A Day in Andy Griffith's Mayberry (Mount Airy)

The Andy Griffith Show is a classic TV show that showcases idyllic Mayberry. You can visit the real Mayberry at Mount Airy, North Carolina. We stayed at the Mt. Airy Hampton Inn, ate at The Loaded Goat restaurant and Snappy's Lunch. The ride in Barney's Squad Car was a family favorite with the wonderful guide, Roger. We loved seeing all the memorabilia from the show at the Andy Griffith Museum and walking down Main Street where you can purchase souvenirs, see Floyd's Barber Shop, and imagine a simpler time where Barney, Thelma Lou, Opie, or Miss Crump might turn the corner any minute!
It takes about half a day to visit all the sites in Mount Airy so it's a great addition to a family road trip to North Carolina or southern Virginia. Our family vacation was Mt. Airy--then Appomattox---then St. Johns Church and White House of the Confederacy in Richmond--then presidential houses Monticello and Montpelier---then staying on Walton's Mountain.
