while in the field. Before I sold all my Canon gear I shot with the 600 f4 and while I loved that lens for what it made possible I want to include more animals in landscape and environmental scenes into my wildlife portfolio. This is another reason why I think (hope) I will be happy with the R1. Of course if I am being totally honest I would have liked the R1 to have 30 MP or so if for nothing more than psychological reasons. Thanks again for your comment. By the way, how do you like the R5 II? Are you finding that it suits your needs? It certainly looks like a great camera! Have a great week. Aloha, Lee
This may sound like a stop gap for some but modern upscaling software like Topaz Gigapixel and Lightroom’s super resolution does a decent job increasing resolution if you really need to crop. I know a wild life pro that still use old pro bodies like the 20mp 1Dx iii and uses Topaz with no issues with his cropped photos. He has been shooting wildlife for 17 years and has a ton of raws on his NAS. He prefers using low mpx cameras because the files are smaller and less costly to store and only up res his files if needed.
@@ryanvacation7319 Interesting. I know Topaz Denoise is outstanding.

Did you check in the pelican case at the airport??? Thanks Rick
Aloha Rick. Thanks for watching and for your question. I was able to carry on the Pelican case the entire way. And in the bush planes in the Serengeti I carried it on and put it in the back of the little plane. You’ll have a great time in safari! Aloha, Lee

I booked my rental car online via a travel site and picked it up at Budget at Shin Chitose Airport. I did not hire a guide so cannot recommend one , but I’m sure you can find a guide online. Thank you for your review. I own the SL3 and the 60-600 and, generally speaking, i agree with your findings. One can only hope that Panasonic will help out Leica in the AF department and future firmwares will improve the experience. It is still beta after all. I'm happy with the setup though because when you DO nail it, it just blows your socks off. :-) Would you share your custom profiles by any chance?
Thank you for watching and for your comment. Yes, I agree with you. When you do nail it the results are fantastic. Mind blowing, even. And those hits alone make a compelling argument for the the Leica SL3 and various telephoto combinations. Likewise, the Animal Tracking is in Beta version so hopefully it improves over time. Also, I think it reasonable to expect that as the colaboration between Leica and Sigma matures over time, the features of lens and camera will work better together. As for my custom profiles-- you've given me a good idea for a future video! I'll work on that and share it on the channel. Thanks! Have a wonderful weekend. Aloha, Lee

Pretty useless review
Hey Frosty. The video is more my initial impressions on the Sigma and not a review. I don’t think it would be fair to review a lens that I had only used a few times on a rental basis. I’m currently in Alaska shooting wildlife with my own copy of the lens. I might make a review video after an extensive 6 week use in the field when I return. Thanks for commenting. Have a great day. @@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai It felt like more of an 'the sl camera sucks', which I completely agree with however having the 500 5.6 on an A1, I've got some pretty decent images in the past 2 days, it's faster at focusing and sharper than my 200-600
Exactly. What I am having difficulty with is knowing how much good and bad is the lens or the camera. Ultimately it might be best to consider them as a combo- sigma lens plus Leica SL3. Because that’s how I’m using it. Good to hear that you are getting excellent results.
Hey Lee. I'm enjoying your videos! If you had to choose between a Canon mirrorless camera with more megapixels or a full frame sensor what is better for photography in general? I'll be heading to Tanzania next month. I just bought the Canon rf800 lens and looking for a Canon camera around the model price of an RP, 7, 8. Thank you!
Aloha Nick. Thank you for watching and for your comment. You will have a wonderful time in Tanzania! 🇹🇿 The 800 is a beast! I would actually consider pairing the R5 with it. Perhaps the R5 mark 1 . You should be able to find one on sale or a refurbished one directly from Canon at a good price. Since you will be using an 800 no need for the crop sensor of R7. If not the R5 mark 1 then the R6 II would make a nice choice, too. IMHO. Have fun and best of luck! Aloha, Lee
@@LeeScott-LightSourceKauaiThanks for the response Lee. Just to clarify, I'm referring to the Canon RF 800 F11 IS STM lens $1000 model.
@@NicholasLyman well that’s less of a beast but still capable. And the fact that you purchased it tells me that you are interested in improving your photography and are hoping to get some nice images while on safari. I think you could get a great deal on a new R5 and “grow into it.” You also may want to consider a companion lens to go with the 800 as it will be too long in some scenarios. Have a great trip!!
Thanks for a great video! I have mine on order for Sony just now. Wondering how effective you found the stabilization? (In comparison to your Canons).
Aloha. Thanks for watching and for your comment. I think the lens is excellent and found the Image Stabilization to be outstanding. However, the Canons are slightly better. I think that has more to do with Canon’s in body stabilization being slightly better than Leica’s. I just returned from Katmai National Park and was very pleased with how the Sigma performed. I’d be interested to know your thoughts on this lens once you’ve had a chance to use it. Best of luck! Aloha, Lee

Mahalo, Roger! Ruaha was epic!!! Hot, but awesome!
Hi Lee. Thanks for the video. I will do safari in August 2025 and will do the Masai Mara migration, the crater, and some other sights. I plan to bring two R5s, a 600 F4, and the 100-500. I would like you to not bring a computer as mine weighs 5lbs. i want to bring my 12.9-inch iPad and use that to transfer images at the end of the day. Does your ipad fit in that Pelican case with all of those lenses? I have a 1510 that I bought long ago and I have never got on with it. Is your 600 just too long to fit? If I could get both lenses and two gripped bodies in one, that would be nice. Thanks.
Aloha Roger. Thanks for watching and for commenting. You will love being on safari! Hopefully you will be able to see the river crossings of the great migration! Regarding the 600 f/4-- unfortunately it does not fit in the Pelican case. I transport the 600 in the Canon soft case that came with the lens. So it is a little cumbersome, but I have not had any trouble carrying the two as carry ons (no trouble yet. Knock on Wood...). And for the iPad, I squish it on top of the lenses and cameras. It is all a pretty tight fit, but it works. Since the 600 doesn't fit into the Pelican case anyway, you might consider a camera bag that holds the two gripped bodies, the 100-500 and iPad. Not quite as easy as a roller carrying case like the Pelican, but it is an option to consider. Have a great weekend. Aloha, Lee
Very nice, Lee. This is my third video on yours. Exactly what I need at this moment. I would die (ok, too much) for those kinds of images. As I said in the other video, i'm going there in August 2025.
Mahalo Anthony! I replied to your earlier comment so be sure to take a look! Wishing you a fantastic safari in August!
Hi Lee! You're my new best friend after only watching two of your videos! In just about a year from now, I will be on Safari in Arusha, Ngorongoro, and Eastern and northern Serengeti and will do the Mara river crossing. I'm so looking forward to this trip, as it will be both my first and likely only Safari and chance to visit Africa. I was excited to see your gear options as a lot of similar to mine. First, I will take my R5+R5m2, then my RF600F4, and my RF 100-500 as my zoom (I will be doing video as well). Also, I have the EF 400 mm F4 DO Mk2. I have wondered a bit about whether to go with a 400F4 vs the 600F4. I have heard a lot of people say 400 mm is about all you need, but I worry about being in a safari vehicle and being close to animals, and having to shoot down at them. So I think with the 600F4 I could try to get the farther out, thus giving me an more eye-lever type of shot. Certainly the 400 F4 is better than the slow 100-500 in the sunset hours. Of course, the 400mmF4 is not a lot different in size than your 300mm F2.8, so that means I could fit them both in a Pelican case. But I find those cases rather heavy. Do you take both the loaded Pelican and the RF600F4 on the plane with you? To further complicate matters, I also have a RF 200-800 F9 lens. Frankly, I'm thinking of leaving this home for this trip as I can get to 840 with the RF600+1.4x which I will be bring too. I think the 100mm of the 100-500 would come in useful for landscapes and things closer to the vehicles and possibly elephants and other large animals. Oh, I really enjoyed those cranes you showed in the other video in the crater. And the flamingos. I'm mostly a bird photographer anyway, so those get me very excited. As for a smaller camera, I was thinking of bringing my R7 with the RF16mm or RF 28 mm lens attached. And my iPhone 15 Pro Max, which I don't really know how to use well for photos. I do have the RF 70-200 F4, and while it is tiny, I think I want to leave it home. I'd like to take only three lenses: RF600F4, RF100-500, and RF 16mm (or RF 28 mm). Then 3 bodies: R5m2, R5m1, and R7. I'd rather just take two bodies but I want to minimize changing lenses out there. I want to get my gear in something like a Gura Gear Kiboko 30L+ (so I can bring a laptop) and a Gura Gear Chobe 16 in (perhaps). The bags are still up in the air (I worry about putting a laptop in the Kiboko because it will already have two bodies and two lenses inside, but on the trips I could load it out differently). I think I can get both R5s, the 100-500, and the RF600 in that Kiboko 30L, and then my 16 in laptop and R7+16mm in the 16- Chobe bag along with some extra cloths and accessories. I would appreciate any and all thoughts you have. I know this is a lot and I was rambling a bit, but I have another trip in April 2025 so I'm trying to cover both with my bag choice. I will be looking forward to your follow up videos after you trip in early 2025. Thanks and take care.
Aloha Anthony! Thank you for watching the video and for commenting. First off, I am so happy that you will be able to experience a Tanzania safari. You will absolutely love it. The photography is amazing, but so too the pure joy of the travel experience. So be sure to put the camera down every once in a while and just take it all in with a smile. Your gear sounds great. Lots of high quality options. I am guessing that you will be on a private safari or a photo safari with other photographers? If that’s the case then your gear list sounds great. However, If you are sharing the vehicle with 5 other participants then you may not have room for all of it. But I will assume you are on a private safari and will discuss your gear plans with this assumption in mind. As a bird guy, you must take the 600. The birds will blow you away! There are so many and so beautiful!!! So the 600 goes. And I’d put it on the R5 II. That way you can come tell me how great the combo is when you get back. If you are with other safari participants, just randos and not friends or family, then the 600 gets in the way. But for birds essential. Also excellent for the smaller mammals like mongoose, serval (eastern Serengeti), porcupines, honey badgers , and even for the big cats, too. For general (I feel bad using that term because all wildlife is special!) wildlife while on safari I think the 400 may be the best prime focal length. Too short for birds, but for all the other wildlife and the variety of distance and encounters that you will have the 400 will be very useful. But you already have that distance covered in the 100-500. So is it necessary??? Maybe not. Great lens and Canon needs to make an RF version but the real thing to consider is just how busy do you want to be out there thinking about which lens to use? I recall after my first day of my first safari I told my wife, “I felt so busy!” I think it is better to feel relaxed. So if you do bring the 400 I would not bring it on every game drive. But rather pick and choose. One morning take the 100-500. One afternoon take the 400 and vice versa. For me, on my private safaris I gravitated to the 300 and 600 for image quality. The 100-500 just doesn’t hold up to the primes in my opinion. But very good for video like you say above. To Be Continued…. 🤙
Leave the 200-800 at home. You have it covered with the three lenses mentioned above. Yes, I take the loaded Pelican and the 600 in its carry case on the plane. This was never a problem until I flew out of Seronera in Central Serengeti. They wanted to charge me more for the extra gear but I pleaded with the baggage handler to let me by and he eventually acquiesced. I was very grateful and gave him a nice tip so if you take everything you are thinking of be sure to have a tip ready if you feel that you received special or excellent service! And continuing with gear- I do not take a camera bag on safari. I just put the Pelican case in the safari vehicle. I find this protects the gear and keeps everything well organized so I can grab stuff when I need it. The 600 goes naked and gets a seat belt. 😀 In daily carry I use Fstop camera backpacks. That’s all I’ve used for forever so that’s really all I know. I have used Lowepro in the past and see Mindshift bags every now and again. For your small lens- I think 16 may be too wide. I’d go with the 28 or even a 35 if you have one. Is the 16 you reference a 16-35? If so then that’ll work. The 28, is it a prime or zoom? And I’m glad you don’t know how to use the iPhone for photography!!! You are a good man! 🤣 Have fun and best of luck! You will absolutely love it!!!! Aloha, Lee
@@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai Yes, this will be a private tour with two other photographers in the vehicle and each of us having a row to ourselves. I definitely don’t want to feel too busy out there, but that zoom is so versatile, light, and small. Taking the 600 and 1-5 would make the trip much more relaxing, especially during travel. I will think on it more. Thanks.
@@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai Both the 16 and 28 are prime f2.8 RF lenses made by Canon. These would be on the r7, a 1.6 crop-sensor body. So more like 26 and 45 mm, I think. I do have the rf 35f1.8 and the rf 24-105 f4L that I could take. The r7 has a 32MP sensor so I have room to crop to 20 MP and be fine. And I do have an EF 16-35 F4L too, so I have many options. I was actually trying to keep my load small by going with a 16 or 28 or 35 mm on the r7. Then I could leave the larger 16-35 or 24-105 at home. I also have even smaller RF-s lenses like a 10-18 and a 18-135 mm. These are those non L kit type lenses. I will find a not so wide option among all these choices and then figure the weight of it all. I do remember we have one flight during the trip and there might be weight restrictions there to consider. I will need to contact the trip leader to get the details. So this was valuable to be to consider these issues to get worked out. I really want to get some decent landscape shots if i can. Thanks, Lee!!
@@RogerZoul I think the 600 and 100-500 make perfect sense. The 200-800 is not necessary, in my humble opinion.
I believe using f/4 would have resulted in sharper images of the leopard. Thanks for the photos.
Aloha. Thanks for watching and for your comment. I think the images I presented in the video are all sharp. But I do acknowledge shooting at f/2.8 can be a high risk high return proposition. If I miss the eye, then I miss the photo. Stopping down to say f/4, as you suggest, does open up the depth of field, and more of the animal may be “sharper”, but that’s not how I like to photograph wildlife. I really like a blurred background so I photograph wide open when I can. Thanks again and have a great weekend. Aloha, Lee

The Leica SL3 with the Sony 61 megapixels sensor is too expensive for what you NOT get ! Get a Sony A7RV !
Haha. Yes, I agree. It is overpriced. I made the decision to purchase it primarily as a landscape lens that I could also do wildlife in combination with the Sigma 500 f/5.6. I just got tired of going in wildlife trips and coming back with thousands of photos. So I wanted something slower. And boy is it slower! 🤣 for BIF it’s basically useless. But for larger animals it’s fine. IQ is excellent. And for landscape I like the APO lenses. In hindsight I probably should’ve kept half my Canon gear and bought a Hasselblad X2D but I need telephoto for waves and compressed landscapes. And weather sealing so I went with Leica. I’ve told myself I have to use it for at least 4 years to get my money’s worth. Then may sell. Who knows? But yeah, totally overpriced. Agree with you there.
@@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai Despite it is a Sony sensor in the SL3, the Sony A7RV have slightly better dynamic range. I use Zeiss, Voigtländer and Sony GM Lenses, none of those are second to Leica, but all cheaper. so I have two Sony 61 megapixels Cameras and 11 high end Lenses ! Right now the Fuji GFX100S is much better buy than X2D. I thought of getting either X2D or Fuji, but I will rather go with a bit less image quality and still have a compact and light weight system with Sony. Last week I tried a software that enhanced some of my 15 years old digital photos, just amazing how good those images got in post !
@@cameraprepper7938 very cool. I used a Zeiss 21 Milvus with my Canon and while I do think it is very good, the Leica 21 APO is superior in my opinion. The Milvus had some distortion and bowing along the horizon. But the colors were excellent. I am happy that you are pleased with your kit. I’ll continue to get to know the SL3. It is amazing at just how many excellent choices we have available to us as photographers now. Best of luck. Lee
@@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai The Zeiss Milvus Lenses may be good, but they are just too big and heavy. I have the very compact Zeiss Loxia Distagon 21mm 2.8 T* which are excellent, I got it new in open box offer for half price. For me the Sony eco system are great, so many very good Cameras and hundreds of Lenses for the Sony E-mount system, with that you cannot go wrong AND you will be richer than going the Leica way !
@@cameraprepper7938 sounds good! 👍
I use a phone app to release the shutter and to operate shutter time, ISO and more, I can also see the live image on the phone.
I’ve seen apps that work like that. I think Leica has one as well. I can see such an app can be useful. And cheaper than buying the ridiculously expensive remote shutter release!
@@LeeScott-LightSourceKauai You can buy good "no brand name" remote controls, but it is so much easier to use an app on the phone. I can stand more than 30 feet from the Camera and control the Camera with the phone and see the live image on the phone, great !
@@cameraprepper7938 I will have to investigate the app. It sounds convenient!
When I got the Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN OS Sports Lens in March 2024, I was very astonished about the small compact size and the low weight ! It is very easy to handle an operate and it fits nice in a small backpack, though I can go hiking for hours, just holding the Lens in my hands ! The optical image quality are excellent, I can highly recommend the Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN OS Sports Lens !
Totally agree! Thanks for watching and for your informative comment. It’s always good to hear from other photographers who have had direct hands on experience. Have a great weekend. Aloha, Lee
